  • I often get asked about how loud quail are and if they will annoy the neighbors. It really depends on a few things but for the most part they aren't any louder than the wild bird population. In this video I discuss and demonstrate exactly how loud they are my experience with my neighbors.

    A lot of the people that complain about stuff like this have dogs that bark all day. They can leave their dogs out all day barking and put them inside when they get home, but have the nerve to be annoyed by some other sound when they're outside?

    When I got my first Quail it was a complete nuby mistake on my end, they were all roosters. Was able to get in contact with a friend and trade them out for some hens the next day.
    My neighborhood is slightly more condensed than what you were showing. My only saving grace is that quail kind of sound like normal Birds. From a young age people are taught what a chicken sounds like. I'm sure not a lot of people especially those who don't raise animals know what a quail sounds like.

    You always put out good info. My question is...will a cockbird crow less if he doesn’t have competition and has a good number of females? I mainly want egg production. I raised before for eggs so when all my males reached maturity they also met the loppers. I have 24, 5 day olds now. I’ll have two separate runs so I can keep a cockbird separate with only 4-5 hens. All the other hens will be separate that way I know I’m only harvesting infertile eggs from that covey. Any advice would be greatly welcomed!! Thanks for the awesome videos!!

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the kind comments. Roosters tend to crow a lot when they first come of age. Regardless of the amount of other males or females around. It is just their nature. They do calm down as they get older but the amount of males and females around doesn't seem to have much affect on them. I hope that helps.

    • @mikereddy1019
      @mikereddy1019 4 роки тому +1

      It does!! Thank you. Yeah...the coming of age birds are a boisterous bunch. My daughters and I were camping out back and it was about 6am when I told my youngest...we’re having quail for dinner. Kept the rest of the hens for 2 more years. I’d love to keep male to eventually rotate stock but very weary of a few neighbors. That’s the best thing about quail hens...very little space needed, quiet as can be, egg layin machines, don’t break the bank on feed. Thanks again.

      @@mikereddy1019 the roosters sound like little screaming demons and haven't stopped crowing since they were 5 or 6 weeks old, that was 3 or 4 weeks ago, 22 out of 24 hours per day, I'm losing my fucking mind.

      Screaming demons? You must have different birds. Lol Cause mine now and before sound similar to a blue jay. A trill. But nowhere near as loud nor does it carry. My advice would be then to harvest them. Unless you plan on raising and incubating a ton of birds...cockbirds just take up space and eat.

    I have one neighbor that has still found some way to complain and call animal control. Good thing is im not breaking any rules or regulations and there is nothing they can do. Just wish my neighbor would come and talk to me about his concerns because I could possibly move them further away or whatever.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 років тому +3

      You know, you could go and talk to your neighbor. Show up with a dozen eggs and instructions on how to cook them. it may mean doing that once or twice but it shouldn't be a big deal to say "You know I raise some quail back there...are they bothering you at all? I can move them or make adjustments if there is an issue with them." He may just be a jerk to start with and then you can go back to not caring what he thinks. Then again he may just be lonely and need some excitement in his life so he gripes about everything.

    i have 10 Japanese quail at home that i keep for eggs. 8 of them are hens and 2 are cocks. however, today I have taken 21 eggs out of their cages, despite taking out 8 each day for the previous week. is it possible they could be laying 2 - 3 eggs per day? I'm very confused!

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 років тому +4

      It is possible that they could but seems unlikely that all of them would on the same day. Unless you are absolutely sure you didn't miss a day I would call that the most unusual thing ever and you might consider playing the lottery. :)
      What more than likely happened is that you are collecting eggs at random times and a span longer than you think passed between egg collecting so you got 2 days worth of eggs and a a few laid an extra egg or two. They do that from time to time but it is somewhat rare. I hope that helps.

    • @RCSpain

      If you increase the number of hours of light during the day (eg florescents) you will get more eggs and more double yolks. This could be the reason.

    I have over 30 quail. I've not noticed them being loud. The neighbor that's 600yards away has chickens and I hear the. All the time.
    They only time I hear the quail is when I go to feed and water them or they have laid eggs. They have distinct sounds. The roos sound like the Korean dude on the Lucy movie when he's asking where she went in Korean at the end of the show. The hens make a birbbling sound right after they lay eggs.

    i love rooster noises. The neighbors need to stop bitching and behaving like spoiled children. Before the industrial revolution it was common to raise chickens. If somehow we lost the current technology and went back to being farmers...I wonder how those neighbors would do. Kil themselves because of noisy chickens? Also I think car noises are way worse than chicken noises.

      oh now. How did you end up with a baby rabbit that hasn't opened it's eyes yet? I am sorry to say but it is highly unlikely you will be able to keep it alive. It needs to be kept warm (cover it with bedding material from a pillow or dish towels). It will also need to be fed twice a day at least. You will need to go to a local farm supply store and pick up a formula. Look for something related to small animals. if they don't have anything like that look for kitten formula. Good luck and i hope it works out.
