Agree, many British productions of novel adaptations are simply superb. Disagree however with cinematography in this movie: the makers used the dull recipe of the 90s for dramas/thrillers etc: "Just tint everything blue and green, hopefully everybody will mistake it for atmosphere (as opposed to a lack of cinematographic ideas). It was ok for the first movies, but then got oh so dull. Maybe - fortunately - you haven't watched enough of this type to bore you yet. - Otherwise yes, very enjoyable to watch!

After just ending this movie,I feel sad for those two, who seemed to have a bonding so deep, that they choose to share their moment of death together.
This story is about love and hate, with bitterness, and hearts torn apart, leading to more of the same. Hot heads, and cold hearts.
The ambiance, the costumes, the light of candles, all scenery is beautiful. I always love mills with large wheels turning by the power of water. That sailing ship was marvellous, I enjoyed watching a world, in a time for which I feel a special longing. 🙏

Philip Wakem, the man who had nothing, and yet lost everything, to two fathers' hostility, a brother's ego and the love of his life's inconsistency. Anyone who hasn't read the book must read the entirety of Philip's last letter to Maggie before she died, it still makes me tear up. He truly lived on nothing but hope. What a beautiful story.

That's what bitterness and hate can do. Kills and destroys life. A foolishness. Forgiveness is best. Learn from the past , live in the present but plan for the future. They did neither. Self centeredness is what this movie was about for the Telliver family. Sad. They learned this from the unforgiving father's bitterness.

    • @tobiMelka
      @tobiMelka 2 місяці тому

Rubbish... they both, Maggie and Tom, forgave each other before they died... and that's what counts ❤ Too many people are passing away with unresolved issues and long-lasting hatred while these two had managed to free themselves from it all, no matter how sad their earthly end was... the story is not a spiritual tragedy... rather its opposite ❤‍🔥👌

One of them being self worth/ pride/ self esteem and a sense of belonging to oneself when there was and is nothing / no one else to trust and look forward to or fallback FOR ( not on ) AND THIS IS WHAT WE CARRY WITH US AFTER THE LAST BREATH HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM US !

I have seen that many are mentioning here the name George Eliot, the author of the book the movie was made after. Are students in the American schools told that George Eliot was actually a woman? It is a dark story, but we can learn a lot about the value of not judging and criticising others. How else do we gauge our behaviour and what is perceived to be right and wrong, if not by watching and reading these classics? So many viewers personalise these situations instead of seeing them objectively. What really surprises me is how poorly their opinions are expressed and how bad their spelling is. Perhaps this movie is unappealing to those who had basic education only. There are comparisons to be made with other dark stories which confirm our own societal norms, but reacting emotionally prevents this from happening.
We don’t have to enjoy the story in order to learn from it.

Tom was an unbelievably great character who tried to do everything right by everyone. Even better than Phillip and Lucy. Maggie was so selfish and careless throughout the novel.

Maggie was not selfish. The novel portrayed how different people values different things in life and what they hold dear. Tom and Maggie had different ways and perspectives of understanding the world. Ofcourse Tom led a tough life and so did Maggie.
It was infact Elliot's brilliance in expressing how different circumstances make people behave differently according to the values they hold.

WTH ? Did I doze off for a moment? I guess it should have been obvious at 1:13. and 1:18. Still, I really didn't see it until 1:43. Poor Philip--"Has something happened. You look so well." Tom called her on her character flaws--"You're always in extremes. You've no self command." All in all, A FANTASTIC STORY.

What happens at the very end?
Can’t watch past Tom using the hoist to come down to Maggie in the boat. The ominous music throughout the movie was too much for me. Lived in constant expectation of something terrible happening

The rope came undone from the hoist, Tom fell in the water and got tangled in the rope, Maggie jumped in to save him to no avail. They both drowned. The end. 🙄

@@lj8945 Sounds like the author had a print deadline to meet and so just killed them both off. Totally out of keeping with the bulk of the story and a highly unsatisfactory ending

@@susettemclachlan8765 No, I think the darker "romantics" of the 19th century loved doing this kind of ending. =/
