    Another great video Chris thanks. I am a big advocate of COMC, you did a great job explaining the benefits here. A couple things I’d like to mention to further encourage everyone to give them a shot. First on the shipping/processing delays, I believe they will get back on track after COVID, they are located near Seattle and were amongst the first states to get locked down and they are still recovering, they never missed a deadline for me prior to COVID. Second, they do have a less expensive option to list cards at .35 per card vs the .50, this price is currently suspended as they try to catch up. Finally, just a technicality but the actual fee to sell and cash out equates to 14.5 percent, not 15. The reason is the 5 and 10 percent fees are each taken out separately so the 10 percent only comes out of 95 percent of the sale. Example, a card sells for $100. COMC takes 5 percent leaving 95 dollars deposited into your account. You then request a cash out of that $95 and COMC takes 10 percent of the $95 ($9.50) leaving you a total cash out of $85.50. Not a huge difference but it does add up if you are doing significant volume.

      All excellent points and all 100% correct:
      1. Pre-covid, shipping times were totally reasonable and there is no reason to expect they wont eventually get back to that
      2. The $0.35 vs $0.50 makes a huge difference when dealing with cards worth around $1 - $1.50. The $0.35 option should be back at some point.
      3. You're spot on, its actually a little under 15%.

      Have ordered 8-10 cards from comc and have only received 4, shipping times are real bad with COVID. Wasn’t shopping with them pre covid so I have no idea how it is. I’m sticking to reasonable shipping times and communication until things look better for others. Thanks for the vid!

      Six months later and their shipping is still abysmal. Can’t keep blaming COVID. My EBAY purchase last week wasn’t sent out until a week after my purchase.

      @@collectorinvestordealer The impression I've gotten from some of their recent messages is that the lower-priced option may be gone for good. I hope I'm wrong, because a break-even of roughly $0.80 ($0.50 submission fee, $0.25 fee added on to the sales price, plus a few cents per card to ship them to COMC) and periodic sales where a 20-30% is typical, that eliminates the possibility of both selling and buying many cards on COMC. I'm wondering if they're ceding the low end of the market to places like SportLots...

    I'm just starting to use COMC for lower-value relic and auto cards. Definitely some advantages over eBay. One thing I've noticed on eBay that makes it more competitive for buyers is that many sellers are now offering singles with free shipping in a plain white envelope (PWE) or just charging $0.50 to cover the expense of the stamp. All of the cards I've received in PWEs have arrived in great shape.

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому +1

      Thats true, some ebay sellers are switching over to PWE. This in theory is most dangerous for the seller, as if the buyer claims they didnt receive it, there is nothing the seller can do. But you're right, I havent experience any issues with PWE.

There seems to be massive advantages particularly for international buyers as previously buying low value cards was prohibitive, now I can buy from multiple sellers to either sell without any postage fees or build up one large order to ship, saving huge international shipping fees. I used to be like you too.. I wanted total control over all the stuff I wanted to sell, but the time and headaches are just too difficult to manage alone now. Back when eBay was cheap enough to do it yourself, it was okay. But the specialization of COMC is looking more like a viable option to me. At first I saw their eBay listings to be really expensive and thought it would be really hard to sell cards through them. But I think the key is to use your time to do the research in order to know which cards you can sell and then let them do the footwork for you and take the reduction in profit. It's not a bad option at all.

I was thinking just yesterday ... if you had a clearing house where a company could hold a card ... a company could then use various real time pricing data(not sure if this can happen) and offer OPTIONS on cards ... the key is the clearning house ... and after watching you COMC video ... I mean, the only hurdle would be the various different grades ... a card would have to be put in a grade container ... and that grade would be a "stock" for which options could be sold on the card ... this company offering options on cards might only do GEM MINTS in the beginning ... I can totally see this happening ... cards become like stocks ... and as with stocks, options can be bought and sold ... Hmmmm

      Core Position Trading Similar to that option concept, in theory you could short a card’s value assuming you could locate at the clearing house. Many other issues involved in this as you ostensibly would be selling securities and/or commodities and may need to register with the requisite regulator. I like the way you’re thinking though!

    Hi Chris - thank you for your video! One thing that may be important re the chart you shared comparing the 4 selling/consignment options. You listed the total cost to the buyer of a $5 card on ebay, including shipping and tax, at $8.50. I have been selling on ebay almost 6 months now and agree that's pretty accurate. You also noted the fees to the seller - at 15% - to be about 75 cents. At 15%, the seller would pay ebay $1.18. Ebay now charges their % on the TOTAL VALUE of the sale ... they charge the seller a percentage of the total, including shipping and tax. So you had the ebay profit at $4.25 with the cash-out profit of COMC at I think $3.82. Cash-ou for ebay being dinged for total value would be $3.86. LESS than COMC, with the higher fees to buyers AND the extra work to sellers. 15% is a fair average. I pay 13.25% in TV fees. On $8.50, that would be $1.13, for a net on $5 card of $3.87. As you point out, that's my time doing all the listing / shipping work, buying shipping supplies etc. I was shocked that my fee including shipping and tax? Maybe it did not always. Now it does. In dealing with cards worth under $50, COMC just seems like absolutely the best option for partnering to consign on singles. Especially commons. Thanks again for this video and your channel!

    The one thing that really confused me about COMC when I started out there 6 years ago was the condition names. When you initially ship a vintage card to COMC, it is often listed without a grade, but if you think the card is in great shape, you can submit the card for grading by COMC for a couple of bucks, or to one of the major grading services for a higher price.
    COMC allows some of the larger dealers to self-grade cards though, and their grade names may not exactly match COMC's. I can't remember the exact differences but, say, COMC might grade a card "NM-Mint" and a dealer might self-grade as "Near Mint-Mint". So searching for a card by condition is not quite as easy as it could be due to the mismatched grade names. (I emailed COMC for an explanation, and they responded with that information a few days later.)
    A couple of tips if you send in cards -- particularly vintage ones -- for the first time: If you send a card in a penny sleeve, make sure the sleeve is new and clean: COMC doesn't remove the card from its sleeve, and their photos reveal every flaw...even if it's a flaw in the sleeve itself. Also, if you're thinking about having COMC grade a card, be ruthless and/or realistic when zooming into their scanned images. If you're not used to grading cards yourself, it's easy to overestimate the condition and waste a couple of bucks merely to have COMC judge it as VG-EX, which depending on the card may not cover the additional grading cost.
    On the positive side, COMC did grade several of my 1970's Topps Baseball cards as either "Mint" or "NM-Mint", which has resulted in several selling at a significant premium.

    Good point about shipping and ebay. I live in Canada.and buying cards on Ebay from US sellers can charge insane prices for shipping. Frequently see $12, $15, even over $20 to ship a single card to Canada from the US. This is for a common single card ! Obviously I don't bother buying from these sellers which is a shame because it means I miss out on a large selection of card options. I will check out COMC to buy and sell.

    I could be wrong but my general feeling is that COMC graders give precedence, or take into greater consideration, the centering of a card overall when ‘grading’ rather than corners. I always seem to find a greater variance in grades of comparable vintage cards where centering seems to be the biggest difference.
    This would make sense if I run COMC and the goal is for an increase in purchase decisions being made by buyers. As a buyer on the site, it is far easier to discern the centering when comparing Poor, VG, EX, ‘graded’ cards rather than the quality of corners.
    we are trying our best to get the best corners on cards. Not easy when you’re looking at a scanned digital image of a card through a monitor or a phone screen. It’s tough.

For the most part, the quality of the cards was good and the shipping materials were very good, and all the cards had penny sleeves. The time to prepare a shipment for the cheaper shipping options is extreme though.

    The problem with using COMC is that, if you buy a card to grade then you have to ship it. You aren’t wanting to wait months to build up to 100 cards and save on shipping usually. That all would waste time and then you add the grading time and you are wasting 5-7 months.

    Wonderfully done and thourough thank you ! Have been on Comc for a few weeks now and want to send in a bunch of cards to them and this really helped as their site doesn't really explain the deal.
    What I want to know is say for example I send in 3 Luka Prizm Raw RC's . All the same and in great condition. On there for sale now is EX to NM for $370, Near MT to MT $1152.00 and Gem mint $2450.00 I am NOT a professional grader and if I'm looking at ea card and corners are clean etc, thats a big decision to be wrong on if I went to sell on Ebay and just having to list as Raw where Comc actually qualifies each raw card.
    I don't have a whole lot of VTG so I would hope their grades are accurate for what I would be sending..

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому

      Thats a great and important question, and the truth is Im not really sure. Giving a more detailed condition grade for modern is something they only recently started doing (and only on high dollar key cards I believe), so I don't know how accurate they are with it. You're right, thats an important distinction...

    awesome awesome video....recently opened up my loads of cards that i wasnt seen for 22yrs and ben tryna figure out how to sell a lot of them that either i cant afford the grading process or the wait time. The bonus value for me is the ONLY thing you need to do is "set the price" and the hold everything in their warehouse. Only thing i need to ask is how do they accept payment from me for the card i send in and how would i receive my money back if i wanted to cash out some of it/ thanks for the great video. Appreciate it..

    I am in Canada. I buy cards off EBAY and have them shipped directly to COMC with my username. They get uploaded fast never had an issue. Then I flip them through COMC usually 1-2 years later when the prices go up. Obviously gotta figure out which cards are good value to make it work, but I vouch for COMC.

    Hey Chris, love the channel and don’t miss a video. Thanks for what you do. I have a quick question about COMC. When you submit cards to them do you recommend sending them in top loaders? I have a ton of cards in the $2 to $12 range that I don’t really want to fool with and they are just taking up space. They are already penny sleeved and top loaded so it would be more of a hassle to take them out of the top loaders if it’s not recommended send them top loaded. Thanks in advance for your help.

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому

      I always just submit my cards in penny sleeves. That is what their site recommends, although I dont think there is a problem submitting in top loaders.

    Thank you so much for your videos. After 25 years away from collecting a came back 1 year ago buying baseball cards. Your videos are so informative without talking down to people. I'm more collector than investor/flipper. That said I still have want to save money. Would it be a good idea to use COMC to sell base cards and inserts of star players along with rookie cards of lesser brands, (Gypsy Quenn, Heritage) to get some of the money back that I spend on hobby and retail boxes. Thanks again for the great videos.

      Very cool to hear you've come back to the hobby! In my opinion, yes, COMC is perfect for that. I would just make sure the cards you send in are at least fetching in the $1.50 and up range or so, otherwise its probably not be worth it.

    Amazing video, thank you so much.
    Not sure if maybe I missed this in the video (if I did, then apologies for asking), but when you submit to COMC, do you place each card in both a penny sleeve and top loader?
    Thanks again and keep up the great content!

    • @collectorinvestordealer

      I personally just ship all the cards in penny sleeves, just making sure the cards are packed tight within a standard card box.

    Great explanation and video Chris. I'm still learning on COMC but it takes time like you said. Can you clarify the storage fees, on a next videos ? Thanks

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks!
      The storage fees are 1 cent per card per month, but the first 3 months are free. And it only applies to cards listed at 75 cents or higher (under 75 cents have no storage fee).
      So, if you ship them a card, and it sells one year later, you will pay them 9 cents in storage fees for that card.

    Very well thought out video, thank you. Doesn’t comc charge storage fee’s for your cards?

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому +5

      You're right, they do, although its very minimal. The first 90 days a card is in your possession in their warehouse, it is free. After that, they charge 1 cent per month per card. So if you shipped them a card, and you sold it one year later, they would take 9 cents storage fee for that card.

    One last question on comc in regards to vintage. I noticed some card they give a grade ExMt for example where other just say base or raw. It seems cards in which they gave a grade are listed for a higher price. Is it a different service level in which they assign a condition or is it just random?

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  3 роки тому +1

      The grades they give on vintage is one of the biggest weaknesses of COMC. They clearly dont have knowledgeable people doing the grading, so it appears random at times. If there is no grade, its supposedly EX or better. Most of the time when you see just a single grade (like EXMT), its a specific dealer - Dean's Cards - who I guess has the freedom to grade his own cards, and he charges insanely high prices.

      It depends on the card and how fast it is likely to sell, but as a rough estimate, I would say $2 is a decent cutoff
