Engines like these are amongst my favorite to shoot a video about. Especially that KrAZ is something really really cool and that Tatra - I have a soft spot for Tatra since it is almost like a home manufacturer. Which one do you love the most? Don't forget to follow my IG and FB @visioracer

YaMZ isn't an unusual engine. I have the V6 236 n/a variant in my truck. It weighs a bit over 800kg by itself. Originally, 238 and 236 engines were designed for big Kirov tractors, but were quickly adapted for automotive use. The n/a variants are used in the army and prized for their high torque and good durability. The turbo variants have much higher horsepower and are found in MAZ trucks and some Kirov tractors.

One thing that most people don't know about steam engines is they develop all the torque at basically zero rpm (much like an electric motor does).
This is ideal for a heavily loaded vehicle such as a truck, or a freight train for that matter.
    Glad you included #2!

KrAZ-255 was and still is one of most legendary Soviet trucks of all time. Very favorable in our military during Soviet times, but more so in logging today. For its class, its weight capacity, fording ability and powerful engine (plus Soviet construction) makes them hard to kill. They just keep going.

These days, I drive a MAZ 5440A5 with Euro 3 variant of the KrAZ engine, the YaMZ 658. For a Yaroslavl V8, it is very economical, producing better fuel economy than many equivalent European engines of the '90s. Reliability is also good, provided, as with everything, you keep up with proper servicing. The engine previously used in this model of truck was the YaMZ 7511, a Euro 2 engine with fully mechanical high pressure fuel pump. Those engines are less fuel efficient, but far simpler in construction, and come with either single piece engine heads (considered stronger) or individual cylinder heads (considered much easier to maintain). All variants are still widely in use today.

Those Tatras though are something else. I never get bored of watching those trials on UA-cam, with the giant 6 and 8 wheeled trucks, wading through deep water, then charging up these ridiculously slippery and muddy slopes, that a Land Rover would struggle with. The ldt-465 "multifuel" engine used in the M35a2 "deuce and a half" and M54 series 5 tons produced by Hercules, White, Continental and others is pretty cool and I'm lucky enough to own two. They are capable of running on various combustible liquids including WMO(waste motor oil) fryer oil, bio-diesel, gasoline(petrol), kerosene, heating oil, and certain aviation fuel with the exception of aviation gasoline and "JP-8" jet fuel both of which can still be used when diluted with clean motor oil. The injectors are designed to spray a stream of fuel instead of a mist and the higher compression ratio of 22:1-24:1 allows for the combustion of the heavier fuel. The Injection pump includes a "FDC" or Fuel Density Compensator(most mechanical diesel injection pumps have one) but the engine will still run reliably with it bypassed which is commonly done when it leaks. Feel free to reach out if you would like to know more, I work on these all the time, and as I mentioned before I own two.

This looked very good, special engines and large trucks ++. Here is just one thing to do, subscribe. Too bad we didn't get to see the engines on the first trucks, but you can't demand everything. Good video.

Friend of mine got an Ural from the east german NVA surplus. From those were a lot versions around. Some ran on diesel and some on gasoline. He got a diesel one for his project, but wanted another one for parts. That one was a gasoline. We got the truck for beer and paid a fortune for the gas to get it home. The motor was taken out and sold to some folks which were into tractor pulling. They plugged some compressors and superchargers onto the thing. It was a audience favorite with the blue flames shooting out of the exhaust pipes up high into the air.

I grew up hearing the Rootes 3 cylinder screeming across the Loddon Valley as drivers pushed to overcome the first hills. On a frosty night they were 2 Km away, but sounded like just passing outside the house.
