Subaru: uses stickers instead of badges on STi Doug: look at this cost cutting! Porsche: uses stickers instead of badges on GT3 Doug: look at this weight saving!
Because Porsche clearly isn’t cost cutting badges on a $100k+ trackday version of a premium car that has badges normally, whereas Subaru clearly is on a car that costs $30k. Sometimes the same actions are genuinely done for different reasons.
Focus Baloney!!! Porsche might use the excuse that they’re saving weight, but that’s a load of crap. They’re saving money. There’s PLENTY OF OTHER PLACES they could’ve cut out on the Porsche to save significantly MORE weight, but they didn’t. The Porsche is still a pig of a car that could easily loose an additional 250 or more pounds without compromising it, WITHOUT resorting to cloth door pulls and stickers for badges.
That's the power of branding, put a Gucci sticker on cheap payless shoes, then they're worth 30x more Premium brands can get away with so much bullshit😂
@@mileskosik472 When I drove my 02 I didn't give a fuck about all of that. Rather put money under the hood and towards suspension compared to a bunch of useless trim shit.
I’m not a car expert, but this car stuck with me. As a kid I’d see one of these maybe once a year and it stayed with you, you never forgot the blue/gold colour way. Iconic.
@Umar yeah same. I love thee 2004 with a java Black Pearl. Wanted one ever since I was a little kid and when I turned 27 I went out and bought myself one. It goes along with my 2019 Crystal Black Pearl sti. Regardless of what people say, they are great cars. Just gotta do it right.
No matter how much criticism it gets from a lot of car enthusiasts, it still turns heads from 90% of road users in 2020 wherever it's driven... Amazing 🏆
Surprisingly, it does! I barely use my 2006 STI, but when I do, there's a big chance someone's gonna roll down their window and praise the car, haha. Never get's old!
This particular car is perhaps my favorite car of all time. 2004, Blue paint, huge wing, huge hood scoop, gold wheels. Wow! Such a cool car. I agree that the gold wheels on the WRX are indeed the best use of gold wheels on any car, ever. But I disagree about the headlights; I love that design.
Ok, I bought one of these new in 2004, and it's still my daily driver 350+K miles later. Still insanely fun to drive, and say what you want about the cheap interior, it doesn't rattle.
My dad bought this new as well and passed it down to me over a year ago. Been his daily driver and mine and nearing 200k miles. Still a blast to drive! Unfortunately, it has some leaks and a rack and pinion that needs fixing and not sure how much longer I'll hold onto it, wish it held a price tag in the 20k's lol. Totally agree that the despite the cheap interior, I don't think twice about it. Also has one hell of a bumpy ride, but that just adds to its quirks. Love this thing, hope the redesign coming up will be awesome.
Is that on the stock engine and tranny? Like any rebuilds needed or anything? I have a B5 S4, but just wondering how the STI is on longevity of major parts.
@@AzathothsAlarmClock You have to realize, car guys are a minority, we do NOT drive the market. If we ever did, do you think they would have ever stopped importing Japanese Sports Cars in the late 90's?? No, which is exactly my point. The Nissan 370Z and Toyota/Subaru/Scion 86/BRZ/FRS, those two cars are the successors to early 90's Japanese Sports car culture you wanted. And if you wanted American Sports cars, then you sir are blind.

There's no need for a metal cover, but you can make the plastic look far nicer -- like basically every other car does. It's especially weird to do *FAKE* metal when the real thing is inches away, so the contrast is obvious.
As an owner for a WRX, i really don't understand the obsession with having the loudest car in existence. I find it very annoying when I'm out and about, especially when it's nice out and I have my windows down. The only people who think loud exhausts are cool are other people with loud exhausts, everyone else thinks they are annoying fuckbags.
@@oshntosh I think a nice audible exhaust is nice, but actually loud just seems unpleasant to me. Everybody will hate you, you'll get tired much more quickly and you can't even get a little bit of rest if your idle is loud aswell
The knob for the headlights angle is not for fog areas. It's for the moment when you have luggage and the body it's not level anymore. That's when you lower your headlights (to see in front and not blind the others)
Also it’s common in Europe for cars to have what’s called fog lights but only on the rear, light that is visible on foggy weather so other drivers can actually distinguish you and not crash into you. In addition here in the balkans for example we have some roads with almost no lights at all, so you have to adjust your headlights upwards to make the oncoming turns more visible, we aim the headlights differently on big open roads with loads of traffick and on roads with zero visibility.
Had the same exact configuration as this one, sadly hit a deer a couple years ago and it was written off. Replaced it with something almost as good. 250 HP, AWD, 4 Doors - a 2014 Toyota Sienna and then sadness ensued.
This car is amazing. At some point in my life I am going to have one of these. So simple yet it works better than anything else. They really focused on how it drives vs how it looks and sells
10:42 the headlight adjuster were used to correct the height of the beam, they don't move as far to "replace" a fog light. In fact fog lenses spread differently from main or high beam
Exactly, you set it to the number of passengers in the car to compensate for the suspension sitting lower. This way your light beam stays where it is intended to. Very common in Europe.
@@dujevideka1230 Well, it is standard in most cars. Maybe not in the US? During the 90's, car manufacturer started to implement automatic headlight adjustment as they began to use xenon lights, so maybe Doug is not aware of it...
You've never been so exited on a review before. You really love this car, it shows. It was the sensation I felt. You missed the STI exhaust note though, absolutely unique
it's because us normal people don't get the chance to even to see the most exotic (let alone, sit or DRIVE one) cars. i.e. most typically bland U.S. cities where something as exotic as a Huracan comes across the street maybe once a year for me at least.
@@emmanuelkumi8299 Is he he also putting the acceleration score on the same scale as Bugatti's? That would make sense to give it a 5 then, other wise 5 would be a really low score considering 0-60 in 5 seconds was absurdly fast for its price at the time.
It's because "normal" people don't use the whole scale. Dudes see an average looking girl, "Omg solid 8!!", yet any average looking person/ average car should be a 5/10. Bell curve is the best standard for these kinda things. Not many 9s and 10s, and same amount of 1s and 2s.
This car is so special to me because I’m born the same year as it (2004). It my dream car and I’m finally old enough to drive. Lamb is and Ferraris are cool but I want one of these
You won't regret it. I own a 2015 STI, had a 2013 WRX, and driving a 2007 STI (my mate's car) was the most fun I've ever had on 4 wheels. To this day I still haven't cornered quicker in another car. That being said, the day to day ride probably gave me scoliosis.

One of the things that makes the '04/'05 STi feel faster than what came after, is the gearing. I owned an '05 and '08 and the gearing difference was very noticeable. Some people didn't like the shorter gearing but on tight-twisty roads or the race track it was *fantastic*. You could pull out of a corner in 3rd like most cars pull in 2nd. Yeah, the shorter gearing hurt the 0-60 (which everyone was obsessed about) and you were almost always working the gearbox, but it really helped make use of the engine's powerband and give it a bit more kick. I still miss my '05 STi...it had numerous improvements over the '04 while still being "raw" and it was just a blast to drive.
The price has been steadily going up for 2 years, google “hagerty bull market 2019” the most recent hagerty magazine mentioned it in its 2020 bull market article.
@bashirsfar3825 I recently saw one for $60,000. Kinda ridiculous if you ask me, this is my dream car but I don't know if I could ever justify 60k plus for one.
It's fine to have problems with a reviewers critique. Everybody has different tastes and experience after all. But y'all should remember Doug reviews these older cars by modern standards and in comparison to exotics, so of course it's going to be lower than you expect. It's over 16 years later. That being said...This car deserves a higher score. 😂
That's about the only thing I don't really understand about Doug's videos, why is he comparing a 2004 car to brand new card? They're obviously not on the same level, they're from a different time with different standards
@@shadowzone2013 Doug seems like a really nice guy but I have a hunch he likes making the videos more than he actually enjoys cars. Oh well, to each their own:-)
Great video, my favourite car from my younger times. Small correction though: at 10:25 it is not about "adjusting your headlights in the fog", but about lowering the beam (the complete headlight mirror unit), when you are carrying passengers on the rear bench and/or heavy load in the trunk. Due to load on the rear suspension, the car sags and tilts upwards, so the next thing is that you will be painfully pointing your headlights into the eyes of the drivers ahead and making them not only temporarily blind, but mad. This especially applies to sedans, combis (wagons) and longer cars, which are more prone to shifting their center of gravity. Such an adjustment, or headlight regulator is a norm in most EU countries and in some (like in mine) it is mandatory to have some sort of manual headlight adjuster in the cabin, an automatic levelling system, or at least a manual peg directly at the bottom of the headlights, to temporarily tilt them down right at their mounts. Doug made the same assumption in his video about Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet (at 20m:50s there). Some of you will surely say, as usual, that it is "blah..blah..blah.." and I should generally "shut up" - but it is actually a serious security hazard, especially in the rain and in foggy, dark winter situations, when you have reflections from the wet road in front.. We should not mislead people, that it is some sort of "foglight replacement" or that you can "lit the road in front of you better". It is not true. But, as usual, it is your right to criticise this comment if - for whatever reason - it is not useful for you, or you simply do not like it. I don't care. Enjoy life.
I would also like to thank you for this comment. Perhaps one could add that this manual height adjustment was/is not allowed for cars with xenon light (at least in Germany, but I think it is a rule for the whole EU). The reason is that the xenon light is so bright that if the height is set incorrectly, oncoming traffic would be very much dazzled. Therefore, cars with xenon light must have (exclusively) automatic height adjustment that adapts to the load condition of the car. This also means that cars with manual height adjustment must not be retrofitted with xenon lamps. About the car: the WRX STI is certainly one of the hottest cars of its time. Thanks for the review.
Thank you very much for pointing this out. This is some crazy misinformation to me, I don't know how he could find such information anywhere. This feels like improvisation really.
@@pierredanel7771 Well, this guy has such outrageous lacks in terms of car industry knowledge that I really cannot believe how he managed to gain this amount of subscribers.
The dial to angle headlights is typically meant to compensate body angle when car is loaded differently (as far as I have seen typically 0 is for driver and front passenger, 1 - 4 passengers, 2 - 4 passengers + loaded trunk, 3 - driver and loaded trunk).
I had an '05 STi. I absolutely loved that car. I didn't mod it, mine was bone stock, but it was so much fun. I autocrossed it and ice raced it on weekends. I wasn't that good of a driver, but it was a blast. It was the best 3 years of owning a car I ever had. I wish I had never sold the thing.
the "fog light replacement" feature is incorrect Doug. it's actually to adjust the beam in case you have high stress on the rear axle (towing, a lot of weight in the trunk) so that the beam doesn't blind upcoming drivers.

@Pipa ObalaI'm Canadian but let me give you the perspective from someone who also lives in a large country. The last longish drive I took was 1100KM and I only stopped 3 times so its important to be able to have somewhere to put an open drink. I also don't even think it would be possible to drink a coffee while driving without a cup holder.
I was going to say that as well. These cars are meant to be light. The newer ones are more like luxury cars and aren't made like the older ones. Older ones are much better
My 04 XT interior is still beautiful. Stitched leather everywhere with a really cool greenish blue thread. Seems like the UV protection on the windows did a real good job until I added tint a couple years ago.
I worked as a porter for a car dealership in the early 2000s and I remember getting an STI in on trade. I LOVED driving it for daily errands and whatnot. To this day, still one of my favorite cars.
Such an iconic car. I've been looking for years to find an unmodified one of these and it's just so difficult, to be honest its practically impossible. Literally every listing ever on these is like "garage kept, great condition, perfect paint, perfect interior, oh and a blown motor and 62 mods-15 grand" lol
Yeah agreed. I originally was shopping for a 2004-2007 STI in Canada but it was so hard to find a clean and non driven winter example. I ended up just buying a 2018 STI brand new to not deal with the modifications, abuse, or rust due to winter driving. However I bet if you have endless years to search you will end up finding a bone stock mint condition for a premium sooner or later =)
First of all its gonna be beat on either way its a sti no grandmas own stis so might as well second of all these cars have terrible weight distribution and there for handle terribly... buy a 335i
100% agreed. I have a black '07 STI with 55K miles, all stock, never modified, from the second owner. It took me three years to find. It'll never leave my possession. They're just too rare nowadays. I can't tell you how hard it was to hunt it down.

I used to have an '05 WRX. The interior was nicer than this one, yet it was still terrible by modern standards. The seats were uncomfortable, the materials felt very cheap, and it was very light on features. Quite a bit of road noise as well. I've driven plenty of American cars from the period, and while they were generally a bit worse (at a similar price-point at least), that's really not saying much. This is not a nice interior, and Doug is correct to point that out.
@@DCGarage It is definitely not a nice interior and I agree it should be mentioned, but I feel that he just focused on the that subject too much. If I was in my early to late 20’s when this came out I would’ve bought it in a heartbeat. It’s everything I’ve ever looked for in a car. I’m 18 now but I’m gonna try as hard as I can to find a close to stock one in the future if I have the money. They’ll probably be so expensive by then... I’ve been trying to mod my regular Mazda 3 2.0 to be like a Mazdaspeed 3, only to realize that the WRX STi is everything the Mazdaspeed is and way more. The simple blue interior, relative practicality of a 4 door, manual, turbo sound, wheels, spoiler, body style... Everything is perfect
@@jacktomis1743 yo this is insanely late, however… Corksport catback exhaust, 07-09 Mazdaspeed 3 GT alcantara seats, different wheels, LED light swap for the interior, changed the dash clock trim to a different color, different shifter handle + boot, and some other small things.
Doug, The STi didn’t come with floor mats- those were added by the owner. I ordered my non-Noth American market mats from the web. Additionally, there was no stereo provided from the factory- the owner of your car had the WRX factory system put in (by the previous owner, since he didn’t let you know). I had to go to a stereo shop and get a system installed when I bought mine new back on the day. Also, don’t forget the Brembo brakes were exotic back in 2004. Only Ferraris and Porsches came with Brembo brakes until the 350Z, Evo and STi brought them to the masses. The 6 speed transmission was also super rare in those days- anyone that got in my car was blown away by the extra gear. The headlight adjustment isn’t for fog, it’s for when there is excess weight in the truck or rear seats which would cause the nose to tip up and the lights would blind oncoming traffic. You could turn them down. I sold my STi in 2012, and I still miss it.....
Right on the money! When I got mine, I told my Sales man, I would not leave the dealership or sign until they gave me some sort of Floor Mats since it came with zero. He came back with Winter Mats as that very same night was snowing outside! Took it home with no Stereo however I didn't need it as I was in love with that Engine Sound. Miss it dearly.
Just FYI- this video was about 31 minutes long when I finished it; I really geeked out over this car. A lot had to get chopped out to make it a watchable length. I didn’t know about the floor mats, though!
I bought one of these when I was 19. It here 4032 miles on it and was a fresh trade in. I got it December 14 2005. All these dates and numbers are burned into my memory, that’s how awesome this car was. It was a big deal to me though, 660 a month car payment, 242 a month insurance, it got sub 20 mpg and seen over 100 mph nearly every time I drove it. Every time the guys at the dealership see me to this day they all bring up how I left the dealership sideways and how they all took bets at how long until it was wrecked. Mine had the factory radio delete, wrb with gold wheels. Such a fun car. Sold it just over a year later with 60k miles on it. Paid 32 With an extra set of winter wheels and tires. it was over new sticker and due to their guaranteed credit program I paid like 12% interest. Sold it for 24k. Still to this day it was my favorite car I’ve owned and I currently have a pulleyed e85 ctsv2 in the garage and a 9 second drag truck. December 20 2020 I purchased a 2020 Honda Odyssey elite from the same salesman that sold me the sti, my how times change.
The light angle adjuster isn't for "fog lights", its for when you carry passengers and / or cargo you angle the light Down to not blind oncoming traffic, and actually light up the road and not the treetops. This have been standard on cars since the 90's or earlier.

Back in 2007, I searched for my 2004 STi nation-wide for a year trying to find one that wasn't modified to death or crashed. Patience paid off, and I still have it today. After an engine rebuild at 114K miles, (plus a few mild mods) it makes 286 HP at the wheels. Of course people squeeze way more power out of these engines, but for my application (autocross) it's got plenty of power. Coilovers with adjustable shocks and front camber plates made it much more manageable. I can't believe it's a 17 year-old car already! Anytime I've experimented with DCCD adjustments, my times are slower, so it seems like the computer does a better job. These are pretty spartan cars, but they put the money where it counts. If you want to go fast for few $$$, plastic trim, no armrests, and no trunk lid liner aren't deal breakers at all. And there's a certain joy that comes with being able to catch or beat much more costly cars from Lotus, Porsche, etc. on the tarmac. I've known a few people who had one of these cars, later bought newer STis and each of them really missed their old one. Subaru got it right the first time.
I absolutely was in love with this car when it was new when I was in HS! Still just the best looking WRX/STI model ever made...give me the white one with gold rims and blue interior!

Bought a WRX in 02, sold it 17 years later for a premium. Stock, not hammered, journal with every light bulb/oil change , 208K miles . No real issues for the first 10 years. Looked for a replacement like it and finally found a low mileage ‘05 that was marginal on it’s maintenance.
finding this video years later.. i'd like to add a note. This car also performs like this on gravel, or in the snow. The joy of driving a performance car, off-road, is thrilling.
Let me rephrase that for him, never modified with power and body mods, anything that would increase the performance at the cost of reliability or stability. The hella horns are a bolt-on affair that, if anything, increases the value and reliability.
That was the first thing I noticed. But yeah, it's stock performance wise. The horns are probably the only mod, and it's pure bolt on. You just remove the bolt, take off the horns, but the bolt back in and you are stock.
Yesterday I took ownership of a 2003 "blobeye" WRX STI with only 50,000 miles on the clock, its condition is so good that it looks pretty close to brand new. My one is a "Type UK" with the Prodrive Performance Pack which is giving it 315bhp and it's totally stock (excluding the PPP). It has a six speed manual gearbox and so far I'm finding that a bit tricky to learn, but OMG is it fast.

Very common in Europe.

it's because us normal people don't get the chance to even to see the most exotic (let alone, sit or DRIVE one) cars. i.e. most typically bland U.S. cities where something as exotic as a Huracan comes across the street maybe once a year for me at least.

@@seanl764 bruh its a fucking lambo
Enjoy life.
I've just wanted to write this comment myself. Thank you and I hope that Doug will see this message.
Wow. You wrote a novel.

I really don't see the "Terrible interior". It's pretty normal and standard for the era.
Most American cars were worse in this department
Jesus Manuel this dude wants 2020 luxury car features in a 2004 sti.
Every minute of the video was to point out the "cheapness" and "bad quality" of the interior and it really isn't that bad when you go back and see the other cars from that era.
By modern standards is trash but back in the day I'd say it was above average to it's competition
I love the "cheap" Japanese car interiors of this era. No stupid soft finishes that wear out and get sticky. But everything is screwed together properly and durable.
@@AKADriver that's the key difference between Japanese and American cars of the era. My 2005 Subaru felt cheap, but it still felt new 10 years later. A 2005 Chevy felt about the same when new, but didn't age as well.

@@jacktomis1743 yo this is insanely late, however…
Corksport catback exhaust, 07-09 Mazdaspeed 3 GT alcantara seats, different wheels, LED light swap for the interior, changed the dash clock trim to a different color, different shifter handle + boot, and some other small things.
Doug,
The STi didn’t come with floor mats- those were added by the owner.
Racer- X The 6 speed was rare, except for every V8 f-body from 1993-2002. And corvette.
I was wondering about the stereo myself, mine is a factory no stereo car, but I also have a different center console
Yup. The 03-04 radio was not standard. It’s only 05 and up that Subaru give you radio and CD player.

This video is just so on point, incredible.
The light angle adjuster isn't for "fog lights", its for when you carry passengers and / or cargo you angle the light Down to not blind oncoming traffic, and actually light up the road and not the treetops.
This have been standard on cars since the 90's or earlier.
Americans all drive with their highbeams on anyway so nobody would ever use the adjuster lol
Also this isn't the first time that this was explained on Doug's channel.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have my 05' STi! It's fun to drive still. I wished Subaru would up the f'ing power after 10+ years which is just silly now, but back in 04-05' I remember it was crazy to have 300hp in a 4 door sedan that was considered an econo box.
Why would they up the power. 300hp in 2900lb vehicle is super car territory. If they raise it to 400hp for example it would be deadly.
@@Y10Q the new sti's are no where near supercar territory and they weigh about 3400 lbs curb weight so a bump in power would be kinda nice especially since they keep raising the prices for a slight improvement over the last year
The new WRX is so slow. Like 5.5 0-60. Its unacceptable.
its just sad cause with the weight difference im pretty sure these old ones beat the new ones if they had to race with conditions being equal... same when u compare the evo 5 to the evo 10 ... added weight and not adding power

"Cost cutting cheap interior" You just described every car maker during that period
Richard Button yea because luxury cars didn’t exist right?

Doug : No storage area on the back doors

When they bought it, the Mitsu dealer gave us a free copy of 2 Fast 2 Furious lol. I'm 31 years old, so you can only imagine how it was driven, like a grandma by a grandma. Unfortunately my buddy did a few mods but it is still under 30k miles. To add to that, I remember riding in the Evo with my father. The interior on that thing was even cheaper and more sparse than the STi. The seats were better in my opinion having had STi seats in my WRX. The Evo recaro's were incredible. That car absolutely ripped. Not to mention, after getting it in 2003, you felt like you were driving a Lamborghini. People would ask to take photos with it at gas stations, try and catch up to take pictures on the road. It was an incredible time for the Evo and STi.

"This one has never been modified".
Shows hella horns in the front grill.
That's like saying you modded your car by tinting the windows.
I think I saw a subwoofer power cable off the battery, too. Maybe factory head unit was swapped in for filming
