Reminder that before Spiderverse, Surf's Up was the only Sony Animated movie to have an Oscar nomination, this movie really surfed so Spiderverse could swing.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the first movie I remember watching as a kid that represented the girl wearing glasses as the "prettier" version of her, and as a little girl wearing glasses, that really meant a whole lot to me. I still remember that striking a chord with me as a kid.
I think glasses are adorable and part of me thinks I'll be fine when my eyes inevitably stop working (needing glasses runs in the family) because I just think wearing glasses would be an interesting new look for me
It just goes to show how right and overhated AniMat was for bashing (pre-2019) Sony Pictures Animation to the ground. Sure, before July 2018 (which was only a half-year before Into the Spider-verse came and finally saved the studio big time), AniMat was probably too harsh on the animation studio (to the point of FINALLY WISHING DEATH UPON THEM IN HIS EMOJI MOVIE REVIEW!!!!), but then again, at the end of the day, it’s great to see that he has the intelligence to bash Sony Animation every time it makes a film like all their direct to DVD sequels (Scared Silly being the only one of the four I don’t consider the worst of the worst. Bad? Sure. But terrible? Well, at least they actually tried to feel more like a genuine sequel to Open Season 1), Hotel Transylvania 3 and their trilogy of live-action remakes of the 2010s (The Smurfs 1 & 2 and especially Peter Rabbit 1. I haven’t seen Peter Rabbit 2, and I don’t think I want to…), which they made most of.
One extra detail that probably needs mentioning, in Mitchells vs the machines, Katie’s motivations are told through narration, where Rick’s motivations aren’t even told to us, we’re shown them through the videotapes we see of him and Katie. It’s a really subtle contrast that I didn’t even pick up on until my 3rd viewing!
One thing I just noticed, is that mirrors their worldview thing. Katie is explained using natural human contact, while Rick is explained using virtual media.
All the Hotel Transylvania movies are ao well animated on a technical level, it's been compared to "a team of automobile experts tasked with making a clown car" and I think that's pretty accurate
Seriously, the technicals behind how they animated it is amazing. They edited the model's meshes per frame to mimic the stylized squash and stretch of 2D, and it looks beautiful. If only the writing was on the same level
"I genuinely want to know why the people who made this movie thought a donkey and his annoying bird friend were more interesting protagonists than the parents of Jesus Christ" is legitimately my favorite line from any Schaffrilas video. It sounds so f*cking funny out of context and I quote it all the time for no reason at all other than the fact that I just want to say it
@@OmarFW no they need to learn to stop butting in with their crap ideas. So many times especially with the Raimi and Webb spider man movies they were ruined because they didn’t let the creator just make a movie. They kept saying add this in, do this or we want this. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was my entire childhood. I loved the premise and the first cast and everything. It’s just one of those films that was perfect (at least to 7 year old me).
The commercials should’ve been like, “hey, we know this is gonna be a sh!t movie but it’s just a fundraiser for this movie that will blow you away. So please watch the M E H movie so we can make the film of the decade. Thanks!”
my friend and i had to watch it (because we were hanging out and going to see a movie, but her little brother was there so we had to see something that would entertain him),,, so now i don't feel as bad about watching it.

@SyedIhsaan I disagree actually. ITSV is a complete experience, whereas ATSV ended on a pretty brutal cliffhanger that IMO weakens the story a smidge. Still phenomenal though.
@@randomcat5262 good dinosaur had a little to much chibi-toy animation, cars 3 had classical disney animation with good quality but it was extremely boring
@zoorockf1 lmao, those are perfect comparisons and you are very correct. If someone were to film a literal dumpster fire, it wouldn't compare to how much of a dumpster fire Surfs up 2 is.
I have never, EVER, heard Schaff be that livid in all the years of watching his content, and he unleases it only when talking about Surf's Up 2. It kinda startled me when I first saw it.
I think my favourite part about Wish Dragon is how the story isn't centered around romance but rather a boy trying to reuinite with a childhood friend after they had to split up because her family had to move. Its a lot more compelling to root for the two of them when the reasoning is "This person was an important part of my childhood and I want us to have a close friendship again after losing it" rather than your typical "I really like pretty lady and want us to be together".
Even though there are still many hints throughout the movie that the 2 of them are developing feeling for each other, and it kinda lets you assume the close friendship continues to grow until it turns into a romantic relationship later on.
@@Robalexe That's perfectly fine, because there's an actual REASON there for them to have feelings for each other, rather than just "I just met pretty lady and she did nice things and is nice and I love her now."

I love how unique all of the animation styles are. Cloudy, Spiderverse, Mitchells, even emoji movie. They're all so damn distinct and I really like the diversity
You can't tell me that if you put Mitchells next to Hotel Transylvania next to Arthur Christmas (best movie all time should have won an Oscar for best picture in history) they're very different
@@HummusIsHome well those are fine examples (hotel transylvania whatever) but you can't tell me that animation is a redeeming quality of a lot of these movies
One thing I really like about Sonys animation is that it tends to be visually quite distinct, the characters often have this zany energy to them that you normally only find in 2d-cartoons.
My personal theory is that Surfs Up 2 takes place in an alternate reality, where the protagonist was inspired by Penguin John Cena instead of Z, so he had completely different morals and alternate events played out.
2:02 I wish I could fully express how magical the intro to this segment is. The iconic "Disappointment in The Game of Life!" jingle, then nothing. Just darkness. Silence. The poster for the commercial slowly fades in and zooms out. James Phyrillas, in a tranquil fury, speaks a dread-inducing sentence that perfectly prepares the viewer to experience the ensuing manifestation of unadulterated Hell. "To be perfectly honest, it feels really unfair to rank Surf's Up 2: WaveMania as a part of this list for one simple fact: it. is not. a movie." Phenomenal.
I think Cloudy realy showed Sony's true potential that was hiding, and after the emoji movie I think they decided to go for quality over cash grabs, which seems to have really worked out with them. Honestly, I'm getting more and more hyped for each of their releases, they're up there with Pixar in my eyes. They're so easily on their way to being one of the best studios alongside Dreamworks and Pixar.
in a way the emoji movie doesn't seem to be a complete waste. sony's been doing pretty good since then. so i wonder if they'd still be making good movies today if they never learned that lesson.
Strange cause I went with my family to see it and the best I heard from them was it’s ok. My dad said it had too much going on( but that makes for him, it’s a movie he would get more out of the rewatch), and my brother refuses to give me a reason.
Hotel Transylvania may not be a great film story-wise, but I absolutely adore its rubberhose-style, energetic animation. I honestly think the animation makes the experience of watching it that much better.
Yeah, never was a big fan of those movies themselves, but I gave it a lot of points for doing something new in an industry that had gotten in a rut animation-wise. That's not to say that movies like Encanto, Moana, etc aren't beautifully animated, but Sony's willingness to try new things and succeed hopefully opens doors for Disney to do something a little less conventional and safe seeing how much money a lot of the Sony ones made.
27:45 Fun Fact: The funni actually exists because in other countries, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is given a less generic title. In which it's called Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation. If you ask me "A Monster Vacation" sounds a lot better then "Summer Vacation".
Into the Spiderverse really is just way too good to be true. I went into the theatre not expecting much and then left with so much love for that universe and its characters. It shook me to the core seeing such a perfect movie
It fuckin shook me just seeing so much love and personality bleed through. That almost never happens with big animations and for a fuckin spiderman movie of all things to just let the film go nuts it feels like mistake from the execs in the best way possible
Even though I knew that the Peter Parker in Miles's universe died since like 5 years before I watched the movie came out, when I watched it I became so sad that Miles's Peter died. I had NEVER felt this way about Peter dying in Miles's universe. Not only that, when I first saw the teaser for movie about different versions of Spiderman, something that I have loved from the start I heard about Spiderman, I was so happy this movie was being made.
Scahffrillas: "Let's just get this all over with so we can talk about Spider-verse again" Also Schaffrillas: *Talks about Surf's Up 2 for five minutes out of a fifty-four minute video*
@@fanofyoshi2238 that's subjective, it was a forgettable terrible movie I'll never see again, but the original I would've rewatched at least a few more times if the second movie hadn't left such a bad taste in my mouth. Your statement is kinda redundant
For me I would say Surf’s Up is at the top of what Sony has ever made from one scene. The scene where they ride waves and the voice overs of surfers talking about the feeling of being in a tube brings me to tears every time. No other movie has ever done this to me about a thing I don’t know or care much about. Yet it makes me feel like surfing is the only important thing in the world.
i just watched it today after years of thinking about how dumb i thought it was as a kid. my dad loves surfs up and i knew that going into it but was blown away by how much of it's charm i had forgotten about. holy fuck it's amazing. its beautiful and surprisingly hilarious. the reality documentary works really makes it shine. also almost none of the movie feels like filler, they use the time wisely and don't drag on past it's due time. the scene of big z and cody carving the surfboard is something I've been quoting for years because of my dad's love for the scene but only remembered today :)
That scene where they describe riding in the tube is phenomenal. My dad used to surf when he was younger and he's told me that every which way they describe it is exactly that, you can't describe that feeling. You can only feel it and only so many skilled people can ever experience that. The only other scene that I think even comes close is at the end of the movie when Cody is riding in the tube himself while "You Get What You Give" is playing. The sheer glee I get from that scene is probably enough to power a city. I've watched this movie way back before I could even remember, and it's always held a special place in my heart for being a comfort movie and one I can connect to my dad with. And that music they play will always give me goosebumps and make me so happy in a way that only Ghibli movies have achieved for me. I will sing the praises of this movie til the day I die.
I'm honestly just proud of Sony for cleaning up their act. They have a TON of talented people working with them and some seriously good stuff (outside of spider verse and MVM), but I was consistently disappointed with the easy cash grabs they used to make. But with the absolute masterpiece that is spider verse and the amazing MVM, and with spider verse 2 coming out, I'm honestly super excited and I think Sony might be making its way to topping most other animation studios. Edit: mann vs machine
Lately, Sony has really pushed to be a new, more experimental Pixar. Unlike Pixar, they really push their art styles so each of their new films look unique whereas Pixar has a similar style each film.
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs in Israel is actually called “Rain of Falafel”. It was probably changed for marketing reasons since meatballs aren’t very popular in Israel.
@@kikefuentes5191 The title in spanish would be something like "nuvoso con posibilidad de bolas de carne", that doesn't sound good at all, mainly because of the meatballs translation.

Surf's Up is my all time favorite movie. I've seen it countless times. I put it on at work so I have something on in the background to break up the monotony without feeling compelled to spend time watching it. I fall asleep to it sometimes. I bought it on UA-cam so I can watch it on plane rides. Something about it is just pure joy, and Cody's emotions are so infectious. I feel like it was LEAGUES ahead of anything else at the time it came out, and I feel like it hasn't aged a day. I mean, the water in that movie is goregeous! Perfect casting, perfect characters, perfect set pieces, perfect soundtrack, perfect score, perfect movie. I forget where I saw this quote from, but someone said that Surf's Up walked so that Into the Spider-Verse could run; I absolutely agree with that.
In case you're interested, the "Well yes but actually no" scene is from the straight to DVD special, 'So you want to be a Pirate' which came out shortly after the movie.
Im honestly really surprised and proud that sony could clear their name as quick and effectively as they did. Make no mistake, they have an absoloute horrific past, one that'll never be forgotten. but in these past few years, theyve cleaned up their act so well and are definately going on the right track! Im really excited for the day that Sony manages to top all the other major western animation studios for their artistic merit, and we'll be able to look back and see how far they've come
To add a real comment here: I totally agree! They're actually slowly becoming one of my favourite studios as of now. I think it was just after 2017 when it all came crumbling and the studio became notorious for their lack of quality is when they realised that they could do better. It's kind of insane how well they've adapted and been consistently been bringing out banger after banger with real, genuine quality to surpass Disney and all the other burnt out companies. We're getting Sony in its peak and I've never been happier to get the products of a studio at their creative high point :)
The "Well, yes, but actually no" is in the CD Extra Disk called "So You Want to Be a Pirate!", in which Pirate Captain hosts a talk show about being a pirate

Honestly the fact that four of their last five films are in the Top 10 is really a testament to how much Sony has turned around their Animation Department. They're honestly killing it. And honestly all five of their last five are in my personal Top 10. I like Wish Dragon a bit more that Schaf clearly did. It's honestly higher than Vivo for me.
my opinion on wish dragon has shifted violently but it's "a 8/10 movie on its own but a high 6/10 considering it's copying Aladdin" and yes it's not a total ripoff but its experience is still impacted by how it's story and tone are so similar
It goes without sayings. From Animation, to Score, to characters, to Story, it hits it out of the park. It will be remembered as one of the greatest animated movies of all time, at least the greatest animated movie in the 21 Century. From Sony of all studios.
I've watched that once. And I've totally forgotten how much of a gem that movie was, because sadly there aren't many people who talked about it. Definitely gonna rewatch it for this Christmas.
This makes me so happy. My family watches it every Christmas Eve before we open presents and it makes me so happy other people have the same tradition and love the movie as much as I do. I love this. We even quote some one liners year round(there’s always time for a bow and sometimes I make my mom laugh when I randomly start singing silent night backwards :))
Many people are saying they like no way home more than Spiderverse. I'm genuinely excited to see just how good it must be to make people feel that way.
I remember the only thing that really annoyed me about Spiderverse was not the movie itself but the behind the scenes video footage I watched afterwards in which I promptly began to roll my eyes a lot and ended up shutting it off from its near endless virtue signaling. There's a certain point where you hear the same line about how proud they are to have picked a minority/woman character to be Spiderman for once that it becomes obnoxious.
There were some people in my family who found the pig a little too campy for their tastes, which I understand. It didn't ruin anything for me. I still adore every aspect of the film, but I can see where that was a little much for some viewers.
so glad Arthur Cristmas wasnt low on the list. Me and my little brother have nearly the entire movie memorized and watch it every year around xmas. GrandSanta is honestly the best character and Steves character arc was amazing. As Schafrillas said, watching the jolly man himself be imperfect was pretty great, and honestly the whole idea of the Santas fighting over titles was hilarious. Arthur Cristmas is definitely worth watching for those of you who havent seen it.

One thing I love abt The Mitchells VS The Machines is that they don't choose a side with technology is good or it's bad they show the good and bad of both sides and let the audience decide. Edit: to fix spelling errors
yeah. I found the movie to be pretty good but not great, but that was one of the things that stood out to me. A lot of modern movies tend to get really preachy when they're talking about technology and I really appreciate the more nuanced view from this one
I assumed it would be one of those movies when I first saw it advertised and never gave it another thought. Now I should really give it a try. In fact I think it be very healthy to watch with my family, perhaps it'll give them a reality check.
I have nostalgia for those dances. We never even had Just Dance, we would just watch recordings of it on my Mom’s computer and dance in front of it. Those were our favorites. Good times.
Because the Emoji Movie is a *fundraiser* for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and considering the amount of success and an *Oscar for Best Animated Picture* for the latter, it worked!
Also, the “well yes but actually no” meme comes from the short that was released along side the Pirates! Band of Misfits, but it is misquoted. He actually says “good guess but actually no” which is often misheard as “well yes but actually no”

Cool fact about Spiderverse. They animated Miles on 2s for the beginning of the film as he was learning his skills, which is why he seems a bit choppier then the older spiderman, who is animated on every frame. Later in the film as he grows in his role as spiderman, he gets animated on every frame as well. They talked about it on VFX artists react.
Speaking of that, in the Across the Spiderverse preview it looks like Miles has been animated on 2s again at least for the scene with Gwen. Which may Signify that he has an arc with how he's being animated. Just a nice touch.
The terribly ironic thing about The Star is that there an infinitely better short film about a donkey seeing the birth of Christ, and it’s called The Small One (1979), directed by Don Bluth for Disney before he left the company shortly after making it. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the first movie I remember watching as a kid that represented the girl wearing glasses as the "prettier" version of her, and as a little girl wearing glasses, that really meant a whole lot to me. I still remember that striking a chord with me as a kid.
I know, right? Sam does look so much better when she embraces her geeky side, as well as infinitely more relaxed and happy. :)
I think glasses are adorable and part of me thinks I'll be fine when my eyes inevitably stop working (needing glasses runs in the family) because I just think wearing glasses would be an interesting new look for me
OK BUT LIKE SINCE WHEN DID PEOPLE REALIZE THAT GLASSES LOOK NICE
Finally, a movie with good taste. Glasses make people prettier.

I like the scene where they keep repeating Cody getting knocked out by the wave.
Fr Surf's Up strikes this super weird emotional chord with me despite it being such a clumsy excuse for a movie
And the movie is super funny as well. Listening to Shia LaBeouf scream when the wave hits on rewind was hilarious.

I liked this joke not because of Big Z pissing on Cody, but Cody's scream is just golden.

I totally agree!
