I have been to several police K9 unit demonstration in Europe, the trainer tells the dog where to hold (wrist, ankle, thigh) and the dog holds, never ever bites. If the dog bites, handler is harshly reprimanded and dog is retired from police work and retrained. The purpose is to have obedient dogs who do the job, not menaces who are unable to do the job correctly.

My aunt used to watch him and take care of him and one day she went to take him home and his mom was passed out drunk and unresponsive so she took him back with her. Ended up getting temp custody while his mom went through treatment. She never finished her treatment cuz her own sponsor couldn't stand her and got him back anyway. When he was 4 he said his mom scared him and he didn't want to live with her, but he was too young to decide who he lived with. He was "old enough" at 11 and of course an 11 year old boy is gonna choose a neglectful drunk and living with no rules compared to having a stable home with his grandmother, but also expectations about school work and behavior. It's horrible.

Yeah I mean the dogs should definitely be properly trained to let go when their handler says so (although its still an animal at the end of the day), but I don't see the issue with the decision to use the dog considering he had already tried to kill his victim in front of his kids, opened fire at the police, and they didn't know if he was disarmed or disabled.

The problem with the dog in this situation is the suspect was already incapacitated. He couldn’t even crawl let alone run away. There was no need for the dog to hold on to him any way. It’s the last thing he should’ve done.
Not to say I don’t get it. He just got shot at and was in a police chase. The adrenaline is through the roof and you’re making split second decisions. But there was 0 reason to get the dog out. It was only because he could.

And again I GET IT. I understand why he would do that in that situation but it doesn’t make it ok.

Agreed. He had already fired at the officers, after attempting to m*rder his wife in front of his children, and they had no way of knowing if he was disarmed or disabled. I dont see the issue with using the dog in this case. The dog should be properly trained to release when their handler says so but it's still an animal at the end of the day and agreed, it shouldn't impact his sentencing or what he did at all.

Kids are so much smarter than we give them credit.. and so so resilient when given the love and safe space to process.
Some helpful background info - I’ve been a licensed clinical social worker for 13 years. I used to work in CPS and had to sit-in a ton of these interviews - there’s usually a one way window for detectives and social workers to sit and observe. No matter how many I observed, they never got easier.. The interviewers don’t know any details before they meet with the child. They’re usually told their name, age, and the main theme (type of a**$*). They aren’t told a lot about the situation for good reason - detectives want these interviews to be admissible in court and they have to make sure the child was never coerced to say something specific.
