It’s a rare important historic cultural technology and music piece that will only appreciate in value. He probably has or bought the real thing anyway
@@BavarianM You can be rich and frugal at the same time.
I love the enthusiasm and energy that Adam brings to every build. That excitement is so inspiring! Truly one of my hero’s!
99% of cosplayers: I'll look on ebay for a similar Walkman.
Adam Savage: I can make that!
Sony TPS-2 ... Not similar, the exact model.... Also, is anyone going to address that the color is wrong ? Way too deep blue :-)
Covered early in the video due to "Starlord" these Walkman' have a ludicrous price point... $500-$700 for a refurbished and over $350 for "Parts Only"
I bet someone on movie staff have predicted that, bought whole bunch of them and now is selling those on inflanted pricess.
cost of materials, not to mention specialized tools, well in excess of $400 but hey if you love model making
Nothing at all in this build was "Specialized" Adam used a mill because he had one, there is not anywhere near $400 in materials in this build AT ALL, Nothing required specialized material at all, nothing required specialized tools, Tandy Leather Factory offers belt clips that you can just buy...
Adam, make something using only products from a dollar store
and he has to steal all of the materials
dollar stores are garbage value. sure, you get cheap stuff, but compared to buying bulk value it's garbage. it's expensive to be poor
then he uses thousands of dollars of tools on them

Adam always puts so much love into what he does build, collect or cosplay.
I watched the Comic Con video first and thought "wow he found the actual Walkman!". That's so good!
"A repeatable, screwable moment"
What a lovely description of most of my life.
Never heard one bad word about Adam Savage. Awesome guy. Talent and class.
Thank you for star Lord stuff Adam. It really helps a lot.
30:00 Adam confirmed savage, who the hell does that to a Peli?!
Adam does...period.
Evil people 😂
Someone that really, *really* needs an orange button. Duh.
I just want to say that I find it somewhat comforting in knowing that Adam has the same reaction I do when I cut my hand. I have passed out several times after cutting my hand or even after seeing a gory screen in a movie. The first time it hit me was while watching 127 hours. It's honestly one of the worst feelings I have ever had. And while it does not happen every time I get a cut I always get anxious that I might start to feel terrible and then pass out.
You forgot the little spindles that sit inside the reels of the cassette that you would see in a real walkman. Fun build though! love these things!
Exactly. Bothered me too. Love 1 day builds nonetheless.
That was something I noticed he skipped too.
Yeah noticed that.
Could've easily gotten some off some cheap junked walkman, glued to another small board.
Came looking for this comment
To be fair, it is just a prop for a cosplay he will probably only wear the one time. Besides, if you ran into him at a con and glanced at the Walkman, would you really stand there and nitpick the Walkman or would you look at the whole cosplay?
I've been using a tamiya scribing tool for cutting styrene. It's safer, cuts deeper, cuts straighter, and leaves a nicer edge.
I’ll have to look into that. Also cool last name haha
@@crimsonvampyre602 thanks, my parents gave it to me haha
I watched this sitting beside my prusa mini thinking, literally everything other maker on UA-cam would probably make it on a printer or using foam, but here’s Adam savage milling a Walkman into existence
Adam needs to go check out the puppets for the new Dark Crystal show on Netflix by Jim Hensons company. They are amazing and I need more info on them.

I would have definitely bought a cheepo mp3 player and mounted it inside so it really works too.
Its not worth it because he just wants to talk to everybody.
A bt transmitter would be even better.
Wear some air pods inside the headphones
maybe a future addition, there is easily enough space left inside.
Adam, thanks for that absolute reality of your channel. Very refreshing!
Always remember to squeeze bleed puncture wounds. Don't want any nasty contaminates hiding deep in the puncture where the disinfectant can't reach!
That depends on how brave you are with the disinfectant :p

Getting Rick rolled is a reward
This, with just ambient sound, could be asmr paradise
But....you can’t listen to Fleetwood Mac on Styrene
There was a moment part way through when I thought "I bet he could have also modded a different cassette player to look like this one."
The buttons probably wouldn't have been in the right place though.
I bet you could make it work with a tiny mp3 player like a Sansa. Tiny hidden USB charger/updater for it
Cutting up a $500 pelican case for a walkman that originally cost 29 bucks
Its the original Sony Walkman. It was very very expensive when it first released
And now it’s $400...what’s the point of this comment
@@mikeledger2614 that the Walkman did not originally cost $29? It was over $500 when it was released if you adjust for inflation
He just took a chunk out of the handle. Case is still sound.
Adam probably got that pelican case from Craigslist for way less then $500. Its probably old too
he's so wholesome; i love his enthusiasm for everything
Surprised he didn't gut a modern production cassette player and put it inside so its usable for effect
Not all cassette players have the same mechanic functions. For example the Tps-l2 (walkman used in the movie) has a different tape pulling direction compared to the later made wm-4
Orange button time: you WHAT?!?! Wow, dedication XD
OMG Adam you are so brave, any mere mortal would have fainted at the.... Well you continuing to build just shows how tough you are sir. We salute you!
With the blue and silver finish I keep thinking of G1 Soundwave!
I was actually just wondering if anybody has simply substituted a Soundwave for a Walkman (or making a prop of one) for a Starlord costume. :)
I love that he 100% could have gotten a walkman through Ebay but he chose to build one himself :) Go Adam!
rockstarTraveler he knows he will make more than $400 from UA-cam on this video. It’s a win-win-win-win situation to make this fantastic custom prop. No brainer. He probably took the profit and bought the Walkman anyways, because who wouldn’t want the original Sony Walkman. It’s a rare important historic cultural technology and music piece that will only appreciate in value. He made something from scratch that created both joy, video content, a cool prop, and profit which invested in a collectable becomes a longterm growth financial asset.
except then he would have missed the pure joy of making stuff ... you can't buy that.
It's never about the destination.
It's the journey that counts.
holy crap!
I watching you scribe panel lines in almost silence at three in the morning, and then the music starts and scares a few years off of my life.
Adam, I have the exact reaction as you do to cutting my hands, and it is absolutely terrifying because I basically go into shock for a bit, and can barely think while blood drains from my face and I get cold sweats, and have to sit down before I pass out.
Thanks for making me see it's not just me 😅
David, I know this isn't the time or place, but I just want to say that your models on MMF are brilliant.

Average person: saves up for months to buy a Pelican case.
Adam Savage: slices up a Pelican case to make an orange button.
Why save for months? They aren't that expensive.
Yeah, found one that looks like the one in the video for like $60.. Not that much compared to average shop equipment prices. Especially one as big and as stuffed as Adam's.
Still I'd prolly just paint it proper color instead, but it's not like a holy grail of cases was destroyed for it?

I have never had a scare because the adhesive is so exact it does a great job of keeping the skin in place. thanks for the video, stay safe
In the world of 3D printers everyone worries about the hot end, and I have burned myself a few times, but that damn scraper is killer. I love my BuildTak scraper, so much safer
I just love how Adam is such a nerd. It makes me so happy. "ORANGE BUTTON"
Its great to see him build this really by hand (or manually guided machines). Others show some CADing and how a 3D-Printer does the work.
Yeah. When he was milling the pieces, I was thinking "I have a CNC engraver/router that would do a good job of that."
So satisfying when he had the one panel tuck into the other so cleanly.
