Fun fact: I passed a physics test by one point in 10th grade. One of the questions I got right was a question on the difference between a vector and a scalar. I remembered the definition of a vector from the "VECTOR! Committing crimes with both direction AND MAGNUTUDE! Oh yeah" quote. I literally passed a test solely because of Vector
I want to point out that Mike sang "My Way" by Paul Anka nearing the end of Sing, which is a song about a man who's recognized that he's dying soon and wants to go out on his own accord. They foreshadowed his death.
There's also an Urban Legend about people singing My Way and dying. This actually happened in the Philippines where people were fighting so much so that they can sing My Way in a karaoke and they ended up killing each other.
The Lorax is such a significant part of all fandom history. The fact that people were so desperate to ship the once-ler with someone that they literally split him in two to pair him with himself is something that needs to be reflected upon. We did this, and we need to stop pretending like it didn’t happen.
Fun story: While watching Sing 2 with my younger cousins, I asked myself "Hey, where's the mouse from the first one?" I laid down on the couch and put my hand slightly under it, at which point I felt a small fuzzy object that I assumed was a cat toy. When I pulled the object out, however, I found that it was indeed not a cat toy but rather the body of a dead mouse. That gave me all the answers I needed to my previous question.
He sing "My Way" by Frank Sinatra and, there's this superstition in our country that the song is cursed and people who sang "My Way" in a karaoke or bar, they'll die. Super bizarre stuff I know.
The Vector grimwalker theory is actually brilliant, because it also explains how Vector is such a perfect specimen, since he is the culmination of hundreds, possibly thousands of failed Vectors
the idea of vector clones is unironically more entertaining to me than the clone wars. Instead of many clones with the same core structure and fighting for the same purpose, we have many vectors with different personalities, each being less perfect than the last. one thing they all have in common is that they commit crimes with DIRECTION and MAGNITUDE. OH YEAH
Wait hang on a second. If Vector is a clone, then does this mean we see another version of him rise up in the next movie? Maybe it's like an army of Vectors all facing off against Gru?
I'm genuinely surprised that you never talked about how much the first Despicable Me movie's soundtrack SLAPS in every direction and magnitude. It's such an underrated aspect of the movie and is honestly one of the very few that I'd unironically listen to once in a while just because It's that good. Especially the ending song by Robin Thicke out of all people.
I'm probably too confident in saying this, but Despicable Me has the best OST out of the entire studio, and probably one of the best of all time, I will die on this hill. (you know what? change my mind, the franchise as a whole has a goated OST collection)

It's genuinely fascinating the way I forgot literally every single detail about Despicable Me 3, including its existence, but slowly it all came back to me as its review came on
The only thing I can remember from DM3 is that Trey Parker is in it. Him suddenly being in any production outside of ones where he has full involvement and creative control is surreal. Wonder if SP ever made fun of an Illumination movie; can't recall that it has happened yet.

I’ve always had pretty low standards for films as a kid, and even as an adult. I typically enjoy whatever you put in front of me. But I distinctly remember watching Hop as a kid and realizing for the first time that movies can, in fact, be bad.
Eh, I'm not hard to please either and I also hate this freakin movie! I mean, worse flicks came out that year(like Green Lantern and the Smurfs movie) but at least I found some enjoyment in them. Hop just annoyed me at my core!
When I saw El Macho in Despicable Me 2, and they gave him this overly detailed backstory, I said to myself "okay, that's a red herring. No way they're not bad at storytelling that they'd reveal the big bad of mystery in the first minute of the investigation starting." And then they did. I always thought the film could have been more clever if all of the people at the strip mall were retired villains. Like the barber would be "The Eagle" or something. And they all decided to retire after finding new purposes like Gru. And the real villain was the secret agency that was trying to steal all their tech because the guy in charge was a villain himself. The movie had a lot going for it to be good, and then it didn't. It just burned, haaaaard.
Imagine if it was a murder mystery where the main villain (el macho in this case) had killed (albeit in funny pg ways) a lot of other villains and they had to figure out the villain murders. Maybe they did this plot already in a different movie but imagine the potential of it coming from despicable me

The sad thing is, The Lorax could've been amazing if they took the themes of Biggering and made them the focus. Hell, they could've STILL included How Bad Can I Be if they just had it chronicle the very start of The Onceler's descent into prideful greed, then had Biggering come in after he's become a mastermind. It probably could've made it one of Illumination's best.

"Gru can't long to be a Bad Guy again. We can't have the main character of a franchise entitled *DESPICABLE* *ME!!!* be interested in Villainy anymore!" I can not express how happy I was to hear you say that. Times the Liar Revealed Cliche is used in Illumination movies: Despicable Me (2010): It happens when Gru adopts Anges, Edith and Margo and initially lies about the supervillain he secretly is until they find out on their own later in the movie. Hop (2011): Mr. Bunny learns from Carlos his son E.B. 's intentions to run away and complete his dream of being a rock music drummer not the easter bunny and sends the pink berets to Los Angeles to find him and bring him home. Later when E.B. meets Fred O’ Hare and the latter initially wants nothing to do with him; he fakes being injured so the latter would let him stay but E.B. fails to keep the lie forever because he soon sneaks out of the garage and back into the house and makes a mess showing that he is perfectly fine so Fred tried to dump him back into the wild as payback for it until E.B. lying again that he was the Easter Bunny convinced Fred to let him stay but the Pink Berets’ presence following the Hasselof audition causes him to admit the truth behind running away and Mr. Bunny his dad being the real Easter Bunny to Fred but Fred accepts it as at this point accepted E.B. as his friend. It happens briefly in the scene where E.B. fakes his death in the third act. The Lorax (2012), Aloysius O’ Hare the main villain uses a big one where he hides the destruction caused by the Once-Ler and his family from the residents of Thneedville and the makes up the fact that trees are filthy and dangerous and should be avoided and not planted at all costs so they could keep buying his fake purified air so the townsfolk won’t get interested in nature again and plant trees that will turn Carbon Dioxide into Oxygen and therefore no one will buy his purified air anymore, shutting down his business, but Ted soon learns about it when he visits the Once-Ler and soon reveals it to the townsfolk and they turn on and exile O’Hare and let the truffula tree be planted and respect animals, plants and nature once more and have carbon dioxide be turned into oxygen by the plants once more. In the Once-Ler’s flashbacks a brief one happens where after The Lorax and animals save the Once-Ler and he questions how his bed got in the water the Lorax reluctantly admits the truth behind putting his bed in the water though they saved him only due to Pipsqueak’s presence before the Once-Ler makes his promise not to cut down any more trees. Another happens were when the Once-Ler initially keeps his promise and has him and his family make the thneeds by harvesting the tufts without killing the trees and harming the environment, his greedy and lazy family manipulate him into cutting down the trees to speed up its production and become the egocentric greedy businessman he is and lie that his actions will cause no consequences for the environment and keep the Lorax away to prevent him from snapping him out of the manipulations and see the damage he and his family are causing and by the time the Once-Ler does it is too late, and his mom throws him away like garbage and makes Bret his new son before she and the rest of the family leave with all the money and the Once-Ler having a grudge and hostility towards his family especially his mom ever since for manipulating him and for destroying the forest and the animals’ home all for the promised money and fame. Despicable Me 2 (2013): None are used. Minions (2015): None are used. The Secret Life of Pets (2016), none are used though there is a third-act misunderstanding and plot-mandated friendship failure between Duke and Max where after they arrive at Duke’s old owners’ home so Duke would get to reunite with and live with his old owner and give Max his position as Katy’s best pet back, they discover that he died of old age and a new family with a pet cat moved in and though he initially refused to believe it Duke does and he stupidly assumes that Max knew the truth all along and had been trying to rid of him just so he could have Katy all to himself again and reprimands him for it before their e-encounter with SnowBall and the Flushed Pets, and in the climax the misunderstanding is cleared up and Duke reconciles with Max and the two live peacefully together with Katy again. Sing (2016): Buster Moon uses a big one that becomes the plot device for the film, (Aside from Lance keeping his romance with Becky a secret from Ash and him cheating on her until the end and Johnny attending the singing competition behind his father, Big Daddy’s back the revelation causes Big Daddy to angrily disown Johnny until their reconciliation at the end and for Ash to break-up with Lance.) after he learns that Mrs. Crawley by accident had added zeros to the flyer for the singing competition and changed the 1,000 dollars to 100,000 dollars and scared to reveal the truth to the constants manages to lie about the prize money until he gains the real one with Nana Goodleman’s reluctant help, but by the end of the second act, the Bears and Mike end up learning the truth and when the other protagonists confront Buster for his lie it leads to Moon Theater’s destruction and Nana’s falling out with Buster and Judith and the bank repossessing the lot where the theater once stood, and Buster moving in with Eddie and cleaning cars in a car wash as a new job, it leaves everyone heroic BSoD (As it also cost Ash her boyfriend Lance and Johnny his father Big Daddy) until Buster watching Meena sing at the lot of the former encouraged him to have him and his troupe perform the singing competition without the prize money at the lot just for fun and behind Judith’s back but when she finds out she attempts to halt the show and send everyone away for trespassing on private property and call the police to have everyone arrested for it but this fails and Judith gets pricked by Ash’s quills during her performance of “Set It All Free” while Johnny and his father reconcile and Nana has a change of heart after secretly watching the show and reforms Judith and reposses the lot where the theater once stood and has it reopened with Nana and Buster as its managers. Despicable Me 3 (2017): Gru has one with his brother Dru where he lies about getting the diamond from Baltzaar to have them serve as villains again but in reality did it to stop Baltzaar’s plans so he and Lucy would be rehired at the anti-villain league, and when the truth comes out it causes Dru to have a falling out with Gru and disown him as his brother, but the two manage to reconcile and alongside Lucy, the minions, Lucy, Anges and Edith and Margo defeat Baltzaar in the climax and stop his evil plans. Gru also has a brief one towards Gru and Lucy about never returning to villainy which he and the minions of course do and when Gru and Lucy find out they choose not to stop him but let him be the villain he wishes and follow Dru and Gru’s father’s legacy of being one anyway. The Grinch (2018): The Grinch as one while disguising himself as Santa Claus and stealing the whos’ Christmas and pretending to be Santa to Cindy after she “catches” him, Cindy Lou Who towards her mother and brothers in regards to catching “Santa” when both truths are revealed they are forgiven for it though the Grinch really did the wrong thing though he redeems himself for it at the end, Cindy was just trying to help her mother via her wish to Santa. The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019): None aside from Max’s minor ones to Rooster.
I have a memory of Illumination that I'll never forget. When I was younger I went to a big girl scout sleepover event that took place inside a roller rink. Right before we went to sleep, they had us all vote on two movies we could watch. The first one was Inside Out, which is one of my favorite movies. After it was over, I was feeling pretty tired and decided to sleep when they played the second movie. The second movie voted for was Minions. And let me tell you, trying to fall asleep while listening to these yellow little bastards babble, the sound of their obnoxious voice echoing off the speakers and straight into my ears as I try to block off the sound with my pillow until I eventually pass out. Now that, THAT is a special kind of hell I will never forget.
OMG I have a very similar memory, a girl scout sleepover at a roller rink, only the movie they chose to put on was 13 going on 30. I hate that movie to this day
I have something similar too. My younger siblings were doing a family night and I really wanted to watch Kiki’s Delivery Service or Emperors New Groove. but they wanted to watch Minions since Kiki seemed to girly for them especially for a guy and they never watched ENG. When they turned it on, I just watched Kiki on my phone and it was so annoying to listen to it while having Minion noises in the background.
once when I was in elementary my tio wanted to spend some time with me, so him, his daughter, and I went to go watch despicable me 2. I remember just being completely stone faced and after it was over thinking "I don't like the minions anymore" lol
Fun fact: Illumination actually wanted Benedict Cumberbatch to use his natural British accent for the role of the Grinch, but he thought that using a voice like that would make him seem out-of-place compared to the Whos of Whoville, who all use American accents. And of course, rather than sitting him down and explaining to him that the Grinch is _supposed_ to be an outsider who doesn't fit in, and that him being the only one with a different accent would actually fit the story and the character's relation to the Whos of Whoville perfectly... Illumination apparently just went "yUp, mAkEs ToTaL sEnSe" and agreed to him using the somewhat-nasally, American-accented, not-at-all-sinister voice he uses in the final movie.
They did a similar thing with Fate:The Winx Saga. Abigail Coven’s Bloom, outsider protagonist and only fairy from Earth, has an American accent, while the rest of the cast is British. And if Fate: The Winx Saga does something better than you, you’ve screwed up.
@@BucioTheZenith i think it was both his mistake for not understanding the character and Illumination mistake for "forgetting" this fact. I say forgetting in quotes beacuse they probably didn't even care about the orignal story
The Grinch has always been one of the most interesting phenomenon with movies for me. Somehow two different people made Grinch movies and then had the exact opposite problem. Ron Howard’s Grinch has a really grimy Whoville and misses the point of the story by having the Whos antagonize The Grinch first, while Jim Carrey just absolutely kills in the title role. Like, legit, my family still watches The Jim Carrey Grinch to this day because of how memorable and iconic he is. Illumination, on the other hand, manages to capture the spirit of Whoville being this wholesome and sweet Christmas town, but has the most milquetoast and uninteresting Grinch they could have made. Like, I seriously don’t know how they managed to make him such a boring character. You’d think the people behind Despicable Me would have at least gotten The Grinch right in making him a total jerk, but he’s not even really mean or cranky. They just make him… some guy, really. There’s nothing memorable about their Grinch movie at all.
To be fair to the live action Grinch, the grimy vibes of Whoville were meant to paint the idea of a town that had forgotten about the spirit of Christmas and focused solely on the capitalism parts of it. That was always an underlying thing even in the books; while not outright stated the Grinch hated what he saw as excessive noise makers that'd be abandoned once they lost luster, a bunch of food for no other reason than to have food, and the fact he was just a prick who wanted peace of mind and wanted to hear the town cry for once. In the movie they just dial that to an extreme: he lives in a landfill effectively full of that stuff. You could argue the backstory of the Grinch is a bit weak and I'd agree, but I'd say it manages to add onto the book in a unique way that still keeps the general message of "There's more to Christmas than meets the eye". I can get not liking the vibes of the movie and think it spits on the book - but it's a more faithful adaptation than whatever they fucking did to the Lorax or the Grinch by Illumiantion. Like seriously - they really missed the point of the Grinch being the Grinch in the illumination movie. That's as crucial as the underlying message. The Grinch in that movie 'wants' Christmas but is literally too tsundere to get it normally. That's not at all what the Grinch was like at all. Tldr: I recommend watching some deeper analysis of the adaptations the Live Action movie did, whether you hate the movie or not - there's some genuinely good ideas the guys had, and if you wanna see how that went all wrong- see the Cat in the Hat movie, which was made to try and emulate the Grinch. And failed. Horribly.

This is gonna sound really weird, but my least favorite part of the minions movie was that it totally scrambled their lore. On the disc for Despicable Me 1 was a fun short where gru explains how he and dr. nefario created the minions, which was a great fit; like most of their inventions, the minions are helpful and useful, but also very obviously flawed. It made perfect thematic sense. Now, their lore is a bunch of nonsensical garbage that leads nowhere...
If I recall correctly, I read that the minions were originally designed to have a more monstrous appearance, but due to budget restrictions (Despicable Me did has a slightly lower budget than most other major films of the year), they made the minions much simpler, with assorted body types, eyes, and hair. Props to Illumination, because this worked, though it unfortunately set the trend of Illumination being able to put very little effort and still turn a profit.

Nefario probably pulled Gru’s childhood fart gun out of storage when he thought he was asked. Yes I know I am going to bat for Minions 2 I didn’t realize at first but that’s where we are now
I literally met the guy who voiced vector (pls don’t @ me for not remembering his name lmao I’m tired rn) but holy hell it was fun. Apparently he planned on giving Vector a deep, sultry, manly voice (because of how nerdy vector looks, he thought it’d be funny). I love that there is an alternate universe out there where vector has like, a kronk voice lmao
The thing that Illumination does consistently well across all their movies is make them good as far as the animation itself goes. Every movie they've made is visually great. It just sucks that the stories themselves tend to be lackluster.
I agree. While I don't hate Illumination like most people do, I feel that most of their films feel very basic when it comes to the stories of those films, but there are exceptions, like Despicable Me, Sing 2 and Super Mario Bros.
And it’s clear they’re just trying to target child audiences. Which means they’re not going to be history-making cinema experiences. My little sister watched a lot of these “awful” movies and had a good time. They suck watching them as adults, but he’s really being a bit overcritical here.
@@GabbyJFS_02bruh. Megamind, Shrek, wall•e, toy story, ratatouille, Incredibles, Mulan and the prince of Egipt are movies Geared towards kids and they still have emotional resolve and character arcs, and a great plot that doesnt happen in illumination movies. And the ones i listed, are far more enjoyable. Show your sister actual cinema and stop trying to make a point that doesnt have feet to stand on.
We need to really appreciate Shaff for this. If we thought the sony ranking was bad this must have been torturous for him. Thank you Shaff for sacrificing your soul to give us entertainment.
The Lorax could’ve had _such_ a huge impact had they kept the original premise of the book. Biggering is an absolute BANGER that DESERVED to be in the movie. But I guess it hit too close to home and they had to go more comedic for the kids.
I heard somewhere that advertisement partners actually requested that the song be cut because it spoke down on their practices and companies, so there's that. We live in a dystopian future istg.
It’s a real tragedy that they sanitised the whole book in the name of corporate greed and a happy ending so kids don’t get scared at the fact that the environment is being killed by corporate leaders that you could never know. I highly recommend you check out the video made by the sin squad on biggering
The problem with the 2012 version for me, is that it never took anything from the 1972 cartoon special. The Once-ler, while being faceless in the special, is far more aware of his actions, while not doing anything about it.
Tbh, if they took "Sing", and entirely changed the whole premise of the movie to just be the story of Taron's gorilla character, I'd probably enjoy the movie much more. Out of all the characters and their stories, his was the only one that made me somewhat invested. (and also cause it was surprisingly unexpected, and felt like the least tropey out of all the character stories in the movie) Any time the movie would move to showcase what's happening with other characters, I always went like "Okay, but please go back to the gorilla guy soon".

As a latino, when Schaff started to talk about the iffy racial implications of Carlos' mistreatment, I burst out laughing. It was hilarious, honestly But to add another nail on Hop's coffin: The movie gets even worse at the end when EB says he'll be the easter bunny, and his dad is like "But son, what about your dream?" and EB goes something like "I'm still gonna be a drummer. But I'll also be the easter bunny". So the last 80 minutes of my life have been pointless since all EB needed to learn to solve the conflict was the amazing superpower of *time management* and the fact the entire movie wouldn't have happened had he put 2 and 2 together before or even during his conversation with his dad.

42:29 to 51:57 He talked about how horrible Hop was for 9 minutes and 28 seconds. That's how you know he genuinely hates this movie from the deepest depths of his heart.
Ever since Russell Brand’s sexual allegations have come out, it brought me back to Schaffrillas’ rant on Hop, especially on the character of EB. It’s scary how well that rant has aged, and how hard it is to look at EB with Russell Brand’s controversy, especially the part where he sniffs James Marsden’s sister’s hair. I guess it’s definitely going to make Hop’s reputation even worse now.
@@michaelmcdoesntexist8350 tdlr? I don’t want to go into details but if you’re brave enough to look into the details of Russell Brand’s history of grooming minors, either watch a video or read an article related to the subject.
I 110% believe the only reason this movie was made at all is because he was mildly popular at the time because he was with Katy Perry and people wanted to see what crazy and wacky movies her husband would make. Hop truly feels like a stoner movie.
So fun fact, my mother really likes illumination movies, like, she REALLY likes everything they put out, she loves the minions like any Facebook Mom does, takes us to watch every single movie that has been released, and when I was a kid she bought the DvDs so we could watch it again (even though I've always found them boring) However TO THIS DAY she refuses to watch "The Grinch", she saw the trailer, and convinced herself to NOT watch it, despite it having an actor she liked as the main character, and being centered around her favorite holiday, and an iconic character she also likes. I think THAT says enough about the movie's quality
Minor defense for Sing 1: They do a clever joke of the chameleon secretary having a glass eye, which makes it look like her eyes look in different directions like a real chameleon does...and that's really all.
The amount of terror I felt when we reached the final entry on this list, but still had 15 minutes of the video left, cannot be overstated. I love this.
I know, I mean, I predicted it probably was going to be Hop when the video started, but after seeing talk about The Secret Life of Pets 2 and their adaptation of The Grinch, my brain could not comprehend a worse movie, that I was terrified to find out what it was. And then when he said that he noticed a unfortunate trend in the animation industry, and then the underwear water music played, and the shot of the photo realistic Mario gave so chills. I mean I suppose both weren't the worst thing ever, they were just weirdly effective
Fun Fact: In the original draft for Despicable Me, there were only five minions, each with a different personality. But later, they changed it so there were tons of them that all had the same personality to make it more comedic.
That makes sense, since it's just the three to the mall, and the two who hang out with Gru and the kids getting attention, and they do have some personality to them.
There were tons of minions in the first movie, but when I think about it, only five of them were really focused on. Same could be said for the three minions that received most of the focus for their own movie, Minions.
Personally I think Despicable me 3 could've actually been a good movie if Drew was the villain. Maybe Gru taught him how to be a villain, and the two of the, started scheming a whole bunch of evil plans behind Lucy's back. Then, Drew does something truly evil that puts Gru's family in danger, and Gru realizes the reason why he stopped being a villain and fights back against his brother, showing that your biological family isn't necesarilly as good as found family. Gru already has has troubles with his biological mother in the past and this would've been an interesting development of the story. Instead we got cheese, unicorns, 80s references, and a jail scene. whooooo so fun
I somehow think Despicable Me 3 did a better Child Actor turned Super Villain kind of villain better than Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. At least Balthazar Brat wasn't based off of an irl child star and wasn't a complete scumbag like Peter Pan

Based on your description of Hop (2011), it sounds like less of a movie that's supposed to have a happy ending, and more like a 1984 or Animal Farm-style film, warning about giving someone (the dad) too much power, and oppressing the working class. It's an absolute masterpiece when it comes to creating anger in the audience. Edit: Looking at the analysis of The Lorax, I think that Illumination's whole thing is making dystopian films. They're so good at it, and have produced the desired effect based on Schaff's reaction.

The way you described its immense flaws, the build-up with the Grinch, the sound choices, everything paints the picture of this Lovecraftian abomination that should never have been allowed life
Me and my friend actually had a long conversation today about the implications of the Lorax. At the end we came to these conclusions: 1. O'Hare controls a city state and is actually doing the best thing for his people despite the moral questions having to do with it. 2. Thneedvile actually is full of a type of gas as opposed to air, as the air in the bottles comes blowing out because of pressure OUTSIDE the bottle rather than inside. And 3. The Onceler was the poorest in his family, and was the literal anti prodigal son. This is shown by his horse and wagon compared with his families super camper. There was more, but this was the best out of the stuff we dreamed up.
And the second Death Star blowing up was actually a top secret plot to launch Palpatine's soul all the way across the galaxy to land on the secret Sith planet, which is how he got there in Rise of Skywalker. Plus, the sheer magnitude of all that Death Star kinetic energy was enough to power the entire armada for years! Palpatine really is a genius!
I love how Despicable Me 3’s ending is actually a huge event in its own universe, but it’s such a ridiculous franchise that no one noticed the Minions even abandoned Gru again.
So, I worked in the electronics department of Walmart some time ago. Back then (not sure if it's the same now), they played some sort of looping programs which changed every month on the televisions there. For some reason, for a brief period of time they decided to play a movie for the month instead of the typical advertising stuff. -A- movie. A single movie. On loop. Constantly. For a full month. The first movie they chose was The Lorax. What followed can only be described as cruel and unusual punishment. Every day I walked into work, The Lorax would be there. 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, the Lorax nestled itself into the deepest recesses of my mind. Every scene, every song, every frame, was branded into my memory. It haunted my nightmares. I would often find myself unconsciously humming How Bad Can I Be. Even now, almost 10 years later, it haunts me. I live a good Christian life because if Hell exists, I know in my heart what my eternal punishment will be. It will simply be that month, replayed until the end of time. I will never forgive Walmart for this.

I actually think that the basis of this interpretation of The Grinch is an interesting spin on the character: of placing the whole idea of "the mean old Grinch" in his assumptions of how people perceive him and having his change of heart be instead a change in perception in realizing that these people actually want to get to know him. If they did away with the pointless side plots and actually put a bit of passion into the execution, I really think they might have done something with it.
I couldn't agree more. Illumination's Grinch came across as hating people more than he hated Christmas, which is totally understandable. As a hardcore introvert, 90% of his grouchy/mean moments struck me as either relatable or cathartic. I think what The Grinch really needed was a more competent team of writers. Fuck that remix of "You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch", though. It was almost as bad as Fallout Boy's cover of the Ghostbusters Theme.

Hop was the only movie by Illumination that I haven't heard of. The experience I had at the ending of this ranking was like coming across a hidden Lovecraftian tome. Where it's horrors consumed my soul.
I heard of it but never knew how bad it actually was. I had a "friend" (not really) in primary school who tried to get me to watch it in theaters. I refused. And keep in mind that same "friend" made me watch Turbo three times in a row, binge literally every single Air Buddies movie, binge every Alpha and Omega movie, and forced me to play Madagascar Kart (terrible Shovelware Mario Kart clone) on Wii for 4 hours straight. That kid might have had the worst taste in games/movies I've ever seen. It borders on parody.
There is one positive that came out of hop. It made James Marsden’s performance in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies better since he already had experience interacting with cgi character.
I always thought it was Dr. Nefario who created the minions, given that he always knows everything about them and always hangs out with them. He even kills some of them as if he can make them again.
Maybe that’s what there actual origins were intended to be but then the creators of the minion movie were like “we can’t make a movie outta that, let alone a money sucking one that appeals to two year olds!”
Actually Dr Nefario is Han solo: 1)Both did the same jobs when young and old. 2)Both interact with species that dont speak english. 3)Both frozen in Carbonite (at one point). 4)Both change allegiances at one point and then revert back.
in original canon, Gru (and maybe Nefario I'm not sure) created the minions for his own deeds. they were not some old-as-time organism, they were just lab grown and created. and my favorite part is the fact that Gru is a genuinely good boss to them, despite literally creating and owning them
So I was watching an interview with trey Parker about despicable me 3, and he looked like he didn’t want to be there, and the only reason he was doing it was because his daughter liked minions. He hates the minions as much as we do.
One praise I can give to Illumination is that they are the only animated film company to actually put faith in cinemas, even during COVID. Other companies would just give up and move on to streaming services, which has its own ups and downs (and I do mean it when I say downs, like forced exclusivity and the fact the media can easily be removed without a way to watch them again), but Illumination would happily support theaters no matter what. To that, Minions 2 deserves all the box office in the world after we thought it would bomb. Also, as for the Mario movie, it had better leave an impact. Not just be a disposable piece of media. The worst thing a movie can be is in-between, and if that movie gives no reason for a rewatch, that'd hurt Mario a lot. Not like, destroy Mario brutally. But be an example of how a mighty property has a piece of media nobody would go back to. Something that stands against said a mighty property. I'd rather have the movie be Mario Teaches Typing or Hotel Mario bad than Ultra Smash okay.
Because who would ever pay for a streaming service of a studio with one of the worst track records in film? Also I could be wrong, but it's probably a lot more expensive to maintain servers than it is to just give the films to theaters and have them play it whenever, no online access required.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 worst track records? More like mediocre. I really hate when someone calls Illumination one of the worsts. They're far from that. For certain, Illumination movies never make me feel bad watching it. But not good either. That and Illumination movies are disposable. Better make a booming first stream of cash than to rely on longevity for them I guess.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 lots. But they're all obviously bad, like the mockbuster studios like Video Brinquendo or just bad like Splash Entertainment. Then again, the only reason why they don't make movies as bad as Norm of the North is because they never made movies as good as Toy Story.
On that last statement of rather having a bad game that's at least fun in its weird ways (hotel mario) than a bland one(ultra smash), I kinda agree with because to me, Happy Home Designer is a desent game which have a great soundtrack, good story and allows people to be creative on the homes of the villagers and the town. But amiibo festival on the other hand.... the soundtrack and graphics are the only good part of the game as the gameplay takes away what makes all the other games main and spinoff so special (and I only watched people play the game on UA-cam!) So I prefer a game with at least some effort put into it rather than a game that's rushed and completely misses the point of charm.
I hope that when Bowser Kidnaps Princess Peach, she will have a little sideplot to herself where she escorts a plan to escape from Bowser's Castle before Mario comes to rescue her. She can Still be a Damsel In Distress, but she'll have some depth to her character. Edit: Okay Nevermind. It looks like Peach will Not be a Damsel In Distress at all.

I have terrible memories associated with Hop even though I never saw it. My maternal grandmother made it obvious that my mother was her least favorite child, and that disdain led to my mom's only child (me) being the least favorite grandchild by association. One time for Christmas, my grandmother gave me a DVD sleeve containing the bonus disk for Hop (back when DVDs were the primary way to watch movies at home, they would often come with two disks with one containing the movie and the other containing extra content related to the movie). She didn't even give me the box the DVDs came in. The actual movie disk and box went to her only grandson who was her golden child of the next generation during the Easter season. All the other grandchildren got a bunch of things, but the only thing I got was a bonus disc for a movie I never saw. At least it's clear I wasn't missing out on a good movie, so thank you Schaff for making a bad memory a little less bad.

I'm going to be *very* interested to see how the Illumination Mario film turns out. Not because I'm sure the movie will be good, but because this movie is going to be the ultimate test for this studio. When you have a name as universally recognizable as Mario, on top of how infamously strict and stubborn Nintendo is with letting others handle their properties, Illumination *needs* to know that they can't afford to half-ass this movie like they do with all their other movies. And the fact that, outside of the cast reveal, they're being weirdly secretive about this movie and its progress, I feel like they do indeed know this. Maybe this movie will finally give Illumination the kick in the pants it needs to realize "Oh shoot, we need to actually put effort into our movies!", and depending on how well this movie performs maybe they'll continue to develop and finally mature into a reasonably decent animation studio. OR the movie will suck and they'll have learned nothing. Either way, I'm really curious to see what exactly Illumination will do now that they're put into a position they've never been in before, and see if this changes things for the better or worse.
It would be hillarious if the reason Illumation's other movies are so shitty is they were spending all their time on the Mario movie and it becomes a masterpiece.
Chris Pratt and Jack Black won't let us down. Even if the writing is TERRIBLE, their acting will save the movie. I'm ready to see Chris Pratt say his famous catchphrase: "It's Mario'in time" and Mario all over everything
I think regardless if the Mario movie is a train wreck or the best video game movie out there, I will still watch it. It’s entirely absurd that Nintendo of all people would trust this company to handle its IP. Along with having a celebratory cast do all the iconic characters. ESPECIALLY Jack Black as Bowser. I need an evil musical rock number from Bowser. And overall it’s a movie I need to experience. Tho I should also point out. Nintendo allowed Ubisoft to use Mario with their Rabbids, which is essentially the minions of the video game world. And they made a surprisingly well made video game out of it. And gonna get a sequel sometime soon. So they are 1 to 1 on lending their IP to companies that made crap and had annoying characters.

the idea of vector clones is unironically more entertaining to me than the clone wars.

When I saw El Macho in Despicable Me 2, and they gave him this overly detailed backstory, I said to myself "okay, that's a red herring. No way they're not bad at storytelling that they'd reveal the big bad of mystery in the first minute of the investigation starting."
And then they did.
It just burned, haaaaard.
holy shit you actually did it, you wrote a better Despicable Me sequel than Illumination did XD
El macho is still pretty coolio tho
what happened to him after he was defeated
Imagine if it was a murder mystery where the main villain (el macho in this case) had killed (albeit in funny pg ways) a lot of other villains and they had to figure out the villain murders. Maybe they did this plot already in a different movie but imagine the potential of it coming from despicable me
It delt like it was going that way. Maybe in an older draft of the script.
Despicable Me was actually heartwarming, sometimes I forget that because of the saturation of minions in every facet of media and culture.

Times the Liar Revealed Cliche is used in Illumination movies:
Despicable Me (2010): It happens when Gru adopts Anges, Edith and Margo and initially lies about the supervillain he secretly is until they find out on their own later in the movie.

So all of this would’ve been avoided if Benedict Cumberbatch understood the character of the Grinch a little better?
@@BucioTheZenith i think it was both his mistake for not understanding the character and Illumination mistake for "forgetting" this fact.
I say forgetting in quotes beacuse they probably didn't even care about the orignal story
I thought Benedict Cumberbatch was really great as the Grinch.
Come on Benedict, people would have *loved* your intimidating voice for the Grinch!
Yeah I fell asleep in the theater when watching it and I only do that to movies that don't catch my attention
And failed. Horribly.

The thing that Illumination does consistently well across all their movies is make them good as far as the animation itself goes. Every movie they've made is visually great. It just sucks that the stories themselves tend to be lackluster.
Every movie they've made is visually great, except Hop.

The Lorax could’ve had _such_ a huge impact had they kept the original premise of the book. Biggering is an absolute BANGER that DESERVED to be in the movie. But I guess it hit too close to home and they had to go more comedic for the kids.
I have the lorax's greed speech memorized and branded into my brain

The only impact it did was Tumblr. If it wasn't for that sans vs reigen poll wouldn't exist

(and also cause it was surprisingly unexpected, and felt like the least tropey out of all the character stories in the movie)
Any time the movie would move to showcase what's happening with other characters, I always went like "Okay, but please go back to the gorilla guy soon".

Honestly that's exactly how I thought this movie would go when I watched the first trailer.
That would have been great to see! Too bad they didn’t go for it. But it’s fun to think about what could have been
I somehow think Despicable Me 3 did a better Child Actor turned Super Villain kind of villain better than Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.

Me and my friend actually had a long conversation today about the implications of the Lorax. At the end we came to these conclusions:
The lore-ax
These conclusions are very good
And the second Death Star blowing up was actually a top secret plot to launch Palpatine's soul all the way across the galaxy to land on the secret Sith planet, which is how he got there in Rise of Skywalker. Plus, the sheer magnitude of all that Death Star kinetic energy was enough to power the entire armada for years! Palpatine really is a genius!

If they did away with the pointless side plots and actually put a bit of passion into the execution, I really think they might have done something with it.

I remember watching it when it came out and thinking "Wow, that was a stupid movie. Why did they make this?"

Actually Dr Nefario is Han solo:
1)Both did the same jobs when young and old.
2)Both interact with species that dont speak english.
3)Both frozen in Carbonite (at one point).
4)Both change allegiances at one point and then revert back.
in original canon, Gru (and maybe Nefario I'm not sure) created the minions for his own deeds. they were not some old-as-time organism, they were just lab grown and created. and my favorite part is the fact that Gru is a genuinely good boss to them, despite literally creating and owning them
he probably clones the minions
Well too bad.
They've been around for hundreds of millions of years.
So I was watching an interview with trey Parker about despicable me 3, and he looked like he didn’t want to be there, and the only reason he was doing it was because his daughter liked minions.
He hates the minions as much as we do.
That’s a fun fact
@@kennydarmawan13 So are there studios that have done worse than them in your opinion?
Remember, if the Mario movie beats Despicable Me, it’s because Nintendo’s was keeping a close eagle eye on it
It looks like it’s going to be better than every other Illumination movie by a landslide.
they finally received resistance from sonic again and i really really really hope that they can compete

I remember putting on Minions for my four year old niece, neither of us ever saw it before, we get like thirty minutes in and she asked "Uncle Lu can you please turn this off I'm bored" I was so relieved
