Fun fact about Jinjer, back when they were an underground band with barely any gigs, they were all roommates somewhere in northern Ukraine. When Russia invaded the Ukraine 2015 or 16 and claimed the Crimean peninsula, this band fled south. The week following when they moved out of their apartment, a bomb done blowed up their building. They were traveling to Kiev in a van and they were stopped by Russian military and detained for a day while all their instruments were searched before getting to Kiev as well. Within 6 months of getting to their new city Napalm Records found them and they immediately blew up. They still aren't very popular in Ukraine. However, with Tatianna's first pay check, she moved her mom out of her home city to get away from the war.
Just some interesting trivia for anyone who cares.

    • @tomislavkosanovic1104
      @tomislavkosanovic1104 3 роки тому +8

That's some great info. That bomb could've robbed us of some real greatness.
"They still aren't very popular in Ukraine". I guess they just don't know what they got. Though I'm sure there's a small nucleus of people there forming a quality metal scene, judging from Jinjer.

I live in a nearby country, so I may have more information on the situation. Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2014, Jinjer are from Donetsk, which is North of the annexed Crimea, but still very close to Russia. Donetsk has been torn apart in war since 2014 because of territorial disputes and because of the large Russian community in East Ukraine.
At that point Vlad, the current drummer wasn't part of the band, and Dmitriy, founding member, and former guitarist still would've been part of the band.
To bring a somewhat lighter note - here's another fun fact from their interviews, this happened around the same time. The band was on their way to play a festival in Kiev, a driver came into their lane from the opposite direction, Eugene, who was driving, turned the van into the side of the road and the van stopped in the mud. Tati checked outside, the van was just hanging on by the mud, a little bit more and they all go off a cliff. They didn't make the festival, Vlad jokes that he played it for them, as he was in another band at the time.

You picked the best version to react to. This one is incredible and really displays Tatiana's talent. I agree, as somebody that's listened to rock and metal for 20 years I haven't been this excited in a new band in a loooong time. They are so unique.

“The whole song is reggae” - I noticed they like to do this. They will compose a song in a different style, and then adapt it to metal. Most people recognize her rapping at the beginning of teacher, teacher, but few seem to have caught that the entire song is hip hop. Home Back too - the whole song is Jazz, with a touch of a funk feel, but played Metal.

Yeah dawg! When you brought Rush into the conversation you earned my sub, even though these reactions are years old. I'm an old skool Rush nerd. Saw them 36x in concert. 2112 was my intro, and Hemispheres was my first concert, and still my favorite album.
Jinjer had that same kind of excitement to me. Like when you first heard Zeppelin. Or the first time you heard Eddie play Eruption. Undeniable energy and inspiration. Jinjer is up there with Rush live, and that's the highest compliment. And you can still see them up close and personal from the front row, without spending a fortune!

  • @eqgilethan
    @eqgilethan 3 роки тому +24

Great observations! I immediately hit the like button when you brought up how Rush also incorporated their vast influences into their music just as Jinjer does now. Great examples after of other "unique" bands with a similar approach. I agree, beyond technical ability and great writing, being influenced by a variety of genres and incorporating that within their own 'unique' style, makes a very good band, great.

I'm 64, I was into metal back when it was called just heavy rock with Blue Cheer etc. Then Led Zeppelin came along with Hendrix et al who claimed the originality of it all. Like you I had about 2 decades of hiatus from metal essentially even though I still dabbled at the edges while trying to keep a grip on making a living and caring for and about others. Now I have been able to resume the journey of music and what a time it is. There is so much amazing music around now (For the last 10 years) where it seemed to languish with what I now regard as placeholders supplying the needs of metal fans. Now there is so much going on and not just a resurgence but a whole new flourishing of styles...... What a time to be still living now there are younger ones who have not only taken the baton but have carved their names upon it and will become legends of music in their own right and by their own names. They won't be compared to other but there will be others who will be compared to them, they are setting a new standard and this warms my soul. I think the music is now in good hands for the next step. I hope I live to see it.

Great reaction! It is impossible not to appreciate Tatianna, and Eugene and Vlad are incredible and stand out in their individual greatness. And then there's Roman. I love this guy, I love watching his playthrough videos. He is so solid every time. He just quietly does his thing and let's the others get all the recognition. I imagine it's just his personality, or maybe he is just shy about his English. It's tough to find info about him. We rarely see him in interviews or making himself stand out. But the man is solid, carrying the weight of both a lead and rhythm guitar in one, and blending both with Eugene and Vlad to create an amazing, full sound for Tati to shine on. He rarely gets the love he deserves. Roman is a stud, an incredible artist, and deserves his place, playing with amongst one of the best bands out there.

OldSkuleNerd, Look at her posture when she goes in to her growl parts, you can see she plants her heels and straightens up a bit. Her growling is called "false cords", and it's exactly like it sounds. There are flaps in the throat similar to the vocal cords that can produce that deep growl without damaging the real vocal cords, which are completely relaxed during the growl.

Interesting parallel between Rush and Jinjer, in how they pull in so many influences. Actually, Band-Maid are doing this too--you'll hear jazz, samba, funk, rock, metal and classical in their arrangements. Re. Zeppelin--they came out of British blues, and went from there. I saw them live in '77. Part of a short stretch in which I saw Purple, Sabbath, Queen and Nazareth, among others. I had to wait some 35+ years for the music to begin to approach that level again. But it's here now, and you are in for a RIDE!

This is a high false chord scream/growl. She is using vestibular folds that are actually above her true vocal chords and her strength comes from lots of controlled diaphragm support.

I'm going back and catching up on the OSN stuff that I missed before recently falling into the rank and file. Today was Jinjer Day. Man, oh man are you on point with your comments about them through each reaction. Then to toss out Rush and Led Zeppelin as examples in one vid while talking up reggae ... Not only did you have me shaking my head agreeing with you, but I was flashing back to my stadium concert days. I walked away from rock & metal after around the early 2000's. No Doubt had become an acceptable household name band versus being the rebels. So what you shared is what I went through. Now, through you, I'm rediscovering it all again. While I may not be a ginger fan, in ref to the root - my son is a redheaded, I am now a Jinjer fan. Pass the sushi and wasabi please.

The songs to try at first are Warning, Rat Race, Nobody, Kill The Power, even if you don’t do a reaction video, just give them a try, you will love it I am sure if you liked this Jinjer one.

You seem to really get the thing that makes Jinjer so interesting - they don’t appear to have any rules or preconceived regulations about what “Jinjer” is supposed to be. It’s refreshing to see fearless artists play music that they find interesting and inspiring, rather than catering to what the they think the “metal world,” one of the most ridiculously snarky and snobby fan bases of all music genres, expects them to sound like in order to be a member of the club. These guys aren’t afraid to groove and swing, and you never know when Tatiana will channel Amy Winehouse and Gwen Stefani. They’re all fully formed and expertly proficient and imaginative musicians. Roman is one of the most complete and underrated guitarists out there, Eugene shows that there is so much more to playing bass than just holding down the bottom line, and Vlad is a freak of a mult-instrumentalist, and my favorite game to play is “what count will the snare hits be on this song.”

The reason you don't see stress on her vocal chords when she does the gutteral parts is because she is bypassing them to utilize her false vocal chords. If you look closely, you can see her vox flexing during the clean parts, but not otherwise.

There is an interview with Eugene and Tati where the host brings up the fact that Judgment and Punishment is one of the hits off of the record. I like your Rush comparison. They have compressed Rush's 40 years of musical exploration into a few year and overlapped it all. It's very impressive. Another band that has evolved musically a lot throughout their career is Opeth. They have divided some old fans by "going soft" but early or late their stuff is amazing, and they are my favourite band. Lots of people react to Blackwater Park/Ghost of Perdition and rightly so, they are amazing. I love your take on this song and recognizing the comparison of incorporation of the different styles like Rush and Led Zeppelin. This is what made me fall in love with Jinjer back in 2016. I've been a Led head since 1976 and influenced my taste of music to explore so many genres. Eventually I went on to sing in a hardcore death metal band and I always tried to incorporate those other styles that influenced me. I'm 50 now and the journey still countinues. I would love to see your reaction to Gwar - Sick of you

Next from here for Jinjer would be to check out Retrospection - she sings part of the song in her native language (I can't remember if it's Russian or Ukrainian because different parts of the country use both), but it's really cool to hear.

    Firstly. Great reactions
    Secondly. Suggestions.
    1. You like Floor. You need to check her previous band Revamp and do the song Disdain live at Graspop 2010. Different style to Nightwish but great vocals.
Side note. Floor has a younger, taller sister Irene. Also a singer. There are duets of the two on you tube if you want to check it out.
    2. You like a good Dio cover. Try Liliac doing Holy Diver. Five siblings age range 13 - 21 but damn do they nail it imo.
You like UK crowds then add going to the Download festival to your bucket list.

(Bypassing the Vestibular cords and use the false vocal cords to make resonance with the air)!!
You have a great ear man!

Minor little detail I have picked up after seeing the original video so many times. On the inside of Tatiana's right wrist, there's a modified Pisces symbol.
I point this out because of the dual nature of their song Pisces.
    That's me done...

So how a singing voice use the vocal cords... The growls use something known as the false cords... It allows the growl without tearing up the actual vocal cords... Now, I don't personally know how to do this, but I know OF it lol

When I first started listening to Jinjer, 2 bands immediately sprang to mind. Rush and Blue Oyster Cult. Both of those bands were pretty fearless as far as trying new things to incorporate their influences into their music. They were “progressive”, “experimental”, and genre bending. This lead me to classify Jinjer, at least in my own head, as Prog Metal, though they do tend to defy easy classification. 😉 Ultimately, they are outstanding musicians and that’s what really matters.

This song is partially about people making a judgment on Tatiana actually being able to do the vocals that she does and saying that it is studio effects. This was the perfect song for a vocal one take. "Your pissed off narrow mind, can't believe what it hears"
