  • This video is an ultimate analysis of the persona 4 golden story. P4g has a ton of mythology and references to japanese history. It also has a very underrated narrative which I delve into completely. This is one of my favorite things about P4 and the new additions in Golden. I hope you find Persona 4 as cool as I do by the end.

Namatame as the hare of Inaba is a connection I would never have made and it's for reasons like this that I love this series. Seriously, these might be the best Persona 4 videos on UA-cam

I had also not seen a single p4 video mention the hare of inaba connections despite them seemingly being pretty well understood by Japanese audiences. Even is supposed "ultimate analysis" most of this stuff doesn't even get a throw away line and I find this stuff some of the most interesting. I'm glad you appreciate it too haha

Marie may not be my favorite character to romance, but there's a real poetry about her and Narukami getting together. The thought that after all the millenia that have passed since they parted, their reincarnated selves have a chance to find happiness... That's poetry.

  • @christopherbravo1813

there's one detail of the original myth you didn't mention that I feel would have made your analysis that much more compelling.
in the original myth, when he saw Izanami's rotten and decaying form, Izanagi was so horrified and disgusted that he ran away immediately.
THAT was why Izanami started trying to attack him-not simply because he looked, but because upon seeing her-seeing the Truth-he chose to reject her and flee from the truth he had sought.
With that in mind, one could view the final battle with Izanami as Izanagi choosing to face the truth of what Izanami had become once more, and instead of running away, face that very truth head-on.
heck, in Golden, one might even point out that in confronting this harsh reality, Izanagi's original goal was achieved. Izanami is alive again, fully restored to her original state, and for the briefest of moments the two were reunited at long last.
edit- not sure if this was intentional but Marie striking the boys with lightning-including the protagonist-might also be a callback to the part of the myth where Izanagi saw Izanami's corpselike state.

For me, Izanami is one of the Best Bosses in Persona.
I honestly don't understand why there are Most People find Izanami as the Worst due to how she "popped out of Nowhere" when in Fact the Story itself should've made the Player wonder how the Investigation Team & Antagonists attained the Power of entering the TV World & especially of attaining the Power of summoning Personas.

People who say she "popped out of nowhere" are the same people who think the plot of P4 is an aimless Slice of Life until heaven, and they almost always intersect with a secondary group of people who push their jingoism and western expectations on cultural things they haven't taken time to understand. This game is very japanese, it's set in rural Japan, made by Japanese developers, and about specifically Japanese folks stories, mythology and history- ofc if someone has no idea about those things a lot will go over their heads. Instead of self-reflection though they start nitpicking reasons to mask their lack of enjoyment and lack of perspective instead of seeing those 2 things are related.

      Agreed.
But in case of encountering those "Persona Fans", I was mostly exposed to them in Facebook & then some in Twitter.
this said, it's kind of upon our Experience when encountering said "Fans".
In some extent, I do understand their Perspective but at the same Time when it came to them sharing said "Experience" with P4, it is those kind of "Criticisms" that are Misinformative & Misleading

I definitely never thought it was an aimless Slice of Life (and even if it was seen as that, I wouldn't care because it's still third in my Top 3 game of all time with P3 in second and P5 in first), but I DID think she came out of nowhere before watching this video (Seriously. Awesome job). I just posted my thoughts in my own comment. Long story short, I think it's really great now and my opinion of her is way better, but I also feel like it's a bit too subtle for my liking and personally could've used a bit more clues to connect me to this narrative without having to go into in-depth research on my own. If there are more clear clues, I'll look into them when I eventually play the game again.

Since playing Strange Journey Redux, I'd found it odd the Hare of Inaba wasn't present as a Persona in Persona4, since ATLUS had the demon design already, but pointing out the lore already has the Hare through Namatame, that's actually really clever.
Amazing video, another great segment in this series. You've created something wonderful out of an already amazing game

I would say "Maybe it was Namatame's persona?" since we know for a fact Namatame has to have one, but since both Yu and Adachi had Izanagi, I'd like to imagine that Namatame had his own special version. Yu had Izanagi-no-Okami representing his journey to the World arcana, and Adachi had Magatsu Izanagi, so I would like to imagine Namatame had a version, too. Perhaps something like Yomotsu Izanagi?

@@greenstat1c i named Namatame’s theoretical Izanagi Zetsubo-Izanagi. According to google translate, “Zetsubo“ means despair or desperation. This is not only Namatame’s main driving force behind throwing people into the tv, but also what he’s meant to represent in Izanami’s “game“.

The whole thing was a controlled environment where izanami picked 3 perfectly fitting archetypal people as a test of humanity. Full Disclaimer: This is a description of how I felt about P4's God Villain plot line before watching this eye-opening analysis. My stance has softened A LOT after watching this.
When it came to Izanami when I played vanilla, the only clue I had was that one handshake. By the time the investigation got started, I had completely brushed off the whole thing because I was focused on solving the mystery right in front of me. I never even noticed that she would be standing outside the gas station on rainy days. The game rewards you for getting everything with the True Ending, but at the same time, it doesn't really punish you for not getting it either. From what I looked up with the good ending, the game doesn't outright tell you that you missed her, so something bad is going to happen again. The only reason I find out about Izanami was because I was following a guide to get everything. Without it, I would've passed right by her, thinking I was done. So after playing vanilla, I ended up thinking Izanami just wasn't worth the time.
Then Golden gives us Marie and well... she was P4's Tartarus/Mementos for me. By that, I mean she became the link to lead me to Izanami and make me think she's worth it. The existence of Tartarus/Mementos served as a red flag that the stories were far from over. Sure, I had defeated the 12 Shadows and beat Shido, but I knew I wasn't done because I still needed to find out what was waiting for me at the end of those labyrinths. It was an unsolved mystery that I was reminded of often. That's what Marie's arc was to me. Even after I beat Ameno, I wondered if I was really done because she still didn't get her memories. Then we get her dungeon and it drops hints about Izanami's existence. That's when I felt inclined to look for her. But even then, I still didn't care for her much as a villain.
Having said all that... HO-LY SHIT! Did this analysis make me have a change of heart! The fact that this whole thing was being played out like a Japanese folktale makes everything just CLICK! This plot totally feels like the HEAVIEST in symbolism out of the the 3 games to me now and I LOVE it! Now, I don't feel like Izanami was unnecessary and I am SO glad she is here!
I just... wish it didn't feel as subtle as it did for me. The fact that I needed to do some in-depth research into some stuff on my own to piece this all together holds it back for me. I wish there were more clues brought up in the main story to better connect me to all of this and not make me feel like Izanami just popped out of nowhere when she really didn't. I know what the intention was now, but... I personally could've used a bit more help. But that's how I personally feel. I'm definitely not saying I'm right for feeling this way, but I hope people who read this at least understand where I'm coming from and why I feel the way I do. If I missed something, feel free to enlighten me (In a CIVIL way, of course. Please don't make me feel like a complete idiot). It's been a while since I played this game and I'm aiming to give it another playthrough with it being ported over to more consoles soon, so I can keep on the lookout for anything you bring up.
With all that said, thank you so much for this awesome video, Hiding. It really showed me a lot of things I didn't even consider. The God Villain aspect of this game is still my least favorite compared to the others, but please don't misunderstand. Now, I REALLY like it.

I understand perfectly. and I do agree from a purely gameplay and story-based perspective, Izanami is probably one of the weakest "god" antagonists in the series. However, the symbolism and mythological significance around her and how she ties into the overall themes of the game give her a sort of depth that most other "god" villains do not have.

Best final boss of persona so far. Yaldabaoth was a false god and classical villain, Nyx comes close but doesn’t really act so much as a person but more as a concept or force of nature, but Izanami is a very classical god, one of the first who was crucial to the development of Japan.

With the story of Izanagi lighting a comb to see Izanami, I can’t help but draw a possible comparison to the the flaming tarot cards the party members shatter to summon their persona. We know that shattering them is breaking free from fate, but why are the cards on fire? Couldn’t help but think that could be the reference to how Izanagi saw Izanami for what she truly was: a dead corpse.

I think it's important to understand the context for when persona 4 came out too. It was a different cultural moment for translations and fan communities. That paired with P4's subject matter being something so entrenched in japanese cultural mythos meant that many well understood aspects of the plot and story to a Japanese audience would be completely unrecognized by foreign markets. This isn't the game's fault ofc, it's a Japanese game made for a Japanese audience, and the story is still perfectly functional w/o this info, but it is lacking much of the context for how the narrative is meant to function. I think this caused a lot of people in the west over the years to misconstrue or harshly judge aspects of the game that at their root came from ignorance of the culture itself. Glad I am able to explore some of those ideas and that it's changing your perspective. It's some of my favorite stuff in P4, and how it changes everything, like you're putting on prescription glasses kinda

You know, with how much the games kind of delve into Jungian psychology, I'm kind of surprised that they haven't essentially had foils or something, in the form of certain work by neurologists, that in one way or another share some part of Carl Jung's work, almost like the friction between branches of Christanity, in a sense.
I mean, it certainly would be interesting how Persona would essentially represent the work of Sigmund Freud, with the whole Id, Ego and Super ego, for example.

I can't imagine the amount of research necessary to make such a video. I would rate these among the best videos on Persona 4. The research and interpretations are extremely interesting to listen to.
It'll be kinda sad when/if you eventually move onto other Persona games because I find P4 the most interesting, and by far the most fleshed out character wise. And Mythology is very fascinating. SEES Personas are based on people, Phantom Thieves Persona are based on theives. But The Investigation Team Personas being based on Gods are much more interesting to me personally.

... Is nobody going to talk about how, patriarchal the end of Isanagi's trail into Yomi? I know the message of P4 is to find the truth and that's cool AF, having a man (the father of Japan) go against the words of his partner, a woman (the mother of Japan).
That's patriarchal. The word of the woman, the lie. That's pretty fucked. That and the butchering of Kanji's sexuality and Shirogane's gender identity make this game a little bit wuh-oh.

    • @HidinginPrivate
      @HidinginPrivate  2 роки тому +6

This feels like bait, and I hope it is bait. in short- no. Having a female character be the bad guy in a story is not automatically some patriarchal message. We don't consider the countless games with male gods being bad guys to be matriarchal do we? Ofcourse not, that's ridiculous, so we don't "mention that" because it's not a thing in the story. It's just an incredibly bad faith reading of the story that is really racist since it's essentially taking a nonexistant understanding of another group of people's culture, not taking time to understand it, then telling those people it's wrong. That's disgusting.
Also Kanji and Shirogane are handled fine, I have a 50+ minute segment, and 1hr+ long segment coming out on them eventually, but I'll be honest I'm not sure if I would even want you to see them.

    • @harrietr.5073

@@HidinginPrivate Bait? I'm not fluent with systemic issues of patriarchy in Japan. But I know patriarchy is a thing in Japan, like im Europe or China, and there's patriarchs who'll look at these stories of men defeating evil women and tell themselves that's what they're doing or that it's fine to be misogynistic from those stories.
I'm worried about how patriarchal men will loom into the story, just because a male God is an antagonist or villain doesn't mean the story was written with or intentionally had a Feminist lean to it. Dude. That was a strawman. That's not logical. Yawhew in Satanic or pro-Lilith texts can be read as antipatriarchal.
And can I see the whole "Kanji's and Shirogane's arc is good actually" arguments? Because there's already been a gay man who read into Kanji and Shirogane.
And it ain't a good look. It's a video called "Persona 4 needs more gay."
Your comment is more reactionary than anything else. I'm not here to destroy the game. I don't know if it's a close favourite of yours from back then, I'm just critical. The fact you used a strawman argument is a bas sign already. It ain't logcial, that's not how someone discusses their antithesis, vsomeone worth their salt anyway.
We can talk about this without hiding behind logical fallacies as a shield.

I didn't use a strawman, but if we base our critical response on the possibility of bad faith actors interpreting the work wrongly, we are no longer being critical of the work itself but its meta. Your use of "reactionary" while being totally ignorant of the base culture and myth shows a narcissism in wanting to feel superior more than any genuine worry and concern too.
Was the person who delved into Kanji and Naoto also well versed in the culture differences and nuanced history of Japan and homosexuality either? Or was it entirely from a jingoistic modern western perspective? I talk about the history of homosexuality and representation going back to the edo period, through meiji to modern day in my (so far unreleased) Kanji segment.
I just don't like this come in aggressive and play innocent vibe. Feels like you're trying to gaslight me while being undereducated on the topic yourself.

    • @harrietr.5073

@@HidinginPrivate I'm not trying to be superior, I'm just thinking about that story in regards to patriarchal men, I don't know about Japan's society, I'm not claiming to know more in that regard dude. I'm not gaslighting you, you seemed to me to run to the defense of P4 to any critique. It's a little jarring to be hit by this, I don't know of the guy who looked into P4 is a master of sociology in Japan, but that he was trying to bring these representations of LGBT+ people in media. It says so in his UA-cam about section.
I'm not trying to be Jingoist, calm your horses. I'm looking at P4 from a Feminist and LGBT+ perspective, I'm not trying to encour your wrath!
You're just being reactionary because I didn't like a part of P4, calm it! I'm just a critical woman, alright? If I was Jingoist, that's my fault, but I don't think I did any Jingoist action, I'm worried about the interpretation of Isanagi and Izanami in P4 being "man good, woman bad".
I have feelings like that for other parts of Persona. I'm not trying to hurt people's feelings, I don't think I'd like P3 with being unable to control party members (and that offensive stereotype of transwoman in the babe hunt section).
I don't hate Persona. I have feelings about it, dude. I'm just a lady who looks at Kanji and reminisces about Jun in P2 compared to Kanji. I'm not here to destroy this game for you!
