    Appreciate the work as always. I realize it’s an unpopular opinion but I think the story is leagues better than the first but is told in a more confusing and fragmented way. It might be because I’m very into that period of history so I know a good 80% of the characters already but seeing how the mosaic all fit together by the end of the final DLC, and seeing what comprised the legend of ‘Hideyoshi’ in this universe was actually quite moving for me. Fortunately it’s entirely vestigial to the main draws of the game!

    There are several armor sets in Nioh 2 exclusive to the late floors of the underworld.
    You start fighting bosses in pairs or 3 in a roll later on. More reused Nioh 1 boss, which I didn't mind because I didn't play Nioh 1.
    I really enjoyed the Underworld in Nioh 2 overall. I felt challenged by it in ways previous difficulties couldn't and basically ended up mastering the game with my preferred weapon, the Splitstaff.
    What I did not like was the loot frequency. Even if you use the filter to only pick up Orange rarity weapons, you still get like 100 per floor. With a 600 inventory limit, it fills up fast and takes you away from the action to soul match, store weapons, etc. I had a particular bad personality for dealing with this so I was always agonizing over what to keep

    On Demon+ difficulty game expects you to use confusion mechanic actually. Hence the hp scaling. As for yokai forms, Brute counter can counter all attacks, but need to trade with some. Phantom/Feral can't counter some attacks at all. Generally you need to run Feral/Phantom+Brute, because game expects you to switch between the two on the fly during combat to counter.

    • @oninomiru
      @oninomiru 10 місяців тому +5

      @mpurratorapply 2 elements on the enemy. Bonus points if you can apply water (20% defence reduction) and then add for example purity, which creates confusion (50% defence reduction, for total 70% if you applied water too). Demons won't enter dark realm if confusion is applied right before you deplete their ki too for the full duration and will be unable to regenerate ki, humans regenerate ki very slowly. Can keep adding 1 element to refresh duration. Keep in mind corruption and purity negate each other, so they don't cause confusion, although you can apply purity and let's say fire to start confusion and then add corruption to refresh confusion (purity status will go away tho). So you can easily go Purity+ Water > (confusion) > Fire > Lightning > Corruption.

    Phenomenal review. I just started Nioh 2 recently, and I’m currently around level 80 (early/mid game, I suppose). Having a lot of fun… I really enjoy the visceral/impactful combat & initial challenge. However, I will admit that missions do seem to become rather repetitive (even at my point in the game), making me wonder whether or not I would really want to sink “hundreds” of hours into it. Interesting that it seems that the game doesn’t even truly start until NG+ and on. I’ve played/completed every souls game & love this genre. I still look forward to picking it up and playing at for 1-2 hours at a time. Thx for the review!! 💪🏻🔥👍😎

    Pretty faithful review, I think you covered a lot of things, I'd just say to anyone who hasn't played it and thinking on getting it, how engaging the combat is, is based on your decisions. If you stick in one stance and use the same string or move constantly it's on you if the game starts to feel stale. They give you many many tools to play around with and turn into the perfect ninja gaiden blender we were in Ninja garden 2. I don't think I saw him ki pulse once in the video. Not knocking his play style to each their own, he even stated he brute forced it, but don't sell yourself short on experimenting with what you are good with or get good with. I'm sure this guy's brain woulda came up with some crazy plays if he gave himself the opportunity to.

  • @alteraphim
    @alteraphim 10 місяців тому +37

    One thing to mention about how the game feels on PC vs PS4. The game(s) have a certain release cadence that plays into both how they ARE designed and how they WERE played. Often there were months in between releases, with each release bringing in a new difficulty level in addition to the new missions. The hope with these games is that you'll spend time in each difficulty creating, changing, or refining your build. If this is done the health bloat is much less noticeable (no boss will take more than 3-5 minutes for someone who does this with one of the many 'endgame' builds). When this is not done, everything feels like a slog, and the bloat can be overwhelming. Nioh2 released with all DLC available on PC so there wasn't a built-in wait between each difficulty. Additionally, this game also takes the 'pick one move and make it awesome' idea from ARPGs in addition to the loot explosions. Mortismal's gameplay does not show them using the high damage moves often. With the axe, this would have the player seeing high damage hits more often and in multiples (11k for single and 3-5k for combos on dotw). Nioh 2 (compared to the first game) is much less forgiving to those who don't adapt to this style of combat, and it would behoove new players to find a build they like from guides online (Or identify a fun move and find gear to support). This does mean if you're someone who likes to find their own way through games that you will probably have a worse time than someone who found a build they enjoyed online. Finally, while ninjutsu was incredibly broken in the first game, it is much more reigned in for this iteration, while Onmyo has gone from mediocre to amazing in its stead. All of the good builds online use some aspects of both to buff themselves or debuff the enemy, so expect to have your specialized weapon backed up by a general support package from Ninjutsu/Onmyo. Great review nonetheless.

    I really enjoyed Tokichiro when I played Nioh 2. Mainly because of his overall outlook on the world. He doesn't want to fight and kill, he hates that shit. You are first introduced to him by him showing up and saving you from a demon rage, and quelling your anger. Then you see his main motivation is profit, but he's not evil about it. He just wants to be wealthy, and would like to do it without anyone dying. And this is reinforced in a later mission, when you are trying to get wood to build a fortress for your lord. It didn't really hit me until that scene, when you fight the forest spirit and beat it, and then Toki rushes up and purges the corruption from the spirit. The look of satisfaction and joy on his face as he sees the spirit going back to it's normal state, without the evil corruption, genuinely touched me. Especially when the other main character shows up next to him and asks "What is this then?" And he proudly proclaims "Victory! The Tokichiro way! Where nobody has to die!" And i dunno, just something about that just made me love him. I'm always a fan of non-violent, pacifist characters and games that allow for that option. I know it's not how Nioh works as a game overall, but for Tokichiro, it IS how he tries to operate. And then at the end of the game, when a particular fight is going on, and he's helping you, it was just done so well that I thought it was an awesome way to portray the character.

    Then now we are gonna have "Rise of The Ronin" that seems to be a culmination of everything that they have been making fro the last decade or so, even more added with open world style. It would be very interesting what they could come up with endgame & NG+ contents for that game 'cause I am sure many of their fans would prefer harder difficulties, more so than mainstream format.

      Nioh 2 > Strangers of Paradise > Wo long. Nioh 2 only flaw was the build grinding. SOP fixed that with the option transfer effects piece to piece made jobs the set. but it suffered with the lack of maps and things to kill. Wo long had more enemies but besides the first boss and Lu bu the game was easy plus the sets weren't that useful bcs at first graces were barely dropping. ( The most dumbest idea was making dodge and parry being the same button. ) ROTR scares me because there's is no demon pokemon or magic skills, along with them trying to compete with FS making it open world. Nioh 3 and strangers 2 will be received better if they ever make them.

When I first tried the game I rage quit because I could not even beat the first yokai but once I beat Sekiro I told myself it'd be ridiculous if I could beat that and not even pass the first level in Nioh 2! So I learned the skills from PooferLlama online and now it's tied for my favourite soulslike (likely favourite games period) with Sekiro. If you're struggling check out Poofer's videos and keep persistent. Learning to master this game is one of the cleanest flow states I've ever jived with

    Rather than knowing singular historical figures, to follow Nioh 1's story unaided you basically need a solid grip on like 30 years of the Sengoku period.
    To use the American Revolution as a comparison point, you'd probably need to be able to describe all the significant battles in order, name most of the generals and big names involved + their most important character traits too... So like, when Benedict Arnold would come back as vengeful lich under feared necromancer Burgoyne, to understand why you'd have to know his full career and not just him being known as a traitor.

Not the biggest complaint though as the baseline game is great.

    Great to see this game getting a fair review. Cannot recommend this game enough. Wo Long is the next evolution of the Nioh formula and addresses a lot of your valid criticisms and introduces a deflection mechanic that I found much easier to use than Sekiro's style. Nioh 2 (and 1) is as good as DS clones can get (except for Remnant 1-2 which are better imo, but since those are mostly shooters, I wouldn't draw a direct comparison). In my opinion where everything Soulsborne (except maybe for DS2 and Sekiro, which I didn't play at all) is 10, Nioh 2 is 8.5. Let's face it: much of these games are about combat, and Nioh does that incredibly well, arguably even better than DS (from certain pov).

    I loved both Nioh and Nioh 2 but the weirdest thing to me is how neither game gives you a basic combo in the beginning (eg. light -> light -> heavy), which makes the initial intro level absurdly difficult when you're brand new. Not only does this make it much harder to break monsters, it also straight up removes basic functionality from certain weapons - even if it's briefly. It always struck me as very strange, since it trains you to button-mash instead of purposefully draining the enemy ki bar.

  • @joel5956
    @joel5956 10 місяців тому

    My favorite yokai form has always been the brute too. The burst counter is very easy for me to pick up because it's really just a smack attack and all you have to do is bop the enemy while they glow red (as opposed to waiting to be attacked).
    And the kusarigama is hilarious. I didn't even know about it until I played this game (I think it was in Nioh 1, but I've never played that one). Most of the time, you're trying to pull the enemy (human ones, anyway) towards you with the ball-and-chain and then hit them with combos from the scythe. The concept of actually trying to tie somebody up with that in a live battle is just absurd, so I had to go look up live demonstrations with the real thing. Sure enough, all anybody is trying to do when their opponent is actually fighting back is to bash them with the the weighted ball. There are some pretty ridiculous theoretical demonstrations out there where they do yank away somebody's sword with it, but the guy holding the sword is in on it just as much as the guy with the kusarigama.

    just fyi, for people who are (like me) unintersted in ng+, loot grinding and "engdames", Nioh 2 is also a great experience to just be played through once - while you'll obviously not gonna get everything out of its incredibly complex combat system, it is still fun and rewarding
    Now, I also wanted to comment on difficulty - Mortim mentiones that bosses in the sequel were way too easy and I think I can guess why. This game is just much, much easier with heavy weapons, like axes or odachis. I played Nioh 1 using those and it was a breeze, but I chose an opposite build in Nioh 2, with mainly dual swords and spears and it was significantly more difficult.
    Without an ability to easily break you opponents' ki by just spamming attacks, the game become so much more challenging - tbh spears kinda saved me with their range, I don't think I'd even be able to beat the game with dual swords only. I also went with light armor, which made me super squishy and bad at blocking, which did not help either.

    I disagree that Nioh 2 has a worse story; in fact, I was pleasantly surprised about it. Nioh 1 was about William trying to get back his spirit waifu and all the pseudo-historical Japanese drama was kinda just... there... and if you're like me who knows very little Japanese history, you were as confused as William looked. William was just kinda there, for the story.
    In Nioh 2 though, you play as "Hide", one half of Hideyoshi. It makes sense for you to stay with the one guy who can calm you down from your frenzy, and then as you build relationships and loyalties from following him around, it in turn makes sense that you leave because you don't approve of who he's become. And I personally adore that you can have different outcomes for certain side missions.
    Sorry, I'm just that one weird guy who plays Nioh for the story and am very passionate about it 🤣

Depths are the one thing that was no longer fun. But all 108 floors of the underworld were great. Most people hate the loot system but if you actually understand the loot system it's actually super easy to navigate. First playthrough if it has a high lvl than what youre wearing switch to it. Once you beat first playthrough, go farm a set, go into 3rd playthrough go farm your set and then literally just steam roll the entire game 200 lvls below recommended.
