    You guys are asking.
    Husband’s brother(ajubonim)
    Husband’s brother’s wife(hyungnim)
    Many of you think hyung is just what you call your older
    Brother If you are a male but it’s also what the younger sister in law calls her older sister in law married to her husbands older brother~ so many family titles to remember hehe~

    I partially can confirm what Megan said. I never had a Korean mother in law but I was in a bad Situation in Korea. A guy saw me on the street. Took me to his home in which his mom and dad also lived. He was out the next day. And lemme tell you, I've never experienced such heartwarming parents. They literally treated me like their daughter. The Father wantes to buy me Shoes (Cuz mine got holes in it. And I was broke af)
    The mother took great care of me. Making me Tea so that I can be healthier. She looked at me like a Mother could look so lovely to her Child (Even tho I wasn't her child) And said "You're beautiful" with such affection. Another time "You're an angel"
    I really felt like they are my Patents. I miss them so much.
    Another story: When I went to Korea (Flight from Amsterdam to Incheon) I was soooo sick. No sleep for over 30 hours. Back pain. Didn't eat. I sat down next to a Korean couple. Their age around 40-50. During the flight, I felt so dizzy and my stomach hurt cuz of my bad condition. You know what the Woman did? She took my Hand, gave me a massage. Told his husband to ask a flight attendant for painkillers. Which he did. They were worried about me. A stranger. But the mother was sooo lovely. So the flight attendant thought I am their daughter xD

They keep FEEDING me lol! 😂 Or taking me out to eat (and always paying) or sending me home with snacks. We’re off school right now because of the virus and they keep writing me to check in and worrying that I’m going to get sick or lonely... It’s actually really sweet 🥺 Occasionally my American side will think “I came here to get more independent not be coddled!!” and I think that’s where some misunderstandings can come up in these in-law situations as well, but you definitely scored good in-laws and I think I scored great coteachers as well 🥰

      A huge part of Korean Culture is a waterfall effect. Basically, the parents, elders, seniors at school or work will make sure you are properly taken care of (not all the time but just in general) That's one of the reasons age, seniority, and hierarchal positions and respect are considered so important. In turn, you would be expected to care for your children, juniors or new recruits in the same way you were taken care of. I remember being a westerner first working in Korea, my senior took so much care for me buying me lunch and even allowing me to crash at his place when my place flooded out. In turn, I remember him telling me, when a new guy came into the workforce, for me to 'teach him the ropes' which generally means to take care of him just as I took care of you.

      @@stargirl7646 I'm Chinese American and I am definitely very western in my ways (though I was raised in a strictly Chinese household). However, when my aunt (who is younger than me and raised in China/Macau) immigrated to the US, SHE would do the same thing and take care of me and make sure I was safe, etc. Even though she's the same age as my younger sister! It's definitely in the culture. And, not gonna lie, it feels nice to be cared for sometimes, even if you don't necessarily want it in that moment. (Like you, I'm trying to seek out independence and do things on my own LOL). I think this video has given me a better perspective on my own family's culture and appreciation for their "coddling" ways.

    The give and take comes in play when the children take care of their parents as elders I think. In North America we do not have a culture of taking our parents in when they are old and cannot support or care for themselves as much as I have noticed in many Eastern cultures.

    • @valeriewilson182
      @valeriewilson182 4 роки тому +55

      While I definitely hope to be able to care for my parents as they age, in the States there are so many things that hinder young people from doing so. Outrageous amounts of student debt, the fact that so many occupations are becoming obscure and the rising cost of living all make it very difficult for young people to take care of themselves let alone parents and grandparents. Again, I’m not making excuses, but there are a few things to consider.

      same with all latin cultures I think... I'm from spain and it isn't a "rule" but past a certain age or if illness happens you're expected to look after your grandparents, parents and other elder relatives. It's very frowned upon to leave them to care for themselves or even putting them in home cares.

    You're raising so many important points here, Megan, cudos to you! I come from an extremely individualistic country where kids are recommended even by the government to pay rent to their parents as soon as they turn 18. Meeting my Korean husband over seven years ago and coming to terms with my family in law was very difficult at first, as I felt as if they were trespassing on my privacy, treating me like a child, and everything else you mentioned in your video. Now that I've finally come to my senses I really feel so much love for all of my family in law. I'm not kidding when I say they've made me a better person and I'm so thankful. My MIL somestimes even feed me stuff, like literally with her hand! It's all good though! And finally, I'm happy to hear that you're finding your place in their family so fast.

    I want to know more about 효도 - what is expected from a daughter-in-law? What are ways that would show a parent that you care for them, and how do Korean parents want to be honored? I would love to see you do a video on this since it's such an important part of a family dynamic.

    • @ekcolenu
      @ekcolenu 4 роки тому +33

      I agree! From what I've seen and heard, the daughter-in-law is expected to do all of the cooking and cleaning when she goes the in-laws house (for example on holidays), and that the couple must always go to the husband's parent's home first. Like you, I also married a Korean man. We all live in Canada, but my husband and I only see his parents a couple of times each year, as we live far away. I think because you and I are not Korean, the expectations for us as the daughter-in-law are very different! Maybe we are lucky? :)

      @@ekcolenu This is true. Non-Korean daughter-in-laws are likely given much more freedom. Because I'm Korean and spoke the language, my in-laws thought that I'm "fully Korean" and gave me the full treatment. Frequent visits were expected despite living far, cooking and cleaning once I got there was the norm on top of random errands that took up my weekends. The husband and I couldn't take it anymore and said something, and now things are just a little bit weird. Glad Megan lucked out.

    Amazing video Megan 💗💗💗 treasure the time you have with your in-laws, sadly my hubbys parent's both passed away young and and unexpected, after the first few rocky years of with my mother-in-law, she grew to love me, and eventually we became best friends, I married her 1st born and only son, he has 4 sisters, lol and at first she thought i stole her son, but later realized, after i kept showing her love and respect, that she loved me too, i took care of her thru several illnesses when her daughters were too busy. But i would drive over an hour each way with a baby in tow to bring her homemade soups and go get her groceries, medication etc... id bring her gifts saying they were from her son. Lol,,, but she knew they were special gifts i would go get her, after she passed away i took in her beloved pomeranian dog, and she is now 19, blind and deaf, and yet in good health, i take care of her 24/7, it's hard work but she would of done the same thing, i miss my mom-in-law everyday!! She was just like a real mom to me, not every wife is so lucky, I'm so happy you have a great new family!! Treasure them always!!!

    While the whole video makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, you have to remember that Korean parents also don't save much for retirement with the expectation that their kids will take care of them.

    • @nvno1943

      Same as in China. The parents will live with their child.

    • @JIYkp

      @FBar It goes both ways. The parents kick their kids out of the house after college and are able to save for their own retirement.
      The kids get less support but aren't expected to take care of their parents (financially).

    Oh my goodness girl you are so blessed and those pants are so cute. I want a pair. I don’t have any of my parents (I had 2 sets) and I doubt they’d have been like your in-laws. Now I have to say they sound like what I would be. I used to think I was just being over protective but your video actually brings it into more perspective. It’s so crazy how different cultures can be yet some American parents are like this and the children get upset. I’ll be showing your video to my children. No they aren’t married (to young) and they love how protective I am but they’re getting older and I feel like they’re starting to change how they feel about me being actually like your mom-in-law. I think I’m this way because my parents were protective in a sense but not very loving. Your mom-in-law seems protective and loving without smothering. There’s a huge difference. My babies will ALWAYS be my babies.

    Hi Megan, I love that you explained the cultural dynamics in a Korean family. I'm Chinese American and can see the similarities with my own Chinese mom where she wants to help as much as possible to give you (even though I'm full grown adult) a good life. Most Asian parents express their love through actions and food. I'm really happy for you and your family. =)
    P.S. would you ever consider having a few cooking segments with your mother in law? (I've seen the meals and they look so delicious!) I think it'll be a great way to pass down the recipes/heritage to your twins in the future. Cheers ❤

    I love their tradition it's their way of showing you they love you and they are letting you know, you are a family to them which is soooooooo sweet. Closeness it's so important. Nowadays most people don't care about their parents and even parents don't care about their children and at the same time they don't give a damn about anyone else's daughters or sons meaning if their son or daughter got married. They don't treat that person as a family member. Korean and some other culture's they do so many things for their daughter in law or son in law it's their way of saying sweetheart you are my daughter. I love seeing kind and caring people, I wish their were more people like them.

    My in-laws are Polish and are exactly the same way as Korean in-laws. When my mother in law was alive, she did a lot of the same things like cooking food and sending it over, teaching me how to make Pierogi and kapusta etc... My father in law now lives with us and he does a lot as well. He will notice something randomly and buy whatever it is to fix it or add to the house lol. Holiday gifts are always extravagant. I've been in the family for 10 years and still trying to get used to it lol.

    Asian and born and raised in the US. This video actually made me realize how my dad was with me. I was probably too western but I used to hate how my dad disabled my independence. He would go into my room and clean it, do my laundry if it was full, buy necessities that were on sale like socks or leggings, bug me about wearing a coat if it’s cold, getting me gas for my car….all these things felt crippling to me when I was younger because I was craving that “independence”… we used to have so many fights about it and how I didn’t need him to spoil me with all that… now I’m realizing it was the Asian way of showing love 🥺
