Great vid Nick! So something funny happened. I finished a whip order for a friend and I had to wax it. Although the freezing temperatures must've short circuited my roaster. So I had to cook my wax in the oven. Lol. It actually worked pretty well. Keep up the good work bro!

I have to thank you for this tutorial everything worked out amazingly I added a few feet to the longest 3 on the overlay and tied a taper twist fall and it came out as a really great little whip I appreciate it
I would like to make a whip for family member who is a working cowhand do you have any suggestions on what type of Whip style and length works well for a seated position from horseback
thanks nick. just finished the 2nd belly. watching you makes it easier for me to do the quality i desire. the bare bones bullwhip i built in April is holding up well. i extended to 4:, so my taper is not ideal, but i am learning much. how is everything with you?
I had a heck of a time with BBs and 550 lol, I'll need to try the 650 next time. Also Nick, glad to see you using this zink plated BBs. I prefer them over the copper coated ones, they don't rust as easily.
I'm a little late to the party but Walmart has Paracord 1000 heavy duty that accepts bb's well for core strand. If you use it on a bullwhip on a 1/4" rod you need to grind it down a bit with a belt grinder but that also helps keep bulk down when fitted flush for transition bindings
Great video Nick! Guess what temperature it is here. 64 degrees! 0 degrees would be a nice change. I'm also stuck with 120 degree summers. But that's enough about me. Keep up the great work!
To keep measurements at top. Do I need to add 1" to each of the strands or 2" as each strand folds over to compensate for when we chop off? Example: 1st belly would be: 2 x 11'2", 1 x 4'2", 1 x 2'8" or just one inch total before folding?
Hey Nick, Just found your tutorials, my son and I are going to try making a whip, of course with your instruction. I’m not sure where to start? I’ve watched a number of your videos and just wish your face was in the videos! Lol! My hubby has a 12ft. Bull Whip, so hopefully he will teach us how to Crack that Whip! Thanks Nick. Deb
I am making this whip and the lengths for the first belly are incorrect. The first dropped strand occurs about 4 inches before the end of the BBs. I have started over twice; I ended up adding length to the 4 foot and 2 1/2 foot strands. Are the lengths correct for the second belly? I guess I am about to find out.
I added an extra 6 inches to the cord length for the 1st belly and still fell short by about 3 inches of making it to the end of the BBs. It would help if you rather said "strands drop at x y and z lengths from the butt" and I could just cut them at that distance. At this point I'm just going to add like 2 feet of cord to all measurements and eyeball it as I go.
Great video and whip! I've been using your method of making bullwhips and snake whips for several years now. I don't sell them, more for therapy for me and awesome gifts for my friends and family. Will you be making a new video on your current bullwhip method?
Just finished my second whip. Didn’t quite complete the first one yet from your other video. What can I say, I’m hooked. I’ll be trying a bull whip next. Curious as to regulation on those as far as competition. Any stats you would care to share would be greatly appreciated. These videos of yours are awesome! BTW, I’m a bit of a storm chaser myself. I do PDR. Thanks
Ok...hey Nick....im trying to make a longer snake whip based off this video and the measurements given on ur website for the bull whip. I have read that the weighted core should run about a third of the way down the length of the whip...my question is: for the 1st overlay over the core... Should there be any of the core exposed at the end when starting the 2nd overlay? Or should the taper be solely determined by dropping strands on the way down the whip? The reason I ask is because going off of the 8-foot strand measurements on your website by the time I'm done platting the the 1st overlay on the core and dropping all the strands... I only end up with about three and a half feet of plaited whip on that 1st overlay. Thanks
I know this is a very old post, but would you recommend dropping the strands in the same manner @nickswhipshop? Or would you recommend pulling them over to the middle and plaiting over them like your newer videos?
I've been trying to make a whip with a wooden handle and I was trying to use your videos as a reference but what ive been doing is trying to turn a bull whip in to a cow whip by accident lmao but I didnt know that at the time till I found Rhett Kelley which showed me a true cow whip lol so ive been taking your tutorials the plaiting and pattern parts and his keeper whip start version and my ron edwards book and I made my own whip it cracks loud and has no kinks but its not stiff enough its stiff at the beginning but the ending is floppy kind of lol but I still love your videos even if its not the kind whip I like but its working for me thanks!! (:
I’m about a quarter into making the overlay using your old tutorial then I click of the video then see this 😂 lol it would be cool if you could make a video of you making the whip I ordered from you it is the 3ft snake whip. -Braden Stackhouse
Hi Nick! Not sure if this has already been asked/answered elsewhere, but I’m wondering which strand lengths you use for the overlay strands for each color? You’ve got 8 different strands and I figured the shortest two were the same color (black), then the next shortest two were the second color (brown/red). Can you confirm for the overlay strands which measurements went with which color? Thanks!
how do you prevent cutting the sealed end of the core and having the BBs come out when you are cutting the end to make the heel knot. thank you, great videos.
I tie a knot in the end, around 1 inch off the end. Then I load the core from the bottom up. This allows me to really compact the bbs in the strand when I seal it off with the sinew stopper.
Thank you for your video. I'm about to make my own snake whip. So, I have a question, can you help me? For waxing the whip, bee wax or parafin wax can be use? Those two are only types of wax availble at my place.
Fun build but I came up short on the overlay both times I built it. Ends up rather chunky when finished at 2.5 feet but still does overhead and backhanded side flicks well enough. I can just barely get a coachman's out of it some of the time.
Hey nick, I really want to make this but the measurements at the beginning of the video confuse me since you put in after all measurements and 4 inches seems to small for one strand
Just started and was looking at both videos and curious why such a change in amount of core that is loaded with bbs? This on is 12" and the previous would have more than double that.
May I ask who you get your sinue from as the UK stuff I have got is waxed but not that well and also splits in to individual fibers when I try wrapping the whip also what width hockey tape do you use Cheers for the vidos they are helping my interest in whips and how to make them
Hi thanks for your videos. Currently making my first whip, starting with this snake whip which is going well thanks to your videos. Have you thought about using an electric fabric stapler, would fire in really easily and would half your time.
Nick, im replicating this build for my first whip, can you please, please indicate the lengths of your strands for each belly. Or direct me on how to determine proper lengths for strands. Thank you, Jeremy G.
Hey Nick, Great Vid... As always. Live the Update! Just curious though... Have you ever used-or considered using-the Tapered Twist Style with a Snake Whip? I did, just to see and I gotta say; I'm really diggin' how it Cracks! Anyways, hopefully I'll get a chance to make the LA Whip Meet... You're an Excellent Teacher and Whipmaker, keep up the Great Work! -Zodiac
if you get a new hot glue gun, i believe you can get a sponge type thing to keep the tip clean (if you wipe it immediately after use which helps it apply clean, but i may be full of myself so i'm not saying doing it i'm saying looking into it may be beneficial. also i wanted to ask what would happen if you cut the sinew after going down and instead of going back up went down again but in the other direction? Don't worry my question comes from curiosity not from me thinking of doing it myself.
Really nice content Sir. I am starting to think that I try to make one for myself. Is there a place where I can find a list of supplies and where you get them from?
Question, you say you like to do 1/3 the length of bbs for your core, so on a 3ft whip the core has 1ft of bb's. So if I want to make a 6ft snake whip, would I have 2ft worth of bb's as the core? And then use the lengths from your website for a 6ft bull whip as a general guide for the stand lengths? (I've already made a 3ft snake whip with this tutorial and love it btw)
So, my 1st belly plaiting is running short. Taking into account what was mentioned about the inch / foot error in comments I adjusted my para cord length accordingly: 2 @ 5.5’ (5’-6”) 1 @ 4’ 1 @ 2.5’ (5’-6”) The shortest strand (2.5’) is only 1’-3” when halved at the knot (2.5’•.5=1.25’) and that’s the one that runs short first. Appreciate any and all suggestions
My solution to the getting BBs into 550 paracord problem - buy some crappy Chinese paracord! It's much looser and when you've gutted it, it takes standard 4.5mm BBs no problem. Use it just for the loaded strands in the core, then use good quality paracord for the overlays. Works for me ;-)
It's possible to make. And essentially you would use the lengths from the 8 foot bull whip. But extend the core another few inches. Otherwise it's basically the same.
Am trying my hand at a snakewhip. My 4.5mm bbs are very hard to work into the core of the gutted 650 black paracord purchased from Paracord Planet. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Nick is there a difference in artificial sinew? You seem to always use black sinew, I have a more natural looking sinew and doesnt seem to hold as well. Is it possible that I'm just not tightening it down enough?
So I’m following this video to a T and have exactly 1 foot of B.B. loaded paracord as the core plus the 2 feet and 1 extra inch for error. However when it comes to the first belly, the first strand is dropping short of the end of the B.B. loaded core. Is there a reason for this? Should I keep plating? Should I make the 2 1/2 foot piece bigger?
Hi Nick, I just finished my first pocket whip (which is also my first whip) but when I finished, something truly catastrophic happened 😧: THE POCKET WHIP DIDN’T FIT IT MY POCKET!! WHY DID THIS EVER HAVE?!! lolol. 😉 PS: It was a joke. Speaking of jokes, figure out which one of your whips has the biggest sense of humor and read this comment to it and what will it do? It’ll crack up. Get it?
KingCuddles314 could you please describe the lengths because he puts in after all lengths but that would be too short for example for the fist belly he puts 1x4in but does he mean 1 strand 4 feet long
Dillon Doan yes all measurements are in feet. So the first belly is 2x5.5ft 1x4 ft 1x2.5ft. Just replace in with ft. He states this in the pinned comment
Strand lengths are in feet everyone, NOT inches. My embarrassing mistake. 4 hours of sleep a night must be catching up with me!

That’s quite a little snapper. It’s pretty awesome how they are made, I could watch this all day.
I’ve found that a Gerber dime multi tool has the perfect spacing in the hole of the pliers that it will grab a hold of the BB but allow it to slide through the paracord fairly easily. It saves a lot of time and your fingers as well.

Hey nick, I really want to make this but the measurements at the beginning of the video confuse me since you put in after all measurements and 4 inches seems to small for one strand
For putting bb's into the core: an old fork works wonders as a means to make the bb's go down. *Whistles*
Great Tutorial 😍😍👍. Just made my first one 🤙
Great Martin!
Just started and was looking at both videos and curious why such a change in amount of core that is loaded with bbs? This on is 12" and the previous would have more than double that.
May I ask who you get your sinue from as the UK stuff I have got is waxed but not that well and also splits in to individual fibers when I try wrapping the whip also what width hockey tape do you use
Cheers for the vidos they are helping my interest in whips and how to make them
Hi thanks for your videos. Currently making my first whip, starting with this snake whip which is going well thanks to your videos. Have you thought about using an electric fabric stapler, would fire in really easily and would half your time.
Thanks Henry! I've not tried that, but it sounds like a great idea.
Nick, im replicating this build for my first whip, can you please, please indicate the lengths of your strands for each belly. Or direct me on how to determine proper lengths for strands. Thank you, Jeremy G.
Great updated video nick!
I was wondering if I could use those little tee candles to wax the whips? Or should I not?. Your videos are amazing.
"happy birthday to me" haha nice
Would it be a good idea to buy two 100 foot length 550 paracord if I want to make this
Another great place is theparacordstore.com.

Nice video really instructional 😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍👍
If I want to use this tutorial for a 6ft snake whip, could I just double the listed measurements, or is there a more complex calculation?
What are the differences in construction between a bullwhip, a snake whip, and a stock whip? Thank you for your answer.
Did you take all the cores out of the paracord for every piece? I assume you did for the core with BBs, but what about the others?
Thanks
Hey Nick can you make a tutorial for 16 plait bullwhip conversions for different lengths of whips? Thanks
if you get a new hot glue gun, i believe you can get a sponge type thing to keep the tip clean (if you wipe it immediately after use which helps it apply clean, but i may be full of myself so i'm not saying doing it i'm saying looking into it may be beneficial. also i wanted to ask what would happen if you cut the sinew after going down and instead of going back up went down again but in the other direction? Don't worry my question comes from curiosity not from me thinking of doing it myself.
just a question: do I need all coreless paracord or with core for the mentioned lengths at the beginning?
Hi, you will want the core to be removed for everything. You can purchase coreless paracord, or you can buy normal paracord and remove the core.
Beautiful whip! I am sorry if I missed this in a previous comment, but can you list the materials (brands also, if possible) you use to make this?
Taking into account what was mentioned about the inch / foot error in comments I adjusted my para cord length accordingly:
2 @ 5.5’ (5’-6”)
1 @ 4’
1 @ 2.5’ (5’-6”)
The shortest strand (2.5’) is only 1’-3” when halved at the knot (2.5’•.5=1.25’) and that’s the one that runs short first. Appreciate any and all suggestions
At 9:29 for a brief moment you can see that the bbs don't go the full 12 inches, it's around 9.5 inches so it's 2.5 inches shorter than he tells us
What's funny is on each video on you built a whip you always repeat nice and tight 😂😂
SunShine (thats what she said) lol
As usual perfect video....thx
My solution to the getting BBs into 550 paracord problem - buy some crappy Chinese paracord! It's much looser and when you've gutted it, it takes standard 4.5mm BBs no problem. Use it just for the loaded strands in the core, then use good quality paracord for the overlays. Works for me ;-)
Hey quick ? Do you still use etape on your snake whips when covering core? Or what’s your current method?
Would love to see a tutorial for an 8 foot snake whip. (IF POSSIBLE TO MAKE)
It's possible to make.
Thanks!
If I want to make a 6' snake whip, would I just double all these measurements or is there more to it?
Nick is there a difference in artificial sinew? You seem to always use black sinew, I have a more natural looking sinew and doesnt seem to hold as well. Is it possible that I'm just not tightening it down enough?
So I’m following this video to a T and have exactly 1 foot of B.B. loaded paracord as the core plus the 2 feet and 1 extra inch for error. However when it comes to the first belly, the first strand is dropping short of the end of the B.B. loaded core. Is there a reason for this? Should I keep plating? Should I make the 2 1/2 foot piece bigger?
That’s the same prob I’m having. The strands only 15” long after a knot is tied. Hardly seems long enough to cover a 12” core of BBs.
I also ran into that problem, i think the lengths are half of the strand. So the 2'6" is from the knot to the end... maybe?
@@allenkincheloe2591 i've also ran into this problem with my snake whip and following other suggested strand lengths
Hi Nick, I just finished my first pocket whip (which is also my first whip) but when I finished, something truly catastrophic happened 😧:
THE POCKET WHIP DIDN’T FIT IT MY POCKET!! WHY DID THIS EVER HAVE?!!
lolol. 😉
PS: It was a joke.
I need a new lacing needle for my falls. My current lacing needle is tapered and the front is too thick to fit into the paracord.
Where do I find the length of the cords?
