I was 18 when I married a man 12 years older than me. He was just like this man, controlling and odious in every way. His libido was off the charts bad and I gave birth to two babies 14 months apart. I grew to hate this so called 'Christian' man and after 17 years of marriage I grew up and liberated myself from him. He quickly remarried another woman but she was a large woman and I hope the tables were turned on him and that she was the overbearing and controlling one. He dug his grave with his piggish appetite and died several years ago from heart problems. I made a vow to myself never to marry again and have lived half my age single. Women should be careful who they marry and make the right decisions in their young life. It will cost them dearly in the end.

I researched the real story. The man was old. He had illness and losing his teeth. Was in constant pain. He's the one asked dr. for the chloroform. According to autopsy he only had it in stomach intestines which indicated that he committed suicide. There were no burns in throat or esophagus. That's probably why she was acquitted.

When I was a young high school student, I was shocked when our President Reagan was shot by John Hinckley and he claimed it was for Jodie!! I thought that was extremely stupid of him, and why would she care about that, anyway? I’m sure that Jodie Foster was glad President Reagan wasn’t killed, but involving the POTUS in a crush on a young movie star! …How thoroughly ridiculous!! I also lived through some horrifying abuse-physical, emotional, etc. and was even surreptitiously drugged and poisoned . This happened when I was going to leave him as a result of the abuse. He took it underground, made it covert by drugging and poisoning me-That makes it even worse when you can’t see it coming, respond, and defend yourself. Being poisoned is by far the worst form of abuse. By FAR. To be that violently, inexplicably ill is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I’d rather suffer abuse of any kind, or even be shot or stabbed than poisoned even once, let alone repeatedly. It’s horrifying to me how many people commenting on this video just casually overlook the fact that she repeatedly poisoned him, eventually taking his life. Yes, he was abusive and no one should ever have to go through that. Ever. But slowly poisoning someone to death is an entirely different level of evil.

Right or wrong, it was how the world lived. True love was rare. They were servants in their own homes and only valued as potential child-bearers. There were many women consigned to fates far worse than hers.
Not historically accurate. Many women were running their husbands estates and kept the books. Some also inherited if no male heir. Saying they were cattle is blowing things out of proportion. Also there were laws against domestic abuse and peers pressure. The problem is that things were more taboo.

My God, I thought she was awful! He wasn't perfect, and he led her to believe that she had killed his brother and hid his letters to her, but he wasn't THAT bad! Not so bad as to deserve all of that.
A sad, controversial account. Not too many details are given to draw to an acqurate conclusion. Victoria seems to have been a lonely girl, very beautiful or attractive - apparently -, who dreamt of freedom and happiness beyond the environment of obligation and obedience she had been raised in. By accepting to be wed she saw hope, but from the beginning she did not like or love what this man offered her. She was eager to fall in love, for she did not hesitate to seek the company of the brother and the priest. She was young, fearful and maybe even a little bitter. Had Oliver been "an abusive man" she wouldn't have been able to do what she did. Oliver was evidently uneducated and greedy - affected by avarice -, but I dare to say he was hoping to find love in his chosen wife. He had needs of his own, which didn't allow him to give more. His actions were according to his society: restrictive. Yet, Victoria was evil. The way Oliver found comfort in Victoria's talk and presence shows that he had been seduced by her from the beginning. He didn't want to hurt or harm her, he just didn't know how to treat her better. I believe that her relationship to the priest and the assurance of the brother's affections gave her the strength she needed to decide to do what she did. She could only think about her own happiness and this contributed to create the unhappiness of both, hers and Oliver's. Oliver understood he had lost control over his own life, but he was a troubled man who got the opposite of what he was looking for. A cautionary tale for men. A pretty face isn't always the facade of an angel alone. Many blessings. Thanks for the posting.

I'm a Boomer. I thought the movie oddly strung together and not very entertaining. Perhaps the characters weren't fully developed. Most of the scenes just had people standing around with stony faces attempting to indicate some sort of overwhelming life moment...which ended up being everyone standing around with a stony face.

Then there's the 20+ year age gap and the twisted obsession of the "husband" (father) for the naive girl, spying on her. He wanted his child back in his life, and this "marriage" (adoption) satisfied his curiosity. That's my take on it. People are strange, and incest is as commonplace now as then, perhaps even more so back when women had few rights, and no access to social workers or legal help, or youtube, and such dreadful intimate revelations were not discussed in polite society. There was a tv series called "Mistral's Daughter" on the subject of an father's unnatural lust for his daughter, made in 1984. "Mesmerized" came out in 1985.
Only at given times, when they are in love and then mostly to have children. Never in human history women and men were together as nowadays. Married men worked with men, married women with women. Men dealt with men, women dealt with women. A man would sometimes help a woman and viceversa, but friendships between women and men were never not at all tolerated as they are nowadays. Orthodox saints also say marriage is not happiness but martyrdom. Why? Because men and women are so far apart.
This was a good movie. I read many of the comments and it certainly keeps the conversation going. I love movies almost indiscriminately. In most movies I find something to like/love. In this case I loved the two biggest actors and I have no criticisms of them. Now as for the comments many viewers missed the mark. Thank you for this upload.
This is based on a true crime that happened in 1886, London. The UA-cam channel "They Got Away with Murder" featured it: "A Poisoning in Pimlico" was the name of the video. The actual story is fascinating!

Now I know why - the actual story is so different from the movie and where it put (at least the moral) blame that I didn't remember them as similar. So I guess Hollywood /Foster put their own perspective on it, which makes sense in the context if the movie story and her sympathetic figure. One has to realize that this was a time when women had no rights. They were bought and sold like furniture or livestock. They were completely at man's disposal. Right or wrong, it was how the world lived. True love was rare. They were servants in their own homes and only valued as potential child-bearers. There were many women consigned to fates far worse than hers.
Not historically accurate. Many women were running their husbands estates and kept the books. Some also inherited if no male heir. Saying they were cattle is blowing things out of proportion. Also there were laws against domestic abuse and peers pressure. The problem is that things were more taboo.
Nonsense, most were partners as one needed all hands to survive, each had their own responsibilities.

My God, I thought she was awful! He wasn't perfect, and he led her to believe that she had killed his brother and hid his letters to her, but he wasn't THAT bad! Not so bad as to deserve all of that.

Not too many details are given to draw to an acqurate conclusion.
Victoria seems to have been a lonely girl, very beautiful or attractive - apparently -, who dreamt of freedom and happiness beyond the environment of obligation and obedience she had been raised in. By accepting to be wed she saw hope, but from the beginning she did not like or love what this man offered her. She was eager to fall in love, for she did not hesitate to seek the company of the brother and the priest. She was young, fearful and maybe even a little bitter.
Had Oliver been "an abusive man" she wouldn't have been able to do what she did. Oliver was evidently uneducated and greedy - affected by avarice -, but I dare to say he was hoping to find love in his chosen wife. He had needs of his own, which didn't allow him to give more. His actions were according to his society: restrictive. Yet, Victoria was evil.
The way Oliver found comfort in Victoria's talk and presence shows that he had been seduced by her from the beginning. He didn't want to hurt or harm her, he just didn't know how to treat her better.
I believe that her relationship to the priest and the assurance of the brother's affections gave her the strength she needed to decide to do what she did. She could only think about her own happiness and this contributed to create the unhappiness of both, hers and Oliver's.
Oliver understood he had lost control over his own life, but he was a troubled man who got the opposite of what he was looking for.
A cautionary tale for men. A pretty face isn't always the facade of an angel alone.

I'm a Boomer. I thought the movie oddly strung together and not very entertaining. Perhaps the characters weren't fully developed. Most of the scenes just had people standing around with stony faces attempting to indicate some sort of overwhelming life moment...which ended up being everyone standing around with a stony face.

Why did he want to many her in particular? Was she his daughter who had been placed in the orphanage 18 years prior? And the baby she had that died, a product of incest with her father unbeknownst to her? Unanswered questions. Creepy.

Then there's the 20+ year age gap and the twisted obsession of the "husband" (father) for the naive girl, spying on her. He wanted his child back in his life, and this "marriage" (adoption) satisfied his curiosity. That's my take on it. People are strange, and incest is as commonplace now as then, perhaps even more so back when women had few rights, and no access to social workers or legal help, or youtube, and such dreadful intimate revelations were not discussed in polite society. There was a tv series called "Mistral's Daughter" on the subject of an father's unnatural lust for his daughter, made in 1984. "Mesmerized" came out in 1985.

This was a good movie. I read many of the comments and it certainly keeps the conversation going. I love movies almost indiscriminately. In most movies I find something to like/love. In this case I loved the two biggest actors and I have no criticisms of them. Now as for the comments many viewers missed the mark. Thank you for this upload.

This is based on a true crime that happened in 1886, London. The UA-cam channel "They Got Away with Murder" featured it: "A Poisoning in Pimlico" was the name of the video. The actual story is fascinating!
An excellent UA-cam channel by the way "They got away with murder" by Mark J. Maguire, so glad you mention it. All the cases he reviews are fascinating because of his reasearch, reasoning and masterful narration.
Janet, "PS": I know looked at the "Poisoning in Pimlico" once more, because I couldn't recall a similar story on the channel "They got away with murder". Now I know why - the actual story is so different from the movie and where it put (at least the moral) blame that I didn't remember them as similar. So I guess Hollywood /Foster put their own perspective on it, which makes sense in the context if the movie story and her sympathetic figure. Just that it doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the facts. But again, thank you for making the link!
