Some people start painting with 50 and we are actually sooo young and can improve so much in our life that one day we will become good artists. Your comments about starting by painting with layers reminded me of a writing class I took. The whole semester was spent rewriting. We rewrote anywhere from 5 to seven times. Each rewrite (layer) made the written piece better. With the written word, we were able to compare the last rewrite to the original piece. The difference was astonishing. I guess the same goes for painting.

I am so excited to use oil paints again! I am good at drawing and multi-mediums but it has been 20 years since I used oil paint!

The part where you talk about some artists just going straight into the painting without drawing got me thinking, and I think a good amount of an artist’s ability to do that has to do with muscle memory. Just like professional athletes rely on muscle memory. The more you practice drawing (or shooting a 3 pointer), the stronger your muscle memory for the act is, and eventually you can just whip out the paintbrush and go. Especially if you tend to paint just a handful of subject types. Personally, I’ve just about reached that point with equine figures. But that’s because I’ve spent the better part of 20 years sketching horses for the love of it. On the contrary, I could not do that with a landscape, because I have not practiced that. Thank you for your videos sharing all these tips for oil painting. You’ve been invaluable in my starting to learn oil painting for real as I transition from watercolors!

Excellent video and well thought out points. I'm starting to focus more on painting in multiple layers now, as I just feel it's needed to create something great - not always but most of the time it seems. Your videos were the first ones that really made sense to me regarding how to layer - fat over lean etc.. I still may not get it 100% lol, but mostly understand it. I understand it technically but the application of it is a bit more difficult to me. Anyways, great video :)
Excellent video, as always Florent! I have to agree on the drawing part. It seems most people wish to skip that, but unless people really understand painting from larger abstract shapes first towards more detail on top, it's unlikely they succeed. What many people don't know is that you can sketch quite comfortably using oils, erase out paint using a paper towel (with turpentine / mineral spirit added). Spend enough time on that, with just a single colour and drawing will improve with each new painting. :)
Love your video. A good commonsense insruction for us learners. My query is: i started a painting on canvas in acrylic. I painted over this with oil some years ago. The painting I hate. Can I get back to the acrylic underpainting?
Gunny Jones maybe your question has already been answered . If that is so, I would like to know what it was. If not, my thinking is that you might have to get a type of paint remover that would remove the oil paint but not the acrylic. An easier solution would be to lightly sand the painting and then covering with an OIL ( not acrylic ) based primer.
You mentioned layers 13:20. Can you make a video explaining what layers to start with? I watched in your videos how you start with a certain shade of color in regard to the later shades. Is there a specific darkness you use ad a base layer? Does it depend on the light angle etc? This will help.
Love your videos. Loved the comment that the rules are the step the genius uses to launch into the stratosphere. Brilliant way to put it. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge. Your paintings are soulful and beautiful.

This was a very classical perspective on how to become a better artist and it is a very important way, but my experience as a teacher is that dependent on your goal it May be necessary to combine improvisation, experimentation, loosening up, playing to avoid only drawing and painting from "the left side of the brain" and entering a different mode of experiencing and working.
I love the facial expression when you say,"you have to spend a lot of time." That bit of info is so underwhelmed. People that don't truly understand art think that people are "talented." That is just no the case as most of know... It's time, not talent.

I am an artist relearning how to paint. I can't draw well at all, so I just go straight for the painting. If i try to draw first it just doesnt look right

Personally, although I have never actually timed it, I think spend much more time drawing than I do painting. Always carry a sketchbook and pencil etc, then, even if you only have a few minutes, you can do a quick drawing.

That's why after 4 years i still drawing and study drawing principles and i'm sure that painting after that wilk take a very few months to understand it...ok i stop at the first tip, after i finsh everything in drawing i will come again listen the the next 4 tips.

Apply fixative as coating after the charcoal so you can apply paint on top of it. :)

Brush on sodium silicate (waterglass) on the plaster casting and get a protected surface. How deep it will penetrate i don't know.
