When you unbox it mines measures 40 in wide does it expand more?

Good mattress overall has held up well and is comfortable for side and stomach sleeper.

The less thick the mattress the harder it is. I get what you mean about the 12 inch maybe being soft but for a side sleeper it's better. The 10 inch and especially the 8 is wayyyy too hard
