  • CR230F complete installation of a XR250R rear shock on a CRF230F and new lighter front brake rotor too. Includes old dude test ride at DT1 MX park in Tulare Ca. Trying to make the CRF230F into a CRF230R race bike (if they actually made one.) Can it be done?

    Nice job! For the USD fork it will be a bit more challenging. The pivot column has a bigger diameter and length. You will also have to find a wheel and caliper that fit the fork which is not cheap. That's why I chose a 1989 CR125R fork for my 1999 XLR125R which is already a huge improvement. I made a video on my channel about it. The pivot column is bigger, but the diameter is the same, so you can use the same bearings. For the length, you will need to thread down the pivot column whatever you chose then cut it about 1inch. The wheel and brake caliper fit perfectly. I'm guessing the fork and caliper are the same on the XLR125R and the CRF230F

      At least you didnt choose the 1990 CR125R fork, the first year of USD forks on the 125 and a total mess! Terrible.
      1989 was the best and pinnacle of conventional RSU forks.
      With the CRF150R forks (I already bought a complete triple clamp set on ebay for $90) the only problem is the too short steering (pivot)stem, but I will just press it out and press in an XR250R stem, which fits perfect and is also aluminum. No problem. I can use my original 230F wheel, head bearings, brake caliper with an adaptor plate, and the front 150R axle with a modified axle spacer. Quite doable.
      Endless information source available from this guy: www.rickramsey.net/CRF230Fforks.htm

      Nice! I started to go for the XR 400 forks, but decided to stay on the light weight theme, building a light weight MXer and go with the 5 pound lighter CRF 150R forks instead of the one pound heavier XR400 fork. The 400 fork is a great one too, superior in many ways. I’ll be doing some more videos on it. Thanks for watchin’

      BTR is huge on those xr400 forks also, he puts them on everything. It's the wrong fork for this bike. They are heavy and they throw the rake angle way off, effecting the handling.

    At the track or trail you can always use a tire iron to straighten your rotor.

    I just did the XR shock swap on my 230 and saw something pretty interesting, I got what eBay called a 92-94 xr250r shock, and I see on your sheet it says compression only. This one has a rebound clicker on the rod, however on rebuilding it, the rod is solid (no low speed rebound circuit 😂) Wonder how much time people spend adjusting their 92 XR rebound swearing up and down it's shaving their lap times...

    • @lowbuckgarage1
      @lowbuckgarage1  8 місяців тому

      Interesting you say that. I thought my rebound adjuster appeared to be broken or malfunctioning, I couldn’t adjust it, that would explain it. Regardless, the XR shock was still a vast improvement over the stock pogo stick crf230f shock!
      I eventually bit the bullet and installed the Racing Brothers shock, though pricey, but is OMG 😃 excellent!

    Were you able to get new plastics?!?! If so, where? I love the bike too. I just blew my rear shock somehow and I’m debating on this, or I’ve heard from thumpertalk that hlebo bros suspension can rebuild the 230 shock and revalve it specifically for your weight. I’m debating on a bunch of stuff lol, it’s sucks I can’t just rebuild it myself!

    • @lowbuckgarage1

      Original plastics, with a little SC1 rubbed in.
      The new Vonkat shock is worth checking out, decent price and waaaay better than a rebuild. Wish i would have bought the Vonkat instead of eventually buying the Racing Bros shock which is fantastic but was very pricey.

    I'm also looking to reduce the weight of my CRF230F, but in my country we don't have certain items offered in the US. Could that HONDA CRF150R Tusk Motorcycle Spoke Kit - Rear will work on 230 rims? Obviously I am referring to the nipples, which are made of aluminum. Thanks!
