This is the third episode of the series so far, and in the first episode the explanation is basically "I soloed yellow with butterfree as a kid, let's do it for all pokemon games."
Fully agree that Pokemon looks better in 2D, not sure if the employees at Gamefreak are just bad with un-fixed-camera games or what. The Colosseum games sort of alleviated the problem of everything looking empty, by setting it in the desert, so the emptiness felt appropriate. I also just prefer spritework for the in-battle Pokemon, the posing is always better. I think 3D models CAN work (the Stadium models/animations are good), but at this point there's hundreds pokemon to make models for compared to the original 150, and the workload strain affects the quality a lot.
