The main advantage of getting up early isn't necessarily that you 'gain time' in the day. It's that you have the hours in the morning to yourself with no distractions and it gives you more agency. I go to bed about 10.30, wake up at about 6 and the time I have before a school is so much more productive and generally satisfying than after school, or the couple of hours I used to have in the evening instead.
Hi Edward! Yeh - I maybe didn't make enough of a clear point of that - you're definitely right on this... I think for me, while I gained the benefits of limited distractions at the start of the day, my slightly lower levels of focus due to tiredness probably counteracted any benefit there. That said, I will try it again after an earlier bed time, and perhaps then I'll feel the benefits of a completely distraction-free morning much more 😃
I'm working on my masters research and you just inspired me to not start a portion of my work at 11pm to 1am and instead to wake up in the morning before everyone else in my household because as you've said there's agency and no distracted

Hey enjoyed the video been trying this recently couple of things I think you should have done/ considered before your final decision. 1 you have to get enough sleep. 2 you get used to it like anything and it needs to be consistent. 3 you have to sleep earlier but as you mentioned you value your late nights soft family and social reasons fair. 4 Maybe consider doing this over a week or so I think you will find a much higher gain in productive minutes as well as quality of study 5 try to eat at regular meal times with the rest of the world for example when you wake up don’t go straight for breakfast maybe a coffee and fruit for 2 hours then have breakfast lunch dinner and maybe a light snack before dinner. 6 I have found the focus and quality of work especially in the first 6 hours to be so great! 7 have scheduled breaks try the pomodoro method either 50/10 or 45/15 have been good for me they keep you focused and you don’t just take a break when you get tired, find things hard or loose focus you know a break is coming up. Also don’t forget long breaks too maybe 1 hour for lunch and late afternoon or evening another 2 - 3 hours spaced according to your schedule and what works well. Great video mate! :)
Thanks so much Aakriti! Well, hopefully I grow quickly, but I'll never forget all the amazing people who have followed me and kept me motivated along the way, so thank you!!
Waking up at around 4-5 AM is a little hard to get used to! I did it in increments (woke up at 5:00 for a week, then at 4:30 the next, and then finally at 4:00 am on the third week). I love studying at this hour, as my mind is fresher, compared to staying up late at night. Then again, I juggle work and grad school, so apart from early mornings and the weekends, I don’t have a lot of study time! So yes, I really have to make the most of it. I mostly rest when I arrive home from work or class. :)
Hey man, came from Ali's instagram. I really liked your summary towards the end. I've tried waking up that early consistently but just found it unsustainable.
Hey Cullin - thanks a lot for coming over and checking out the video 😀 Glad you liked it - yeh, it's a tough one. I feel perhaps as an 'every 2 weeks' thing, it might work, provided you can plan an early night before and have an amazingly productive day once every 10 ish working days!? How come you found it unsustainable? Just tired / couldn't get to bed early enough to make it work?
I tried it couple of times but I just can’t go to bed early Let’s say I have to go to bed at 10 because I need to get up at 6 the next day I really need to force myself and it’s simply not enjoyable My natural sleep rhythm is 2 am - 10 am I feel most comfortable with that The productive hours you have in the morning is what I have at night
Feeling tired because you probably still aren't used to it. Ive been doing it for months now and it gets a lot easier. Even now do it on the weekend. The secret is to go to bed early and get the hours in. I'm in bed by 8:30pm, Asleep by 9pm and when my Alarm goes off at 4:30 am, i do hit the snooze a couple of times but i believe this is out of habit. I leave for work by 5:30am and am into the office by 6:15. that 90mins i get alone is what sets me up for the day.
As a secondary school student in Malaysia, it’s a norm for us 😌 waking up at 5am, sleeping at 12am and we don’t eat breakfast, school ends at 2pm, extracurricular activities, tuitions, homework and assignment 😌 Asians go through this everyday and we don’t even talk so much about it
I love waking up at 5 because it's the only time of the day I have completely to myself which makes it so easy to do whatever I want without any distractions. However, I think it's always important to prioritise sleep over getting up early, because you literally will not be able to do anything properly whilst tired. I usually go to bed around 10-10:30 to get up at 5 - for law school, personally this is much better for me because my focus is so much better early in the morning.
Yeh - I think this point about distractions is absolutely true 👌, and something I maybe should have considered more! I think for me, because I was tired when I first woke up, I really lost out on the big benefits of having focused time with no distractions a little. But, I will definitely try this again at some point in the future and try and get to bed pretty early (10:30 ish), so I can hopefully get the full benefits of that distraction-free time! How do you find going to bed at 10 - 10:30 - as in do you find that difficult with doing stuff outside your studies, socially?
@@liam.porritt At the moment, I don't find it difficult socially because of lock down - but ordinarily, not really. I would only go out socially on Friday or Saturday, and I wouldn't wake up till 8 or 9, then get started with work. I usually stick with 5 am during the week because it gives it a bit of a work week split.
I wake up at 7 but I sleep at 9:30-10:30. Interestingly I miss socializing time as you said because by then I’d be too tried from going to work, going to the gym and cooking my meals.
The reason people get up so early is so they can spend time on their selves, spend time on personal projects, or just have some quality me time. I find this time much more fulfilling than they time I would find it in the evening. In the evening I tend to just be tired and end up watching Netflix or scrolling on my phone, while those things are much harder to justify in the morning.
Great video. Late summer, I started doing the same. Except I would naturally wake up at 4 sometimes being wide awake. My routine was to hit some MTB trails for a couple hours and be back in time to start work. It was an awesome way to start the morning.
Great content, really motivating to see you work so hard despite the lockdown and all that stress. One question, what's the light attached to your monitor?
if your gonna be waking up at 5am, it is so important that you have at least 7-8 hours of sleep, so going to at 10pm or earlier, if you going to bed at midnight or later, dont eve bother waking up at 5 its not worth to deprive you body of those valuable 2-3 hours of sleep. also get your self an ipad and digitised all those notes, it will make it so much easier to find specific part in notes when your studying
I recommend to use uni style fit meister pen.. Superb ink quality... Rather than the bic ballpoint. I use bic ball poiny since college until my 3rd year as professional Architect, in all my sketches on sites, until i found this Uni style fit meister 5 barrel gel pen. Perfect for note taking and can personalize what color you want to out on the barrel.. With many color options on their refills. A bit pricey, but for sure, quality output it produces.
I think it is about setting a routine. You are gonna see advantages after a week of following the same sleep schedule. For instance like 5am-9pm x7. Otherwise great video loved it 😄
Ever since I joined Gym, in 2008 , I began waking up at 5. Earlier it was a problem, but now I have time for myself & I never feel like I need more sleep. So everyone trying this should know , All the UA-cam guys tries for a week or a month, but that’s not enough. Try by yourself for atleast a few 3-4 months then one can get used to it.
I once tried to wake up at 2am every morning. I did this because I wanted to be by my computer during the night time, but I didn't want to ruin the next day. It worked perfectly for me, granted, I had to go to sleep at 6-8pm. It's also only possible if you have a flexible schedule
Sadly, I have to wake up at 4 AM to commute to my job and I think it's the toughest thing I have ever had to do. I think the worst part of it is that I do not have a clear separation between the days that is because I am also a student so I have classes right after coming from work until 8 PM. After that I have to prepare my lessons until 11 PM. Therefore, this is the reason why it can get depressing from time to time and I sometimes get the sense that apart from the weekend there's no real distinction between days since I only get around 5 hours of sleep at best.
Very interesting video. Out of curiosity, do you generally find yourself to be more productive in the mornings or evenings? Do you think this affected your findings?
Thanks so much Kristina! Generally, I'm most productive in the mornings, pretty unproductive midafternoon and then very productive again in the evenings! I'd say, I think that how tired I felt when I first woke up meant I got a bit less really productive studying done than I would normally in the same amount of time. But of course, I don't normally have soooo much time in one day! But I'm a morning person for sure, so if you're not that would probably make this completely pointless - and likely counterproductive! 🤗
Liam Porritt Thanks for sharing-forgot to respond when you commented. Just an update, I’ve been trying out getting up early (not 5am, but 7 am sure is different than the usual 10/11!) and I have been LOVING it! I’m a morning person but college isn’t super conducive to early nights/early mornings so I haven’t been getting up early until now. I get work done for school as well as personal improvement and it’s just so refreshing. Thanks for the motivation!
Waking up at 5 Am is just natural to me since i am used going to school at that time and now it is integrated into my sleep pattern and it is amazing for me am at 100/ efficiency at the Early mornings
"early brownie points" - haha smart! this made me want to try waking up early as well. definitely, the whole quarantine lifestyle has made me slump in productivity...especially since my IB exams got canceled, I felt like I lost a sense of purpose. Thanks so much for this! I hope you are safe and healthy :,) (also - what was the running app u were using?)
Hehe - thanks Ren :p Let me know how you get on with waking up early and if you feel like it starts to make you feel a bit more productive, although maybe try a bit later than 5, like 6:30ish! Hope you're safe and healthy too, and the app is called RunKeeper 😀
@@liam.porritt I woke up at 7:00 two days ago but sadly woke up at 9:00 today...I'll try again tomorrow haha. I realized that need to sleep early to be able to wake up early because 7 hours is essential for me to be able to function! Thank you for the app - I've downloaded and love it!
I feel like this experiment was more about how well you can manage a day with less sleep than normal, rather than going to bed and getting up earlier :) You would probably have to do it for at least a few days, and try to get in the right amout of sleep even though you wake up earlier, in order to actually do this experiment haha
Hey, I saw that you did French and Spanish at Cambridge and got a training contract with CC. I was wondering if you have any tips for things to do while at Cambridge (ie societies) and in general to boost a training contract application? I’m going to be studying history at Cam from October, so just looking ahead :)
Hey!! Awesome that you are already thinking about doing a conversion and training contracts!! First of all, congratulations on getting in - which college you going to? Then, I’d definitely recommend going to as many law events as you can - get signed up to careers service notifications early and you’ll be able to find out when evenings and events are! Then, get on applications for schemes in your first year - they didn’t exist when I was in first year, but if you get a TC then, it makes the rest of your time at uni much less stressful!! Hope that helps and best of luck Sara 🤗 x
Hey I was wondering if you could do an in-depth video about getting into law starting from high school and the subjects you picked , to applying for uni to the point you are now that would be so useful x
Hey Abbie! Yup - I'll definitely try and do a video on my route into law at some point! I actually didn't study law at uni and did a conversion instead, so that might be interesting for people! P.s. sorry for taking so long to reply xx
Thank you for sharing this in-depth insight. I just want to state that you made a really good advertising for Samsung displays. I would like to buy one, because they seem to be nice for studying and writing papers on them....

As a secondary school student in Malaysia, it’s a norm for us 😌 waking up at 5am, sleeping at 12am and we don’t eat breakfast, school ends at 2pm, extracurricular activities, tuitions, homework and assignment 😌 Asians go through this everyday and we don’t even talk so much about it
Study_YS i had this type of routine too I was out most of the for school and tuitions 😂
Waking up at 5am? Are you a Muslim? I went to bed at 11pm and woke up at 6am back in my F4 and F5.
Love this! Thanks for sharing! For all of you who have adopted the early AM schedules, how long did it take for you to adjust?
Very motivating video! Could you perhaps share the playlist you were listening to?
Liam : wakes up at 5 am. Me : wakes up at 5 pm.
We're not same
I wake up at 7 but I sleep at 9:30-10:30.
Interestingly I miss socializing time as you said because by then I’d be too tried from going to work, going to the gym and cooking my meals.
Best, thank you for this awesome video. Love both of yours bro and Dr Ali's videos😍😍😍
Thanks so much Ashutosh! So glad you enjoyed it and thanks for coming over on Ali's recommendation 🙂
Amazing video, keep up the good work👍
The reason people get up so early is so they can spend time on their selves, spend time on personal projects, or just have some quality me time. I find this time much more fulfilling than they time I would find it in the evening. In the evening I tend to just be tired and end up watching Netflix or scrolling on my phone, while those things are much harder to justify in the morning.
im from brazil and this vlog is so beautiful and i dont understend everything but my eyes loved every minute.

Great video. Late summer, I started doing the same. Except I would naturally wake up at 4 sometimes being wide awake. My routine was to hit some MTB trails for a couple hours and be back in time to start work. It was an awesome way to start the morning.
If someone wants to wake up at 5am, I recommend u getting a 26 minutes nap at 3-4 pm👌
Great content, really motivating to see you work so hard despite the lockdown and all that stress. One question, what's the light attached to your monitor?
Dude Tycho is the BEST for studying
if your gonna be waking up at 5am, it is so important that you have at least 7-8 hours of sleep, so going to at 10pm or earlier, if you going to bed at midnight or later, dont eve bother waking up at 5 its not worth to deprive you body of those valuable 2-3 hours of sleep. also get your self an ipad and digitised all those notes, it will make it so much easier to find specific part in notes when your studying
Otherwise great video loved it 😄
Hell yeah I’m digging that post rock-y playlist my man
This was cool. Just subbed. Keep up the great content 👍
Keep up the top quality work
Ever since I joined Gym, in 2008 , I began waking up at 5.
Amazing bruh I like your Story telling skill ❤️
Have a Great day bruh.
Thanks so much bro :)
@@ren7068 I'm trying but have failed mainly because I go bed very late
For me the biggest advantage to wake up early is to have time to prepare myself for the day more, with less time constraints
Ok, but my question is:you should me to wake UP at 5 am?
I feel like this experiment was more about how well you can manage a day with less sleep than normal, rather than going to bed and getting up earlier :) You would probably have to do it for at least a few days, and try to get in the right amout of sleep even though you wake up earlier, in order to actually do this experiment haha
The only time I wake up really early is when I fly to another country for holiday and that's when I wake up at like 1 or 2 in the morning
Nice video! What is this calendar app? Google Calendar?
Nice video & routines
great video! congrats to your commitment.
Thanks so much Diego 🤗🤗
you deserve a lot of subscribers. you do amazing video.
Same here I try to wake early so I could prepare for my finals ⚡
I m so sure that u are going to get more audience very soon 🧡🧡
I've been getting up at 5am since I was in year 8 (I know that sounds crazy) 😂😂 it doesn't really bug me whatsoever now.
This is great editing !!
Liam Porritt
Thanks for the great tips - and I’ll be at Gonville and Caius!
What is the name of the lamp above your monitor? - looks great!
Thank you for sharing this in-depth insight.
I just want to state that you made a really good advertising for Samsung displays. I would like to buy one, because they seem to be nice for studying and writing papers on them....
Pleeease link the study playlist 🙏
I've been going asleep 5am
Hey Liam! nice video. do you have this list on Spotify? thanks!
Nice Filofax! Love paper planning.
New to the channel. What did you use when you made your schedule on your Mac?
I woke up at 5 for the last 3 months. Its so nice.
What Calender app is that? It looks soooo good!
A bit irrelevant but what app do you use for running! love the video!
Can I ask where did you get your book stand? I‘m looking for one that can stand the weight of law books and yours looks rather sturdy.
Liam looks like he's gotten more done in 1 hour than i did all quarantine :)
What software or app are you using to make the schedule in the video...???
Bic: With this multi pen you only need one pen instead of four! Neat isn't it?
This madlad: keeps four different multi pens on his desk
Kind of hate how low the volume is - really screws up watch-later playlist for background.
Really nice vid😊 now I am motivated 💗
I wish I could see more vid Congragt new subscriber earned!!!
As with all these things, it's not the time you have to get up that matters, it's the time you go to sleep...
OMG he does the Ali abdaal SIGNATURE pencil twirl
Where did you get the lamp on top of the monitor ?
Yoh should get up at 5am but also go to sleep earlier 😂😂
U really motivate me to study and learn
I liked your room so much good luck 👍🍀
Greatly motivational!!
great vid!
This really works when you have a family with little siblings making noise all day
