Yngwie Malmsteen is one of my favourite guitar players, & learning (or trying to..) some of his tunes and licks really helped me develop as a guitarist. Going from pretty much 100% pentatonic box 1 to learning the minor scale, harmonic minor & learning to sweep pick etc.
So here's a guitar lesson of 5 Yngwie Malmsteen style licks that I remember learning which really changed my playing! + tabs
Hope you enjoy it!

That was an awesome video man. Unlike most people who shred, you actually slowed it down and really showed how to play each piece. You’re the kind of teacher we all need. You make it seem obtainable. Cheers.
thanks ! yngwie is the man keep bringing more !
Great lesson video, thanks for posting this video! The tabs definitely helped 👍
Troy Grady did a very deep study of Malmsteen's picking hand, don't know if you have seen it, very good lesson, thanks for helping us! appreciate you!
yeah I thought I knew Yngwie until I saw Troy's analysis.
Chris Brooks also has a great book about neo classical shred and a video series The Yng Way that is great. Thanks for the lesson!
Great lesson. Thanks mate.
The way u teach is so simple, perfect lesson to the point. Thanks
Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed it
Something to keep in mind, Yngwie doesnt use strict alternate picking. If hes descending and the the string has an odd number of notes he does a pull off so that hes not picked trapped on the next string. Ascending he sweeps down to every next string to avoid the pick getting trapped and having to lift up and over a string. This caused me years off problems on strict alternate picking and it just felt off on odd number of notes per string. I instantly could play Yngwie lines once I figured this out. Look at his videos, his pick hand barely moves. You cant look like that alternate picking only up and down the scales.
Dude it's amazing how much my guitar heroes lied to me lol I spent most of the pandemic watching modern teachers break this stuff down and watching videos slowed down on UA-cam and it's been a game changer.
Yep, I've come the conclusion that alternate picking is propped up too much. If you practice enough, you can theoretically alternate pick anything, but economy picking is just much easier and more consistent in a lot of cases. Even Michael Angelo Batio I believe said he economy picks a lot more nowadays. You can't really teach Yngwie's licks without bringing up how he actually achieves his speed (economy picking and situational legato).
Excellent job my friend. Bin working on this stuff for a minute through other guys tutorials, but the way you approach it seems to agree with me more than anyone else. Thank you bro!! Sean Black
Thanks Rob, cool lesson,
and I subscribed for more. Keep up the gr8 work...!!!
Thank you SO much for this!! Huge YJM fan!! Trying to start playing again. I needed this, GREAT breakdown!! ( awesome playing man!!)
awesome mate rock on
lol i was circling aroung in phrygian scales for a like 6 months and i cant believe how fast a learned these licks :D
Awesome bro thanks for share!!!
The Thumbs Down Guy I Found and BROKE his THUMBS😎😇
The second lick I always wanted to learn thank you!!!
Thanks Rob 🤘🏼
Thanks and great job! :)
Always start by showing at full speed so that you have a reference point for how it should sound when you listen to the slow version.
ROB GALLEY, can you make a new video showing all yngwies finger tapping licks? and phyrgian ygnwie licks
Love the way you put in scale tab, thanks, could apply in any scale, just using same paterns
Thank you man
Yes, I enjoyed very much. Thanks a lot for your great lesson!
No probs! 🤟
Cool breakdown of Yngwie's stuff. His use of Paganini-style pedal point (or pedal tone) like the lick in "Vengeance" from Magnum Opus is one of his go-to licks. You nailed the technique in Lick 2 and Lick 4. Well done.
All the best from the Bay Area.
MK
Thanks so much my man!
Tny so much man that helps a lot
Thanks man!!! Enjoyed learning them. I've popped them in my locker for the next time I'm at a guitar store and I need to melt some faces!!!
Pretty cool video!
Excellent
Another great video, Rob! Yeah Yngwie’s playing was always crazy & fast! That was awesome!Hoping most people are old enough to know who he is. Just went through my records the other day -I have the Hear N Aid one that has Yngwie, members of Dio, Brad Gillis(my fave), BÖC, Quiet Riot, twisted sister & others!
Donna cheers Donna! His playing is awesome. That sounds like a great record!
Hear N Aid is Epic!! I thought it was funny how most of the guitar players who didn't have a strong enough personality (and even some that did) ended up emulating what Yngwie did..
Hearing aid stars and all those players are legends , pleased to hear others enjoying them 🤘🏻🕶🤘🏻🎸
Thank you!
Niccce Lesson Rob! I'm goin' to give this a go tomorrow. Cheers Thankx Like 9
Todd aka SodaPop nice one Todd! Hope you enjoy trying the licks out!
Thank you 🙏🏽
nicely done dude. makes the tricky feel pretty accessible.
Thanks so much for watching!
No joke! Learning trilogy suite (even if played poorly and not anywhere nearly Yngwie) when early on really shaped my alternate picking.
ROB GALLEY, can you show in a video how to play a lot of different "diminished pedal tone licks" and "diminished finger tapping licks"? showing a bunch of yngwie phrygian dominant licks
That's some serious rapid picking! Great video
Steve Reynolds cheers Steve! Had to have a serious practice before filming this 😂
Bravo man I can’t read tab or music the way you teach is awesome. ! Cheers!
Really appreciate it man thanks!
can you make a video of a bunch of harmonic minor licks that yngwie does and his arpeggios he does in the song the seventh sign?
bill williams I’ll look into it for sure!
That’s great any tips on getting that sound too? ;)
Hey I love your video. I have a question regarding yngwie. I heard he switches strings on upstrokes only, so for the 1st lick should I be adding a pull off in order to ensure my last note on the string is an upstroke?
That’s an option - other options could be changing whether you start your lick on an downstroke or an upstroke. For example if you’re playing a 3 note per string lick - picking down up down - Would then ensure you’re changing strings on an up. However that same picking pattern for a two note per string lick would mean you end up changing strings on the Down pick which isn’t what you want! So change it to start on a upstroke. Alternatively check out economy picking 🤟
Great ! Except for the solo at 4:15 on the first part the notes are :
12 15-14-15 13 15-14-15 ..... etc
*NOT* 12 15-13-15 ;)
Lick 2 was so sick.
Hi Rob, nice sound! What amp/pedals did you use?
Rob, what's the name of these pickups?
What's up with only 46 likes!? This is the good sh!#!! Thanks for the breakdown!
(Is that an MG2 battery Marshall?? Those little beasts rock!!)
ssolo8 thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :) & no it’s just a really small Marshall cab hah
Rising Force was everything.
***** great thks
Thanks for watching!
It's a great lesson, thanks mate! I have question - My favourite is the third lick with sweep picking. I've managed to learn it more or less but I have no idea in which key I can use it? I've tried several keys and it doesn't match...
That's the thing about diminished7 chords or arpeggios. They work as long as you can land on a note that's in key. Since they're symmetrical, you can shift around the shape and still the notes will remain the same
Thats great lesson, and the sound is very closed with original yngwie, would you like to share how to get that Mr.?, Dist. , Eq, delay , etc ,Thanks
It really helps to use a Strat style guitar on the neck pickup, tuned to Eb. Then for amp settings it’s quite a treble-ey tone with fairly high mids too I reckon. Mostly just experiment hah 🤟
what amp did you use it sounds killer nice playing btw
Cool man, thanks. I like them all, but I'm really digging #4 right now. Pretty much got it up to speed.
Also....how about the tab for the last one at 12:02?
It’s a lick from a Yngwie song called Baroque & roll - there’s definitely tabs for that which will have the lick in! 🤟
Great and easy vid. What exact model is the guitar and pickups? Just curiosity;-)
Just a stock Mexican Fender Strat with stock pickups, nothing fancy! Running through Bias fx on my computer 🤟
well, tell mee per beat how much note?
you and i got same strat mim colour is also same
in 3:56 is a bloody FART
I also think you should listen to Robin Trower at Winterland 1975
4th lick
What song it is?
Hey im new very good explanation,,😁
Top
IAm 9 and dis is kool
I think I've heard him playing something a bit Arabic. Anyone suggests a song in that sense? I don't remember the name
With a scalloped neck you can really "grab the notes by the balls".😄
Scale of the licks????
Dude, what happened to your volume knob?
slappyJmarsden I took it off, I just find that it gets in the way of my picking hand
@@RobGalley I know, Right! A bit of vigorous strumming and I've turned myself down to about 7. :\
Great vid man, and great technique!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Like and subscription on channel!🤘🏻🎸🎶
I think all of his licks challenge my playing
Geetar is life definitely true 😂 he’s nuts
Yngwie challenges Symphony Orchestras!
One Two Free..
I had to slow the video just to listen to the notes that was so fast.
Would love to hear all of this, including yng, using a actual acoustic nylon guitar… not mic’ed, no delay, no reverb, no phaser, no distortion, e.t.c!
Let’s be real… yes, this dude and yng are both amazing guitarist. However no one has the balls to play this stuff raw!
It's amazing how many videos there are on youtube of people playing Yngwie licks that can't actually play Yngwie licks.
Thanks for commenting.
Its the scales and patterns that help people. Getting them 2 speed is up to you. Dont be an ass!
@@RobGalley Im feeling it! Yngwie is damn sure inspiring. Made me actually notice guitars in music and had me in my local music store fast. Never looked back.
Of course it would be a Trumptard talking shit
lol im in standard
Hahahahahà
can you show in legato way...speed picking sound dirty...
this kid looks like andy warski
Had to google him 😂
1. -666-
Lick 1 is tougher than it looks. lol
8750 suscribes ????
More than 50000 visits??? Oh my fucking God!!! What's wrong with you people???
Have you listen that terrible way of picking??? I've survived 1:50
OH
MY
FUCKING
GOD
Учись играть!!!
Your right hand technique looks really weird and tense. Not very relaxed.
You struggle to much.
With what? What does that even mean?
@@RobGalley Just relax your hand left fingers bro...I'm just starting to learn Yngwie licks myself and you did a great job on your video. What Panos means is you're left hand it seems tensed just try to relax it more that's all. Light touching this is where a scalloped neck helps you develop a light touch this is where Yngwie understood why a scalloped neck is so cool. I struggle with my left hand tensing up as well... You're great player!
