Thank you so much for this lesson! You had managed to explain the subject to me that other art teachers couldn't. It's a rare case when an artist bothers to transform their intuitive painting process into a technology on such a deep level. Many blessings to you!
You have an extraordinary way of clearly explaining basic techniques that others seem to gloss-over. Your skill in realising this information is absorbing to watch. Thanks for all your work.
I've struggled with the concept of soft and hard edges for many years, and your video really helped in breaking it down for me. You are an absolutely brilliant teacher, thank you so much for making this video!
Hello. It is important to understand what Tzavaras mentions in the video that the way the edges are handled defines the style. This video shows how to do it for a more impressionistic, atmospheric and gestural style. Excellent demonstration. Thank you
Great video again! I'm so grateful for the content you put out to help all of us out. Your video about opaque and transparent colors was such an eye-opener for me and really lifted my whole painting process to another level! Thanks for your work! Keep it up!
...and the crowd goes wild!!!.... EXACTLY what I needed to hear on value/ edges that I've been missing in some of my work. (Been drawing since I was 6, but just started oil painting 6 months ago.) THANK YOU!
I appreciate the recap at the end. For me, one of the most important concepts was the last one: don't leave too many hard edges. Not only will they distract the viewer, but also lose the painterly feeling and become a graphic. Love that. Thanks again and cheers.
I can't explain how much im grateful for your videos. This is the best channel with true knowledge and techniques in painting. You're doing a very wonderful job sir!
I'm a beginner to oil painting, struggling with my edge control - I'll try to apply your tips to my work! It's fascinating that dark will blend more smoothly into light than light into dark, I have never heard of that. I think working on more deliberate brushstrokes will also help me, rather than overblending. Thank you for the very helpful video, I think it will save me some frustration!
Glad you found this helpful. Simple still lives like this and also working on monochrome are a great way to focus your practice on paint handling. And yes, try your best to be deliberate, try to touch the canvas with as few brushstrokes as possible. Which is really hard. When I watch back these videos, I still always catch myself fiddling around too much.
Good video. That's one way to tackle edges. I think you may be being a little dogmatic saying don't blend edges though. Painting into edges with more paint is certainly one way. You can also make a single sweep of a soft brush to blend edges and this is exactly what you see in works by Zorn and Sargent as well modern masters like Schmid. This is blending edges optically because at a distance it creates the illusion of intermediate values. Depending on the direction of the brush stroke and how sensitively the stoke is made the edge can be varied from soft to hard and the edges can have a vibrancy and energy too.
What separates a good teacher from a great one is they're talent for explaining complex concepts and choosing what will improve theyre work the most based on what gives an artist more choices and control over the work. I for one will never stop learning , and I also like to review and revisit techniques like this one , and also the fact that shadow edges or boundaries should appear softer , and where the light hits an object that edge should appear a bit sharper. As well as keeping some shadows transparent Thx 4 another 👍 video .
You are sharing very useful informations which an amateur painter looking for, like me. You are a dedicated teacher, who knows the heart of a real devoted artist. Thanks a lot. God bless.
Very good tips! Art is so interesting, but can be frustrating, it's nice to be shown and extends the interest in what is a rewarding and fascinating hobby which I've started during lockdown at age 74! Every encouragement is welcome thank you for your valuable teaching
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and techniques!! esp the tip abt the dark color applied on light which gives soft edges was an Aha moment!! Truly grateful for the efforts you put in making these vdos and the quick recap at the end! 🙏
well done. I've been puzzled by this issue while working on my first oil. Some artists tell you to blend while others point out as you do to paint each value separately. It works if you can overcome the urge to blend. You have brought this home for me.
There aren't as many soft edges in landscape painting (apart from clouds) and you normally see more edge variety, say around the edges of trees, the nearer they are to you.
Muchas, muchas gracias. Es usted muy generoso al compartir tanta y tan valiosa información. Nunca en mi época de academia de arte aprendí tanto de alguien
I have to say this is the most subtle and simple tutorial i have ever watched, Mr Tzavaras thank you so much, I've spent a lot of long times trying to get to those important conceptions and understanding, in only ten minutes, you have just summarized ART.. Thank you This is best simple art channel on youtube ... Just go ahead 👍
Thank you very much! So glad you find it useful. This one took me a while to make. The painting, filming and editing is quite straightforward, but actually writing them takes time. Trying to figure out what I think are the most import concepts and how best to explain them in a short space of time.
Such a good explanation of the basics in painting which is invaluable when learning .Quite a rarity to find an artist who is willing to put the time into great teaching . Thank you so much . Would be great to go to one of your classes .
Timely n succinct advises! Current oil painting of mine too many hard edges. Too distracting. U r right! Dark paint over light color to soften edges and to transition tip useful too!
I keep two sticky notes on my easel where I can always see them, that say, "Stand back!" and "Squint!", so I don't forget to do either when I get all caught up in a painting.
THIS, yes, THIS. All THIS. Couldn’t agree more. It has been a weakness for some reason. Transitions, fine....edges around objects like petals...ugh, my bain . 🤨 I helped to move past this frustration by limiting myself to palette knife painting only to allow myself to let go of the mental issue I had with the stiffness I had with edges. I could then focus on value and tones. I don’t fuss over edges as much anymore. I’m a lifetime watercolor artist moving over to other media....a lifetime of watercolor training has a whole set of habits. Not a whole lot of changes and blending one can do later.
very grateful for your explanations, it is of great value to me, I hope that others will come soon! The concept of modeling (because of its simplicity) is very illuminating to understand the technique of painting

Nice. I've been practicing not putting an edge on the shadow side where it meets the cast shadow. The light into dark rule is probably why Ive had a hard time getting soft edges. I'll give it a go. Thanks
so appreciate your incredible generosity and knowledge...stunning painting! I look forward to listening very carefully to what you are saying, and trying for myself! Thanks so very much!

the knowledge you give away for free is almost criminal ;) thank you so much - you're a wonderful teacher!
Haha. Thanks. I ended up editing this down and leaving quite a lot out. I wasn't how long people could stand watching me paint a cup.
