- Most people know the @gmc #Canyon as the Chevrolet Colorado’s professional grade cousin. And while that sounds like just marketing speak, with an all-new design of GM’s midsize truck platform comes more genuine brand separation. So, let’s see what the third-gen #GMCCanyon delivers in real time! #GMC #PickupTruck

I just detailed and sold a 2004 Toyota Tacoma in the same day, for 12K. The market is begging for SMALL, simple, and dependable trucks.
I agree with you, but with a turbo that will eventually go out, these current Canyons are anything but simple--your older tacoma, I'm sure, was a unkillable tank.
The manufacturers can't make smaller trucks due mostly to government regulation. Requiring a MPG standard for them is overstepping enough for something the free market is more than willing to define, but the way they measure it is the killer.
The trucks don't have to be more efficient in a way that makes them economically viable, they have to be more efficient as in so many MPGs per wheelbase and track width. In that instance, a small truck of yesteryear isn't as efficient, even though it gets more MPGs.
Proof that everything the government touches turns to sh*t.
@@HAL-dm1ehI'd argue the Maverick is a great counterpoint. It's essentially the size of those old trucks. The Hybrid for those that want a "truck" and the 2.0 4x4 for light truck duty. They don't have the tow capacity as these do sure, but I think they definitely could given slight chassis design modifications. Someone just put the 2.3 into a Maverick as well and it runs 11s in the quarter mile stock, I think the future iterations of the Maverick will be even sturdier. There's even rumors that Toyota will make a "subcompact" truck too. Yes, the simplistic build of old vehicles can't be redone, but technology allows us to cram more specs into smaller packages. Really, the only reason trucks are getting bigger is because people want them bigger, and are willing to pay.
@@HAL-dm1ehAmerica is done and has been for a long time
@@jcat96The problem with the Maverick is that Fords dealers are adding $4k "market adjustments" on every trim. That pushes the better trims up into the realm of the mid-sized trucks. I ended up buying a Colorado Trail Boss for a couple grand more than a Maverick. I hope the Toyota Stout sinks the Mavericks demand and the rotten dealers have to offer cash back.
My favorite feature of the truck is the interior. The look is more rugged for sure.
Man I’ve never been too much of a GMC or Chevy fan! But boy they sure are up in their game with their new truck line up! They look amazingly beautiful!👌🥰👍
AND is very 'rare.' GM is cutting back supplies to keep the prices inflated. The average price of a Canyon is almost $43-65K in my state and they aren't even Denali trim levels. 65K for a damn truck. Nope, they can sit on their rotting inventory. It is NOT selling. I've never seen a '23 Canyon/Colorado in my city all year and that says something...
agreed they are doing a legit job with their interiors and technology for sure. My only complaint( Not GM, all companies is this: see my message from above : This is what happens when the LEFT braindead in our government get involved and brainwash some of the American people. By all means, offer a 4 cyl as the base engine. But these fuel economy numbers are not impressive at all. If you offered the 5.3L naturally aspirated v8 with the 8 speed or 10 speed the economy numbers would actually be better let alone equal. See the government is a hoax as always. They are making people think the 4 cyl will save the earth and in reality it is just about them putting money in their pockets.
The thing that im a bit concerned with the the fuel economy, you get an average of 18.2, thats the average I get in my ram with the 5.7 Hemi. A large reason why people buy midsize is for an increased fuel economy
It gets 22
True but Idk if you trust the ratings.. these turbo motors seem to be able to get better than the ratings in real life.
I sold my 2017 Silverado that would average 21 mpg combined for a 2020 Tacoma that averages 15 mpg, boy do I hate that!!!!! Both with lifts and off road tires.
Makes no sense 😂
@@R32vdubb that afm dod cylinder deactivation is much better than people give it credit for.
@@R32vdubb What makes no sense is getting a Toyota. Dude. Come on man
Ive driven all the smaller pickups I think they should be made again just with a bit more safety but keep them mechanically simple and much smaller than the pickup trucks.
It will never happen with the government's push towards ev/hybrid. Never simple.
That mpg for a 4-banger is lackluster.
Most current V8 full-size trucks get about the same mpg..... So what's the real advantage to owning one of these?
The advantage is emissions compliance.
I was thinking about the same. I have a RAM 1500 5.7L V8 non hybrid. 22 MPG highway. No regrets.
@@alexisguilbe8040 I have the same. Average about 21, but it's always loaded up.
Size
@@gonepostal9101😂😂😂😂
18 mpg out of a 4 banger is kind of weak
It’s laughable
If you worried about mpg w a truck you shouldn't get 1
430 ft lbs isn't
@@petermello55and it’s literally no faster than a Nissan Pro4x. Which also gets more mpg and it’s more reliable.
Nice review. Glad you got to review the AT4. This is the trim I think most people will get.
Good thing its so rugged and has so much ground clearance, those speed bumps at the mall can be treacherous.
Thanks for the funny comment. We all needed that
So so funny.
Yea, that's why I went with the 2wd Elevation. Being in flat as a pancake , Texas who needs 4wd and I still have good lift and a off road suspension according to the stickers standard options itemization list. Go figure.
Only for your electric prius
When is GMC going to build an SUV version of the Canyon?
Like a proper competitor for wrangler and bronco, should be the right time!
They actually canceled a 4x4 v8 jimmy revival for the hummer ev. So sad.
when the truck isn't running, does that outlet in the bed draw directly from the battery?
It looks fantastic, and does touch on some things the prior gen was missing. But all the new tech also gives me significant pause.
3:23 "An available HUD comes with most trims."
Script writer worded that awkwardly, 'available' does not imply 'comes with.' Should have said, "A HUD is available with most trims."
Its funny when I see these modern GMC Syclone builds
They literally use GMC Canyons and put black paint and red decals 🤣
The Syclone was literally a compact pickup it was nowhere near the size of a giant new GMC Canyon
These new midsize trucks are the size of old fullsize trucks...and of course the Syclone was neither midsize nor fullsize to begin with
This guy should be a sports game commentator
Ugh too much tech. Wished they would just make small and simple trucks again.
Sorry but people don't want that. Just the reality of the world.
@@bmstylee Some parts of the world at least
If they did everyone would complain that it was outdated junk
Get the base model work truck no bells and whistles.. I agree with you though.
I know most are not fans of all these 4-bangers, but that’s where every single mid-size is going. Actually, they are all already there at this point, minus the Ford Ranger keeping the 6.
I prefer a 6 myself, and wish there was more power to be had with the 4s. Seems these 4s across brands are consistent with the average being 310/430 in power. The only one that really stands out is Toyota’s i-Force Max with 326/465.
I guess with basically everyone rocking the 4s now, we will find out real quick how they stand up to the off-road/tow beatings…
Nissan Frontier seems committed to the 6. And if you hurry you can still get a Tacoma with a 6.
Ranger always had a 4 turbo! Wrong mr
Don’t worry. 99.9% of male extenders never go off road…
Gladiator V6 as well
Where else can they stick a camera?
45,000.00 is MSRP so even if you get a good deal, you're still looking at mid 40's out the door. You can buy a full size extended cab truck for that much or a little more with the same mpg & tow & haul much more. I have a 2016 Tacoma & get 18-22 mpg if I stay around 65-70.
Love it! GM is killing it ! 🇺🇸👍
Very nice GMC Canyon, beautiful, resistent and with force
Mr Davis I will invite you to Uganda 🇺🇬 Kampala for a cup 🍵 of Coffee ☕... I love your presentations .. with so much details.
Thank you 🤗
So it gets the exact same mileage as my 2014 silverado crewcab 4x4. Not ok.
How does everyone like the all digital gauges, no headlamp switch and rear back up camera?
Love them. With my lights on Auto (Both Headlights and High Beams) I rarely even think about them. I've configured my Infotainment system, so turning on the Fog lights is easy (@ touches).
I'm enjoying my Canyon Elevation despite a few minor issues. Getting a door handle replace tomorrow so that my wife can unlock the doors with just a touch.

Handsome truck
How much....?😂😂😂
Hi just a question why is it that a block heater for a passport costs 90 dollars but the same vehicle in Canada costs $320 I can understand some mark up for shipping does anyone think that it is a lot of markup would love to hear some comments thanks have a good day
wow, finally made one look good. bed rulers... if you haul a lot those will probably be rendered unreadable after a few loads are scraped over them. $56K wow
Would you take this over a Silverado?
Because at this price you don't get anything but a low end Silverado
56K for a small truck... Tripping. Once taxes and all the fees it's well over 60K.. payments on that loan for A SMALL TRUCK is crazy!! These company's be thinking money grows on trees or what..smh
Look at the Tacoma prices
Well the full size trucks are $70k plus and you can’t fit them in most garages cause they are so big.
@@calebclark6739I used to work at a Chevy dealer and it seemed like the trucks just got bigger and bigger by the year it made no sense to me
0-60 in "only" 7.5 seconds from 310 HP? Did someone leave the parking brake on?
It;s a truck not a drag racer and it weighs more.
Weighs almost 6,000 pounds
Yeah those numbers are a bit high i think. I have a sierra with the same engine and it moves.
wow car and driver tested the old colorado and was way quicker with the V6. I'm kinda disappointed from performances
motorweek got 8 seconds to 60 with the old colorado v6
The public stopped buying those
Has GM solved the dead batteries and screens caused by OTA updates? I know when Verizon updates my phones they always come with the warning to make sure they are plugged in to the charger.
Looks great in and out, but it's only as good as its drive train.
Very Nice (AT4X) I would love to have one. I have 2 trucks, A 09 Silverado and my boy a 75 GMC Sierra Grande 4x4 yep a 49yr old truck with 758,000 miles on it. I tow a toy hauler full of quads out to the desert all the time. So do they last?? You bet you ass they do. Just take care of them. USA1 GM1 Springfield Armory 1
"We averaged an acceptable 18.2MPG" NO!!! 18MPG IS NOT ACCEPTABLE in 2023!!! It's dreadful. I averaged 22MPG in my 1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max... over 30yrs ago!!!
Considering the lack of capabilities & features compared to the GMC, the 4 mpg is not much of a compromise to be honest .
It has a 21.4gallon fuel tank. Assuming Motorweek's 18.2mpg average, that means it only has a range of 389 miles - when you're not carrying anything in it!!!
Every 389 miles you MUST put $75 into this truck.
Just like the last generation what's your point
$75? I wish…. Where I’m at, it would be $110 every 389 miles.
GM, wait until the Tacoma hits the dealer lots. It's Game Over!
🤣🤣🤣
I’ll be waiting! I want to get one of these new canyons for cheap
About $10 of the window sticker is for the CEOs pay.
5% of every vehicle is for the uaw
@@B86432 People who actually assemble the vehicle.
Way overpriced for a turbocharged four cylinder that will not last nearly as long as a naturally aspirated V6 engine for a much lower price. I'll stick with my 22 Frontier that I paid only $40,000 for because at least it will actually hold up!!!
I paid 39,900 for my 2018 crew cab 4x4 LTZ almost 4 years ago. This inflation really has gotten out of control. You will still be better off buying a used silverado over this hands down. Good looking truck though. Way over priced. IMO
My 6.2L Trail Boss Silverado LT gets almost the same fuel mileage as this 4 cylinder. Nice looking truck, but I will keep my 1/2 ton.
Right
$65,000 for a truck worth $40,000
I'll just buy used S10 for $5,000
Yeah I'll get the one with the front bench seat
They havent made those for 20 years
WHY are they making it bigger????????
Asinine prices, tiny engine gonna self-destruct at a young age especially if you're trying to tow/haul @ max gvwr. Needless electronic tech. Just make a damned truck that does work without the frivolous stuff driving up prices.
GM is trying to mimic the Tacoma instead of being creative and build their own identity. And with GM's legendary reliability record, for sure Toyota will have nothing to worry. I'll pass and will look for a Tacoma instead.
You are an American truck. Why not offer the front bench seats and column shifter? People like that on the bigger trucks, smaller ones should have it too like in the past. These are not even that small anymore either.
Lol this aint 1989 anymore
Shouldn't of gone down to that. Their own faults for no longer offering. I like that setup and nobody offers it anymore : (@@keithbellair9508
People want compact trucks. Might as well just make it a full size model. It’s already overpriced, and has the same fuel economy as a full size version.
"Bigger". FFS make it stop!!
Needs a V8
Or, at least one of the bigger V6s.
You'll need a time machine
Gm has turned into Ford
Would get better mileage with a v8
@@williamdavis4809 It just might. A V8 doesn’t have to work as hard.
Part of me died when I bought a new tacoma. They are so big. It's not what I want but it's the smallest truck on the market.
There are Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz if you want something smaller.
Crazy thing is this Canyon is slightly bigger than my 2003 Sierra and that was called a full size truck at the time
Wrong.
Go with the Colorado. It's headlights are at least in the right place. That tan color is awful!
SLOW!!!
The Chevrolet variant looks much better! The GMC's front end looks too much like the outgoing ZR2
Paying 2,000$ every 2 years for navigation is a deal breaker w these new trucks
Just use your phone for free with apple car play....duh
@@atg1338that's dumb as hell no buying a featured trim package to use my phone Everytime sometimes there isn't phone service or Internet available pay for top trim to use phone 😂 yeah no don't want to plug my phone in or worry about it I didn't buy a phone I bought a vehicle keep it I'll switch brands id buy the base one if I'ma plug my phone in not spend 50k on a top trim 1/4 ton to not get all the features I paid for
are you typing from the pre iphone era?
People still use the factory navigation on cars?
Smaller trucks are "lifestyle vehicles". They aren't really meant to be logical insofaras being functional. They also are not meant to be durable.
most of the full size pickups in my area are "lifestyle" vehicles as well
First two generations were junk
This is a toy, not a truck
Since I cannot comment on the retro review I'm commenting here..
I have been watching MotorWeek over 30 years..
I cannot watch newer episodes do to the electric vehicle reviews...
Just wanted to let you know you are loosing a loyal viewer...
Car enthusiasts don't care about electric vehicles...
GM junk
Beautiful Truck BUT the GM 4banger Turbo will NOT last 200k miles GM already having problems with the electronics
These trucks ride horrible 404 in video. I took a test drive and will not buy this generation truck.
That is amazingly ugly. Looks like the Aztek's designer was let out of his cage again.
The only thing with GM you can be sure of, you'll always feel like you're in a depressing tomb. Replacing actual interior color with jet black (so creative), and maybe some colored stitching; if you pay for higher trim levels. Wait, Toyota is now offering interior color options; moreover, it will last much longer that ANYTHING from GM. I wish our car companies were something to brag about, but they're not, nor do they actually care to be. They sell Displays, even the headlights are controlled in them. Hopefully they'll do that full time, and stop making crap, overpriced trucks.
Companies like GM will keep charging more for less, because people like you allow it. @@Acejustforalaugh
Overpriced trash. The screens are already breaking and the batteries are already being drained trying to update software.
Blah blah blah
Way too damn expensive... drove a Sweet ass Texas edition 2014 crew cab Toyota Tacoma... sits up tall, peppy v6. Plenty of room for an adventures college guy... I trust toyota dependability
