  • These commercials aired on ABC on March 13th, 1987. Most of these were originally posted way back in Vol. 15 but here are all of the ads on the tape in better quality!
    1. McDonald's (I hope you're ready to be assaulted by a barrage of ads for breakfast sandwiches!)
    2. Keebler Tato Skins (These are still made by the original manufacturer and sold under the TGI Fridays brand)
    3. Promo for "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" (Made during a murky period for the band when Brian Wilson was still under the care of grifter "psychologist" Eugene Landy...still an enjoyable special that can be seen here: • Video )
    4. "Webster" End Credits
    5. KNTV 11 News Bumper
    6. "Mr. Belvedere" Will Not Be Seen Tonight... (But watch for it's return!)
    7. "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" Commercial Bumper (Brought to you by McDonald's and Bud Light)
    8. Bud Light (With Spuds Mackenzie)
    9. McDonald's
    10. "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" Commercial Bumper
    11. McDonald's
    12. Army
    13. Army
    14. L'oreal Studio Line
    15. Promo for "ABC's Wide World Of Sports"
    16. Volkswagen Golf GT
    17. "Top Gun" on VHS (This was actually one of the first VHS tapes that was "priced to own". The $26.95 price tag might seem steep, but it was cheap at the time)
    18. Avon
    19. "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" Commercial Bumper
    20. ABC News Business Brief
    21. Benylin
    22. ABC News Business Brief
    23. Ford Fever
    24. South Bay Health Center Dental Services
    25. KNTV 11 News Bumper
    26. McDonald's
    27. Michelob (Still one of my favorite ads that I've posted. The song is "To Live And Die In L.A." by Wang Chung, and the movie of the same title is also worth checking out)
    28. Volkswagen
    29. Comtrex
    30. "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" Commercial Bumper
    31. Promo for "We Are The Children"
    32. Slice
    33. Sunnyvale Ford
    34. KNTV 11 News Bumper (For those not in the know, the Winchester Mystery House is a San Jose landmark, built by Sarah Wincheser, the eccentric widow of the deceased riflemaker: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winches...)
    35. Bud Light
    36. McDonald's
    37. L'oreal Visuelle (With Andie MacDowell)
    38. Army
    39. Eagle Snacks Honey Roast Nuts
    40. Volkswagen GTI 16V
    41. Promo for "Cannonball Run II"
    42. "The Beach Boys: 25 Years Together" Commercial Bumper/End Credits (Brought to you by Volkswagen and McDonald's)

    Seeing Spuds Mackenzie reminds me of the Bloom County comic strip. There was a storyline where two of the characters, Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat, were running for President, but they were constantly being beaten in the polls by Spuds Mackenzie. Then Spuds political career faced turmoil when he was involved in a drunk driving incident, which caused him to also lose his job as the Bud Light spokesperson. His position for Bud Light was filled in by the Care Bears. God, I love that comic.

    Any other 80's kids here watching this channel ever have a moment like what I'm about to describe?: You'll watch some of the earlier 80's years videos and you may say "That looks very 80's" but you don't get a personal connection, but then you'll reach an upload from a year where memory starts to kick in, and suddenly it's "oh yeah, i remember this!". Well apparently i reached that point here with 1987. Super nostaligic. I haven't seen those Keebler Tater Skins commercials in years....

      @scottbaino I have early 80's memories (I was born in the late 70's) but they revolve around watching Saturday morning cartoons or weekday afternoon cartoons. On the other hand, memories of "just random commercials", like the type I'm seeing on this channel, those don't kick in until 1986 at the earliest (for me, anyway).

    Those McDonalds commercials had such a charm to them and managed to retain it after all these years.
    The Beach Boys show Promo and Ending remind me of the Full House episode where they performed a concert and DJ won tickets to see them.

    McDonald's really had great advertising back in the day that could appeal to a large range of audiences. They had the McDonaldland commercials for the kids, the family-oriented heartwarming ones, and the energetic ones. It did a great job of selling the product to a variety of consumers. It's funny how I didn't realize how great it was until I started watching commercial compilations like this channel.

      I was just about to remark on that. Everything from the health backlash to the clown hysteria has ruined their advertising. Now the restaurants have lost their distinctive looks, the company practically has no mascots, and the service is something to completely avoid.

      Also they're pretty much stuck with their menu as it currently stands, as the only thing that people reliably buy there are the mainstays. Every attempt to expand or diversify their menu in the last 20-30 years has been a failure.

    Way back when television was more about storytelling. The commercials told the story didn't fill your mind up with just fear ,the one emotion that dominates today's advertising.. It emphasized the use of the product the story behind using the product. Plus they had theme songs that stuck in your head. This is what good advertisement looks like. Today they just don't have a lot of those elements anymore.

    • @bethdibartolomeo2042

      They try to tell a story with drug ads these days, but it's so obvious that it's all staged that it's laughable. Everyone gathers together for strange outings, and the pill user NEVER looks sick. It's the kind of commercials RiffTrax were made for.

      @@bethdibartolomeo2042 you know if you turn down the volume on today's commercials it would tell a totally different story. You would think it had absolutely nothing to do with the product. Aside from product placement of course.

      After memories of Michael Jackson songs in the early to mid 80's, my memories of songs that I just could remember hearing on the radio all the time kick in with "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys in 1988. Yes, I think I was sheltered from music by my parents. But I loved "Kokomo". I also remember loving "Faith" by George Michael and "Wild, Wild West" by The Escape Club. I don't think my parents liked those songs as much. :-)

    Back then most VHS video cassettes were over $100...since most tapes were meant to be bought by video rental stores, thus the term “rental priced”

      @@coraltwining7830 yep! I was lucky to have HBO, so we taped all the movies we wanted to watch over and over. Karate Kid was the first movie I taped off HBO when we got our first VCR. The video rental stores though would charge you over $100 if you lost a tape.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  3 роки тому +2

      This is because they were literally over $100 in most cases prior to about 1989 when "priced to own" releases became the norm.

  • @blakfloyd
    @blakfloyd 3 роки тому +7

    It's crazy to think that people were enamored enough with VCR technology that they'd spend $61 in today's money for Top Gun.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  3 роки тому +9

      The average price of a new release VHS tape back then was $90-100...over $200 adjusted in today's money. That pricing model was meant to scare off the average consumer so that only rental places could afford to buy VHS tapes. Top Gun was one of the first VHS tapes to have ads before the movie started, and was sold at a much lower price point.

    • @Tr0nzoid
      @Tr0nzoid Рік тому

      That adjustment-for-inflation just doesn't work in this case. Buying a videotape for $25 was not perceived as spending much money on it. Still, it wouldn't be common for people to buy the average movie they wanted to watch rather than rent it until DVD came around.

      @@80sCommercialVault well if I'm not mistaken, Barbara Ann was Jan and Dean, wasn't it? My point was merely that I thought it interesting that all of these commercials were takeoffs on the same style of music - right up until I watched the closing credits and was reminded that these were all sponsors of the show not just random advertisements, clearly it was purposeful.

      Barbara Ann was originally recorded by The Regents in 1961. Jan & Dean covered it in first in 1962 but this is a lesser known album track.
