In this special One Day Build filmed earlier this year, mathematician Matt Parker visits the cave to build a rhombic dodecahedron with Adam! Be prepared for lots of fun geometry discussion as Adam and Matt try to make abstract math concepts tangible with a physical build. They also take this construction a few steps further by lining the inside of the polyhedron with mirrors and LED strips for an infinty mirrored effect!

it's rrrrrrrreally interesting to see them work out the LED mapping. Not specifically for the outcome, but for the group dynamic and communication. Adam being brutally honest that he has stopped listening (well, his "brain has stopped taking on new information"), Matt trying to think it through on the fly under pressure (Adam started stimming by tapping his foot but caught himself), Adam identifying their difference in approach (satisfyer vs maximizer) and calling out their time shortage, Matt knowing when he has to resort to ripping fresh pieces of tape instead of trying to help with the complicated building, etc. You can see that these folks have worked in groups, know what to do and say to keep things moving without causing grievance, know their own strengths and weaknesses and play to them.
Hear Hear! this is quite possibly my favourite collaboration ever!

I recently got a fidget toy called a Shashibo that demonstrates perfectly that the rhombic dodecahedron is the inversion of a cube. It's a cube made up of twelve half-rhombic pyramids (Rhombic pyramid cut in half lengthwise along the rhombic face) and then attached to each other by stickers (across the faces) and magnets. The result is a cube that can fold into a bunch of shapes, but one of them is the Rhombic dodecahedron. I... might have had a info-dumping session with my spouse when I realized that. She now knows I have a favorite polyhedron. Ya know, nerd stuff.

I genuinely thought that was a well known joke (may still be), and spent a few moments trying to understand the punchline, however, after googling, it doesn't seem to be. I understand it now, and feel like an idiot... perhaps using the word 'wire' rather than 'change' might have saved my stupidity, but that's purely semantics... did make me chuckle when I finally realised :)

Tfw you realize you played with the toys Adam made in a museum as part of a school field trip and you have proudly remembered your stellated rhombicosidodecahedron ever since.
I remember back in elementary school, my class made regular polyhedra Christmas tree ornaments. Little did we know, when we were told to make two of them, one was going to a Christmas tree at the art museum nearby just prior to our field trip to that museum. I was so excited to see my blue cube sitting on the "Gee, I'm a tree" exhibit in the lobby.

I was not expecting to hear them discuss the geopolitical situation of north-eastern Spain before the 3 minute mark. When it comes to dodecahedrons you'll usually need to wait for about 10 minutes. These men know their stuff.

So funny that at 8 minute they talk about 'how a math teacher would use this' - im sitting here (a math teacher) going, how can I have students play with this in my Geometry class...
Thank you for going the extra mile to get your students more interested in math, Teachers are an investment in society and it's a damn shame you folks aren't paid what you're actually worth.
I'm going to go against popular opinion here, but I feel that teachers who do not give students real life examples to relate the information to, are not worth paying as much as teachers who help the students discover the relevancy of the information through experimentation and self discovery. Not all teachers should be paid well. HillMath90, please do as you are thinking. My math teachers (private schools) has masters and doctorate degrees in math. They were not able to help me truly understand the subject. I ended up having the self educate using real world examples on my own time, outside of school, in order to understand math.

Please do that. You're sure to spark someone's passion if you let yours shine through your work. Also, if I recall correctly, Professor Matt Parker has a store with all kinds of interesting things. Mathematical puzzles, games, weirdly shaped(or numbered!)dice and even some excentric paperweights, literally and figuratively. When they turn the light on, it genuinely looks like there‘a a whole other place inside of it! It works so well!!
I run my own wood working business and I have used a dodecahedron shape before to make a hanging light. Each face had scroll sawn Celtic knot elements on them. It was hollow to allow for a light to go inside. You guys have opened my mind to the possibility to utilize other solids (including this one) in the creation of even more varied light boxes. Love my man Mr. Adam Savage, always an inspiration.
They both looked so awkward at the beginning like "oh my god it's really him!" but their personalities collided in the best way, this was an awesome episode from two of my favorite mathematically-inclined UA-camrs :D

I have hated maths for so very long because I found the numbers difficult to imagine, but Matt just gave me the key to better understanding and being able to visualise those numbers in "finding and exploding patterns." Thank you so very much for that. Mind Blown!

Watching these guys geek out about shapes reminds me of how I felt when I solved a shape problem at work. Basically, I needed a shape for which the smallest box that could enclose it didn’t share a face with the mystery shape. When my coworker and I figured that it was a tetrahedron it was so satisfying. We immediately mocked it up by folding post it notes.
I've lost count of words I've never heard prior to this episode.

The best part of this is watching them struggle the same way I do while trying to visualize all this. I love that it's not simply explaining "this is how it works" it shows the struggle to get there too.
I love that solid! Not only is there a cube hidden in it that can be revealed if you draw line on the shorter face diagonals, as they showed in the video, but if you draw lines on the longer face diagonals, you get an octahedron!
PURE JOY!!! Proving once again: "Do we stop playing because we grow old, or do we grow old because we stop playing?"
There's also the crucial time aspect when you're an adult. This video makes money and if it didnt it wouldnt have happened. Unless of course they meet on a weekend. But if you have a family... Worked hard entire week.... Its obviously possible, just difficult in actual real life.

IKR! I sure hope they are now nerd-besties... nerdsties...? Besterds...? Anyway, it’s not hard to spot someone who grew up alone, outcast from the “normal kids”. It’s a vulnerability that never fully heals. What stands out the most is the fact that they are eager to comfort and support others, though. Empathetic souls.
Havent seen this in a while, and now rewatching it, I can appreciate the use of music (tango?) when they are wiring the inside of the mirrored shape. Nice job.
For anyone that enjoyed this I would recommend checking out Matt Parker's video on four-dimensional math from the Royal Institute. Cut shapes in half for almost an hour and blew my mind the whole time.

@@hazerod833 To be a true "geometric solid", all sides must be equilateral. In this case, all but one side. If you cut an equilateral hexagon into 6 pieces, you'll get 6 equilateral triangles, all laying flat. There is no way to make them into a pyramid. Now, take one out and you can make a pyramid with a pentagon base, but you'll never get a pyramid from 6 equilateral triangles.
i'm an electrician who installs LED tape regularly. i was literally screaming at the screen while they were talking about running jumpers! you can feed +&- to the LED tape from any point. including where they intersect

While not screaming, I was groaning inwardly at how simple this way overthought problem would be and amazed why they did not see it. Oh well if math is what mathematicians enjoy doing, electricity is what electchickens enjoy doing; obviously non overlapping fields of study. (yes I can spell electrician, if you don't understand the intentional misspelling your missing out on a great channel)
It depends if it's a 5v strip, which you can cut/splice anywhere or a 12v+ strip where you can only cut/splice every n LEDs.
Ah, to be specific, it only matters if the strip is wired in parallel or in series parallel. These strips are parallel strips and would be fine to wire up from any point where there is a plus or minus.

AIUI the term they're looking for is "cumulated" - stellated is done by extending the faces of the inner shape, cumulated is when you stick pyramids on [they're easily because they often result in the same shape]

The 3 way right triangle mirror effect is cool. It's used in road signs and high visibility stuff so that regardless of what angle headlights hit it, the driver will see it. neat!

I actually spent a lot of my childhood "discovering" shapes and shape combinations and I didn't even realize it... I was OBSESSIVE about finding new topology with my toys.
What were they called... they don't sell them anywhere but japan anymore, but I had these toys called "flexeez" or something, and they had four snap points and they were super bendy. I found that connecting them in an interlocking loop with different amounts made them have to bend and make a ball, or they would be too many and it would get harder to put them together and they got all wobbly... one of the most interesting things to me was that six connection points made it a stable and flat shape. I would later learn that all this was teaching me different topological surfaces, and that they were a PERFECT analogy for non-euclidean space! Because the toys could bend, you could tile shapes that don't tile in normal flat 2d space, and things like tiling pentagons eventually formed a sort of 2d spherical space...
Man, I need to get myself some toys again. I love maths.

The person you replied to didn't mention either dodecahedrons nor icosahedrons anywhere in their comment.
They only mentioned polyhedrons. And, since "poly" means "many" and "hedron" means "(geometric) face", the icosahedron and both the pentagonal and rhombic dodecahedrons are polyhedrons.
I got so excited when I saw “with Matt...” and it was indeed Matt Parker, but then it was even better than I expected. What a perfect collaboration.

Actually, it would be kinda crap, given how much space it takes up with that tiny horizontal face on the top 😜 Maybe if you add a large glass top, but not sure how that affects the visual effect (adding its own refractions)
You embed it 1/2 into the the top of a solid table surface, it would look like a portal or huge area inside

i would put it on a stand where the wire comes in so it stands up like the inside-out cube (also allows a place for wiring with a switch)
I always enjoy your content, but this is one of my favorite episodes ever. The intersection between making and math, the making physical that which is usually abstract, and the brainstorming and troubleshooting (particularly of the lighting) was absolutely fantastic to watch. I can’t wait to show my 8-year old the process you all went through during this. It’s sure to inspire him to want to do something similar.
