- Diesel Power Challenge 2018 Presented by XDP continues, with competitors racing head-to-head and flat out on the ¼-mile drag strip at Bandimere Speedway. The event is run in a “Quick 8” format, where the top-8 qualified trucks are paired and run off in eliminations to see who is the quickest and fastest! #DieselPowerChallenge

Awful planning on the event coordinators. Real competition here, both racers want an honest redo and they’re told no. This thing gets worse every year and peaked around ‘14-‘15.
Honestly every person should get to try and every person if there able to be on top shouldn't be stopped because they won twice. No comp ever turned people away for winning.
KJ Jones is leading that downhill charge the last few years.

This feels like an amateur event compared to last years DPC. Lets hope 2019 brings back some real trucks/drivers.
For one the announcer talking over people is irritating, and for two, being that this series tests the truck overall and not just racing, the drag racing should be judged by the best et, not reaction time, each truck as different spool up and sitting on boost while the other spools is hard on the truck too. This drag racing portion is my favorite, but its organized pretty poorly for people that actually use their trucks and not just race them...
Except drag racing has ALWAYS had a holeshot component in heads up racing, that's just how it is. You can't just change something because it doesn't suit certain things.

If those dinks couldntn’t pay attention or sound off that things are unclear in the drivers meeting then they got what they deserved.

I agree. I understand that you have to draw the line somewhere in these competitions, especially given time constraints, but I definitely would've preferred to have seen them offer re-run opportunities IF the opponent agreed.

If you allow one, youre allowing all. The other guy unintentionally burned him down, they're following NHRDA/NHRA rules, you can have a stage dual all you want in the pre-stage, when one person lights up the stage bulb, you have 7 seconds to stage or be disqualified. No one wants to be burned down sitting on the converter trying to make boost at altitude.
At least a couple friendly grudge races for us(the viewers), i feel like we were cheated out of some potentially awesome content.

The 11.71 made to the finish line first. Reaction time counts, the 11.71 was .03 seconds faster off the tree
he beat him to the finish line.......that's how drag racing works. all about the reaction time
He tree'd him, he got to 1320ft first with a slower truck because his rt was much better
The time shown is the elapsed time, aka the time from the starting line to the finish. However the race is decided by who physically crossed the finish first, so the guy with the faster et had a slow reaction at the light, and lost
1987FX16 by 1/8 he was atleast a bus length behind

Im wondering if were going to get to see this entire series. Motor Trend is notorious for allowing you to watch a certain amount to get you hooked on the outcome and then nothing until you pay for a subscription!
I see part 1, and part 3. Something is missing here, ill let you guys figure out what it is.
Why so much smoke? Doesn't that mean they are running super rich, and making less power? My 7.3 doesn't do that even on the race tune but granted it isn't setup for drag racing.
Smoke from a diesel doesn't indicate a rich condition the way that it does in a gas engine. Since diesels do not have throttle body's acceleration is controlled by the injection of fuel. More fuel equals more acceleration, and since diesels do not have spark plugs the un burnt fuel simply passes through the engine and produces black smoke. Better to have too much fuel in a performance diesel application than not enough.
Yes, there is a LOT of tuning left on the table with these trucks. A lot of those that do performance diesel applications on a budget simply don't have the knowledge to do it efficiently. Done efficiently, yes the black smoke would clear up and they would have the potential to make more power.

Maybe they should call it Diesel Truck Driver and Builder challenge, if they're gonna base all their competitions around how the guys are handling their rigs versus tests geared towards testing the durability and power of what they're bringing to the challenge.

5:21 what? The guy in the black Chevy in the left lane (Kodi Koch)won. The announcer said the other guy won. I’m confused. Black truck ran 11:68 and the white gmc ran out 11:71. I’m disappointed with the way this whole event was put together this year. 🙃
No, right lane won. The elapsed time doesn't start when the tree turns green. It stars when the start beam is broken. If the driver's reaction time and elapsed time in total are lower than their opponent's then they get the win. It's called a holeshot. It's all about who gets to the finish line first, not who has the lowest elapsed time.
If both guys are good with a re-run then it should be re-ran. Bullshit rule.

Some slow trucks, Friday night out at our local drag strip you can watch some local guys run 9s all night in the 1/4 mile some faster some slower
I don’t think they’re allowed to swap tires and they’re all inexperienced racers. They were all really slow off the line.

the race between the black single cab duramax and the white ext cab duramax was probably the best one. The white duramax treed his opponent and got to the finish first, but that black dirtymax still had a higher mph and a faster time lol
Cody's Truck Still Surprises Me In That Last One
I guess I'm not understanding...I'm 550-600 hp 2nd gen, good tires, lowered, some but not alot of weight taken out and I crack off 12.8 after 12.8 after 12.8 and these guys are DOUBLE that and can't figure out how to baby soft leave the line?
Race at 8,500ft of elevation and watch your ET go in the trash.

I want and love this series and wait every year for it. Then I get disappointed with the DNF's and breakdowns every year. Not so many breakdowns this year but not a lot of action either
So as I understand it that black soot is from incomplete combustion due to an improper fuel/air ratio so why are these guys rolling coal?
Not enough air to burn the fuel. Hence the nitrous clearing up smoke, and the compound turbo 6.0 almost being clean at the line.
Do they drag these with 4H Engaged? Or use Locked Diffs?

They're racing at a high altitude. I'm guessing it's hard to tune the truck to the altitude if your not used to it

Terribly boring racing, along with way too much commentating over the sound of the trucks. Very disappointing.
A couple real trucks and alot of street queens. Only adding tons of boost and big tires doesn't work to well. Trucks like these come into my shop weekly for lift kits and big tires. They usually return on a flatbed. Now that 74 ford is a real truck. You gotta touch, tickle, and wiggle everything! Less nitrous and more blood sweat and tears.

Diesel noob question, why do they operate the nitrous manually?
Nitrous backfires are pretty Knarly when under boost. They could run an injection system that is boost referenced and creates a ramp, but most of these guys dont race at altitude, therefor dont have boost issues. The 12v being mechanical injection had a spool jet to kinda stoke the fire to the turbo, it has no electronics governing fuel delivery. Then as boost climbed the other solenoids kicked in. He's a drag racer, everyone else is street or not at all.

Yes. If we we're racing based on time, you leave when you feel like it. Times would have been way different, but its a drivers race.
Should be based on best times and each racer has 3 passes to make their best time
I feel there is way to much pressure on the drivers not enough on the trucks. This is diesel power challenge and making it nearly impossible to compete because of driver error is now a driver challenge and has nothing to do with diesels.

Impressive trucks in terms of power and build quality on some of them, but my goodness these guys look like they need weeks of practice before any of them would be capable of getting even 80% of their trucks potential

With Shane vs Zack, they said Zack took too long to stage, that's clearly wrong. At 7:18 when they're staging, Zack staged, then Shane staged, then Zack deep staged first, then Shane deep staged. At 7:25, you can see them both deep staged, then Zack's truck inched ahead a bit more and broke the beam, causing a red light.
