Key Fob Repair - Ram or other types

- This video describes a simple repair to a key fob which has ceased to function correctly. In this one, the little dome switches detached from the rubber key pad interior and slipped away from the contact points on the circuit board. After some experimenting with various glues to reattache the domes to the rubber key pad, I simply cleaned everything up and taped the domes in position over the switchpads. Easy and very effective. Be careful when disassembling the fob as the parts are small and easily lost! Change the battery too while you have it apart. This fix reduces the $2-300 cost of replacement to the cost of a couple of inches of Magic tape. Good luck!
Dude omg ty sooo much...i have used elmers glue, wood glue, crazy glue, Chapstick, Chewing gum, honey, caramel, molasses, paste wax, and nothing has worked as good as this, thanks again good sir!!!
Andrew Farnam you are very welcome. Try denture adhesive next time:)
Great!
Great fix. You saved my fob. I was trying to glue the little disks back on. This tape process worked great!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this! You saved me $300! Yes, that is what the dealership quoted for a new key!
Work perfect with tape! Been dealing with this issue for quite some time and this completely solved it! Thank you!
2012 Ram 1500 - this trick worked perfectly!
Excellent!! I am pleased for you!! Rich.
Had the same problem. Your tape solution fixed the problem. Was going to try to glue them to the rubber piece like original but noticed when putting back together air gets in the rubber piece making it bulge out a bit. If discs come loose I'd just have same problem again. I'll try to remember to come back in a couple months to say if it is "permanent" fix. ¢2 worth of tape is permanent even if i have to do that a couple times a year.
I have a 2012 and it was getting to the point where it was hard to unlock my doors with the key fob button. This was the only function that was affected . When opening up the remote I was able to see gold tabs on the circuit board that make a connection when you press the button on the... back side of the rubber boot there are metal disc that touch on to the goal tabs on the circuit board. All I had to do was use a little Brasso with a paper towel and gently wipe the gold tabs. Apparently they was slightly corroded or had some type of crud on them. Now they are clean and shiny. Now it functions like new.
And just like that, I have fixed my Key Fob. Thanks for the video!
Excellent!
Thanks, it worked, you saved me $300
Thanks! A great idea to secure those button contacts!
Thanks worked perfectly in just a few minutes!
If you should loose any of the small round contacts, I took a used home glucose monitor stick, scratched off the outer coating to get down to the electrical contact, cut to fit, taped it over the missing area and it works perfectly.
Bad ass!!
I love how I just stumbled upon this video. For how old it is, I finally got my key fob for my 2010 SRT8 to work.
Whwre can i buy some of those metal disks at? Or what are they called?
thank you, works perfect
Genius thanks
This is literally happening to me right now. Tore it apart, noticed the switches and contacts were not aligned. Gonna try the tape idea tonight. Problem is I have 3 buttons: lock/unlock & trunk open... but only 2 switches in the fob... will report back.
Alvin Milton make sure the missing little switch disc didn't escape when you took it apart:)
So I managed to fix it up in about 1 minute flat using your method.
I have three surviving switch disc components... lock, unlock, trunk and also panic but thats missing...
So I set it up for the buttons i use mostly and it works pretty well.
You saved me some decent money... was going to buy an alarm system + installation... because atm I need to direct those funds to the suspension.
I'll send you a six pack.

These key fobs were left over Mercedes parts when Mercedes owned Chrysler ,had a Journey with this fob and hated it
they must have tried to repair mine once and used some form of a wax to keep them in place, I thought it was dried grease, so they are supposed to be dry? then will try the tape trick.. anyone have luck activating other features by putting the discs elsewhere, like remote start etc?
The switches only operate options enabled on your vehicle. The tape works better than any adhesives I tried. Thanks for your comments.
I’m missing the domes
Thank you I never thought to use clear tape to hold the connection circles down and you saved me from hundreds of times of opening and placing them back carefully. Thank you sir.
Thank you ...you just saved me some cash! Note: One of the metal (sort of flattened?) domes was still giving me a little bit of an issue ...so I took needle nose pliers and gently buckled it to substantiate the integrity of the dome structure. Thanks again!!!
Thank you very much! As crazy as this sounds, and my wife was looking at me like I was crazy while doing this, it works. It is cheap and easy. Thanks again!!!
You sir, are a genius! I was going to hold my praise until I saw what kind of holding power this solution had, but from the comments below and my sense of how these things work, I'm giving you two unqualified thumbs up. Christmas morning must be a popular time to fix key fobs! Merry Christmas, Rich!
Thank you so much I only spent $1 on tape and $5 for a new battery and voila works again !!!!!
$300! That's how much money this video saved me! That's the cost of replacement fob for my 2016 Ram from the Dodge house in Richardson, TX. It was exactly what you described; the small metal disks had come loose and there was a strange black muck all around the inside. I cleaned and used the tape just like in the video. Thank you very much Mr. Knowles!
On mine one side is black and other side is silver. Is that normal?
Both identical. Like they are both silver on one side and both black on the opposite side. Please 🙏 help
5 years later and still found this video helpful. THANK YOU SO MUCH. 🥰🥰
Sweet I'm doing this thanks for the video my buttons same the glue isn't sticking anymore so they just move around sets alarm off don't unlock doors half the time and dealer wants like 400 even the little key part is around 40 like its a key not even chiped. thanks
A.new fob will have to be programmed by a dealer. $$$ You can buy a new fob and simply replace the green circuit board with the one from your old fob. That should work.
Just did that yesterday and it worked like a charm. New FOB with old "guts" - no programming at all. Took less than a minute and cost me about $15.
Lol that's what I'm doing now
Thanks very well said. The tape was a special additive. I found it difficult trying to glie them until i seen your video sir
Worked like a charm! My problem wasn't that the keyfob wasn't working - it was that you could barely touch it without it engaging the locks because the little discs were sliding around. Couldn't even keep it in my pocket. Magic tape to the rescue!
If you need to find these 'buttons' because you lost them they are called 'dome switches' and/or 'PCB Surface Mount Tactile Membrane Switches'.
You just saved me so much money. My truck would auto start and lock/ unlock at random times. I thought I’d have to by a new key. Thank you
Just wanted to add my own comment we also we're just having trouble with ours took it apart cleaned it use the tape to tape the pieces down cuz they were sliding around husband went out tried it we have the remote where we have a button for everything and everything work including the remote start thank you so so much for this video you saved us a lot of money at Christmas time at least $200 we are so very grateful. 😁😁😁😁
BOTH of my fobs to my 2011 Dodge Ram were super sensitive, leading to windows opening during the day, night, while at work (keys in my pocket). I've been dealing with this major inconvenience for over a year, and I was ready to order two new fobs from the dealership. I am very glad I saw this. It took about 10 minutes total to fix both fobs. They both work like new. Looks like you've helped quite a few people with this quick fix! Rich...You need to set up a PayPal link so people can send you five bucks at least!
Thanks David! I'm pleased the fix worked for you. Good idea re the PayPal submission.:)
Jim Tanis Suggest Amazon. Get a replacement fob and swap components as needed.
What parts do I swap?
A lot of people tell me, if you get a new fob, you have to have it re programmed.
Is there another way around this?
Awesome video. Thanks so much.
Thanks!! you saved me the cost of a new one - i wouldn't have thought of using tape!
Thank you so much for making this video, I have two fobs, one of them wasn’t working, and the other was starting to have the same issue. I followed your instructions and it works so well! One of the metal domes continued to not work, so if anyone else is having this issue. Cut a piece of tinfoil the same size of the dome and place it between the dome and the circuit board, then tape it down as per the instructions. Works like new.
Amy Grafe good idea! Also, you can try cleaning the contact area with a pencil eraser. Clean the metal dome as well. Removes the oxide and should work ok. Cheers!!
I tried gluing the buttons several times, but the contacts never stayed in place. Stumbled across this video which used tape instead. Very clever Rich! Worked great. Thank you for making this video!
This works. The little round silver switch buttons were sticky so after removing them I cleaned top side with Q tip and alcohol. This allowed me to replace and position them much easier using wooden toothpick. Added tape, reassembled; works like new. I think heat seems to cause the button contacts to loosen and migrate over time.
Thanks for the video! How to fix your 2012 Ram key fob with Unsolved Mysteries' Robert Stack
Glad it all worked as planned! Merry Christmas to all!!!!
wow!, you just saved me 250 dollars for new key fob. This works great. We all owe you big time. Thanks for sharing.
thank you...was looking for a glue of some kind forever, totally didn't even think of scotch tape. ^_^
Thank you so much. This was exactly what the problem was with my Dodge FOB!! I changed the battery and apparently one of the contacts came loose and it wouldn't lock any longer. It works again thanks to you!
i been trying to think of something to fix my Journey's key fob; the "dot"'s are so small. i thought of solder but then i checked the internet. 5 minutes later with tape and some small
scissors, i was testing the fob and it was working beautifully. thank you
Gary Armstrong you are very welcome!! Thanks for the comment.
My little metal buttons have some residue inside them... do I clean that too?
Probably a good idea. Use alcohol.
Thanks! My Jeep Fob unlock was being uber sensitive, the slightest brush against the key fob would unlock the car, it was so sensitive, my windows would sometimes automatically roll down! This appears to have worked perfectly!
Same, mine is for a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan and when younhold down the unlock it rolls the front two windows down so I'd come out in the morning to completely soaked seats on a rainy day..
I just wanted to say thank you. I have two key fobs. My car would beep while I was driving, beep while parked. One night it was running (triggered the remote start) at 4:30am. I took the battery out of one and it still persisted. Put the battery back in and took the other battery out. The same thing happened. My mechanic said it couldn’t be two issues with the fobs that it had to be the electric system of my Jeep. I searched google and nothing came up regarding my problem with the beeping. I searched UA-cam and all I saw about fobs was replacing the battery. I almost gave up (after scrolling about 50 videos) and something told me to check a few more. Your video was the last I checked out. My connectors kept moving around the inside of the fob. Used your idea about taping them (did it to both fobs) down and haven’t had a problem since. I BIG thank you to you. Saved me from needlessly taking it to my Jeep dealer for what seemed to be an easy fix. Thanks again
Same here would beep. Start itself. Lock itself. This video saved me about 400 bucks🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Took a little messing with but shit this worked
Nice instructional. I wish I had found your video a little sooner. I tore my key fob apart and eventually came to a similar solution as yourself but seeing this could have saved me some time. Cheers!
What is "magic" tape? Is that a specific kind of scotch tape? More sticky?
Scotch brand is best. Thicker than regular "scotch" tape and more durable. Matte finish. Suggest Googling it up. Cheers.
God dammit Rich I owe 3 lap dances and a pack of beers!👏🏼🍾
Pedro Rodriguez sold!!!
Thank you for your straightforward and simple fix for this. I have one of these and it worked intermittently for a while then gave up the ghost, so to speak, all together. I just performed your fix and it works like a charm. They local locksmith wanted $160 for the fob and $40 to program
deputybg5 hi! Glad you’re happy!! Happy New Year too!!
Smart fix! So simple its brilliant
Thanks for this video! I've been dealing with the little discs moving around for a while now. The remote starts acting up and will then start doing crazy stuff just from being in my pocket. Was getting tired of it. Never thought to just over the discs with tape. Genius. Working great now.
Worked great with my 2016 Dodge Dart SE fobik! Thank you!!! :D
Thank you friend
Wow, that idea was so much simpler (and better!) than my solution of using gorilla glue then trying solder *when* the glue failed ;)
I did what u said and it works thanks u saved me a lot of time and money👍🏽
Great video! I had to move my cousin’s truck. He was crashed out asleep. I couldn’t wake him up to move his truck. I noticed his remote wasn’t working not at all. The buttons weren’t doing nothing. I thought it was the battery. It took me and father awhile to figure out about the hidden key under the slide lock. I just thought it kept the fob clasped together. I finally moved his truck. I then proceeded to figure out why it didn’t work. I replaced the battery with another one. That didn’t work at all. I tried several times opening and closing it back up correctly. Still not working. I then decided to open once again and look at the board. The contacts were covered in gunk. As I wiped it with a q-tip to remove the gunk I noticed that contact were loose like you said they would be. I then found you video put them back in their correct places. I had to adjust the tape several times till I got it just right to unlock and lock on every press! I just used regular clear tape and it worked fine for me! Thank you for posting this it helped greatly!
Genius thank you
Thank you so much for this video. I've had an issue with one keydob from the time I bought my car and recently started having an issue with my 2nd one. Used your tips of using tape and so far all good!!
man am i glad i found this site i just fixed both of my key fob,s finger nail polish remover a q-tip take it apart clean them little round things 3 of them they work great and put tape over them to hold in place fantastic well done
Thank you
Today I was quoted $179 for the new Fobik and $65 to program it by our Dodge dealer. I watched your video, opened mine and applied the cellophane strip of tape. I was able to fix the broken one, no programming needed. Even the remote start works again. I'm thrilled, thank you!
Thank You. I had same problem and do wha You did and it work.
Last time this happened I glued them back to the other side and it didn't hold for that long, the tape has worked much better. Thank you so much! It was pretty annoying having this happen every month or two.
Can I buy the circular contact disc on its own
I'm looking for them too - Have any luck? I heard tin foil may work?
mark from lockmark of lansing michigan
the metal contacts on the circuit board look tarnished, the product called tarn-x made for cleaning metal might help to get your remote back in working order, plan b is remote cases minus the circuit board.you can buy the case only.
Ram key fob parts
thanks man!
Just a hint to y'all jb weld super weld gel glue will glue the metal to the plastic
Edit:make sure you wear gloves or you will glue your fingers together this stuff is very strong
I just did this and I must say you are amazing and just saved me over $350.00 Thank You so very much !!
Magic Tape...brilliant solution thank you!!
It works ! Thanks ! We saved $525 for 2 remotes by replacing the batteries, cleaning the contacts with a lint free cloth , and using tape to cover any contact's that were loose.
That was a very helpful video. Much appreciated.
Never thought about inverting the contact buttons, very clever. Thx.
Thanks! Good to hear.
No, he doesn't invert the contact points, even though that's how it sounds.
I used guitar shielding foil on the steel domes and taped them on with scotch tape....put it together,It works great!
Brilliant! Just did this; works fantastically! Beats trying 9 different glues, and un-centered buttons.
Does it have to be scotch tape? I tried thing still no lick.. buttons went back to clicking but no luck.. battery is new too. Any input/advice would help
Hi. Thanks for watching. I have found Scotch Magic Tape to work just fine. Make sure the buttons are UNDER the tape on their target contacts. Also make sure the battery is in correct side up/down.
Rich Knowles yes i made sure both of those. I used clear tape.. but no luck. Was working before the buttons went flying around in the remote...
Hi again@@Inline4vdub . Then I suggest removing the tape and the little contacts, wipe the surfaces with alcohol, use a pencil eraser to clean them thoroughly and remove any tarnish, wipe them again with alcohol and get some Magic Tape. Lemme know how you do. Best!
Rich Knowles hahah you are a Genius my man! Thank you sooo much!!!! I appreciate it!
If that means it worked, Great! Thanks@@Inline4vdub .
Thanks, Joe! Now all I gotta do is collect the promises! Cheers! Enjoy.
Nice work. my car alarm control has the same issue. but on mine the carbon or graphite contact is gone . when i cleaned the inside of it, most of the carbon contacts have dissolved. how do i add new carbon / graphite contacts again? thank you
Suggest purchasing a new shell from Amazon or the like. Just swap the guts.
Thank you sir, just saved 200$....
Thanks Soo much. Just Save me $250 from Dodge!!
You sir are awesome! I bought a used 2014 Ram Bighorn 1500 4x4 and it only came with one key fob. I ended up getting another as backup but the older original one started having issues with the buttons. I pulled it apart, did exactly what you showed with the contactors, placed tap over them, and boom my original key fob is working perfectly again. Thanks a ton for posting this and being a blessing to others
You are most welcome! Consider it my Christmas present to you! Cheers!!!
Awesome information working perfectly fine now
I just found your video and I'm having this problem with my new to me 2 key fobs for a 2015 Chrysler town and country. I'm hoping this works for me I just bought this and it worked when I bough it two days ago I changed the batteries in them and they still won't open the sliding doors. I pray this works because this makes me nervous to thing I have to spend hundreds of dollars for some key fob. So in advance thank you.
Best of good luck!!!
@@richknowles72 thanks
Another success!! It worked for me too!! Thank you so much! 🙏
Thanks so much, Opened it, cleaned it with an alcohol wipe, repaired as you suggested, and works perfectly now. Took all of 10 mins because I was going slow.
Glad It worked for you!
What the F is magic tape?
What does F mean? Scotch Magic Tape!
Thank you for posting Your method works perfectly.
Can I add things to this fob? Like a light bar?
Goddammit did not think of doing this until I seen this video. Brilliant!
Thank you for sharing! Helped me out! :)
Awesome, problem solved. Thanks!
Thank you works like a charm…
Thanks for the tape tip. I wouldn't have thought of that.
just saved me 250 bucks for a new key fob, that tape trick was awesome. Thank you!
You’re very welcome!
what swcrew driver did you use to take screw out having trouble
Tim Francis try small Philips
tried that. stripped screw still didnt work took to dealer and after they locked both sets of keys in truck got new keyfob
Try using eye glasses screw drivers.
It worked! Thank you very much sir.
