I moved abroad for a while and brought my guitar with me. I had to purchase a seat for my guitar which was the same price as putting it in the cargo hold. it was actually super simple and they give you a special seat belt extension for it, you're not allowed to unbuckle it at all during the flight so you won't be serenading any passengers with blink 182

Where I work as a flight attendant you are absolutely allowed to bring big instruments onboard but you are supposed to buy an extra seat for them, make sure that there is some space between them and the PSU (the panel above your head) so just in case of depressurization the masks can safety drop down
So your solution to bring a relatively small guitar on a plane is to a buy a whole seat to pay for another human being to fly who doesn’t even exist? No offense, but I never understand when that’s an airline worker’s first answer (not the first time I’ve heard it). If you’re talking like a cello or upright bass, sure, that makes sense, or if it’s a historically valuable instrument, but most guitars aren’t that big and that’s a hugely overblown, way excessively expensive solution. I can always tell most airline workers have never tried to travel with instruments and have never done what they’re asking you to do themselves when I hear that. Here’s what you should actually do (Rhett Shull’s video on UA-cam about flying with guitars is the best): buy a high quality protective higher end gig bag (like from Mono), ask to do early boarding so you won’t be in other people’s way putting it away, try the overhead first, if it doesn’t fit (especially small planes this can happen) ask if you can put it in the coat closet (if they have one) or behind the last seat. Worst case scenario, if you can’t do those, they have to put it under the plane, but it’s one of the last things out there at that point and you now have a higher quality reinforced case to protect it. Also, keep a copy of the airline’s musical instrument policy printed in your pocket, in case you have crappy employees try to lie and gaslight you about what you can and can’t do (hasn’t ever happened to me yet; they’ve all been nice and so have I, but this part comes from a few stories I’ve heard). Even with United, which I’ve universally heard from other guitarists is the worst, most unaccommodating airline for flying with small instruments, hasn’t given me issues when I’ve done everything I’ve said. Just be extra reasonable and nice and set that tone for the airline workers.

Even in a normal hard shell case, I’ve seen and heard horror stories, even from famous musicians, about what some of those glue sniffers do on the tarmac with people’s luggage. A common result of their abuse with guitars has been snapped necks, huge chunks of body separated from the guitar, etc. I heard one story that they drove one of those cars over someone’s guitar once (I think that was Vivian Campbell’s Les Paul to be exact). But of course at your own risk.

There is a law for American Airlines that they must allow musicians to carry their instrument on the plane(there is a size and weight limit) but guitars are certainly allowed and they have to pay for it if it gets damaged during the flight
I think it might be prohibited on some airlines. For instance, we have maximum volume (there's often even a special frame that you must fit it in) for the piece of luggage you can bring with you on board.

I’ve only had to do this ONCE, and I just stuck it between myself and the chair in front and dealt with it the whole way. No one else got disturbed, and it worked out fine (I had sore knees though, I’m 6’3 and it was pretty cramped 😂)
in the US the airline is legally required to store the guitar for you so it doesn't get wrecked and you don't need to take up a bunch of luggage space.
