Adam Savage's Leather Aragorn Vambraces!

  • Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
  • Adam shares an important component to an Aragorn cosplay he's been slowing assembling--Aragorn's leather vambraces that he wears throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy. These vambraces were made by the artists at Weta Workshop, and Adam shows the layered construction and intricate details that make it a beautiful and comfortable piece of costuming!

It's also the way he steps into his destiny as the son of Gondor. Having lived in the wilds, and among elves, and in hiding, he has found his people and his home in Boromir, his kin. Boromir's failings are Aragorn's fears, but his immediate redemption and bravery is Aragorn's salvation. My brother, my captain, my King. Cry at that part EVERY TIME!!!

The remarkable thing about these movies is how much love was put into them. The LOTR cast has such a bond, the crew, WETA, all of the people involved poured so much of their passion and care into these films.
If you’re reading this and you somehow had anything to do with those films, thank you so much, from one human being to another.

  • @Mengmoshu

I like a few things about how Adam's shop videos have changed when he's filming himself. I think some of them can continue when it's possible to have crew there again.
Using the footage of Adam's mistakes and (non gory) accidents is at the top of the list, and I think that actually started before all this.
I also really like some of the angles he ends up using when he's going to talk a bit more. There's less of the "TV Set" shots where he stands behind a table the camera is aligned to, which makes it feel more intimate and personal.
And finally, Adam seems to allow himself to be more rambly and less sharply on topic.

I like the videos you've been filming yourself better than the ones where you've got someone else working the camera. You understand what you are doing, and you appreciate the process more, so you show more of that. The other people might film more 'cinematic' or more 'professional', and that's fine for TV, but this is youtube. When you film yourself I feel like I'm there in the shop with you, and it's great.

A Weta Workshop story here...just to show what a great group works there...I have been collecting the Weta Worship mini epics from the Lord of the Rings. Well, my Gimli axe head broke off in shipping. Things like this happen, and I wasn't upset at all, but I did want to fix it. I contacted Weta and asked what glue they recommended? They guy actually went back into the shop, asked what glue they would use/recommend, took a photo and emailed it to me along with a kind message. That might seem like a small deal, but it is incredible customer service in our day and age. Thanks Weta... Oh, and Gimli's axe head is all fixed!

We need to see your other Aragorn pieces! I put together an Aragorn costume years ago and there are some bits that are especially difficult to get right, namely the vambraces, the glove on his right hand (back then I could find no good close up shots of it in any detail), and his pre-Lothlorien cloak (which I'm convinced is cut in a peculiar way rather than the traditional circle pattern of a conventional cloak; the back seems to ride high and the two corners extend much further down, which is most visible in the brief scene where he and the hobbits are walking through the rain after leaving Bree). There's also the mysterious satchel that he wears around his torso, which seemed to be his cloak wrapped up in a bundle, but I have no idea how you could take an adult-sized cloak and wrap it into a shape that narrow.

Yes and no.. the lotr movies were iconic, the hobbit lacked in many ways in the way lotr felt, making a series would take a LOT to make it feel that iconic and good and frankly .. i dont think it would come close in any way even if they tried, also, theres just so much in the books translated in the movies that a series wouldnt feel canon anymore, which makes it very hard to produce something, so many people love.

I also believe when costumes and props are well made it allows the performers (actors/actresses) to get "deeper" into the world and helps them perform to the best of their ability. If everything around you feels real and immersive then you will become more immersed into thes story too, maybe even believing it's real ...and that's when the magic of movies happen, when it becomes real.

Went on the Weta tour last year during my vacation to New Zealand. I highly recommend it! The only disappointment was that we weren't allowed to really go into the shop areas, they have a specific area you go through and there's a couple windows you can look through, but that's it. I was also hoping to see the CGI areas, but that's in a different building and I'm sure they didn't want any "leaks" happening with the stuff they are working on. I was surprised to find it located in the middle of a suburb; although a lot of the people that live there also work there, so makes sense. And the bus ride there was great because the driver pointed out various filming locations on the drive over. Crazy to find out how close they were to the city proper on some of the shots.

I was planning on nerding out in the comments about how they are actually Boromir's vambraces, I'm glad Adam did it for me instead.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else immediately get "the room where it happens" from Hamilton stuck in their head at 6:54?

Have you never read the books!!! The vambraces are not from the books, but I love that it was a thing in the movies. I have read all the books several times, and always find something new every time I read them.

Did I miss the Link to the ‘Fairwell to Arms’ movie Adam said would be in the description?

Very cool show and tell. While I am a fantasy and sci-fi geek I've yet to watch Lord of The Rings.
I might make watching all the movies my goal over Fall.

Aragorn keeping the vambraces is just a movie thing.

"...and so open with their knowledge." IMO, that's a very important bit. 'You are not your tools and techniques'; as a crafter, you add value to materials and how you use them, not just by the materials themselves.

@Adam Savage I believe the word you're looking for is 'Masterwork.'

*Ahem... The Steward of Gondor was Boromir's (and Faramir"s) father, Denethor. But I love you, Adam Savage.

making things this beautiful. its such a surreal experience. my guess is since God made the world for us, he wants us to feel that same joy and excitement he felt as he did that. at least thats the only reason i can think of as to why we get so excited about creating these beautiful things.
