I just want to say that I don’t think anybody will ever see this good Of videography on UA-cam anywhere else nickswhipshop Your videos are truly a work of art so are your whips
I'm watching you plait the handle and getting butterflies in my stomach. Lol...waiting on my hockey tape to get here so I can attempt this. Thanks Nick for all your videos.
@@NicksWhipShop Nick, do you remember how long the 6 strands for the handle are? I didn't see in the video where you mentioned this. I did see in your PH whip video where you said each of those 8 strands were about 4 times the length of handle you want to plait. I'll probably use the 4 times method and hope it works. Except for the handle plaiting, I've been finished with this whip for about 2 months. That handle plaiting is pretty intimidating but I am ready to give it a try. LOL.
Awesome!! Thanks Nick! Regarding indexing/labelling visible strands: When I cut strands for several whips at once, I use a sewing needle to pull a piece of thin, colorful string through the point i want to mark. It stays in place well enough and I can just pull it out later when working on the whips without leaving a visible mark.
Nick, this is the third whip I've made. I finished this week and it turned out great. My first whip was Adam Winrich's single belly that you shared in another video. I really do enjoy your tutorial videos and enjoy making whips. Many thanks to you and Adam Winrich!
Hey ted , gladded to hear the whip went alright :) , just wondering at the start of the video he said that you need 160 ft of para cord . Did he mean 160 ft of paracord in both colours or just 80 ft per colour thx
Hi Ted, At about 26:00 Nick says his longest strand is 27" but there's others that are longer and he cuts them all to 27". why did he spend all that time at the beginning staggering them just to cut them all off?
thats what im thinking every video he is just so quiet and relaxing. its a little irritating because whips are badass not soft relaxing topics so everything quiet but i want loud ass sonic booms. its very weird.
A simple trick for keeping the strands of a flat braid in the right order when youre not holding them is to use the plastic clips you can buy for re-sealing bread bags. Great tutorial!
Today is when I start on this stock whip design. Until now I’ve sold most of my whips, so I don’t have a good quality whip of my own. This stock whip is going to be mine and mine only. ;) Thank you Nick, again, for your amazing work and videos
Your the vids are highly detailed and very informational. I have a comment about making your own stock whip. Actually more of a request. Is there a way you could show how to start the plaiting with different color strands? the reason I ask is I am highly dyslexic and it is hard for me to keep track. I think with different colored strands it would help me a lot if you could just show me how to begin and then I can get started and understand it better. thank you very much for all your highly informational videos and detailed explanations please keep the good work coming. Thank you very much
Love this video Nick. I’m making a set of these! I really love the flat keeper to round belly part. I’ve always struggled and never been able to make it look right. I had pretty much given up making anything that needed to go flat to round. I finally did it with your video! Thank you so much!
Damn, my hands haven't recovered yet from the last whip, I'm gonna have to wait a few more days before I build me one (or two) of these!!! Thanks Capt Nick, you are a true inspiration!!!
Haha, I burst out laughing when you did the whole winnebago man skit at the end. Wonderful video, Nick. You are so generous with your knowledge and clearly put a lot of passion into your whips and videos.
Hi I made my first whip off of this video 3years ago and still use it to day I made another! This is a GREAT video thank you so much. I have a question what is it that you melt your wax in? I didn't wax my first whip but I want to wax this one.
Nick quick question. I have made a few whips using your directions and they came out great, thanks. When they are finished they look shiny and the colors really stand out. Then I put them in the melted wax. Colors look drab and lifeless. The whip cracks like hell, much better after the wax, but. the whip doesn't look the same. Is there any way to bring the luster back after waxing.
I know it’s not my question to answer and this was a while ago, but I’ve experimented with rubbing the round corner of a short piece of 2 by 4 back and forth all around the handle and thong, and it creates a weathered look, and restores the color for the most part. You can also use a pencil, or a smooth object to do this.
i started this build but then it ended up turning into a performance hybrid, turned out great for my first real finished whip. it didnt quite turn out the way i planned but it still gives out a real bang thanks buddy nick
you mentioned that you would provide a link in the description to how you tied the 5x4 Turks head knot. Do you have an in-depth tutorial on how to tie this knot?
Yeah, I’ve always plaited by holding the core, I only make leather whips, I find it’s the only way I can get speed, but that’s the way I was taught, whatever works for the individual I suppose. I find that when it comes time to fray the ends for the keeper, it's much easier to insert a lacing needle or a small screwdriver into the cord being frayed.
@@NicksWhipShop Huh. I didn't think that would be an issue. I figured the thread would just melt to the keeper at that edge, and it wouldn't impact the tightness of the binding. Now, let me see. Should I trust the guy who has years and years of experience making dozens, if not hundreds, of whips? Or should I trust myself, who has made exactly one bullwhip following the expert's tutorial video? That's a head scratcher, for sure. :)

Doesn’t need to be shot loaded, the leverage from the stock essentially does that same thing as shot loading a bull whip. It’s why snake whips need heavy shot loading as the handle provides zero leverage to the thong.

Asking as a complete beginner to whip making, if I wanted to increase the length of this to 7ft, how long do my initial strands need to be? Are there any other measurements I should be concerned about?
Thanks for this tutorial Nick. I will try to build my first whip. But one question about the size of the nylon thread. The thread "the artist #5" can not be found here in France. What should be the diameter of the thread to use. Thanks
I really want to start this project!! But I live in a small basement apartment with no workshop. I have a folding table I can use for things like measuring and cutting... I use it when I am making clothes and leather stuff. But this is time-consuming work, and additionally it is impractical for me to keep a vise/clamp attached to either my desk or my folding table. I can 100% screw in a sturdy hook (like a bicycle hook) to my desk which would let me work on plaiting while I have some cheesy show or movie going on and keep my adhd brain satisfied. I saw at the beginning you used the vise to hold the strands in line with each other. Does it need to be SUPER solidly held in place? Try wrapping with your string on top, you'll be wrapping in reverse but it put the string on top so you get a better wrap easier. It's how I learned from an aussie 30 years ago
Nick, do you remember how long the 6 strands for the handle are? I didn't see in the video where you mentioned this. Question: I know you said you're relying on the wax to tighten the strands, but why not go ahead and pull the strands tightly? I'm just curious, I'm sure you're using the correct method I just don't understand it. Great job it looks beautiful! I've been waiting on this tutorial for awhile. Keep it up!
Because stockwhips are light as a rule. Making everything super tight makes the thong very stiff, very stubborn. Makes it extremely hard to handle fluently.

@@bobbyb7127 sounds like buying already gutted is the ticket.
Thank you for putting out this video I have been waiting for someone to do it
Welcome Sean, thanks for watching!
Try wrapping with your string on top, you'll be wrapping in reverse but it put the string on top so you get a better wrap easier. It's how I learned from an aussie 30 years ago
When plaiting the keeper and the belly, how wide are they supposed to be.
"How unfortunate" so funny!
I love this, thanks so much sir.
please it looks encredible
Nick, do you remember how long the 6 strands for the handle are? I didn't see in the video where you mentioned this. LOL.
Question: I know you said you're relying on the wax to tighten the strands, but why not go ahead and pull the strands tightly? I'm just curious, I'm sure you're using the correct method I just don't understand it. Great job it looks beautiful! I've been waiting on this tutorial for awhile. Keep it up!
It allows you to plait faster and with less stress on the arms and hands.
Because stockwhips are light as a rule. Making everything super tight makes the thong very stiff, very stubborn. Makes it extremely hard to handle fluently.
