  • According to Hamza, managing millennials and knowledge workers the way we used to manage traditional factory workers can be disastrous. Speaking through his own experience of being managed and alternatively as a manager, Hamza makes the case that millennials must be lead, instead of managed and given autonomy to complete their tasks, so that they may grow and reach their full potential.
    If you ask Hamza Khan about his role as a manager, he’ll tell you his approach to managing is to avoid it altogether. Before his success as an award-winning digital marketer and entrepreneur, Hamza was a student struggling to find a practical outlet for his creativity while pursuing a degree in business and political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough. In his third-year of university, Hamza switched his major and received a Bachelor of Arts to facilitate a future career in creative multimedia and storytelling. Since graduating, he has worked as a graphic designer and marketer, and teaches social media strategy at Seneca College. He is also credited with making Ryerson University Canada’s leading university in online student engagement.

    Being a manager very often has nothing to do with being a leader. In my experience, to be a good leader high level of emotional intelligence is necessary. Being self-aware, being able to manage your emotions and emotions of others, motivation, empathy and social skills are the key here.

      Ya man. Work can be pretty rough but finding the best way to be optimistic and boost morale. Setting a good example for others and making some time to help those who are struggling is part of what makes a good leader. Managing is just a person who’s paid to be in charge of s group of people.

      To be fair, not all managerial positions involve people as much as this - thereby negating the need for leadership skills. I see management skills as resource-allocation based and leadership skills as for the people-facing management positions.

    Back in the day of old Indonesia, we have Ki Hadjar Dewantoro, a prince who chose to be a teacher for the new nation. His wisdom are really a guidance,
    1. Ing ngarso sung tuladha 》 give examplary behaviour when you lead
    2. Ing madya mangun karso 》 give encouragement to your team
    3. Tut wuri Handayani 》give applaus when your team member fly high

    This is an excellent way to breakdown how to get the members of your team to outperform the traditional norms. I am a 1969 baby and Hamza Khan is absolutely right. In order for individuals to exceed your expectations and the expectations they have set for themselves, you must lead them! Let them go! People who are managed hate to go work on Monday. They are always watching the second hand tick around the clock and they are not as productive. Individuals who are 'properly' led are inspired [influenced] to be great. They virtually never leave 'work' because they are committed to the success of the organization. You manage systems and processes. You lead people. Great talk @HamzaK

      Agreed. When routine work becomes overly 'routine', it becomes important to find more important ways of motivating team members, like making them aware that they enjoy being there, by choice, so they are more likely to be in a positive state when there
      Or to realize the hidden value that exists around them. Or make friends with like minded people there.

    "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things" - Peter Drucker Management is the efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.

    Managing the work v. managing the person is a powerful way to unleash potential by trusting the person to make responsible decisions (100% autonomy) and ensure successful, measurable results are delivered (100% accountability). It is long overdue to move away from location/time based thinking and into outcome based thinking. Work is something you do, NOT some place you go.

    I enjoyed this presentation and there is a lot of value for many tupe of industries. In my opinion, it is not a one size fits all solution. Customer facing organizations like a retail bank brach for example, would not function with you showing up 15 minutes late, as clients and associates would be impacted. However, businesses like the one you had, sure it does work for certain people. Unfortunately not everyone has the worl ethics you claim to have. Thank you!

    I agree.
    People are much too complex to manage.
    Too many emotions, thoughts, interests, wants, needs, biases, likes, dislikes which = too many variable outputs per management input.
    You'll never get maximum output trying to manage this range of human complexities, it's too complicated with too many unseen triggers for negative reactions and negative results.
    Leading is a support based creative endeavor/relationship.
    If people are giving the reigns, opportunity, and inspiration to be their best, then you never have to constantly tell them to be their best, they're already motivated.
    If they're motivated ppl will ask for input and assistance.
    If they don't, then they'll show this in their results and won't be around very long to drag the company down if they simply are interested in being productive and attempting to achieve at their highest level.

    As a former High performance Sales Manager- Going 27 consecutive quarters w sales growth and 34 out of 35 quarters- one of the main contributing factors was me telling my sales team to never address me as their manager! I told them that your parents didnt raise you for 18 years, take you from totally depending on them and teach you independent living skills , so you can enter the world with a label on your forehead saying, management position available, please inquire inside!! No! No ! Never call anyone your manager! You are the manager of yourself and your life! That position is never delegate to someone else!! No one wants to be managed!! We love to be influence by individuals who know how to lead!! Especially those who are leading their life successfully! We all learn how to walk and talk by observing others and relying on ourselves!! Just get out of people ways and see them figure things out!! Thats how we all learn to walk!! We were and are relentless individuals!

    Excellent talk, thank you. IMV a good manager (I've only ever worked for one), needs four qualities: 1. a good understanding of the business and finance; 2. good organisational skills to ensure people are clear about their roles and carry them out; 3. work hard as expected of employees, lead by example; 4. good people skills, motivating (I hate to use the word 'manage') staff to carry out their jobs effectively. Good management is almost invisible, it goes on behind the scenes, but bad management leaves huge gaps in morale & performance, & leaves a vacuum for the worst of office politics.

    There are a lot of industries where it is difficult to continuously develop people professional and because of this they lose interest. I've seen see good articles where companies have directed training and focus into other areas of people's life with good results for a more continuous development like in arts or creative industries. I value learning very highly, I wouldn't want to work in a job where I'm treated like a tool to continuing working in the same way until I wear out!

    Around 10:40 he talks about not focusing on outputs, but rather focus on mere outcomes. This is brilliant! This is used in television all the time, I've been seeing this for years but I finally got the context for it. Very good work

    This is brilliant. Couldn’t agree more. Only when you step away, stop ‘managing’ in the traditional sense, do you get the best and worst out of people. And getting the worst is fine... it just helps you quickly realise who isn’t right for your business or team. Don’t spend years forcing people to do a ‘good job’ give them space to do a GREAT job and the natural deadweight will be revealed.

    I think his idea of leadership is great. But this works more in creative fields. Sometimes, it doesn't work in other fields though.

    8 hour work day? My job wants me to work 24/7 with the workload of 3 people, with no complaints, no raises-- because I'm getting to learn and work in new technologies!

      D Uni - I agree, as some orgs are woefully under-staffed & have completely unrealistic expectations for what some of their people can do. When quality of life suffers, sometimes the only way to teach them a lesson (especially when you have raised the issue in a proper way) is to leave that org. I realize this easier said than done during times like these.

    In the near future, maybe machine or AI can replace human labor in some industries. Why not? So then, people will seek for some creative and motivative works to do. Are there still many people for us to manage? We must lead people, and manage things. Totally agree!

    I understand he got a good point. I also used to have this point of view bc this is how I can work well. But overtime I realized that this view is a bit naive. This is with the assumption that every person in the team can self-manage. In practice this is difficult to achieve especially if you work in a team with diverse demographic. My boss tries to manage with leadership. good thing he has good patience, bc even I'm frustrated with his problem bc some people just can't be left with "rooms for creativity". I learnt a lot from this and realized my earlier naivety.

    As a leader, he or she should always lead by example, put your foot forward and do work you expect others to do and do all things in the open and do them well. Never ask anyone to do a task, but invite them to join you (the team). In most cases the team who sees their leader working hard will automatically want to help. I believe when we as leaders show the way by our hard work, involvement with our team and then have an honest follow-up for good and bad work. We develop a good team by our presence in the business we are challenged to run and operate. The leaders biggest challenge today is "social media vs. work ethics".

    Allowing someone to do what they love in their job and not "expect" then to work is also the key to success. Example. It is my job to sell product in retail, BUT I LOVE to help women feel good about themselves. So me being allowed to just be myself and HELP women at the boutique I work at, the sales increase. It is not about the job, but the journey that takes you to the destination.

      All employees can be, you have to have a clear vision and mission that resonates-those that don’t fit it usually self eliminate, you can eliminate the others that don’t eliminate themselves.

      True, in factories everything is set and planned years ahead. It is pretty hard to implement lots of creativity, even tho we all have infinite potential of it.

    Although not applicable for any type of profession, he’s so right. You can’t be treated like a factory worker when you’re expected to work any type of creative work - translators, journalists, designers, IT developers etc.

    Thank you Hamza. Your explanation has answered everything that I confront with generations of the older in my family. I have been trying to figure out why it is that some do not and cannot see the world other than what they know. Gen Y is exactly what you explain. I am generation Y and now a successful, generous and trusting person, that is self sufficient and fearless in growth. U have family, work and relationship balance as well as encouraging others to strive for their best of them. I love your talk. Thank you so much.

    This only works if your creating something that is not physical. If your building cars as an example things like that need to be done effectively and on a schedule. Structure is needed in most cases but flexibility can be beneficial.

    That's was gooood.i just dealt I have both qualities but the most important out if the two is the vision. Be a boss yes, but take them on a ride, through, vision, coaching and mentorship. I like this
