It doesn't sit flush with the back of the control panel, leaving a 5mm gap in the middle. Do you have a suggestion to fix this issue? I worry about dirt entering the battery compartment.
Thank you for the nice comment! The battery compartment is very easy to missallign when putting it back on. If the angle is wrong, the narrow end bumps the main shaft and the tracks don't align properly. Make doubly sure the batteries are securely in place and not sticking up and slide the cover back and forth a few times to settle it into position. If this doesn't work, there may be something in the tracks or it may be warped in some way. If it's the latter, I would speak with whomever you bought the machine from. Hope that helps 😃😎👍🏻
@@DTEKTSUSSEX thank you for the swift reply! I'll give it another look in the morning. I already followed your suggestion and ordered a little raincoat for the console as well as a large headphone jack. Thank you so much and happy hunting! You got yourself a new sub.

First of all, just to say I enjoy your style of explaining things and dry humour, super. Can I ask advice please? After watching your video on the Nel and ace 250, I bought a nel tornado last week, sadly from overseas as UK was sold out. The coil arrived yesterday, but from the start there are issues. The coil is giving constant readings, even when put towards the sky!! I have followed the advice on your video, by resetting etc, even when sensitivity down to only 2 bars, I am still getting false readings . Any advice welcomed. (The retail shop I purchased from has not replied to my emails)
Hi Dan! Thanks for the nice feedback! Much appreciated! In terms of the coil, it sounds like you're doing the right things to resolve the issue. Couple other things to try: Make sure you've turned data and WIFI off of your mobile and you're not near any electrical wires/pylons/wireless routers etc. The NEL is much more sensitive than the stock coil and could be affected by these things or similar. The only other thing to try would be to unplug it and wrap it round the stem in the opposite direction. I've not noticed a difference with this myself but some people swear it changes things so can't hurt to try. Make sure to do another reset once you've done this. Otherwise, I'm scratching my head. May simply be a faulty unit - if so, I hope you can get through to the vendor soon. If not, maybe try contacting NEL directly. I've heard their service is pretty good. Good luck, mate! 😃😎👍🏻
Thanks Own one. In line hdphone volume control is handy till the cat chewed up the wire. Adapting to the ground with sensitivity is only control I guess. If I could mount it on a plastic turning rim instead of me swinging it my coverage increased on flatlands? I don't like finding garbage or lost items so I'll only go remote locations now.
Just about any cheap wireless mic system found on Amazon can be used as an adaptor to solve that headphone cable problem. I use an Avantree TC240 that works perfectly. You'll need a system that has a mic input on the transmitter side, and a headphone option on the receiver. A little Velcro and Bob's your uncle.
They should be supplied with the coil cover when new. Speak with your favourite metal detecting shop. If they sold it to you without a cover they should give you one. Otherwise, you can buy them aftermarket. Just search Garrett Ace 250 coil cover 😃😎👍
My ACE250 here in N.Y. is set for only coins and it picks up steel screws and rusted bolts, several inches below the coil. What's going on? Do I need a different detector? The unit tests silent when testing separate steel parts.
The Ace 250 is a good basic machine but it sounds like you need something with more adjustability. Have a look at the Nokta Simplex. I upgraded from the Ace 250 to the Simplex and my finds rate increased ten fold. Much more adjustable and great in all areas. Easy to use but powerful. I have a lot of videos on the channel with the Simplex. Check out the playlist 😊👍
Hi Adam. Absolutely superb instruction and delivery of it. I am a beginner and currently looking to buy my first Device in the coming few days. I know you're a big fan of the Nokta Simplex+. What is your opinion of the Garrett 400i? I was given a 200i as a gift 2 weeks ago but think I will outgrow it in weeks so I am selling it to buy either a 400i or Nokta Simplex+ . I think I am leaning more to the 400i as it seems alot more user-friendly and less complicated but I could be guilty of over analysing all the info available on UA-cam Detectorists channels at the moment. I am keen to hear of your opinions on the Garrett 400. Kind regards Ian
Thanks Ian! Really appreciate the comment! If you think you'll outgrow the 200, you'll outgrow the 400 quickly too. Definitely go for the Simplex. It's designed to be dead easy to use from the outset but has some more advanced features and settings you can start using as time goes on so you won't outgrow it. It's also incredibly well made compared to the 400i. Incredibly robust and fully waterproof with rechargeable battery and wireless headphone capability. The performance on the Simplex is closer to a detector 2-3 times the price. You'll 100% find more with it. If it helps, I did a tips and tricks video for the Simplex as well: ua-cam.com/video/G_2jZmUedcQ/v-deo.html A lot of people have found it really helpful 😀 Good luck 😎
@@DTEKTSUSSEX you sir, are an absolute gentleman for taking the time to reply. I did watch your 'Hints and Tricks' vid a few days ago which is how I actually found you as a result from a search about the Nokta. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and your response has tipped the balance in my head in favour of the Nokta. Many many thanks. I really appreciate it
Always a pleasure to help! Let me know if you need any more tips once you have the Simplex in hand. You can message my Facebook page if that's easier 😊
@@DTEKTSUSSEX thank you for the kind offer Adam and would def love to take you up on that most kindest of offers but unfortunately I am a few of the great 'unwashed' in that I am not on any Social Media other than UA-cam! I will be looking to ordering a Nokta early Feb. Kind regards Ian
You have fitted a new coil, where from and how much please, also, does it make a massive difference and would it be better to replace the 250 with a more expensive model, just asking, thanks
Hi Graham. The larger coil is the Nel Tornado. Most metal detecting shops will stock it or be able to get it. I found mine second hand on ebay. Worth shopping around the get a good price. In terms of looking at alternatives, it really depends on your experience and what experience you wish to have. Do you want a lot of control over the machine or simply something you can turn on and go? Since making this video I have moved on to the Nokta Makro range of detectors and can certainly recommend the Simplex+ machine. It's tough, waterproof, rechargeable and very easy to use but with power and features found in machines twice the price. Good luck and happy hunting! 😃😎👍
Hi Joe, Yes, they can do. Generally, the bigger the coil, the deeper you can scan. Double D coils like the Nelson Tornado are good for separating targets that are close together. As with everything it takes some getting used to but well worth the upgrade 😃😎👍
I found that having a volume control on my headphones was a must as the audio output from the Ace 250 is not adjustable and at times gave my eardrums a workout.
Hi Chuck! It'll depend on the type/size of wire and whether there's a charge or frequency etc. running through it. Up to 1 foot, the Garrett with the stock coil 'should' pick up most things. With the Nel Tornado coil it will go down to two feet easily. If the wire is thin, it may struggle and electrical currents etc. can disrupt the electrical field so if you're using it for safety, be aware that you can't be 100% certain.
Hi mate. I'm detecting in my back garden but it keeps picking up all sorts of signals prob chatter as its called, even when it's in the air, I have to set it to 4 just to get it to stop. The garden backs onto a railway cutting would that cause it?? Thanks.
Hi Colin, Yes, the railway is likely to cause chatter on the machine due to the electromagnetic fields running through the live rails. Make sure you do the reset each time to make sure the machine is as properly calibrated as possible but otherwise, taking the sensitivity down is really all you can do. Good luck!! 😃😎👍🏻
Shame that there isnt a hum bucker to remove 50hz from the coil, probably other emi properties too though, in sure garrett would have already tried to eliminate that, cheers Col.
Back again with a new question. Maybe you answered it yourself since you got the Simplex but... How does an ace 250 with the nel tornado attached compare? I know about the simplex being more waterproof but I'm mostly interested in not missing too much stuff in the ground.
The Nel Tornado coil will transform the Ace 250! It takes a bit of getting used to compared with the stock coil but it definitely worth investing in. Just make sure you're used to the machine before you put it on and remember to do the reset when you do. Depth wise...it'll be much deeper than the stock and close to the depth of the Simplex. The coil on the Simplex is smaller so you do lose a bit of coverage. The Simplex is just more advanced in terms of function and on-screen info. Stick with the 250. Learn it. Really get to know it. Get the Nel coil when you're ready and keep going. 😃😎👍🏻
Ok to ask a question? I have the 250 with the standard coil, but I also have the 8.5x11.5 did coil (given to me).. when I attach it to the 250 it constantly bleeps when I move it (when no where near any metal).. is it just a duff coil or am I not doing something correctly? I have the wire clockwise around the stem and taped into place, any info greatly appreciated.
Hi Derek! Always happy to help if I can. Did you do the reset I show in the video? You need to do it whenever you change the coil to recalibrate the machine 😃😎👍
@@DTEKTSUSSEX as you might expect I saw that part of your video just as I posted my comment lol... I will definitely try that tomorrow (no real loss if it doesn't work as I said it was given to me).. I'll reply back to you and let you know... Cheers for getting back so soon. Subbed btw 👍
@@DTEKTSUSSEX hi Adam, just to let you know I reset the 250 as per your video and it works a treat, 3 coins and two bullet cases in 45 minutes! It’s still a bit chattery but I’ll fine tune that over the coming weeks, can’t thank you enough mate, really appreciated!
Fantastic news! Well done on those finds. Just knock the sensitivity down to reduce the chatter or, if it's just low iron tones discriminate those out. Good luck and happy hunting 😊 👍 😀
Hi, Thanks for the comment. Yes, you can do that, however getting a module and headphones that work together without lag can be a little hit and miss, hence not including it in the video. Glad you managed to find a combination that worked! 😃😎👍🏻
No idea...silver ore isn't something we have much of around here. It is an extremely basic, budget machine though. It sounds like you need something with a lot more performance like the Nokta Legend 👍
These are good detectors I thing after market coils improve your detector larger one are nice to have cause I don’t see very much more from some of the even newer ones making much of a difference just use the detector you can afford it’s like wanting a Harley Davidson or comparable to a Honda it’s all about hype with these new detectors will never pay over 800.00 for one
Assuming they're fresh batteries...no. Might be some internal damage perhaps. I'd suggest contacting your local dealer and seeing if they offer a repair service. Otherwise, it might be time to upgrade to something like a Simplex?
Digging junk targets is all part of the hobby. For every nice coin, ring, relic a detectorist will have pulled out countless ring pulls, bottle tops, nails etc. Experience will help you to differentiate a little over time but even the most seasoned expert will generally dig more junk than good stuff. Good discrimination will get rid of most iron targets but you'll still get some...especially if they're rusty. Rusty Iron can come up in the nice, high range where you'd expect silver. All part of the process!
In that case I'd recommend the Nokta Makro Simplex. Nice a simple to use and a large VDI display in the centre. Plus it's waterproof, lightweight, tough as nails and rechargeable! Hope that helps 👍
I don't know if it's just me but I've just watched this whole video waiting for the tips and tricks, I haven't seen any, all I've seen is common sense...
They're perfectly fine on the beach if you set the discrimination and sensitivity correctly to the beach you're on. Each beach is different and it takes time to get the combination right but when you get it, the machine is a beast! 😃😎👍🏻
My brother gave the 250 to me for free since he has a Deus and the Garrett gets no use anymore. Its great for me as a beginner since its so simple yet far from a toy.

Couple other things to try:
Make sure you've turned data and WIFI off of your mobile and you're not near any electrical wires/pylons/wireless routers etc.
Thanks
Own one.
Did you put a cover over your stock coil because mine is open all the way and doesn't have that black thing underneath
Check out the playlist 😊👍
nice review mate :)
Cheers buddy 😀👍🏻😎
Kind regards
Ian
If it helps, I did a tips and tricks video for the Simplex as well: ua-cam.com/video/G_2jZmUedcQ/v-deo.html A lot of people have found it really helpful 😀
Good luck 😎
Kind regards
Ian
Thank you for the video! I was totally not using mine to it's potential.
Many thanks
hello do different coils make a big difference
Hi Joe,
Yes, they can do. Generally, the bigger the coil, the deeper you can scan. Double D coils like the Nelson Tornado are good for separating targets that are close together. As with everything it takes some getting used to but well worth the upgrade 😃😎👍
@@DTEKTSUSSEX cheers dude
Can you turn the volume down on the Garrett Ace 250?
Hi Martin. No, it doesn't have a volume control.
When doing trashy areas use the Sniper coil. You would be surprised at what you find.
Good tip, although I've moved on from the Garrett now 😃😎👍
I found that having a volume control on my headphones was a must as the audio output from the Ace 250 is not adjustable and at times gave my eardrums a workout.
Hello from Lubbock Texas. Home of Buddy Holley
14:58 tried to wipe that bug on the bottom left off my screen.
Me too 😂
I will be looking for a wire maybe 1-2 feet down, will this pick it up?
Thanks.
Hi Colin,
Yes, the railway is likely to cause chatter on the machine due to the electromagnetic fields running through the live rails.
Make sure you do the reset each time to make sure the machine is as properly calibrated as possible but otherwise, taking the sensitivity down is really all you can do.
Good luck!! 😃😎👍🏻
@@DTEKTSUSSEX Many thanks, it's over line here so probably has a wider propagation, thanks for the tips, cheers Col.
Shame that there isnt a hum bucker to remove 50hz from the coil, probably other emi properties too though, in sure garrett would have already tried to eliminate that, cheers Col.
I forgot I had onw ot these, Just dug it out the loft.
I'm certain it'll be that. That's exactly what it does if you don't reset it. Good luck and happy hunting!
You certainly do have a wireless option.
Buy universal aftermarket module and wireless headphones.
Had that setup years ago with my old Ace 350.
Hi,
Thanks for the comment. Yes, you can do that, however getting a module and headphones that work together without lag can be a little hit and miss, hence not including it in the video. Glad you managed to find a combination that worked! 😃😎👍🏻
I’ve got the zlink system on my 250. Good video, very helpful
When will it detect silver ore
No idea...silver ore isn't something we have much of around here.
It is an extremely basic, budget machine though. It sounds like you need something with a lot more performance like the Nokta Legend 👍
These are good detectors I thing after market coils improve your detector larger one are nice to have cause I don’t see very much more from some of the even newer ones making much of a difference just use the detector you can afford it’s like wanting a Harley Davidson or comparable to a Honda it’s all about hype with these new detectors will never pay over 800.00 for one
my garret 250 wont turn on after i put new batteries in any ideas ?
Assuming they're fresh batteries...no. Might be some internal damage perhaps. I'd suggest contacting your local dealer and seeing if they offer a repair service.
Otherwise, it might be time to upgrade to something like a Simplex?
@@DTEKTSUSSEX ok thanks it was just in a cupboard and was working before , maybe just need a new one ,
These days after pandemic there is no more treasure. Many people got basics detector and start they adventure.
Thanks, I will subscribe but is it possible to not have the annoying music in the background please, your voice is very clear, cheers
can't turn the volume down apparently
Correct.
my advice would be to find headphones that have a volume control. the 250 is flippin loud
ses kısabılıyormuyuz ses podu varmı
No, no volume control. Have a look at the Nokta Simplex range instead 👍
How can I avoid all the junk targets? Even when I use discriminate rusty nails and iron still beep...
All part of the process!
is the garret ace 300 similar to the 250?
Essentially, it's the same but you get VDI numbers on the 300i 😃😎👍
@@DTEKTSUSSEX Thanks, im new to metal detecting and this video helped alot.
Glad you found it useful and welcome to this amazing hobby! Good luck and happy hunting 😃😎👍
I've found pound coins to show up on the 5 cents mark.
Hi Brad! Thanks for the comment - that sounds about right to me 😃😎👍🏻
I need to check mine... im sure its a square battery
They're all manufactured with a battery compartment for 4 AA batteries. If yours takes a 9V square battery it will have been modified afterwards 😃😎👍🏻
have an extra detector you could send? Lol. I have an ace 250. I do not like the fact there is no number display and its confusing.
In that case I'd recommend the Nokta Makro Simplex. Nice a simple to use and a large VDI display in the centre.
Plus it's waterproof, lightweight, tough as nails and rechargeable!
Hope that helps 👍
I never reset my coil... that’s why I’m not getting any hits
My best tip is don't metal detect in steel toe cap boots like I did.
🤣😃😎👍
I don't know if it's just me but I've just watched this whole video waiting for the tips and tricks, I haven't seen any, all I've seen is common sense...
There are plenty in there and I've had hundreds of people say this video has helped them immensely. Clearly you know the machine very well 😊👍
They are pretty shit on the beach but i did find an indian rice coin
They're perfectly fine on the beach if you set the discrimination and sensitivity correctly to the beach you're on. Each beach is different and it takes time to get the combination right but when you get it, the machine is a beast! 😃😎👍🏻
the sound-------too anoying, I bailede out
K...
My brother gave the 250 to me for free since he has a Deus and the Garrett gets no use anymore. Its great for me as a beginner since its so simple yet far from a toy.
