I was really surprised with this link bc how she was presented at first and how she ended up. and it's unique that you have to turn her down in order to actually date her lol
She is my favorite social link in P4, and she gets a lot of shit, but Ai is an excellent character. Everything you've mentioned here is exacerbated by the fact that she lives in a small town in Japan, which is a country obsessed with brand names and appearance equaling self-worth (particularly for women). I was looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint!!

Having had a non zero amount of relationships like the one with Ai, I empathize with her a lot as a character. She’s navigating through heavy social expectations and I love how that’s expressed through the mechanical friction in the route.
"From now on, people like you will be my mirror" brought the tears on before I noticed they were even happening.
Hands down my favourite character in the persona series, I love how real she is, in the way that people often do or say bad things but that doesn't mean they are bad people.
A lot games/animes try to sell you this amazing, almost perfect waifu that has a few problems and it's a little insecure, but is practically flawless and deeply in love with you cause you're the protagonist, you bought the game so you get the girl.
But in Ai's case they present you with a real human being, with flaws, traumas, insecurities, fears, but most importantly: a person worth trying, deep down in Ai's character.
Also, great video and analysis.
Pursuing beauty, wealth and admiration, when all you really want is happiness. I think it's a story that has not been told enough.
There's a lot of links of Persona 4 that I feel like I could never truly appreciate when I was younger, and I think that's been helped massively by watching your analyses making me want to revisit the game again. But Ai's... Ai's hits a bit *too* close to home for me in a very spooky way. That entire rundown at 12:10 was so close to home that I immediately felt tense and on edge - and while I myself am in a better place at least than where Ai is in this moment, it's a scary feeling to revisit and relive through a very unassuming link at first glance. I was a lot younger when I experienced Persona 4 the first time and didn't fully grasp what my own self was like at that point, but I think this link will be a very bittersweet one to revisit in full. I have a much greater appreciation for it now. Thank you for breaking this down. Looking forward to more
AI is my favourite of mine for being a character that you need to be nice at first but haft to turn her down when she offers to be boyfriend and girlfriend but she finds who she is and broken the illusion of the Moon.
I actually hooked up with Ai Ebihara in my P4G run, and she’s actually a very precious girlfriend. She tries her hardest, and it’s so endearing.
Probably in my top 5 social links in p4 never really understood why she was hated. Anyways amazing video like always 😀
Based on a few other comments, I think people dislike her from her anime stuff, like the chie slap fight n all. Ofc all of that doesn't happen in p4g and isn't even written by the same people. Idk I like her as well, never got the controversy
The way she's initially presented is probably offputting too (and for my first playthrough I forgot she existed), but I think if you get past the first few ranks she's actually a pretty good character.

Ai has the honor of being the confidant I cried the most, not because she's my favourite waifu/character, I just saw myself in her. I only saw her in the anime so was one of the very few things I wasn't spoiled, and oh boy did rank 6 just hit like a truck. As long as I remember I've been fat, not something exagerated but type 1 obesity nonetheless, and I was almost the only one in my grade being fat. It just, kills your selfsteem slowly but surely, it's a clear defect of yours that can't be hidden and you're always reminded of, every time you look at the mirror, you sit in the toilet, you eat something delicious, it's a reminder that you're not "facing youself" and you gived up. And yes, I said defect, makes you slower and have less stamina in sports, it can long-term afect your health (indirectly), and aesthetically is commonly seen as something unpleasent (I'm not complaining, it's a fact). Right now I'm in the best shape I've ever been in my life and hoping to lower it even more (27 BMI). But then the dialogue "It's not like I have any other redeeming qualities" just punched me in the gut, it's like seeing all the insecurities that lie behind the weight and that I ignored, the fear that even after this jorney of almost a year now may be worthless, because deep down I can't love myself. I'm sorry if this is a bit too sad, I was just rambling about all the insecurities one dialogue unbottled in a matter of seconds

I relate to Ai in terms of well trying to be someone your to please other's .
Thinking that happiness can only come from validation from other's instead of yourself .
On one of my playthroughs of p4g I broke her social link .
It's refreshing having a social link that ties into gameplay with how choices you make can led to positive and negative outcomes .
Ai is that character that was a slow burn for me to like. I think what made me truly liked her oddly enough was the valentine's day event you can get with her. It's my opinion, but not only do I think it's one of the best ones for you to see out of all the ones you can give chocolates too, but her giving you chocolates, and where they came from was so cute to me. They where her favorites, that her dad would give her, and AHHHH! The story is so good!~
I feel that whole event shows the layers of how good of a character she was, and made me see what the writers did for her. looking back once I did that. Was it a while for me to understand that? Yes, but once I did I appreciated her a lot more.
I loved Ai from the get go. I just can’t really pinpoint what makes her resonate with me. I don’t personally relate to her story as much as I do other social links. Maybe I just like how well-written she is.
One part of my experience with her is through this one fan artist who made shadows for all of the P4 cast and personas for almost all of them. The artistic choices for Ai has always stuck with me, first depicting her as a large monster performing the birth of Venus pose then transforming into a fancy burlesque-style persona, stripping off the monster’s fur to find true joy underneath. This doesn’t relate to the game in and of itself, but the image of her fan-shadow/persona will never leave my mind when I come across her social link.
I know it's been a year, but do you have a link to the artist? That drawing series sounds really interesting.

I personally don't even find AI to be a very physically attractive girl, which makes the whole "superficially attractive girl" stereotype she seems to fall under initially feel a little flat to me. But I still really appreciate this link for it's writing and love the writing behind her as a character.
Edit: Also noticing she was voiced by Wendee Lee didn't even happen for me until watching The Animation where she did the "You're late! Penalty!" line because that sounds exactly like something Wendee Lee's most well known role of Haruhi Suzumiya would say.
Ai is one of my favorite social links from p4. I was kinda heartbroken to find so little love for only cuz I thought she was really great.
I've been watching these older P4 analysis videos for a few days now and I really like all of your analysis and symbolic readings, along with the nuance your analysis brings. Ai's one of my favorite links in P4 because of how coherently her struggles tie into her Arcana and how layered her admittidely prickly personality is, and you did a bang-up job putting all these into the limelight. Really nicely done!

My opinion of Ai easily did the biggest 180 out of all character in media, Toko from Danaganronpa being her only rival. At first I could not stand her, but as I got to know her more my opinion of her completely changed and I even felt a little bad for disliking her so much
I don't know why people say they hated her when she said she didn't want to date the guy. Like she didn't like him, why give him false hope? Yeah I can agree with that sentiment
She was excessively cruel. You can reject somebody without choosing to be cruel, which I think post social link Ai would do.
I found her a good social link, but an insufferable individual. Her whole, "People were shitty to me, so I use the fact I was bullied and made fun of so I improved myself, but rather than using my improvement I as a goal I used it to be an asshole to those around me." dynamic really rubbed me the wrong way.

I can't wait for when Rise's video come out. I know lots of people see her in kinda shallow way (a super popular idol who simp for you. which straight man doesn't have wet dream like that, right?), and I probably was one of them at one point.
But as I grow up, her social link resonate with me so much: I always analyze people's personality and interact with them in the way that please them. I almost never have conflict with people because of this. But in the end, it makes me struggle to find which one is my true self. "which version of me is the real me? am i the silent and wise person, the childish and foolish one, or the egoist and apathy?". I have lots of acquaintances and connections, but they're all hollow and kinda empty. I'm always sad when I think that maybe no one in this world truly see the real me, because even I don't know which one is me.

The title of the video hit way different than the others. I often think of that exact question. As someone that has been pretty much alone their whole life. Is it my destiny? I never really want to think that, sometimes it feels that way, but I never let that consume my thoughts for more than a couple hours.

I actually did her romance arc in one of my play throughs and it was actually pretty sweet. She has a softer side to her but is still a bit of a brat which I found charming.
Haven't finished my first PS2 P4 playthrough, but once I do I'll spend a LONG time in the videos covering the main characters and places

I’m gonna be honest I use to be Ai but I grew up learned some tough lessons and now she’s my favorite p4 girl
I've always gone the date her and break up but I've never had the link reverse or break
I love her social link though; the ending when she gives the compact to you, I love that part
I'm now realising I'm pretty much Ai, but with less effort to try and whip myself into an attractive shape... fuck. It really hurts, being rejected all of the time. You can't help it, even if when I am somewhat conventionally pretty, I'm not good enough for even a single person out there. Are some people just doomed to be alone for no particular reason? I really don't know. But it sucks.
Every Human suffers and struggles with something. Treat yourself like you would treat your best friend, because you would look after your friend and make sure they're on the right path, even if you have to kick their arse a bit. That is what friends are for.
People definitely aren’t “doomed” to be alone!!! If it’s an option for you, I would really recommend going to therapy to help you figure out your issues, but in general it will help a lot to be happy with yourself before you get into a relationship. Unfortunately, a lot of the time when you get into relationships without being happy with and loving yourself, it can put you in a situation where you’re vulnerable to being taken advantage of, and more likely to stay in an abusive relationship, and I’m saying this from experience too. Good luck in life, you got this!!!!!!!! :)

Honestly, I never knew Ai existed until I watched the Anime series (I guess I was more focused on Chie too much) and thought her character was one of the b*tch types who only wants what they like. Seeing her character history now, I do feel her pain. Probably one of the underrated girls in P4.
Though, I do hope her getting together with Kou is canon since she does have a crush on him and it was also shown in the Anime.
Ai has a crush on whichever strength confidant you have, so it's Daisuke if you choose him and it's Kou if you pick him. The anime is not Canon.

I hated her at first and the anime only worsened my perception of her character for how she acts towards Yu (seriously, if their genders were exchanged everybody would be complaining). However I changed my opinion after complete her social link and now she´s one of my favourite SLs. She got a lot of character development and changed for good. Ai, who only cares for the looks is slapped and gets her face swollen to protect Yu. That is where I realized how much she changed.
I didn't care for her when I was first introduced to her in the anime, but after playing the game recently, she really won me over. I'm currently in the same place. I'm working on bettering myself because I used to get picked on for being fat and looking poor, but sometimes it feels like i get so wrapped up in self improvement that i don't ever take the time to appreciate who I really am.
You forgot to mention she gets one of the best fight scenes in the anime adaption of Persona 4.
This is a series analyzing her character in persona 4/ Persona 4 Golden - the anime is a separate canon at most, and not Canon by the least so I didn't mention it.
Ai is one of my favourite persona characters hands down.

Now I regret having neglect her. When I played the game it was my first Persona game, and I didn't much meta-gaming then really. So when I pissed her off in one of the early events, I never talked to her again, mainly because I was finding other characters more entertaining, so I left her there. I missed an actually good story.
I find interesting how her design doesn't match how she present herself. her design is on the basic side.
