Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Chewbacca's Bandolier!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- Time for some Star Wars prop building--Adam Savage makes an upgrade to one of his favorite costumes! Adam's never been satisfied with the original bandolier strap and satchel he made for his Chewbacca cosplay, so today he fabricates new ones from scratch with metal and leather. And of course Adam hides an easter egg into this Wookiee prop!

Not Wokkie treats... A real Wokkie uses them for his Chewin' bakkie.
Adam Savage’s Tested hey Adam if you still have that piece of leather that didn't fit I'll pay for shipping if you'll send it to me and if you give me a shout out that would be awesome keep up the good work you're so creative I remember watching your MythBusters my favorite person they gave me some money ideas and I was so creative I built my first rc car because of you well modified my first rc car because of you
No, I don’t think I will
I know im asking the wrong place but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I love any help you can offer me
@Jamison Khalil instablaster :)
6:06 "...for those of you using a sane measurement system..."
Savage being savage xD
no
yes
Henkecool15 Nah, he's just being reasonable.
machinist tend to use the metric system, but most wood workers from around the world tend to use the imperial system.
Henkecool15 ha I heard that had to go back a bit to make sure. And yeah always raised with metric though where I work in the timber industry we also use imperial as well
I love how he called millimetres "the sane system"
I love your screen name, especially because it made me think about his totoro build.
Tedious Totoro I had to learn cm to inches for my mother when she was buying things, now I can do it without thinking .
He's clearly an intelligent person to make such an astute observation.
I wish the U.S. would just bite the bullet and convert to metric already. I know it'll be a pain to change everything, but it'll be worth it. The imperial system is just so obnoxious and I'm tired of it.
Fahrenheit is still superior to Celsius, though.
Why is Fahrenheit superior? It's not. There's a reason the rest of the world uses Celsius.
Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Rome
Callum B in a day
I'd hate to a see a seven day build. 'Course he'd have to address the lighting issues first...
that's what "One Day Builds" means
and the voice over directions would include "first, we find a she-wolf, I happen to have two of those right here ...."
Callum B nice dude
"In 30 years, when someone takes this apart"
Implying you won't be buried in a Pharaoh-nic pyramid surrounded by your builds.
Korbl K. But he will. Maybe some grave robbers will come tho! XD
I'm sure he'll die while building his own tomb.. The trick is to start from the outside going in.
Pharaoh-nic?? Do you mean an Egyptian tomb?
@@johnnylantern3609 That's how you call ancient Egyptian stuff that is opulent. Though I don't think it has an hyphen, maybe it was added by youtube.
And movies will make props about Adam's buried props.
A great star trek build!
MatthewLyod your words cause me physical pain.
...are the words that will appear on your grave.
Dude is a troll.. everyone knows this is from Stargate
Star Trek would never have used wooden blocks.
They would have found something cheaper.
Good one Landrew, made me laugh!
i just watched a 35-minute video of Adam Savage making a purse... and I haven't even watched Star Wars.
Pedro Bergamaschi shame on you
Pedro Bergamaschi welcome to our planet then, it's nice to be one of the first people to make contact with your species, there are a few key things you'll need to do to understand us earthlings. The first thing you'll need to do will be to watch Star Wars, 456, then 123 if you really want to watch them, they are worse and not really as important, then 7, then Rogue one. A better system might be to not watch 123, start with rogue one, then 4567.
Don't feel bad, I watched the original 3 when I was a kid, but didn't watch the episode 7 one until 2 days ago. Still haven't seen the rogue movie.
Watching 123 is definitely important, yes there are issues but they are canon, they show quite a bit of information that you otherwise wouldn't know...and there are some awesome fight scenes/characters as well. Darth Maul being a simple example.
go watch star wars then. skip 123. and watch the rest
Its not a purse! It's a Wooksak.
The_Stache and it's European!
I was gonna say satchel, but a wooksak is a wooksak.
A Wurse?

"For those of you using a sane measurement system"- Adam Savage, 2017
Adam Leverson you're damn right, god damn imperial with its 37/64ths what the hell is 37/64ths?!
ninjanathaniel Imperial is much easier for doing math with, such as dividing 1/8" by 2, but whats 7.67mm/2 off the top of your head?
Justin S.
7 / 2 + (67 / 100) / 2
3 + 100 / 200 + 67 / 200
3 + 167/200
Its not really comparable though because it is such a large and unwieldy fraction. If it was 7.67 inches it would be just as hard to do.
Darqk I think you misunderstood. He's saying Imperial is quicker for mental maths. For example, let's say you've a bolt that is 3/8ths. You need to know exactly what half of that is, simply double the denominator for 3/16ths. Imperial is easy to do in your head. In metric, 3/16ths is equal to about 4.762mm. Most regular joes can't divide that off the top of their head - I know I can't without a few seconds to think or maybe write it down. Both measurement systems have their benefits.
Justin S, You really can't generalize like that. Say you have a 40mm screw. Dividing that by two is easy, but 1.57480315 inches divided by two is harder and not possible to write as a usable fraction. It is ridiculous to assume everything will be clean fractions, the world seldom acts like that.
Wookie Cookies, they're not crunchy, they're chewy
ayyyyy i see what you did there
D4N0GG1N awesome!!!! Lol 😈
It's just a shame that it's spelled Wookiee, not Wookie.
@@edibleapeman2 Or is it mate? I have actually notice over the years that it kinda depends on how old you are and indeed where you first saw the word as to how you spell it, kinda like colour and color.
"There's no US mail in starwars!" Just put Wookiee treats on a bandolier. I love Adam.
The thickness of the leather caused the difference in measurements ... I make this mistake almost every time I do leather work... you'd think I'd remember by now, but nope.. almost every time.
Noob
Either that or the water he soaked it in was hot, & the leather shrunk
Coming from Bob Ross. Lol I'm amazed. Funny thing is that I have been working with Leather for over 20 years making professional products. Think twice before you start throwing slang around there bud.
i like how the original prop was probably randomly put together by some dude, and to this day fans are still trying to make a perfect replica
Micoco45 That's exactly what I think too! I like to imagine in the off chance I get to work production in a film that would eventually become an international treasure for generations to come, I'd be like:
"Okay this piece can go here, this one here, I have no idea what this is but it looks good over on this side so you go here...I'll let the geeks make up the lore for this thing."
The best part is that this is probably the case for most props in most movies. Just some guy making some shit that he thinks will look good, and if the movie gets popular enough people will spend way more time trying to replicate it than he did making the original.
I'll put money the small boxes were 1" slices of a planed 2x4 :)
(2x4s are actually 1 3/4 x 3 3/4, but if you plane them down to take off the rounded edges you get about 1 3/8)
In the end many great things are just off the cuff.
and in the 70s? :)
i love adam savage because unlike most presenters you can tell his excitement is genuine, no fake enthusiasm and that makes every one of his shows just so much better.
Zewiq I agree
Zewiq Has no one else noticed or mentioned that he looks and sounds like a retired Walter White?
it's all in the nipples
I love him because he can pull of a fedora so well that he can be indoors and making wookie accessories and you don't even notice he's wearing one.
Oh shit. Didnt even notice
It'd be pretty cool if you guys would add a real time timer in the corner of the screen
luke brown Maybe they could use an actual physical clock in the background.

Adam you should make Chewbaca's bow rifle now that you have the badass bandolier. Would love to see that!
AJXtreme7 Bowcaster xD
Bow rifle? Bowcaster you mean
AJXtreme7 bowcaster! Dang I wasn't the first to correct you, well that speaks well to the future of our society
AJXtreme7 when i saw "Chewbacca's..." i was praying it would be the bowcaster. this was still cool to watch but i NEED to see Adam make a bowcaster
Zen ?
Wookies use 1.8mm aluminum because they don't like Imperial.
especially when its march
Haha!
6:07 Adam is so right the Imperial system is insane
fun fact, the modern day definition of the inch is defined by metric measurements
But US will never go to metric....
commie conformists
Timothy McDougald they should
Fantazzim its not that hard if its all you know, but for people who use metric its absolutely ridiculous
Awesome vid , inspires me.. to try and make a Chewey guitar strap lol . A lot of good techniques here.
Ziggyflop or a backpack with Chewie straps XD
Ooooooh boy. Now I know what my first leathercraft project will be! The store-bought straps don't even remotely look like the original prop.
One of my fav things is watching him recover from a mistake. Not the mistake itself, but the fact he is as human as the rest of us, and goes right back at it. Inspirational.
Whats inside the Wookie Treats ? Chewie Gum.
Time to make a rubber "e" stamp build video!

Dear Adam,
My name is Christian and I live in Indiana. I am 11 years old. I like to build and invent things. You are an awesome role model and I really look up to you. I have been watching Mythbusters since 2009 when I was only 4. I would like to meet up with you one day and get to meet you. You are such a great influence!
Sincerely, Christian G.
InventorKid 101 Hey never give out personal info online
InventorKid 101 Tmi, and I doubt you can be his biggest fan, considering he has a pretty big workshop (ceiling fans, air conditioners, that sort of thing). His biggest fan would probably be some 6 ft, 250 lb guy. (Aren't words with double meanings just great?)
Matthew K. lol😂
btw it's not like someone can find me with only my name and state.
You should still make it a habit to reveal as little information about yourself online as possible. There's a lot of trolls out there and they won't shy back from trying to get some keks out of messing with you.
The original strap probably would've also worked if you took time stretching it out and formed it into shape while damp, then drying it to keep the shape. Wet molding is done a lot for knife sheaths which also tend to use 8+ oz leather.
SATCHEL! it's not a purse.
Indeed. Don't call a wookie's ammo bag a purse. Not if you like having arms, that is.
TeensierPython - a possibles bag actually
At the very least, he could call it a "Murse".
TeensierPython - haversack
it's not a purse, its EUROPEAN!
I love Adam so much. You can tell that if he didn't have this UA-cam channel, he would still probably make most of the stuff that he makes.
I love Adam's eye for detail. He really has an in-depth study and research before any build.
Is it bad that in 20 years of living in this earth. I never realized Chewie had a purse.
Tony Guedea Adam said purse
ImpalerGaming it's european!
ImpalerGaming me neither!
I'm sorry sir, it's called a *European Shoulder Bag*

Some quotes are lost on people ; ) )
US mail leather bags go for hundreds online.
And if they didn't before, they do now.
TheDutyPaid Supercars go for thousands, but that doesn't stop people from modifying them.
Matthew K. Not the point I was making, Adam said "you can pick them up for a few bucks on ebay, $30 sometimes"
I could only find them starting at $800 for a real beat up one.
TheDutyPaid I just found three U.S. Leather mail bags under
$300. I'm not saying you're wrong, but you're blowing this out of proportion.
Matthew K. Still more then the materials cost to make one. Which he ended up doing.
did he ever rivet on the small blocks?
JMakes I was wondering the same thing...
he spent ages re-making the leather strap thing so that he could rivet it, and then he never did :(
JMakes you can't rivet foam, it's not strong enough to take the force of the rivits expanding. Hot glue is ok.
They weren't foam.
Danlo Troth They were made of wood
"For those of you using a sane measurement system..."
If no one has said it you without a doubt have thee best show on any platform. It needs to be said Adam...It needs to be said.
Homie is working in the shop in a pair of $3k shoes.
BALLER!
Tim Calvin what kind of shoes is he wearing?
Tim Calvin they weren't 3k when they came out and he wouldn't be owning them right if he didn't use them. ;) Mars Yard shoes. Also, they're the 2nd edition of which much fewer exist than 1st edition so they're probably even more expensive
I think he got them from Tom Sachs. The whole team that was working on his most recent exhibit had them on.
Next Adam should make a Game of Thrones style cloak.
DUDE he should totally build the iron throne!!
Adam deserves a tv show! ... oh wait
Frostycc We don't mention that anymore, too many bad memories, I miss mythbusters
I myth busters! ;)
I love how nice and sharing this dude is. like everyone take a leaf out of his book
I would love for him to fully replicate his studio with all of his tools in miniature.
mind blown
Who else wishes Adam was their Valentine??
Angus Barter honestly anyone who says no is probably lying
Angus Barter 🙋🙋🙋🙋
wookiees hand stitch leather, adam.
I'm very surprised he used a machine for the bag. I guess he isn't good at hand stitching.
Ever tried hand-stitching leather? It's a fucking hassle.
surprised? it would take hours to hand stitch that. what a waste of time.
adam has also said himself that he isn't very good at hand stitching. in multiple one-day build videos before this, too.
You guys should come out with a one day build that is not edited, so like a 7-hour video of Adam making something. That would be super cool. Or you could do one that is like 30 mins and one that is 7 hours of the same build so we can see how long every thing takes
or he can just live stream a one day build that would be easier
in a live-stream they can't cut out the swearing
hahaha yeah that's a good idea, but what if some people cant make it to the vid? Maybe they could do a livestream and then upload it, only downside though, most of the time live streams have really crappy vid quality. That is why I suggest it.
Watching Adam work is genuinely relaxing.
It makes one appreciate the ART of craftsmanship!
I see a lot of arguments over the measurement comment. So let's brake it down.
What feels more sane?
IMPERIAL: 1 foot = 12 inches, 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 mile = 1760 yards.
METRIC: 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters, 1 decimeter = 10 centimeters, 1 meter = 10 decimeter, 1 kilometer = 1000 meters.
You choose.
And yes I know about "chains" and "furlongs" but I've literally never heard someone use it, so I skipped them.
gruilekzo well it's quite obvious what the answer is, we have ten fingers so a base ten system would make the most sense. It's what we were raised to, and simply because it is a simpler system doesn't mean it switching to it would be simple. It's like English, it would make sense if every switched to it considering how it's a trade and business language on the international market, but you would run into issues trying to convince the citizens of smaller, less globally involved countries to switch to it.
Casey Clymore Yes, that would be a good argument if wasn't for the fact that only 3 countries in the entire world still use Imperial units. Those countries are Liberia, Myanmar and USA. So in this case these three would be the "less globally involved countries" as you put it.
The thermal exhaust ports on the Death Star were too wide because of Imperial conversion errors.
@gruilekzo He was talking about everyone switching to English at that point.
Myth busters may be over but there's still this
Omfg how many times do I have to put this they started it back up with different people

"For those of you using a sane measurement system." XD
I know that it is KILLING Adam that Peter Hayhew pointed out that he misspelled "Wookiee" on the treat boxes. I picture him running out of his house, jumping into his car, racing to the workshop, and fixing it as fast as possible.
Adam, I know you have been told this a million times, but your shop is awesome and your shop skill on different tools is just freakin amazing. You are definitely a Renaissance Man. Thanks for sharing your world. Question: Why no Brain candy in GA??
This is like watch This Old House (I mean this in the highest regards). Amazing to watch someone with all the tools make something so nice and efficiently.
wasn't Kirk wearing that when he killed Spock in the phantom menace?

Why seal the boxes when it could actually be used for storage, lol.
Because the design of the bandolier is actually crap. It wouldn't hold jack in real life. The boxes would just fall out all the time. Real weapon bandoliers are designed to hold rifle rounds, pistol rounds or shotgun shells, all of which have a tubular shape with a point (or blunt) on one end and a LIP on the other end. The round or shell goes into the bandolier "business end" down, using both a tight friction fit and the lip of the casing to prevent the round or shell from falling out.
In order to hold a box or square shaped item on a leather bandolier you would actually need something with a "bag with flap" design along these lines: img0.etsystatic.com/013/0/6786260/il_570xN.426145624_bar4.jpg However the Star Wars prop designers didn't do that, probably because it would be much more difficult to do than the simple "straps and snaps" setup they ended up with. Also, I suspect that the more "sci-fi" look of the "metal" boxes affected the decision as well.
He could have just riveted in the lids, though, between the lid and the top strap nothing would move until you unsnapped the strap...
or done that first, then rivet the box to the lid, so you get the proper look to them too, and it holds all together.
'The boxes would just fall out all the time.' - Why would they? They're actually fixed by the tension of the matched outer stripe. 'Real' wookie bandolier doesn't have snaps. So the boxes can only slide, and only with some effort.
i.imgur.com/I4kguMK.jpg
They could hold Nerf darts or something.
If I was investing this much time into a project like this, I'd have sanded the edges of the aluminum... a gash from that could be nasty. Also, I wish the rivets holding the metal boxes together were on the adjacent sides because then they'd be covered up by the top strap. Actually, since this is a essentially a professional prop intended to be used in cosplay, I think the boxes could have been used for storage. The lids seems tight enough just with the friction fit, plus the top strap would help hold them closed too. I've never been to a big convention, so the following might be bad ideas, but some suggestions for what they could hold are: driver's license / paper money / credit cards / hotel keycard / keys (in the most secure, possibly locked box), ibuprofen, mini permanent markers, battery banks (bonus points for integrating a hidden USB charging port into the outside), action camera, arduino with Wookie sounds / translation / audio effects, Nerf ammo ?, salt and pepper / spork / compass / firesteel and tinder (Wookies must be survivalists at heart, right?), emergency costume repair kit (needles, thread, snaps, etc.), or just... actual snacks. Oh hey, toothpicks. You never have one when you really need one, right? USB drives and SD cards might be nice to have too. OK, I'll stop. I still miss Will.
when Adam is cutting the D-rings out of the old bag, that's a very impressive focus pulling. 14:24
You should give the treats away at cons when you are in costume
Adam preparing for future jokes. What a goof
Adam im really sick right now, and im in bed hating everything. Ever since i was little i have watched mythbusters and i didnt care if i was called a nerd for it you and the gang brought me so much joy and i thank you and this video is bringing back so many good memories and I thank you for continuing to make videos. You're making this bad sick day into a good one for me😊
Late Christmas eve several years ago I put together a children's hobby horse for my nephew. We taped an envelope inside it with the date and a Trojan product. We named the horse Troy. It is my dear and fond hope that in 30 years someone finds this little time capsule when refurbishing this item and is half as amused as we were when assembling it.
Adam Savage is the Bob Ross of our time!
Ive never been this early, I love your builds they help other makers and cosplayers even if they aren't making the same thing, you give very good tips and examples of ways you can go at a project if that made any sense c:
I want to see a how to build a R2D2

That would be Adam's 5 year build. :)
feat. Grant Imahara
"Or for those of us who use a sane measurement system, 2mm" dead. But he's correct. USA standard is idiotic. I wish we would use metric
Of course we _can_ use it. I use it routinely for chemistry. The snag is that it's not widely used by most Americans. Talk to Americans in metric terms, and most of them will get confused.
If a Brit came to America, and an American asked the Brit how far a drive is from city X to city Y, and the Brit told them the distance in kilometers, they'd get a pretty bemused look. If my wife asks me to get a half gallon of milk, I don't ask her to instead say 1.893 liters. She'd probably slap me if I did.
Is the imperial system inane? Yes. Is the metric system better? Yes. But imperial is what we are taught to use, it's what we are told to use, and so most people use it, and because most Americans use it, the rest of us do as well so we can relate information to each other more efficiently.
I know the rest of the world resents us for using imperial, but hey, a lot of us do too.
If a Brit came to America you would pretty much be talking the same language as they use Miles, Gallons, Inches, Feet & Yards for measurement. Now if it was just about the rest of the world (I'm from Australia), it would be the metric system. It would be soooo easy for the US to change to metric, I mean you already use it with your dollars & cents!! We in Aus changed our money from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars & cents in 1966 and then measurements in 1974... There was a little confusion at first especially with the elderly but now of course no problems.
It really is an idiotic system with no rhyme or reason to it. With that said, I cannot for the life of me get my brain to convert over to visualizing lengths in metric. I really want to but I think after decades of being taught to use imperial, it’s just too hardwired in as default. Either that or I’m just too stupid to change
How so?
4:55 Totally impressed with his two-handed technique, then realized it was a mirror.

But but but...shouldn't it be "wookiee treats" and not "wookie treats"?

Please do a "Indiana Jones Satchel" one day build.
Adam! What you should've done is instead of using pop-rivets to seal the aluminum 'wookie treats' boxes, you should've used small screws, and fit a screwdriver into one of the smaller boxes, so you could make them into use-able storage boxes, for snacks and such.
Lookin fresh my guy, rockin that fedora like a boss
who else uses a sane measurement system?
TheBluedragon1221 Well everyone except the US, Liberia and Myanmar.
And you care why?
It's not a purse. Its a satchel
👍👍
why would you say that to a wookiee, unless you want your arms ripped out of the sockets
OMG. You spelled "wookiee" wrong. Rookie move!

Also, I usually hit up the Tandy in, I think Daly City?
Wonderful selection
I could literally watch Adam pour a bowl of cereal and I'd be ridiculously impressed
I knew the second you used thicker leather and your old measurements there would be issues. was surprised you never used your aluminium tape trick on the small boxes.
I would kill for that Bandolier snd Satchel.
A. cause it looks just like Chewbaccas
B. because it was made by Adam Savage
C. Wookie Treats!
ILY ADAM! I wish you and everyone who watches this to have an amazing day :)
I just found these videos and I'm hooked and don't know why
Adam's face at 32:18 is very genuine. I'm very sorry but I did laugh. *hugs*

Excellent Job Adam...
Cant believe this was 5 years ago, wheres the time gone
The purse should be called Chewbagca
You called it a purse
Adam Savage's arms at risk from being torn from their sockets. Story at 11.
It is not a purse, it is a satchel. I believe Indiana Solo would agree.
Totally saw that coming, as a result of using the thicker leather for the retaining strap.
Hey Adam! You can buy a magnetic compass with a floating dial on it to get perfect angles on your break.
That table saw is so nice, I'm in love lol
love it
Is that a Totaro costume hes planning back there?
He's already finished and posted a Totoro costume build.
He has one. This might be an old video.
no its just the old plans still on his white board
Great build, i would have used thinner leather at least on the top strap.
I'm a huge fan of tested and i'd like to see you do a build of doc's rifle from back to the future part III but this is just a suggestion.
I love the imperial system for measuring distance. Miles are less arbitrary than meters. The inch, as it turns out, is a good unit of measurement when dealing with things at our scale. For example, machinists work in thousands of an inch. Yep, decimal inches. Many tolerances, thermal expansions, etc are expressed very cleanly in inches. Reality likes inches.
