I find it helps if you experiment with different garden hoses, I find ones with a lighter nozzle made from carbon fibre does the trick for me, gold plating sometimes helps also
People who are really great at doing certain things are not always good at explaining to others how they do them. They may not really know themselves. Ted Williams said he became a great baseball slugger simply by keeping his eye on the ball. But scientists studying major league pitchers say that their fast ball is moving way too fast for the human eye to be able to see it, much less follow it. A lot of seemingly superhuman abilities take place in the subconscious mind after many, many hours of practice. Anyway, thanks Doc. Love your music.
I totally agree with this. I do think this is a decent nugget of an explanation though. Doc is a thorough student of the instrument and there is very little he doesn't know about what he's doing. He still practices 5-6 hours a day and is always looking for things to help give him an edge, whether it's a different approach or new equipment. When we asked him about embouchure, for example, he said it's something he knows everything about and nothing about. I honestly think the thing to gain from Doc is that you need to dedicate each and every day to the trumpet in order to achieve real progress. If you do this, you'll eventually figure some things out.
@@BrassChats well said! I still can't figure my tongue out ...but many says it's important for high notes. I can get to a high D without tongue arching 🤷🏾♂️
@@da11king Google the pencil exercise and Cat Anderson's whisper g. Also, if you are having trouble with range you are most likely over blowing, google that too. Good luck!
Thanks Champ, I have been called by great authorities ,the world greatest drummer. These accolades do not come easy right? Kent Vogel A.S.C.A.P WBD 50+ hits soon given to our world. Love you Grand Champion. And Harry and Bix.Beiderbeck. Buddy offered me the band boy job. Passed on that .
This is a question we get all the time. It's actually easier to use your big toe. Just jam it in there as hard as you can. Your range will improve almost immediately.
His description of the hose is a good one, BUT the distance of the water stream is also dependent on maintaning the supply of the water too. Just squeezing ones lips harder by itself doesnt make those higher notes happen unless there is some good compressed air behind it.
I don't play an instrument but I saw Doc Severinsen om my video feed. You look like a great UA-cam. My nephew plays the trumpet, I'll suggest he check it out.
As a trumpet player i get the concept. he is trying to say you have to tighten up your amberture or the lip muscles when you put your lips up to the trumpet.. you have to make a really small space for air to pass between your lips in order to make a sound on the trumpet.
It might make perfect sense, especially if you already grasp the concept. Did you watch it first time knowing nothing about what he is saying? The thing about trumpet (and other) pedagogy is that analogies only work for some people, and may not help some at all. It may be all true, but some people need to hear these things in direct terms to which they can relate and respond.
Oh please, dear wise master Show me how to reach the path of least resistance Where the sound is beautiful Where I can experience ecstasy Where I feel I have arrived...
Yeah that about sums up the ability of a virtuoso to teach others how he does it. Might as well be honest, very likely that you really can’t do what I do no matter how hard you try
Hey Ed, What he said was IT! If you knew half as much as him you wouldn't be writing the comment. You would be someone like him on the other side. I'm not bashing you cus I'm on the side with you. He knows the secret and natural talent has a lot to do with it as well.
You guys are all looking at it wrong - the thumb goes over the BELL of the horn. You're all trying to figure out how to stick yer big toe or yer thumb in there with the mouthpiece, 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Doc Severinsen hasn't gone senile, despite the fact that he is 91 years old. Amazing that he is still alive, and still playing trumpet. His speaking is somewhat impaired due the fact that he had a couple of mild strokes. This fact makes his abilities seem even more fantastic at age 91. Doc is in better shape than most 60 year-olds. If you make it to age 60, you will realize what I'm talking about. We should all be so lucky to get to age 91 and still be upright, walking and talking. Most 90-year olds are lying in a bed barely alive, waiting to die. Doc Severinsen is still playing concerts, and sounding great and thrilling audiences. Amazing !!
Have been watering plants for three months now. Send help. Cannot play high notes.
+survivalist1758 You're not using a green hose are you? Has to be red. In fact, I think Doc mentioned that off camera right after we finished.
It's winter
I find it helps if you experiment with different garden hoses, I find ones with a lighter nozzle made from carbon fibre does the trick for me, gold plating sometimes helps also
i helps if you are watering the plants from about 5-10 ft away, so make sure you are doing that
survivalist1758 this is one of the best youtube comments I've ever read

One of the best!
How do I get my thump inside my mouth while holding the mouthpiece to my lips?

@@BrassChats 😂😂
Imagine your lower lip was the thumb and air blowing out of mouth is the water.

+Ed Weibe Good point. I'm pretty sure Doc would agree with you on this.
I hooked up my garden hose to my trumpet but no high notes came out just lots of water. Luckily I had seated the audience more than 30 yards away.
I have 3 Doc horns...and counting!lol He's awesome.

Even Maynard did not know how he was able to play in the extreme register.
His mom was a gardener - it was hereditary.
I seem to recall something about different mouthpieces being better or worse for high range. Kind of like choosing different diameter garden hoses.
UPSOUND very good
My garden hose is black, so its naturally a bit bigger than all the others.
Oh no....
Huh? I don't get it?

" Some day Alice , I'll hit that high note ! "
Thanks
I'd like to hear him answer a lot more questions.
True that!
Brilliant analogy. Love Doc!
Doc, one of the VERY best at playing high notes, he's probably teaching gabriel how to play
Doc is still alive.
Unless this Gabriel you spoke of is a living trumpet player, WTF are you talking about? My how well informed..
This video makes perfect sense how are some of you not understanding?

Yep. That's it in a nutshell. Thanks Doc!!
I thought Doc played trumpet. I didn't know that he played the garden hose??? Perhaps in his early recordings.

Wow, what a revelation. You can play high notes with a GARDEN HOSE! I think James Morrison tried that with his FRENCH HOSE.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
in other words use faster air for the upper register
Faster air, tight corners, and a small opening.
The conductor fired me for getting him wet
Und wie bekomme ich soviel Wasser in meinen Mund ?Take a chair and a flower jacket.Stand on the chair imagine you are Doc.And Blow.

So I need to combine sticking my thumb in the mouthpiece while blowing air with embouchure.......ok, got it. 👍 👌🤣
lol
Wax on wax off...
Ok.. that didn't make a LICK of sense.. has Doc gone senile?? I'm thinking so
you really don't get the metaphore?

Mike Morales no. Lifting the back of the tongue
Its the air pressure
It’s all about generating more air through the horn. Air pressure. That was MF’s way.
