I've followed the same 15 minute daily ritual on-and-off for the past five years. It's crazy simple but it helps to kickstart my day, avoid procrastination & focus on my work for much longer periods of time. Hope you get some takeaways to apply to your own routine. Look below for all the things I reference...

Here are the 5 things in my 15 minute daily ritual (go to description for links):
1. Make coffee.
2. Write out 1 to 3 most important tasks.
3. Find solitude (aka self-isolate while self-isolating 😂).
4. Headphones + Lo-Fi Beats/Deep Focus Playlist.
5. Eliminate distractions by using Freedom App + Deleting Social Apps before work.

Me too I swear !
I thought the same thing 😂
Me: *Using this video to procrastinate on things*
Matt: _"You are the very thing I swore to destroy."_
will you procrastinate more or less in the long run because you watched this video? That is the question.
I would like to share what I do, in case someone finds it interesting:
- The day before, plan what you want to do and be realsitic, leave room for failure (example: study 5 units, but doing 3 is fine)
- Wake up at the same hour everyday. It doesn't have to be very early, just the same, to build a habit and a sense of purpose.
- Identify what you like, and use it as a reward. If you are binge watching a series that you like very much, try to earn the joy of watching it. This is important so as to not fall in a pit of guilt and malaise, where nothing makes you happy. You can for example start by dedicating 30 min of work (maybe with a Pomodoro and relaxing music) and then playing 30 min of Animal Crossing. This makes you enjoy your relaxing times, and not feel guilty. As time goes by, you can maybe dedicate the whole morning to work and the evenings to yourself.
- Set your space as you like. This is obvious, but very important. Have a shower and get dressed, don't be with your pijama all day, ventilate your room, do your bed, free your desk from papers and clothes and THEN sit down on your desk. Turn your phone off or put it in another room. And just start doing work. Just starting is a huge step because it breaks the ice, you find that it is not as horrible as your brain put it in advance, and just do as much as you can. Sitting in your chair instead of laying in bed makes it easier, trust me.
- Find ways to enter the flow state: if your house is not quiet, try to put soft music in the background (Sunday Study music playlist by Thom Frank, Lo-Fi streaming, classical music...), ambience videos (rain, white noise, library ambience, coffee shop ambience, etc.) or even no talking asmr. If you use the music that you like, chances are that you will get distracted by singing the lyrics or by a catchy part of the song, but you do you.
Hopefully someone finds any of these points worth reading. Keep going.
Thanks dude. That's pretty helpful. I'll try this today!
Useful tips! Thank you Javi
Interestingly , the little things that we do considering insignificant, affects our focus hugely.
Systematic routine just as you have mentioned makes our day a lot better and satisfying. Thankyou !!
Oh having showers & putting on clean clothes is so important. I don't understand how people don't get bothered by wearing sweaty smelly clothes for days on end.
This is much more helpful 😍
"If you want to rest tomorrow, you gotta hustle today. You cannot achieve great success if you don't take care of the small things first, the longer you procrastinate the bigger the wall you build that prevent you from achieving your goals."

After a couple of weeks of depression once the quarantine started, I feel changed. I’m running daily, studying and finishing up my semester, starting to learn coding, web development, and opening an ebay store. You can do it with just a bit of motivation!

Jw.org
@@Eric21 I think more than Motivation, It's about Momentum. Just start doing the thing..and in 2 to 5 minutes, you get the momentum, and your Procastination is gone.
Sinek: start with why.
Once you have your „why“ you will figure out the „how“. Finding my personal „why“ was more difficult than „how“…
The fact that I'm already into these habits (well, almost) reminds me how far I've come from the days when I didn't know what to do. No state is going to last forever and I'll face low points again, but the main thing is to get up again.
Also, a tip: get into a flow of your work, don't mess with that flow. take breaks ofc but don't keep interrupting yourself again and again.
My top 8 favorite quotes on Procrastination:
1- “The only difference between success and failure is the ability to take action.”
- Alexander Graham Bell
2- "Don't quit, suffer now, and live the rest of your life as a champion."
- Muhammad Ali
3- “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
- Abraham Lincoln
4- “One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon - instead of enjoying the roses blooming outside our windows today.”
- Dale Carnegie
5- “Procrastination is opportunity’s natural assassin.”
- Victor Kiam
6- “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake.”
- Francis Bacon
7- “A year from now you may wish you had started today.”
- Karen Lamb
8- “There is nothing so fatal to character as half-finished tasks.”
- David Lloyd George
My favorite:
"I don't procrastinate. I wait until the last minute to do things, because I will be older, and therefore wiser".
-Unknown
Francis Bacon made that quote too sexy. Gawd'am
@@Snorpish that's one way to look at things :P
@@ericwilliamscell3755 yep!
@Sarah Bailey Yep there's some truth to that as well. It's basically more about not being a Reactionary and just jumping into things without thinking and analyzing.
It's about the wisdom to know where to invest our time & energy, and where not to.
On the other hand, if someone is putting things off only because of laziness or misaligned priorities, then that might not serve them well and he/she might lose a lot of great opportunities.
What i took from this video; “I don’t have noise cancelling headphones, i’ll start my college work when they come in the post”

When quiting coffee, having a hot tea is a good substitute for the making of the coffee as well as having a warm drink. It is not a replacement for coffee, just the action. I found this very helpful when I was quitting coffee. I eventually went back to decaf, because if I miss 1 day of regular=headaches, I.Hate.Headaches! I have a 30 day challenge for you: replacing curse/cuss words with other descriptive and enhancing language that can be repeated to a child. My children are growing minimalists and I love sharing what I learn from you with them! Thanks for the videos, you and your wife are invaluable resources and acquaintances!!
BellaEssentialLiving hi internet friend 👋 just wanted to let you know - I know your pain with quitting coffee! For me, the headaches used to hit in 12 hours of no coffee...18 hours and it was a full-blown migraine!
Question - what cuss word substitutions are you using? I need to quit that too💚
@@hindenburg2006I started cussing because of a very difficult time in my life that I thought I had no control over. I hated that so much in myself that I would catch myself starting to say it and would apologize if it came out or just stop mid-cuss. I relied on prayer and learning to just not speak: maybe you've heard: if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything. There is also the proverb, a foolish man uttereth all his mind, but a wise man keepeth it in til afterward. Occasionally a "oh, poopies" or "boogers" comes out, but it's a far cry from cussing. Like everything, it takes practice. Thanks for asking 😊

GENIUS IDEA!!!🤣🤣🤣
“Procrastination is the common manifestation of resistance because it is easier to rationalise” I think no one has defined procrastination so perfectly before. 👍🏻🙏🏻
Meh, now you just have to define "resistance" instead.
The more useful definition of procrastination, is that it's is your minds' solution to a problem, and that problem is usually some negative emotions that you want to avoid. You have to find out what you are avoiding (often fears of failing, or maybe your task isn't well-defined so you don't know what progress will actually look like).
When you find out what negative emotions you are avoiding, you can implement an actual solution.
Procrastination is NOT a problem - it's a solution to a problem you haven't discovered or identified yet.
As someone with depression and anxiety that can make it difficult to concentrate, your video was not only effective but incredibly soothing to watch. Thanks so much!
I'm doing that coffee and music thing for years also the to-do list but I'm doing them for each day and sometimes there are too much points to check each day. Love this! I'd like to share some tips I use as well for fighting procrastination:
1. Focusing on completing tasks rather than postponing them to better take advantage of your free time.
2. Spend some of your free time on activities that guarantee value and personal growth
3. Identify your Bermuda triangle (3 social media accounts you spend most time on) to understand how your time is spent.
4. Make a simple To-Do-List to track your various tasks, to avoid forgetting and accumulating unexpected work - as well as completing them one by one.
5. If things still aren’t going as well as they might, make a schedule to properly manage your time and keep yourself structured and organised.
6. Distinguish and separate when you use time for work, free time & free time with added value and growth.
7. Use some free time to produce (create anything that's completely your own: a paper, a video, an audio, painting...) rather than consume.
8. Find a passion to develop and don’t worry if it changes overtime.

I am an introvert
But society as we know it doesn't allow me to avoid all sorts of group work so I taught myself to be super social and imitating extroversion when I have to.
I am a naturally chaotic person. My creativity thrives in mess. Yet I have to teach myself to be the person that works on a clean desk with a plan and a to do list. Because that's a skill I need in order to navigate in the society that wants me to be productive. And videos like those have been helping me tons to keep my shit together. So thank you for that!

I've learned the hard way that putting too many things on my to-do list leads to procrastination. I have had to narrow it down to things that are actually doable by putting them on an hourly schedule
So true
15DollarFit lists never fucking work for my miserable ass
I read a great article: instead of having a “to-do” list, have a “done/completed” list, that way when you write down a completed task you can cross or tick it off straight away. At the end of the day you will feel accomplished as you now have a list of fully completed tasks 👍
@@caitlinwest272 I never read this anywhere before..but I do this .it feels better than not getting your to-do list completed.
15DollarFit im a to do list junkie and i have done a lot of technic in updating my to do list..using reminder apps, excel, word etc. But now i’ve been using this technique where i keep my to do list by date in ms word (the details one), then i update it in handwritten to do list (every task should take about 3-5 words only). The idea is to immediately trigger u what to do rather than digesting the long sentence on what u supposed to do.so shifting between task is very smooth and made easy. Just few second glance then u know what to do next already. Owh if u got 10 or more things to do, u can prioritize by ticking top 3 next to your list. Once finish, erase the tick n start ticking other until u finish striking through all task/ things to do. So yeah, handwritten to do list really help.
I just love his way of writing titles. It's just simple and he's not overdoing it.
Thanks for what you do, Matt. Cheers man.

Thank you so much Matt! 😊
I love the way you cut your hair and your youtube content, I can't say thank you enough how your content had influenced my lifestyle and mentality! I love ya!
Love this video! Complements greatly how I can utilize my Passion Planner. The Passion Planner follows the same principles of having daily/weekly focus, seeing progress and balance in your life.
I'm a Windows user, but damn did it hurt when he dropped his laptop. 🥺
I'm sorry but the penguin was EVERYTHING!!! I promise that I was listening and taking note of everything you said and I think your tips are amazing. I'm definitely going to try to incorporate them into my routine but the penguin though...and your expression was hilarious! Thank you for making such good content for a procrastinator such as myself!
Cleaning your desk is probably the best. Literally put only your task on the desk and nothing else. It feels very clean.
I FEEL the same about COFFEE. I love it, I love the ritual, I’m a writer and I enjoy it so much, I know I could write without coffee but I also know that such rituals are important.
"Cool, Matt made a video about procrastination, my number one problem I need to solve!"
A D D T O W A T C H L A T E R
Procrastination is not actually a problem. Its your brains solution to do as little work as efficently as possible.
@@timom9833 well, it becomes a problem if you have loads of work to do for university.😅
@@user-gu8re4os1k I recommend you watch a video on procrastination made by Healthygamergg, it helps your frame your "problem" differently. Hope this helps!
@@timom9833 thanks, I'll check it out!
4:49 the "everything is fine page" probably looked eerie for someone who didn't watch Matt's morning routine video LOL
Ya honestly that's so true I didn't even think of that till you brought it up 😂
Yeah, it’s like a depressed person’s page
These sounds really good! The headphone idea seems so simple but makes a lot of sense and I NEVER thought about using that.
I clean my house before sitting down and strt working, while listening to motivational videos like yours, thanks for the tips!
I actually quit drinking coffee, and I realized that I had a ton of anxiety from the caffeine during those months. I'm alot calmer now, and I'm really productive.
Caffeine gives you energy.
So true for me. I only drink coffee about 10x a year, but when I do, I want to fire everyone.
@Chaldean King similar to* Psychostimulants, yes, but they are not the same.
Me: ok time to get some work done
UA-cam: Matt d’avella How to avoid procrastination
Me: Cya after 10 min Work.
This really made me realize that I must work hard to achieve great things.🔥
Lowkey hard to concentrate with the lofi beat playlist because I just want to freestyle on all of them
When the video started, I was like “did he go to a barber”. Good job!
Honestly, what helps me with procrastination while working from home for the past 8 months is:
- Having Routine and pushing through that routine no matter what
- Having a designated work space at home. And having 2 extra spots where you can work if you get tired of one spot.
- Letting the people you work with know you’re doing serious work and schedule time with them later in the day.
- Working 90 minutes, 30 minutes break sessions
- Taking 2 mental health rest days a week. Most of my work is mentally intensive where I sit and have to concentrate and be mentally involved regularly. So if we take a rest day from a physical workout regimen, why don’t we give our minds a break too? I also stay away from social media and reading the news on those days. My mental health days are either Wednesday’s and Sundays or Saturday’s and Sundays.
The 90 minutes one is interesting. What would you do if:
a) the work is less than 90 minutes?
b) you just did 90 minutes but you think the work is almost done
ArtAway Great Question! Obviously I would recommend to use your intuition. I find that an hour in is when I’m reaching my peak of the project I work on. So the additional 30 minutes gives me a chance to finish things up. When I’m done with the project, though, then I’ll take a break.
If I’m seeing after 90 minutes that I will finish the project in 5-15 minutes then I’ll see it through because I’m in that state of flow.
What helps is setting a timer so you can keep track of time.
For certain activities such as social media, I limit my time to those 90 minutes even if I haven’t gotten through everything I wanted to.
So I would say, identify which activities are most income-producing and with them you work until that task is finished.
Other tasks such as social media (which can cannibalise the time you would’ve spent on your income-producing activities) definitely limit them.
What is it that you do?
@@helzikinz I do pomodoro and it is quite effective, but with pomodoro you'll almost never reach the flow state, so I'm interested in trying 90 minutes approach.
I just realized i left this video in my watch later list, and never finished it.
Great Video Matt 👏🏽
just what I needed! Thanks Matt 😊
