In this video I begin making a panelled design coffee table with a hidden secret drawer using beech and birch for my mum and dad as a gift. I needed to match some existing furniture in their living room for this project, and the finishing will be covered in part 2 of the video.

Nice build again Keith
i appreciate your honestly when things go wrong. Helps the rest of us to think forward and not feel as bad when we screw up :)
Nice job so far mate well done 👏
Looks classy. I can't help bit think all those square off cuts from the legs and skirts would make a nice end grain butcher's block :)
Good job...
Great job, and nice to see I’m not the only one to stuff up measurements of drawers - I ended up routing a few mm into my drawer sides to “make it fit”. Thankfully only for a workshop unit no one will see...
It seems to happen more often than not, and I find they’re always too tight rather than too loose - I think next time I’ll allow for another mm!
Drawer slides always need a little wiggle room on tolerances, otherwise they "bind" when first engaging the slide segments & recoil springs when mounted. Push past the bind and they function ok
Do a workshop tour and do a in depth vid of all ur hand tools power tools and cordless tools pls
Please do that
Because that doesn't sound suspicious at all, considering he's got tool review video's and workshop tours
It's true I have reviewed most of my tools already in videos, you'll just need to find them. Workshop tour will happen as soon as it's finished. Not quite there yet
@@christophergraham1857 wat do u mean by suspicious
I've not tackled drawers... yet! Nice to see how you measured up for them!
I rarely get it right first time, they are nearly always too tight - next time I will add another mm clearance! 👍
"A hidden drawer for my mum and dad" seems unkind to keep them in there!!
I was going to say something like that!
@@taybankvideo me too....
Isn't that taking shielding a little far ?
I was going to say I thought he might have got his measurements wrong. Unless he was going to do something illegal...
Same
Great Jobe Keith! Looking forward to the second part.
It is amazing
Nice start.
I like to see your videos always
Looking good so far. Looking forward to next video 👍
Nice job Keith
Looking great so far mate and I like the idea a lot
Workshop tour soon
Looking good so far, I bought those exact drawer runners my self, I've got a fair bit of weight on them and they work perfectly
Yeah they are pretty good! Cheers James
Lovely work again Keith. I think Beech is currently my favourite wood to work with as I managed to get a load of it from a reclamation yard a few months back. Looking forward to seeing what it’s like with a finish on it😀
Thanks Leo, yeah it's lovely stuff, especially when it's really pale almost white. The stuff I have is so old that it has aged and had more of a pinky colour to it 👍
Great video Keith, Nice to see the DW745 making an appearance. Because I have failed so often with runners I tend to use hard wood runners... Must give them a chance again 👍
I think I have one more video recorded on the dw745 after this project and that'll be the last of it. Cheers Paul
What's going on with your hands? Take care of them, my friend!
I love how this project is coming together!
I hit my knuckle on the door frame while carrying some wood
One of my regular runs at work is delivering wood for a couple of local timber suppliers. You'd be amazed how many people turn down the cover boards. It's often very nice stuff too. Anything with a bit of damage to it gets used as covers as it can't be sold full price.
It also amazes me that most people don't take the bearers either (not that I'm complaining, they come home with me for the fire) which are usually something like poplar. They're not perfect wood, but there's plenty of useable material to be had from them
Wow, I was so excited to be offered it! 😂
@@RagnBoneBrown
Always ask for the cover boards and bearers. It saves me having to find somewhere to get rid of them 👍
Great stuff as always, Keith!!! I think that the discrepancy with the drawer width is because the runners were probably an inch thick combined... So there's your half a mil difference from 13+13 I guess!
Ah interesting. That would make sense. I'll add another mm clearance next time
@@RagnBoneBrown funnily, although the slides are indeed supposed to be an inch combined, I was being daft, as you added more clearance than an inch... So my diagnosis was wrong! 😣
👍🏻
Keith, I get the biggest kick out of you sometimes, particularly when you discover that you discovered you have made a mistake. I find your videos not only educational, but entertaining. Barb, USA
Thank you!
Hi Keith, masking tape on the Birch ply panels can prevent marking them while sanding the framing. This can often be more of a problem when sanding across the grain. I've used this method from time to time, and the thickness of the masking tape doesn't seem to have any effect.
I've always had a problem with drawers. In metal engineering the application of 'fits and limits' means that some clearance is always needed for parts sliding inside others. However, most woodworking videos include statements like, 'the gap was 12 inches and the slides are 1/2 inch each, so I made the drawers 11 inches wide'. I always expect some reference to clearance, but there usually isn't any, so I don't know whether to apply some, or leave it to the slides to magically sort things out because they have some clearance built into their design. But no one ever mentions this possibility, so I remain puzzled!
I'll allow an extra mm next time I think, should have learned from my mistakes by now! 😂
Through experience these ball bearings runners although some might feel tight at the start overtime they usually wear in to run smoothly
08:25 The internal part of the runner can be separated for mounting. Just sayin 👍
0:05 - Surely they won’t fit Keith 😂
They will if you fold them over a few times & press fit with some of his deep reach clamps !!
😂
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to part two. Where did you buy those green shims, shown at the end of the video?
4 or 5 years I bought two sets of shims in Germany. Each set had shims of 1 to 6 mm of thickness. Because they were quite expensive (in my eyes at least, that time),
about 5 Euros per set) I bought only two sets. But it's unbelievable how often I use them. Nearly every day when I'm busy woodworking in my shop.
More shims (10 or so) of the same thickness should come in very handy sometimes (often). But I can't find them anywhere here in Slovakia.
Thanks Hans. They are sold here as"glazing packers" there is also a different type that are 'U' shaped sold as plastic shims. Very handy to have around for sure! 👍
@@RagnBoneBrown Thanks for your quick reply. I think the "U" shaped shims were mentioned by Andy Mac and/or Peter Millard in the past.
This guy must have more coffee tables than cups
Bit of a p.i.t.a forgetting you didn't glue those boards in...
Turned out well in the end, so that's a bonus.
That was an absolute score on that massive sheet of free ply! 👍🏽
Thanks Bill, yeah definitely!
How did you buy the Jorgensen parallel CLAMPS? They don't seem to be available from Amazon UK! Great video by the way
I've bought some Amazon USA stuff in the past, Amazon adds a tariff at point of sale to cover international shipping & import duty and it takes a few days longer, but I've been pleased with the results.
Check my last vlog video, I covered them there 👍
I know we're in Norfolk but do you really have to tell us you mount your drawer 😂
Looking good Keith, I sent you a Instagram message about a wood turning jig hope you got it ok! :-)
Nice project mate. Ive got to ask though is it really cold enough to wear that hat where you are ; )
Cheers It was recorded months ago
Rag 'n' Bone Brown oh right that will explain it then 😂👍
