I have the same year. Ride to work, trailer it to the mountains, ive taken it all over Wyoming. Usually ride 8-12,000 feet. Ive taken it down to low elevation in colorado a few times, where its only 5,000 feet. These bikes go anywhere and do everything. No radiators to leak. Theres a reason they are a legend.
Hell yeah brother .... I'm working in northern Michigan right now and I went all the way to Sheridan, Wyoming to pick up a 1987 version of your bike( the twin carburetor model). The bikes are real barn find hadn't been started in 22 years. Might end up being one of the nicest ones around . Once the bike warms up it starts running really flat got to figure out a pesky ignition problem but.
Over the years I’ve had a total of 8 Xr and XL from 125 to 650s. I have a 1985 XL 600 with a little under 26,000 miles that I’m still riding today and I just did 114 Miles in the desert. I’ve also had 2 DRZ 400 S That we’re good bikes the only thing is On big sandhills like we have out here in the desert the 400 wouldn’t make it in my old XL 600 still able to climb those hills. But one thing I miss about the 400 is the electric start at 75 years old kicking the 600 takes a little bit of work.
Where are you at ? Super cool bike ! just went out west and picked up a older version of your bike I'm up in the little Traverse Bay area of Michigan. I have mine pretty much stripped down because it has been stored in a barn for 22 years. Got it started it was a real ripper when it was cold and I developed a heck of a flat spot when it would get warmed up. It's a little bit of a pain in the ass version ... 1987 with dual carburetors. But every time I get tired of working on the bike I watch videos like yours lol
@@2acres933 instant sub . Cool channel , I grew up with a Honda XRS and xl's some of the best bikes ever made I was looking for a big bore for quite a while when I found this one. I'm going to go through your whole channel you seem like an cool guy
@@2acres933 awesome .. I think you have the coolest collections of atc's that they have ever seen in my life LOL. I do get down to your neck of the woods quite often I was in Suttons Bay today as a matter of fact
They are pretty darn reliable machines. But there is still a large amount of parts available on line. I needed a new de-comp rocker arm for mine when I first got it. Got it shipped in 3 days.
There's a specific starting procedure for these bad boys. Otherwise you'll just be kicking by chance. Full choke, slow to moderate kick several times till the starter feels solid and hard to kick down. You aren't trying to start it here. You're finding top dead center. Pull your decompression lever and then kick the starter down a little less than half way down, also not trying to start it. Let the starter come back to the top, let go of the decomp lever, give her a solid kick.and she'll fire right up. If it has been sitting for a bit you may need to do this a couple times but most times you'll get it on the first or 2nd try. Enjoy the BRP!! Really great bikes
@@2acres933 Just keep your 600. I own a 650r, and its a beast, but for what you're doing a 600 is just fine. Mod it out and you can make more power than a 650. Air cooled simplicity is nice for dual sporting as well

I hear ya, electric start is nice. But it’s nice just to have a basic kicker. And you can’t beat the torque of the XR600r!
I think they look best with the oem head light and or the duel Baja lights
Great bike I wish I still had it.
Thanks i also just subscribed 😀. Good luck with your channel and xr. Will watch more later 👍👍👍
Same here bud. Thanks

Appreciate it. Love riding the classics when I’m not busy with work. Me any my buddies ride most in the winter. Maybe we can link up this winter.

XR is the best 💪
Agree wish I found out about these bikes years ago! Mad torque right off the bottom!
Thinking about buying one, but am concerned with parts availability! How is parts availability for these bikes?

A beauty thanks for posting
Thank you bud!
get some 46kg forkspring. made a huge difference
What’s your weight for reference? Thanks

Great machines!

Im about 5'7 and 200 pounds, had a few 250's and I feel like I need more power. Will I have trouble kicking this bike over?
It’s actually easy to kick. And has a clutch on the kicker recoil so it won’t sent you flying. Pretty cool design!

Great vid and bike 👍👍. My channel all about the xr’s. They are my fav bikes😀
Heck yeah bud just subscribed!
Sell your 600 and get a XR650R. You will not regret it.
If I come across one, possibly. Going to enjoy this bike for at least the next year.
Good idea, I might sell my 600 for 650
I looked into the xr650r 3 lbs lighter then the 600r and 15 more hp! I’m keeping my eyes out for one!

Great bike. I’ve tried to grab a couple 650r’s I. The last year, haven’t found the right deal yet.
I’ll buy it back from you!!
I’m going to hold on to the Xr for a bit
