Well, MotorWeek, you did it again. You brought back some great memories. I was 21 back in 2003. I wanted both of these cars so bad. I remember going to the Mitsubishi and Subaru dealers drooling over these. I landed on the Evo only because it came with a radio lol. One issue was that every dealer in my area had $10k markups (Sounds familiar) on both, and no dealer would let you test drive these. I waited a few months, and I was able to make a deal at sticker for a black one coming right off of the truck. This was the most exciting time of my life. I immediately started modifying the Evo and hit 75-80 for some 1/4-mile runs. Many years, and 30+ cars later, the Evo is still one of my favorite cars! Back when you actually had to drive a car, a true experience. I still have my owner's manual and window sticker 🙂 Thanks again MotorWeek!!

These were good times. Cars today just don't have the outside the box quirkiness and passion that made cars like this so much fun. I remember seeing an STI for the first time in 2003 at an autocross. It was early, still dark out. When those HID lights came on and slowly started to brighten... well I finally got an 06 STI in 2011 then proceeded to improve it (mostly suspension and reliability mods). I love the car! It has such a unique driving experience. Powering out of a corner is where this car really shines. I do have an affinity for the EVO too especially the 6.5 TME.

The STI's could clobber the mustangs in pretty much every performance metric from 2004 all the way to 2011 until the coyote 5.0 came with over 400 horsepower stock. It took ford to build a mustang GT with 100+ more horsepower than the 2.5 boxer 4 banger to out accelerate it the STI. That was a loooong 7 years for mustang GT owners sharing the streets and tracks with STI's. STI's changed the game back then and now are instant collectibles. AMAZING machines.
This vid brings back nostalgia and good feels. What a great time for cars then, every manufacturer was putting out little oddball rockets that were attainable.
Crazy that the STI had 300HP back in 2004. Also crazy that my 2019 STI has the same engine as the 2004 model. The 2.5L isn't known for reliability but it's a modern day classic engine and the STI is an amazing drivers car. Sad to see Subaru discontinue the WRX STI.
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 Yes the new STI would probably have been out of the price range of their target market. Many are saying they don't want to see the new generation WRX STI be electric but I would bet that Subaru is probably already working on it.
I bought an 04 STi new. Personally modded with FP green, meth, and suspension bits for track days. Started out with the UTEC and later romraider. Put down close to 400 whp and had no engine problems for 100k miles when I then sold it. Engine problems were mostly from bad tunes as personally tuning your car was the new hot thing. Lots of people getting greedy and being stupid causing nuked ring lands and so forth.
@@FirstLast-we8cb Yes very true although my dealership just warned me about oil starvation and told me to get an oil change every 3500 miles. i won’t tune my STI, its quick enough for me and will only lead to problems.
I remember when these cars came out very well. Was never a fan of the styling having owned FC turbo and FD RX-7s along with being a huge fan of all of the other 90s Japanese halos but the performance was undeniable. I remember reading that the Evo was running 19 psi from the factory with a warranty and it blew my mind. Add to that the practicality of four doors and seats and the ability to tune without hitting the rollers. Awesome cars indeed.
Recently sat in an yellow low mile EVO, the interior hasn’t aged well. The steering wheel had begun to pull away from itself, the gauges were tiny and the doors felt lighter and cheaper than early miata doors. Shifter was bolt action though and the seats were outstanding.
I am In my early 30s currently drive a V8 Lexus IS500 Launch Edition. But I've owned a 06' EVO I got brand new. 19' STI & 21' STI. When this episode came out I was 14 years old.

I remember when I was 6 i really liked the evo and the WRX so much that a friend of my dad let me sit in he's WRX and i was so happy that day and that car had a place in my heart
This brings back some memories. I wanted a Subaru STI when they came to America, but at the time I was 17 so it was out of the question. Back then the EVO vs. STI battle was like the Mustang vs. Camaro battle of the mid 2000’s.
I bought the Evo 8 7 years ago love love love it! The deciding video was on top gear vs the Lambo. Now I'm glad I bought the Evo over sti because the Evo is worth way more then same year sti also I see 100s of sti you never see evos anymore
I remember back in the day when these hit the streets, they were slaying at the time svt cobras, corvettes, Porsches, 360 Ferrari Modenas etc. When you saw one in your mirror pulling up, u knew u weren't gonna win. They lost that advantage over the decades, they never kept up with modern day hp and tq. Now a modern day camry can walk em stock for stock.
yes and its sad tbh. all they had to do was give it more power and keep up with the competition. subaru and mitsu just never did. cars barely gained any hp. the new p25 sti is the only one that got a respectable HP gain, but its limited and over 500k.
@@MaqsVids To the average driver the Evo absolutely SUCKS to daily. She's temperamental as hell, doesn't like to behave when the a/c is on, suspension is unforgiving, all kinds of reasons... but all of those reasons make it endearing AF and the perfect daily for me (even after a full build).
A friend sent me this. It's fun going back in time. I'm still driving my 04 Evo. Tuned by WORKS vit has a good deal more power in it's rebuilt 4G63T engine. Garaged and cared for all it's life, it still looks and drives like new but doesn't look like the typical JDM , as it's mostly stock with different 18" forged aluminum wheel and a tasteful carbon fiber lip spoiler up from. It's like driving a celebrity here in Arizona. I'm constantly bombarded with lookers and buyers. I've been offered nearly double what I paid for it new, but I'm not parting with it anytime soon!
I had a 96 trans am in 2004. I remember that these were the cars you didn't want to run into on the street. But as you can see by the 1/4 time, they could have been taken from a roll easier than from a dig.
I respect WRX STIs but man, Evos will always be #1 for me. I remember as a kid I was watching initial D and they introduced Team Emperor, a Lancer Evo racing team. That’s when I fell in love with the Evos. Hell I was even fortunate enough to have a 2013 Lancer GT AWC as my first car :)
Those were the days of our lives, where sport cars were real sport cars with exciting rivalries. Unlike nowadays with ugly, heavy huge SUVs without the excitement of people discussing which is more exciting and better at the track.
When the Evo X Final Editions were available I went and looked at one. Was ready to get it and the sales manager stepped in and said no because I was making them honor the internet price they had of 34,500. Disappointed I didn't get it. I could have sold it for what I paid for it. Love Evos.
I too looked at FE's and dealer asking price were over 40 or more at that point for me. But then I recently purchased an evo x when it was at its peak value last year, looking back, I should've just paid the 40. lol
@@TechVerified2K it's absolutely insane. If I would have known that would still be worth that much I would have pushed that manager and forced him to sell it. He was a complete tool though. Basically said "well, you're 21. We don't trust 21 year olds" Nevermind the fact that my credit was a 790, I already had one car note among credit cards that all had on time payments etc.
Funny how my 1999 Camaro Z28/LS1/Automatic did a best of 13.5@106mph. All I did was a muffler delete, cut holes in the bottom of the air intake box, then replaced the top intake lid of the airbox for $30 which had no sort of restrictions or sound silencers like the stock intake box lid. Those two mods literally gave you 10-15 rear wheel horsepower over stock. I have no doubt that the Evo or STI would smoke my Camaro off the line if they were willing to do 6000rpm clutch dumps and risk grenading their whole driveline. In a straight line those rally cars would not win(stock vs stock), but man did they handle and were a lot more fun to drive in the twisties than my Camaro. Also it was way too easy to turn the power up with the STI or EVO, just increase the boost until it blows up in your face.
I currently have a 2015 STI with the classic setup (world rally blue with gold wheels, honestly very different color setup than what I see on the road now, it’s almost unique) but I have the exterior cleanly modified to my liking. the mustang GT back then had 260hp and 302torque i had one a few years ago lol but these stis were so cool to bad they dont make new ones or have updated the old engine to modern standards on the last remaining models. i have a 19 5.0 rn
@@Crazy8ts I like how you're comparing STI to GT. A Cobra Mustang from the 90's would use the little boxer engine as an air pump!
@@bradnimbus4836 90s cobra had 305 HP. Same as the sti. You're thinking of the 2003-2004 Cobra. That was the one people feared back then .
Cool video, crazy to see these cars back in the day brand new
This vid brings back nostalgia and good feels. What a great time for cars then, every manufacturer was putting out little oddball rockets that were attainable.
THIS IS THE ONE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR!
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 yup totally not worth the money in todays car market
@@dr.jiIIaIicecooper2587 Yes the new STI would probably have been out of the price range of their target market. Many are saying they don't want to see the new generation WRX STI be electric but I would bet that Subaru is probably already working on it.
Not that crazy. Subaru haven't innovated since about 2003.
My high school boy racer dreams lived out again lol. I miss those days of tuner cars.
2002-2007 RIP 💐

To be fair, it always felt cheap inside. That's not just due to age.
Bro it's an economy car on steroids what were you expecting?
The steering wheel was meant to be replaced by your favorite MOMO or Sparco by now. I’ll take lighter than a Miata.
You don’t look at the interior when you’re thrashing the nuts off it!
Sounds like its been in the sun, my 05 evo 8 with 83k miles feels like new. Always garage kept.
Growing up I always wanted a Subaru Sti blob eye but ultimately went the Evo 9 route it’s been 5 years and loved every minute of it.
I am In my early 30s currently drive a V8 Lexus IS500 Launch Edition. But I've owned a 06' EVO I got brand new. 19' STI & 21' STI. When this episode came out I was 14 years old.
I remember back when both brands legit made GOD tier cars.... This was that time.
2 of My Favorite Cars, Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. They Both Got There Big Car Star Status, That's Totally Extremely Awesome!!!
Always loved the look of these Lancer EVOs. Some of the best styling to ever come out of Mitsubishi
I'm a Subaru guy but much love to this Evo
What a great duo these cars are. Such badass cars🔥🔥🔥
I bought a new STi back in 2004 and these cars launched a new era of performance
Yup these 2 and also the Dodge SRT4 all came out around the same time. I miss those days.
This is it right here, For you that don't know, these 2 cars right here market the end of an era.
I love motor week, I have watched them since I was a kid
Bought my IX new back in 2006. Still have it today. Evo > STI all day but what a fun rivalry.
Its funny. I have had 2 Evos (03 and 05) and 3 WRX's (03, 04 and 04 STI). And, the Evo's are my all time favorite. But, I prefer to daily the WRX.
Shoot man that performance would turn heads today! In the early 2000’s these definitely must of felt like super compacts to owners.
That STI ran closer to a 13.1, motorweek might have gotten a beaten one

I remember when the Evo wasn’t available in the States that people modified the exterior of their Mirage to look like the 4 & 6 Evo
Unbelievably that's still a 'thing'. You'll find many on YT. We call them Prancer's!
I had a 2000 subi Impreza 2.5 RS.. I love that car
When this aired, I've already had my 2002 Subaru WRX (WRB) for 2 years, and still own it to this day. 🤙
The rivalry we all needed 🔥legendary
Bought my 2005 STi brand new in July of 2004!!
Miles?
I remember battling this kid in high school. He had a STI and I had a fox body mustang. Fun times.
A piece of history, the era of rivalry, a golden time of competition with car manufacturers
Man those where little monsters back then! And still good numbers today! Wow! Almost 20 years already!!
I had a 96 trans am in 2004. I remember that these were the cars you didn't want to run into on the street. But as you can see by the 1/4 time, they could have been taken from a roll easier than from a dig.
you can't drive muscle cars in winter but these you can
EPIC REVIEW THANK YOU MOTORWEEK
I respect WRX STIs but man, Evos will always be #1 for me. I remember as a kid I was watching initial D and they introduced Team Emperor, a Lancer Evo racing team. That’s when I fell in love with the Evos. Hell I was even fortunate enough to have a 2013 Lancer GT AWC as my first car :)
Those were the days of our lives, where sport cars were real sport cars with exciting rivalries. Unlike nowadays with ugly, heavy huge SUVs without the excitement of people discussing which is more exciting and better at the track.
💯
Wanted one of these so bad in high school. Now i got a awd bimmer 6mt.
This is why good competition in the marketplace is so important. At the end of the day, the customer can't go wrong with either choice.
Both are awesome. But I prefer the WRX. Maybe because I’ve been brought up with impreza’s, so I’m a bit biased, but.
I always liked the WRX STi. I just love the rumble from that Boxer engine.
Nice low centre of gravity too.
The rumble is actually made by the asymmetrical exhaust system.

Could not afford to buy one 20 years ago since I was a kid, still cannot afford to buy one after 20 years because of the hefty classic price tag.

I know right. There was a brief time when the prices dropped and you could get a decent one for 10 to 15K. That is not the case now....
I currently have a 2015 STI with the classic setup (world rally blue with gold wheels, honestly very different color setup than what I see on the road now, it’s almost unique) but I have the exterior cleanly modified to my liking. Hope to have it as long as possible. Haven’t had a single issue with it in the 3 years and 30k I’ve put on it

How many miles on it? Wow

Im getting a GR Corolla because i could never get these cars i always wanted an AWD turbo Japanese car. So much heritage and love
The evo was always the better looking car - let's all agree.
The Impreza is easier on the eyes.
The biggest ICONS of the auto industry since the Mustang and Camaro in the 60s
I have a 2020 Type R and if I had to choose. I’m going for the Evo. The main reason why I fell in love with Enkei wheels. So much I bought a set of Enkei for the R.
