@@kaguario He was 100% unconscious. They even added a flash of his raising his hand in the classroom to make it even more clear from how it was done in the manga. We can debate whether Erwin would have actually wanted to get the injection, but there's 0 indication that he was aware of what was going on at that moment.
It also helped Levi realise that proving his father was correct was Erwin's goal, not saving humanity. Erwin had fought his last battle, sacrificed many lives and got them to the basement. Now it's time for someone with a bigger goal to lead.

We literally saw his dream and heard him talk out loud about it, had he been concious enough to reject the syringe (or even know what is going on) he would've said something regarding the situation instead of raising his hand to ask a question to his dad. Dude was having a nice peaceful dream and it made Levi not want to wake him up and return him to the hell that was his world since Erwin had resolved to die and give up his dream, compared to Armin who still had hope.

Yes he is smart, but for Someone with so much experience and smarts, he's always outsmarted by the young and inexperienced Armin, so yeah Erwin is really smart, but with time Armin can become much better

The soldier that survived the beast titan's attack had a good point, humanity needs someone like a Erwin ( a devil) in order to beat the titans. If I was Levi I would have chosen Erwin, yes I know that Erwin was suffering and had a huge burden on his back but he is still the most efficient leader we have. btw, Eren's voice actor is fucking amazing.

It's insane how so many people think erwin refused it, you really have to not focus on every frame you see to not figure out that he was raising his hand before he was reliving what he did when he was a kid asking his teacher (father) about humanity past while he was unconscious. Same for floch, he wasn't crazy at all. He wasn't insulting Erwin AT ALL. It's insane how some people are not willing to look deeper into such a great story, I guess game of thrones season 8 righting doesn't ask much but this story is something else.

Watching bertholdt die was really sad but I guess, necessary. Although after reading the manga I sympathize with him nearly just as much as the protagonists.
Was waiting all day for this!!!!!! Last episode ("Hero") was the best AOT episode ever imo & this one was amazing as well!!! The voice actors did an incredible job in this one!! Best VA I've ever heard!! Props to them!!!! They made the episode so emotional, especially Eren & when Mikasa was crying while Hange was holding her back. 😭💔

About the whole Bertholdt thing. My take on it is this. When you are at war, lets say youre on side A and the enemy is on side B. Its generally understandable why A could hate B and enjoy theyre suffering for any misdeads they did in the past. But you see AoT does it very interestingly, reason being that we have no connection or understanding of the enemies perspective or motivation, and only someone with understanding of the nature of war can accept that soldiers have to do what they have to do. Relish in youre vicotry or quake in defeat, its all part of war and any side can ask the most unreasonable things of theyre soldiers. In my oppinion people always have the capabilities and with added reason can hate and excact righteous actions in tandem, but it takes understanding not to enjoy the misery of another person (though the storytelling itslef i did enjoy :D). Dont misunderstand I enjoyed youre reactions, as i love different input of other people. The next few episodes are gonna be interesting and hopefully give more clarity and perspective. Anyway cant wait to see you see whats next! :)
Yeah, a lot of people neglect to consider the enemy's motivations in this show. Bert and Reiner have stated many times that they really don't want to do what they're doing, but they HAVE to. Bert especially clearly shows basic morals, as does Annie (Reiner not as much). Instead of empathising and trying to understand where they're coming from, everyone just hates them and wants them to die a painful death lol. Though I suppose that's also understandable after everything they've done

You only inherit memories if you eat a Titan shifter and take their power, like when Eren ate Grisha. Rod Reiss never had the royal Titan/the coordinate, it was his daughter Frieda who did. Frieda was eaten by Grisha, who was eaten by Eren. So the royal memories live on in Eren.
Reiner is the God Armor Titan. four more episodes. I always liked Reiner, but he became my favourite character after I read the season 4 story arc. Also, the next episode is called "basement", so you're gonna get a lot of exposition. I would therefore advise you to wait until the arc is over before you start to read the manga, Marketa. Also, when Erwin bats away the syringe with his hand, it might be because he was delirious and thought he was back in class as a kid, asking a question to the teacher - his father. Did he refure the syringe, or did Levi make the decision for him?
Honestly fuck Reiner. I just hate his survivability and how he always survives but never seems to adapt as a titan. As a human he has development and whatnot but his skills as a titan. God damn it Marcel. It's all his fault.

No other shifter has shown the ability to do so. On the other hand, it has never been stated that the ability is exclusive to the armor shifter. He might not be the best titan out there, but he is by far the coolest-looking.
"Let me advise you because I read a comic" I've read a bit of the manga and its great, but once I saw the anime I stopped - I liked having those genuine "wow" moments with buds, as oppose to sitting there knowing exactly whats about to happen displaying emotions that don't match the scene, busy looking at peoples reactions instead of focusing on the moment. Reading a Manga tends to give people this "Superiority" feeling, guess its all they have to make themselves feel "on top". But its not inaccessible, its not special, its something you can view through a simple google. But with Animation quality like this, the voice acting, the fluidity, MUCH better than the manga.

guys gather all the crew for the next 2 episodes. You are really not ready for what is coming. The best revelation ever for any tv show (anime or not). The storytelling is so good that you'll want to rewatch all the show to notice all the piece of dialogue or details of the history within the wall.

I was not ready for this episode even despite being a manga reader. The voice acting, the direction, the emotion. It was just unbelievable. This episode broke me. Especially the part when Erwin said, "Levi, thank you." That's all he needed to hear. When Mikasa started crying and Hange reflecting on how she wanted to also save others.. hundreds of them. I was in tears. Attack on Titan, you have outdid yourselves.

Well, I think nobody DESERVES to die. Whatever reasons Bertholdt may have had, he is still a human being..just like us...the anime does a great job at portraying what conditions human beings created for him to go to such far lengths...it is the conditions in which he was born and raised that led him to take such actions....even if you accept it or not, anybody could have been him...it is because of the conditions in which they are born and raised do they take actions accordingly...Eren is Eren, Mikasa is Mikasa, Armin is Armin and Erwin is Erwin because of the things they saw, though everybody takes in things differently otherwise, they would all be the same person...but we can't judge who is good or evil based on that..the anime just portrays the different shades of a human being...we also can't judge whether it should have been Armin or Erwin, because both of them are really good at their own places and we can't do it without any of them to handle certain situations but we had to lose someone and Levi choose Armin not because he would add more to the hope to save humanity but because he couldn't see his friend suffer...and so Bertholdt had to die...and I am really satisfied with the writing...it was really a great episode..Erwin died, Armin came back..the scene was really emotional...one getting life by killing another who was a comrade. We really can't, I mean I really can't enjoy that death.

What the hell are y’all talking about? Up until this point Bert is known as a villainous traitor who destroyed Wall Maria and killed a lot of people. What has he done at this point in the show to gain any sympathy towards viewers? Who cares if he’s 16 it doesn’t justify all the deaths he let happen. Sure he has his own justified reasons for doing what he did but us viewers at this point in the show don’t know that. So their enjoyment of his death is pretty reasonable idk what you guys are talking about
I feel like Levi's choice had almost nothing to do with optimism or hope, i think the main reason was drive. All Erwin wanted was knowledge that what his father died for was not a lie. So Erwin's dreams or goals would have ended at that basement, where he would realize his dream, then he wouldn't have had anything to be "drunk off of" to continue living. But Armin's dream was to see the ocean, so I believe his dreams would have carried him/them/humanity much father then that basement.
Glad that someone finally mentioned this. Rewatching reactions and all the comments seem to be about Levi just not wanting Erwin to suffer. That may have been what he was feeling inside, but I think that the whole point about drive was pretty monumental to his decision too

No opening, there's no OST and just silence for the most part, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath! The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji (Eren) and Yui (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking. God-tier voice-acting indeed!! Loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end. The same with Levi with Erwin. It's why in the end, I couldn't really fault anyone for the way they acted during all of this. In the end, one of them was going to die and it was essentially "reasons why MY friend deserves to live more". Loved how it came full circle in a way with what Kenny said when it came to Levi picking Armin or Erwin. The way I saw it, Armin had a real dream and aspirations whereas Erwin was more driven by an obsession. Armin's ambitions surpassed Erwin's and was more long-term compared to what Erwin really wanted. That and Levi finally freed Erwin from his sense of responsibilities for those mountain of corpses he was hallucinating. Kenny basically alluded to the fact that death frees people from the hell of spending the rest of their lives being a slave to something. Bringing back Erwin would've brought him back to hell, and he really deserves to rest. Overall, it was really nice to see Kenny having a lasting effect on Levi here. Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Just ouch. Sayonara Erwin, Bertholdt, Moblit, Marlo, all the scouts, and Hange's left eye...

I dont think in the anime, erwin declined the serum. Seems he was suffering from delirium and kinda dreamt of his childhood ambition of proving what was beyond the walls, which was why he raised his hands, to ask his teacher that question. Levi saw how erwin was forced to become the "devil" as a result of pursuing his ambition and how he almost broke down during their final conversation, decided to let him rest.
Bertolt had to go, but I feel pity for his demise. The people in the wall needed the God of Destruction in their arsenal...for the enemy ahead. But I still feel for bertolt. Wouldn't take happiness in his death Nahid justttttt yeeeeet til you find out the basement...maybe you'll feel a little differently. RIP Moblit tho?! Manga reader talking. This show will tug your heart strings lol and make you question what yall just talked about. I say for yall yo get some drinks for the next episode The Basement!!!
Honestly this is the TV show I've watched that handles war in such a complex and balanced way. Like Bertholt's explosion is obviously reminiscent of the nuclear blast that hit Japan and he's killed hundreds of thousands, but at the end of the day, he's just a kid who had no idea what he was doing (observe he, Reiner and Annie discussing their course of action in the freakin' open as if no one would possibly eavesdrop on them. And Marco does, twice!).
Btw that flash forward scene from the first part of season 3 that Chris was talking about, was this episode. Hope someone informs you guys or you find out some other way :)
Paul Tibbets and Charles Sweeney dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing far more people than Bertholdt and Reiner ever did. Did they deserve Bertholdt's fate? Not hating, just showing perspective.
Including a no name recruit like Floch to the conversation is a really well written meta device to remind Eren and Mikasa (and even the viewers in a way) of the amount of suffering anyone who's survived is dealing with, with them finding out only Levi, Erwin (barely) and Floch survived on the other side of the wall. This is only increased when Hange explains her side having lost many comrades in battle as a veteran of the scouts and losing Moblit in this battle. That Eren and Mikasa would be selfish if they used the serum just to save Armin because he's their friend. They have to think bigger picture here and make the same sacrifices everyone else has. Especially when their superior officers (Hange and Levi) are disagreeing with them. Really well done how the decision is made, how Erwin would probably be a broken husk of a man after seeing the basement when Armin clearly had loftier and more positive goals with the matching intellect to lead. The episode is also amazing in how they used silence to carry the atmosphere and the incredible job of the voice actors being put on full display. Bravo Studio Wit, can't wait for next week.
I like that AoT encourages its characters to be selfish. It's human and a lot more real. Erwin caring so much for his persuit of the truth that he's willing to let others die to reach it, Eren and Mikasa willing to forgo Erwin's life to save their best friend, and (manga spoilers) a certain character massacring a great amount of innocents in order to protect those he loves. It's brilliant and human writing that really ties this series together.
Its all about honoring Erwin sacrifice. Not much about Armin. His dream would never end. After the basement he would want more awnsers. He would never rest. Bringing him back would disrespect everything he sacrificed.

The writing is so beautiful. The whole point was they were both very valuable to humanity, but Erwin's dreams stopped at the basement. Armin's reached beyond the wall and stretched as far as the ocean. In the end, Armin would do more for the future. 10/10

@@BhBc8f8 it was steam, so it may have destroyed the outer layers of his skin but once he passes out he is no longer breathing, meaning his tiny little air sacks (alveoli) were not exposed to the intense heat. So he suffered severe life ending skin trauma, but this isnt an instant kill. What shocks me though is that fall, he fell from 50 meters onto the tip of a roof.. now that I can see killing him instantly I mean who survives a 50 meter fall after being scorched? Yikes

We can debate whether Erwin would have actually wanted to get the injection, but there's 0 indication that he was aware of what was going on at that moment.
It also helped Levi realise that proving his father was correct was Erwin's goal, not saving humanity. Erwin had fought his last battle, sacrificed many lives and got them to the basement. Now it's time for someone with a bigger goal to lead.

Was waiting all day for this!!!!!! Last episode ("Hero") was the best AOT episode ever imo & this one was amazing as well!!! The voice actors did an incredible job in this one!! Best VA I've ever heard!! Props to them!!!! They made the episode so emotional, especially Eren & when Mikasa was crying while Hange was holding her back. 😭💔

About the whole Bertholdt thing. My take on it is this. When you are at war, lets say youre on side A and the enemy is on side B. Its generally understandable why A could hate B and enjoy theyre suffering for any misdeads they did in the past. But you see AoT does it very interestingly, reason being that we have no connection or understanding of the enemies perspective or motivation, and only someone with understanding of the nature of war can accept that soldiers have to do what they have to do. Relish in youre vicotry or quake in defeat, its all part of war and any side can ask the most unreasonable things of theyre soldiers. In my oppinion people always have the capabilities and with added reason can hate and excact righteous actions in tandem, but it takes understanding not to enjoy the misery of another person (though the storytelling itslef i did enjoy :D). Dont misunderstand I enjoyed youre reactions, as i love different input of other people. The next few episodes are gonna be interesting and hopefully give more clarity and perspective. Anyway cant wait to see you see whats next! :)

Yeah, a lot of people neglect to consider the enemy's motivations in this show. Bert and Reiner have stated many times that they really don't want to do what they're doing, but they HAVE to. Bert especially clearly shows basic morals, as does Annie (Reiner not as much). Instead of empathising and trying to understand where they're coming from, everyone just hates them and wants them to die a painful death lol. Though I suppose that's also understandable after everything they've done

You only inherit memories if you eat a Titan shifter and take their power, like when Eren ate Grisha. Rod Reiss never had the royal Titan/the coordinate, it was his daughter Frieda who did. Frieda was eaten by Grisha, who was eaten by Eren. So the royal memories live on in Eren.

Also, the next episode is called "basement", so you're gonna get a lot of exposition. I would therefore advise you to wait until the arc is over before you start to read the manga, Marketa. Also, when Erwin bats away the syringe with his hand, it might be because he was delirious and thought he was back in class as a kid, asking a question to the teacher - his father. Did he refure the syringe, or did Levi make the decision for him?

I've read a bit of the manga and its great, but once I saw the anime I stopped - I liked having those genuine "wow" moments with buds, as oppose to sitting there knowing exactly whats about to happen displaying emotions that don't match the scene, busy looking at peoples reactions instead of focusing on the moment.
Reading a Manga tends to give people this "Superiority" feeling, guess its all they have to make themselves feel "on top". But its not inaccessible, its not special, its something you can view through a simple google.
But with Animation quality like this, the voice acting, the fluidity, MUCH better than the manga.

unbelievable. This episode broke me. Especially the part when Erwin said,
"Levi, thank you." That's all he needed to hear. When Mikasa started
crying and Hange reflecting on how she wanted to also save others.. hundreds of
them. I was in tears. Attack on Titan, you have outdid yourselves.
The use of barely no music at all and no intro theme was well done for the entire atmosphere of the episode.

Well, I think nobody DESERVES to die. Whatever reasons Bertholdt may have had, he is still a human being..just like us...the anime does a great job at portraying what conditions human beings created for him to go to such far lengths...it is the conditions in which he was born and raised that led him to take such actions....even if you accept it or not, anybody could have been him...it is because of the conditions in which they are born and raised do they take actions accordingly...Eren is Eren, Mikasa is Mikasa, Armin is Armin and Erwin is Erwin because of the things they saw, though everybody takes in things differently otherwise, they would all be the same person...but we can't judge who is good or evil based on that..the anime just portrays the different shades of a human being...we also can't judge whether it should have been Armin or Erwin, because both of them are really good at their own places and we can't do it without any of them to handle certain situations but we had to lose someone and Levi choose Armin not because he would add more to the hope to save humanity but because he couldn't see his friend suffer...and so Bertholdt had to die...and I am really satisfied with the writing...it was really a great episode..Erwin died, Armin came back..the scene was really emotional...one getting life by killing another who was a comrade. We really can't, I mean I really can't enjoy that death.

I feel like Levi's choice had almost nothing to do with optimism or hope, i think the main reason was drive. All Erwin wanted was knowledge that what his father died for was not a lie. So Erwin's dreams or goals would have ended at that basement, where he would realize his dream, then he wouldn't have had anything to be "drunk off of" to continue living. But Armin's dream was to see the ocean, so I believe his dreams would have carried him/them/humanity much father then that basement.
Glad that someone finally mentioned this. Rewatching reactions and all the comments seem to be about Levi just not wanting Erwin to suffer. That may have been what he was feeling inside, but I think that the whole point about drive was pretty monumental to his decision too

No opening, there's no OST and just silence for the most part, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath!
The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji (Eren) and Yui (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking. God-tier voice-acting indeed!!
Loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end. The same with Levi with Erwin. It's why in the end, I couldn't really fault anyone for the way they acted during all of this. In the end, one of them was going to die and it was essentially "reasons why MY friend deserves to live more".
Loved how it came full circle in a way with what Kenny said when it came to Levi picking Armin or Erwin. The way I saw it, Armin had a real dream and aspirations whereas Erwin was more driven by an obsession. Armin's ambitions surpassed Erwin's and was more long-term compared to what Erwin really wanted. That and Levi finally freed Erwin from his sense of responsibilities for those mountain of corpses he was hallucinating. Kenny basically alluded to the fact that death frees people from the hell of spending the rest of their lives being a slave to something. Bringing back Erwin would've brought him back to hell, and he really deserves to rest. Overall, it was really nice to see Kenny having a lasting effect on Levi here.
Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Just ouch.
Sayonara Erwin, Bertholdt, Moblit, Marlo, all the scouts, and Hange's left eye...

Honestly this is the TV show I've watched that handles war in such a complex and balanced way. Like Bertholt's explosion is obviously reminiscent of the nuclear blast that hit Japan and he's killed hundreds of thousands, but at the end of the day, he's just a kid who had no idea what he was doing (observe he, Reiner and Annie discussing their course of action in the freakin' open as if no one would possibly eavesdrop on them. And Marco does, twice!).
Save Armin is good choice. But however Erwin is a great commander. They miss him.

Paul Tibbets and Charles Sweeney dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing far more people than Bertholdt and Reiner ever did. Did they deserve Bertholdt's fate? Not hating, just showing perspective.
Also bertholdt was a child when he transform into the colossal Titan and broke the wall.

Including a no name recruit like Floch to the conversation is a really well written meta device to remind Eren and Mikasa (and even the viewers in a way) of the amount of suffering anyone who's survived is dealing with, with them finding out only Levi, Erwin (barely) and Floch survived on the other side of the wall. This is only increased when Hange explains her side having lost many comrades in battle as a veteran of the scouts and losing Moblit in this battle.
That Eren and Mikasa would be selfish if they used the serum just to save Armin because he's their friend. They have to think bigger picture here and make the same sacrifices everyone else has. Especially when their superior officers (Hange and Levi) are disagreeing with them.
Really well done how the decision is made, how Erwin would probably be a broken husk of a man after seeing the basement when Armin clearly had loftier and more positive goals with the matching intellect to lead.
The episode is also amazing in how they used silence to carry the atmosphere and the incredible job of the voice actors being put on full display.
Bravo Studio Wit, can't wait for next week.
I like that AoT encourages its characters to be selfish. It's human and a lot more real. Erwin caring so much for his persuit of the truth that he's willing to let others die to reach it, Eren and Mikasa willing to forgo Erwin's life to save their best friend, and (manga spoilers) a certain character massacring a great amount of innocents in order to protect those he loves. It's brilliant and human writing that really ties this series together.
In the end, Levi chose Armin because he felt more for Erwin
Its all about honoring Erwin sacrifice. Not much about Armin.
His dream would never end. After the basement he would want more awnsers. He would never rest. Bringing him back would disrespect everything he sacrificed.

I don’t believe Erwin declined it! He wasn’t conscious and was thinking of his childhood. That’s why when he put his hand up, it showed his kid self hand. Erwin was finally put out of his misery and Levi realized that. I don’t think Erwin declined the syringe

The writing is so beautiful. The whole point was they were both very valuable to humanity, but Erwin's dreams stopped at the basement. Armin's reached beyond the wall and stretched as far as the ocean. In the end, Armin would do more for the future. 10/10

@@BhBc8f8 it was steam, so it may have destroyed the outer layers of his skin but once he passes out he is no longer breathing, meaning his tiny little air sacks (alveoli) were not exposed to the intense heat.
So he suffered severe life ending skin trauma, but this isnt an instant kill.
What shocks me though is that fall, he fell from 50 meters onto the tip of a roof.. now that I can see killing him instantly I mean who survives a 50 meter fall after being scorched? Yikes

It’s frightening to know there’s a possibility he conducted the suicide charge knowing Levi would automatically inject him with the serum when he died.

erwin didn't decline the injection. he was unconscious the whole time. he was having a flashback to him raising his hand in class to ask the teacher (his dad) about life outside the walls. if you look back at the scene you'll see what im talking about.
Erwin didn't decline the syringe he was going having a fever dream, and Levi wasn't being unemotional he loves Erwin as much as Mikasa love Eren.
Your correct on the first part, but idk about the second. It's kinf of common sense or being realistic, who would you be forced to keep alive as a soldier, the commander of the whole army, or a soilder who's in army?

i like how the decision didn't come down to who was more able as a soldier, thinker, or leader cause erwin and armin are both very capable. It came down to whose time was it to just rest.

when i was watching while it was airing it was so intense resonated for a week i watched it for every day untill the next ep comes ,In this ep there no background music until armin comes (anybody knew)so that we can immense with the characters more it seems it worked for me so much for me

it's so shit, in the dub they changed his famous Humanity Vs Titans line to our side vs other side. I hate Americans who are scared of other languages. They are like Trumpturds.

It seems you're the one that is scared of content being translated differently, which can make certain scenes resonate in different ways, making both versions good as stand-alone content.
I read the manga already but I still cried from this scene. Kuddos to the animators/studio for not letting us down.
