I remember as a kid the last friday of every month my dad would buy me a matchbox car on his way home from work. I had to search his pockets to find it. I used to get so excited to see which one i had got. I had a large box i kept them all in and play for hours. Such simple times with a simple toy. Respect to that man.
The world is a better place with collectors like this.
Not obsessed...PASSIONATE! Don't label people with negative brainwashed terms. This guy is amazing.
Nah bro. It's an obsession. 😂....he's a matchbox hoarder....😂😂😂.....not that there is anything wrong with that.....😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hairy Pot ter is a witchcraft hoarder. ✅
No, he’s obsessed. There’s a major difference in those two terms. Is he passionate? Of course. But his passion drives his obsession.
@@homie-gtv322 EXACTLY.... 😂....but it's a healthy obsession I suppose...
@@Anth230 Very healthy. I collect porn. I'm obsessd...lol
I remember when I was 3 in 1955 I was in hospital having a tonsillectomy. My dad brought me a Matchbox car which I saw poking out of his coat pocket and I remember feeling a lot better very soon .
I got the opportunity to meet Charlie and his Father at his house one evening. Such nice folks and a once in a lifetime opportunity to see his collection. Great to see him again in this amazing documentary!
Late 50's to early 60's I built up a Matchbox collection including the transporter. I remember when Hot Wheels came out and I didn't trust them. They did not have the detail of Matchbox. I joined the Navy and when I came home, my mother had tossed all my collectable toys, comic books, etc. I was devastated. I'm shocked at the value these items garner today.
When I was a kid in the early 70's I had boxes of thousands of comic books, Mad Magazine and Cracked magazines, that I had collected. We were poor, but not so poor that we couldn't spend a couple of dollars at the flea market on the weekends. My father was a mason, and when I wasn't in school he would take me to work to be a gopher for the crew. I didn't do much, mostly ran around exploring the jobsites. I guess it was just his way of giving me an allowance. But I would take most of that money and spend it on old editions of comics and magazines at flea markets and yard sales. They weren't really collectible at the time, so people were just happy to get rid of them. Sometimes they would just give me stacks for free cause of how excited I seemed to be. Lots of first and very early editions of some very popular comics. And like yourself, my mother, whom I will love eternally, threw them all away in a top to bottom house cleaning session, one summer that I was away at my uncles ranch.
In my youth I’d have laughed at people like this, but as I’ve grown older I’ve come to respect people like this so much. If you’re going to do something, do it 100%. This guy’s knowledge and collection are fascinating. Really enjoyed watching this.
So in your youth, you were a judgemental prick?
Wow this brought me back!!!
Thank you
I could watch this documentary for hours. Simply amazing. You should consider creating an extended version of it
Great to see Charlie Mack! I remember when he published Matchbox USA in the 1980s, and I subscribed for several years. A wonderful time to collect even if it wasn't as popular as in early years. I hadn't heard about him in years, so this is a real treat! I thought he left the hobby, but obviously not! Well done, Charlie!!!! You are a hero of the hobby!!!!
Matchbox from the genius, CHARLIE MACK.
What a fascinating story. He is such a nice guy.
"I'm running out of space" the five words that every collector will say at one point.
Thanks for sharing this story of this incredible Matchbox model collection! What I love about Matchbox vehicles until "Superfast" came along with their oversized crazy looking tires, was the high degree of detail that went into each diecast model. I also loved the later features that came along in the 1960s such as opening doors, engine hoods or the hydraulic piston travel such as on the Matchbox, yellow painted "Jumbo crane." Thankfully, I still have two Matchbox carrying cases totally filed with these miniature relics from my childhood past (wish I had hung onto the boxes!).
One look at the green road-roller and to me his 42,500+ collection seemed perfectly rational
This guy is magical
charlie mack runs one of the matchbox database sites
i forget which one. it's extremely useful
At 7:44 the green station wagon with the 2 dogs in the back was a big deal. If I recall correctly, it had a "tilt-to-steer" ability--if you gently pushed down on one side of the hood, the car would turn in that direction. Also if memory serves, that same car was available by mailing in box tops from breakfast cereal and they would mail the car to you. And everybody LOVED the 2 dogs in the back!
The thing that tells me all there is to know is that he was able to shrink his collection down when necessary, but he has been able to rebuild. He has a healthy relationship to his collection and collecting, even when it's this extensive.
The trademark Matchbox was originally registered by Emil and Richard Kohnstam in 1954. When Emil died Lesney were able to buy out Richard Kohnstam and the full rights to the name Matchbox and the sales rights and design registrations, the name MOKO was dropped by 1961. MOKO were the first two letters of the two names of the founder Moses Kohnstam. MOKO was a trademark of an old established firm of toy merchants, Information sourced from Matchbox Diecast Toys, The First Forty Years.
Friday afternoon my mother would pick me up from school, and we'd go shopping. If I behaved we got to visit a toy shop. Inside was a Lesney display rack of Matchbox cars and trucks, the entire set. No treasure chest could have been more beguiling.
Love it. As someone with an die-cast obsession, I admire the hardcore among us.
So passionate was I about Matchbox models in the early sixties, I exchanged correspondence with the factory on a few occasions. Still have a score of my models from back then, and most are mint, as I didn't play with them. I eventually moved up to 1/18 scale diecast models in the early eighties. Thank you for this trip down Memory Lane.
My favourite was a green mk4 Ford Cortina, I don't know what happened to it but I still remember spending hours with it as a kid in the 70's. Also remember staring at those Matchbox plastic display cases in my local toy store trying to pick the next car (we were not rich enough to have them all). That shop is a carpet shop now which is another said reflection on the changing world. Great to see this guys collection, I think men are lucky to keep part of their child's eye mind which inspires these enthusiasms.
Wow!👍😁... Nice to see someone so passionate about their collection. Lovely stuff.
I just wish Mattel played fair with Matchbox now with distribution and advertising in the UK IMHO. Shame because the brand was loved here too.
42.500 +, oh God 🥶
Respect bro
Really enjoyed watching this! My mum gave me a Wolseley 1500 and Jaguar XK140 in about 1967 when I was 3. Many years later I discovered an original boxed ERF lorry in the bottom of our wrapping paper box! I got quite fond of the Models of Yesteryear range too - even the 1970s ones in 'funky' metallic colours.
This brought back a lot of memories, what an excellent collection! Love how carefully and neatly they are displayed as well.
Wow! Fantastic documentary. What an epic collection. Thanks for making this.
Such a great video. Neat to see people who have really well done collections. It’s historical.
Perfect video, thanks.
Love when someone is so passionate about something and he seems like such a cool guy. I semi-recently started collecting 1/64 cars from Tomica Limited Vintage. Super cool and detailed little models, but I do not currently have room for 42,000 of them hahaha. Keep at it, Charlie and never stop doing what makes you happy!
That’s just incredible. What a wonderful collection. I hope you’ve got Good home Security.
If it wasn’t for guys like him I’d really know nothing about matchbox cars
Beautiful collection 👍👍🏁🏁my Welsh grandad got me into collecting diecast models 45 years later i have 15thousand models nearly every brand from most countries in the world 🌎 My late German father never complained about my hobbie i went to second hand Shop to look at beautiful Glass cabinet i seen day before my dismay sold sticker i went home father said i found a great glass cabinet today in second hand Shop bought it for my boy Best hobbie in the world Cheers Stephen 👍✌️🏁🏁🏁🏁
This documentary was amazing! What an awesome guy! I could watch this for hours listening to all the facts and seeing more of his collection! Im not even into matchbox but this was fascinating to watch
I have my personal toys collection and yes matchbox are still my favorite diecast toy cars
Very cool!
Really really enjoyed this!!!
Genius collector
Thank you.. I never thought about Matchbox's story. This video is an awesome find! What a nostalgic joyride through the miniature highways of my boyhood. Those tiny 1:64 scale cars were my sanity superheroes, swooping in to rescue my mental well-being more often than I'd like to admit! They're the real heroes of the bed comforter racetrack!
An absolutely amazing collection and dedication to collecting these cars.
Great interviewing and questions surrounding the collection.
An amazing collection of a wonderful toy. Ironic that so many tiny vehicles are worth more than the new full size originals were.
This is awesome Charlie! Congratulations! When it comes to Matchbox... Charlie is The Man! No one better!
Wow! I’m speechless.
Love your collection.. I have a small collection too.
Brilliant video, great to see someone with such a strong passion for something.
I know some of my old 80's Matchbox cars are in my kids room. I'll be looking through them now 😂
This guy is genius
11:20 I have No15 Dennis Refuse Truck seen in that catalog, sitting in front of me right now, in half-decent condition. No plastic interior not even any plastic glass in the cab, they didn't do it then. No idea what its worth.
Oh and Charlie Mack must be an absolute authority on "Matchbox" probably the biggest and baddest in the world today. Sheer passion!
Love his Passion!!!
Back in 1980 as a 10 year old my pocket would be just enough for the Beano comic some sweets and a weekly payment of 50p on whatever matchbox toy car I fancied ,,,I’ve just gone and looked a couple up that I remember ,I gave them all to my son a few years back now ,,god knows where they are now ,,,but at least they were loved and used ,,,great childhood memories
What a fantastic collection and I remember most of them and still have some. But I've got to the age where I'm thinking about the dusting involved!!!
With my brother our best childhood memories are the ones with matchbox
Oh wow, incredible collection. I really enjoyed watching . Thank you very much for sharing. Have a great weekend.
Increíble !! Buenísimo !

Amazing collection!
Collecting diecast is always a good thing ;-)
Great keep collecting👍
... WOW! Amazing!
Great documentary! I love the Matchbox books of Charlie Mack and was excited to hear him in person. Thank you for these amazing books, sir!
Incredible ! ! 🔥
Fantastic! That brings back so many memories of cars that I own/owned/wanted to own. I remember keeping mine in boxes, until I finally got one of the Collector Cases of the times, then threw them away. 😞 However, I still have the cars (only around 90 of them though). My favourite memory is from 1966. When my younger brother was born, I remember Dad handing me a Dodge Wreck Truck (BP tow truck) when we were leaving the hospital and telling me that it was from my baby brother. Thanks for sharing this, best wishes from New Zealand.
Awesome!
I really appreciate this video, well done my friend, what a great collection 👍🇨🇦
Thank you great explanation on the history of matchbox.
🙏🏻
Beautiful
it'd had been nice to hear some suggestions for collectors that have spent some time in this hobby and for the new ones also. Thank you for sharing!
I was a HUGE fan of the collector’s series matchbox cars w the rubber tires. They were insanely detailed. And I loved it as a kid.
Wonderful ,,, enjoyed every minute
jeez, I lived a half mile from this guy and never went to his museum. I should have.
Im gonna be 66 and still love and collect matchbox..but only the early models..
So nice to see someone so passionate about a thing. What a collection! 😎👍🏻🚀

Mind blowing Matchbox collection lovely story👍👍👍
That was a great little documentary
Great video! Thanks from Stockholm 🇸🇪
Nice collection 🔥
Matchbox is in the song Little Things by TOTO ❤ a really beautiful song about what life's about. My first die cast was a Matchbox in 79 but I lost it because i was just a kid and i remember riding it. imagine King Kong putting his foot in an entire car 😂.
Love It

Awesome
Gorman, I loved your question about instances where the box is worth more than the car. Brilliant question, and fascinating answer!
🤩
Never give up your collecting journey!

Really took me back to my Childhood thanks for sharing.
🙏🏻
A very interesting film. 👍
Very cool.
Great collection and video Thank you
❤️
very impressive
We went to the Matchbox Museum in New Jersey back in April.. I'd love to share a link to our video on my channel, but can't, obviously. Those guys are INSANE with their collection too... Thx for sharing Charlie !!
What a marvelous man. Westernkind is amazing.
I had two double cases i left behind when we moved states in 1974. Mum would take me to the toy shop every couple of weeks. 😢
I like all my Matchbox.. I bought like 60 or so in 1983 at Toys R Us. Still have them all in the unopened packages with the Toys R Us price tag still on. 😂. I bought them because it thought they were going to be out of business.. But looks like my collection is the 1st year of the new company name.
42,500 wow amazing 👏😮
