  • Restoring a Lesney Matchbox No. 37A Karrier Bantam 2 Ton, in the Matchbox range from 1957 until 1960.
There was a significant casting variation on this 1957-1960 Matchbox 37A Karrier Bantam 2 Ton. The Coca-Cola branded truck could be found with an uneven load of crates on the back like mine. However, following difficulties ejecting castings from the die, Lesney opted to remove these odd cases and have even steps on both sides. I much prefer this 'random' layout over the even load.
In 1960 the casting was upgraded with the 37B which utilised the same Coca-Cola banners and carried forwarded the even crate load, but it now had a black baseplate fitted. It also had a bit more intricate detailing to the headboard and front grille. In all, the 37A and B spanned nine years as it was eventually replaced in 1966.
My example had been repainted in a collection of different paints by a previous owner, but consisting of just one piece of cast metal, two axles and four wheels, it was a relatively straightforward dismantling and reassembling process. That made for an incredibly rapid restoration video.
The Bantam was produced by Karrier starting in the 1930s. Karrier was acquired by Commer in 1934 and formed part of The Rootes Group, taken over themselves by Chrysler in 1967. The Bantam was a short cab-over-engine truck designed for urban deliveries and municipal services. This model is based on an F-series Bantam, first introduced in 1948. These continued in production until the 1970s thought the Karrier name was dropped in 1979 in rationalisation efforts.

Like you, I prefer the more detailed and random placement of the bottle crates on the older version of this truck. I also like the 20 minute versions of your videos that include a detailed history of the actual vehicle as well as your hard work in bringing these models back to life. Cheers from an appreciative viewer in Japan!

I have two versions of this including the staggered load and the regular load. I found them both fun to restore.
The staggered load is more realistic, growing up in the era when everything was in plastic crates, as I did. But they have equal appeal to me. They represent happier days.

I have all three versions of this model, and I prefer this version of the casting the most. Nice work on restoring it, Jason! It's a simple restoration, but it is very sweet!

The model looks really good and I like the new paint and decals. Between the two trucks I like the simpler one with the random cases of Coke. Thanks for sharing this.

nicely done. :) I prefer the older one, the random placement of the crates makes it look more "alive".
short videos are nice, too. you could reserve the longer videos to customs, or models that need more repair, maybe.

Unusual colour mustard yellow associated with Coca-Cola but still a good repaint.

Have you ever done larger models like the dinky Lamborghini Marzal #189? Now that’s a wonderful project to do 😊

How do you manage to keep the Tamiya primer from not chipping off the metal? I find it quite difficult to stop this from happening.

Are you polishing it? Agitating the surface with that rough polishing gives it more surface area to adhere to

as they said. you need to remove the greyish, smooth surface of zinc oxide; not many paints stick to that, and even the special ones don't do it reliably. also, carefully degreasing it before primering it helps a lot.
