Of the limited 'Rolamatics' range offered by Matchbox between 1972 and 1985, the generically named 'Police Patrol' was by far and away my favourite. Clearly based on a Range Rover Classic, the Rolamatics feature was a rotating beacon which moved with the turning of the rear wheels via a system of cogs. These weren't particularly well disguised behind the opaque window piece. Early models were indeed badged as police vehicles, though variations included ambulances, site engineers and latterly Dakar Rally security like mine. The 20E was introduced in 1975 and ran until 1984 with my beige model from either 1983 or 1984.
The 20E I had didn't have a working beacon. It just stayed static whichever way you turned the rear wheels, so that was my first fix. I'm not even sure how I achieved it but by taking it apart and putting it back together it seemed to work just fine afterwards! I sourced the superb reproduction decals from Black Square Decals and gave it a coat of delicious beige, teamed with a black base and grille.
While it carried its generic Police Patrol name on its base throughout production, it did receive the Range Rover title on boxes following Universal Toys' 1983 takeover of the Matchbox brand. The original and now renamed Range Rover Classic was introduced in 1970 and set new standards for its off-roading capabilities. It lasted in production through to 1996 and even had a marketing change of direction in 1984 when it was given a touch of luxury with leather upholstery and walnut trim among other features. It even remained in production for two years alongside its P38A successor which had arrived in 1994.

It looks nice! You did a Good Job Restoring it.
Super cool restoration. Great job as well
Great restoration, brother.
Nice as always!
Super restoration! My brother was given the white Police version and I remember getting a Corgi high top Range Rover given to me the same day 🙂
Great job. This car was my very first re build 5 years ago. Learned a lot!
Good job as always, only I’d like it if you gave it headlights
Still a good job
A successful transformation of this model. It looks great. Good job 👌
I had the with police car with the red beacon as a child. That looks so clean after your restoration Jason.
Great job Jason 👍🏻 and I have the white police version since I was a kid
yes i like your work and this looks less dull then the white police version i have...
Nice restoration, details and paint job 👌 👍
I had the same car in my childhood, but it was white with blue signal on top
Nice job as always, mine is a white car with the police sticker
It being British and all I figured this model had a blue light first. I have a Police one with blue light and one with a yellow light. I have the Japanese Police one too.
Very nice!
Muy bonito. Buen trabajo!😍🇪🇦
Y’know whats weird? I watched this video this morning, and i just went to a vintage store. I like looking through this tub of old cars they have, and literally right at the top, in mostly pristine condition, is literally the dakar ralley range rover. I bought it just because of the stupid coincidence.
Good find, best livery too!
Incredible restoration 😎
Where did you get your reproduction stickers from? I've been looking for some for my restorations but I can't find any
These are from Black Square Decals - link in the description
Thank you 🙂
