There was a story with that air-cooled engines of Tatras. When the first trucks came to the USSR most of them got overheated during driving. Therefore Tatra had complains about poor cooling system. Tatra sent an employee to the USSR and he turned the engine ON, then revved it to max rpms and no overheating occurs. In the end of the story it turns that traditional old-scool drivers never raised engine rpms trying to keep it minimal even on high loads. Because old engines had to work like that. But air-cooled Tatra engines needed high revs to get better cooling.
Not just Tatra engines, all fuel-powered engines are cooled by the fuel. I doubt the Tatra had more torque on higher revs, it just needed diesel to cool it.
air cooled diesels are my favourite. I love how you talk about literally anything that has wheels and consumes fuel. It doesn't have to be the latest most well know petrol car
I have a Yanmar 2S engine from 1967 in my boat. Still runs great. It’s a 6 liter 2 cylinder naturally aspirated air cooled engine. I have it posted on 1 of my 2 channels in a video. Really sounds like an old very slow running tractor. It produces 20 HP. But the torque is 490 NM
My family has a Deutz tractor here in Missouri USA. Diesel 4 cylinder (i think) never seen another one. That tractor has been around my whole life and is still going strong.
The Deutz engine is an agricultural engine used in Deutz-Fahr DX 85 and DX 90. I think it was succeeded by the 6.1 litre Turbo intercooler used in Deutz-Fahr 97-07 MK1-3 and newer Agrotrons for 110-150HP and bigger Agrotrons at the time used 7.1 litre engines upto 260hp and 7.8L for 9340 340hp in 2015, Deutz-Fahr made a 9.6 litre used in some Fendts. All of these are still in use…
Finally after about 20 years I found out what the civilian / resistance truck used in Operation flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, is called in real life....the "Praga V3S"! ....thank you for solving a 20 year old mystery for me
Lots of Tatra trucks are used in Western Australia by mining exploration companies looking for new mine sites. Off road capacity is enviable. Western Australia is one huge mining state. One mine, Sunrise Dam, 4 hours drive north of Kalgoorlie WA, produces 1,000kg of gold per month!

Cool video buddy, reminds me of some of the engines I manged to see and work with. A couple of odd ones was a Lister V8 air cooled diesel used for a water pump and the the was a Dueitz 60 hp 4 cylinder air cooled diesel. That one was unique buy using the oil as coolent so it didn't have the fins like the other's rather a large radiator.
Thank you for keeping this naive American humbled by the vehicular awesomeness from around the world. I am off to see if there are some Tatra’s in the US that are affordable...
I am a big fan of aircooled engines, no water, no radiator, no water pump, no water hoses, so simple! Lot of weight eliminated. I lament the passing of air cooled engines. Choice of whether head gaskets are used, beetle motor- no head gasket needed. Air cooled engines such as type 1 and type 4 VW engines -so simple to work on. All these wasser cooler engines have components with limited life spans. Air coolers keep on keeping on until engine wears out. I miss my Porsche 911 air cooler. Bought it when my 911 was 18 years old, owned it five years, and drove 130,000km put on the speedo. Only expense was replace fuel pump and got technician to dismantle starter solenoid to clean and fix starting problem when it was warm. Total non normal service expense in 5 years - $300. So glad it was not watercooled. at those mileages, cooling system was bound to start exhibiting problems and costs.
Those Deutz engines can have from one to 16 cylinders i think, i have worked on inline 2 and V6 Deutz engines, very reliable, can run for a long time without major maintenance.
I went into the video hoping a Eicher Engine like the would be included. But I don't think they are very popular outside Germany, are they? Eicher EDK 6 is a really nice sounding Air cooled diesel engine with separate blowers for each cylinder.
The latest diesel versions of the AV1790 are up to 1500hp. However, back in the 50’s, the top dog was a supercharged gasoline version that put out 980hp...I shudder to think how much fuel a 29 litre carb’ed and blown V12 would use 😅
You should REALLY take a closer look at the "Dolmette" motorbike which is powered by 24 (!) chainsaw engines. Created in Germany, based on the idea of a cartoonist they built some of the fictional cars and motorbikes in real
If I may suggest some really old oil engines. There are engines that are zero rpms. Some sound really strange. Mainly on the really old tractors but also used in milling.
