    "Some Star Trek fan will answer us" about how a transporter works. It's my time to shine; I got a whole Star Trek channel. The short answer (per the actual creators of the show) is, "it works very well, thank you."
    The somewhat longer answer is that the show itself is pretty inconsistent about it. But the intention seems to be that basically your atoms are converted into energy, and those specific packets of energy are sent to the target location and re-converted into matter. But it also transports your "neural energy" as its own thing, which in the show is effectively your soul (which people do canonically have). It builds your body back, then plugs your soul into the shell. Critically, your neural energy maintains consciousness throughout the transport cycle. We have previously seen a guy's perspective through the whole cycle, and he's aware the whole time.
    But I'm still 100% convinced it murders everyone who transports. Starfleet is lying to us.

      Am I remembering correctly that Dr. McCoy tries to avoid transporter travel as much as possible?

    • @Oscuros
      @Oscuros 17 днів тому

      That's what Bones argues in series 1. He'd been transported and he said that because he'd been broken down and effectively destroyed, this could be another iteration of himself, and that the original was destroyed. He also asked about his soul. This is why I personally only watch ToS and the movies and accept nothing since then, because of how I reacted as a kid and now that I'm qualified in philosophy as well as a couple of other things, it's even more so with that personal preference.
      Those are the obvious questions that any philosopher would ask if confronted with technology like that, plus McCoy's role was to be sceptical and probing, constantly asking about Kirk's or Spock's sanity or ethical rectitude. It's better in ToS before they flesh it out more, but it seems to be related to the food and drink creation technology regarding the transubstantiation (sic).

    @16:00 Austin you're so fucking right about how to view paintings honestly... I'm a fine arts painter, so I'm particularly biased, but one of my biggest beefs with art museums/galleries is that 5 minutes is nowhere near the attention span necessary to let a really good painting sink into you. Tbh I think a certain subset of people don't "know how to interact with art" (though there is no WRONG way, just to be clear. It's different for every individual), and the pressurized and exhausting environment of a museum is not conducive towards the interaction to begin with (bonus points if they do not provide any accessible, actually useful information regarding the pieces or artist). I once stayed overnight as a guest in a gallery and the opportunity to really learn, study, and develop a relationship directly with a painting was rather profound.

MSM does it, podcasts do it, the only time I don't hear allegedly is in casual conversation, but I've never actually heard of anyone being in legal trouble for not using the word allegedly? 3:56 I think the idea is that the transporter breaks you down into subatomic particles and then does the whole E=mc^2 thing to convert the matter into electromagnetic energy (light), then you travel as light and arrive instantaneously because photons don't experience time. As far as sci-fi is concerned, it's a pretty believable fantasy technology.

    If I recall correctly, the transporter turns your matter into energy, beams that energy into wherever you are going and turns that energy back into matter, there is an episode from The Next Generation where they talk about basically the same questions you guys are talking about (A couple, actually) there is "Realm of Fear" in which a random dude that is terrified of transporters deal with the fear and there is "Relics" in which they find the original Scotty that survived in a lost ship by rigging a transporter beam to never finish beaning him and keep him in a sort of stasis as energy (and I guess data)
    I love TNG so much (No, I did not know the names of the episodes from the top of my head but I remember the episodes and google the names)

      It makes more sense to completely atomicly dissemble a person and then just store the material to create a person being transported to this side. The transporter on the other side would do the same thing. Transmitting the data to reassemble is one thing, but I feel like it would be much easier to just keep a stockpile of material to rebuild a person at each location, and you being vaporized just restocks it. Like 3D printing material if you could melt down a piece and turn it back into wire.

    Totally played Starcraft and WC3 in my aunt's kitchen. There was something about sharing a novel luxury like a PC in a public place in the home: by necessity, it was rationed between everyone in small precious doses to do simple things like play a small game, check email or talk to friends for a while. Technology had yet to pervade every waking second of our lives and make it easier than ever to entertain ourselves with no one around. Your family members/roommates could see and choose to take part, or at least know what you were up to at that moment. I feel like I use tech and entertainment to drown out the lonely hours more than enhance human interaction like back then. Also bonus if your comp was in the kitchen because soda and string cheese were like 3 steps away (to take the edge off of losing with Eagle54)

    With regards to art, I hear what you're saying about being able to view the art in your home and in different emotional states, etc. But I find what happens for me is that the art on my walls just becomes part of the wall and I stop looking at it very often unless I do so very intentionally. Whereas in a museum I'm confronted with new and unseen things and it's easier for those things to have an impact. I've definitely been stopped in my tracks at a museum by a piece that made me feel a certain way, and that doesn't happen at home, but also you can't develop a relationship with the museum piece, unless you're going there all the time. Probably the curation/atmosphere of either location can entrance or detract from those experiences as well.

    Austin, I appreciate you examining all of your behaviors from an ethical perspective. If everyone did that, then the world would be a much better place. That being said, you should really listen to your dad’s advice.

    In-game wedding story:
    Two Minecraft regulars asked me to marry them on an ancient survival server.
    So I spent weeks building a cathedral with pews, altar, etc. and learning about the ceremony, vows, speeches & paperwork.
    On the day, ~50 players logged on to attend the ceremony 😅 teenage me married them in text chat and gave them "paper" as certificates 😂 They later married irl

    I know I am late to the party and someone has probably explained that already, but how teleportation works in Star Trek is, they've found a way to transmute energy into mater and vice versa. So old you would become just energy. Holodecks are supposed to work the same way, use energy to generate mater.
    In reality what people are discussing about teleportation is that you would need two synchronized chambers. One you enter, the other one has some sort of material. Once the teleportation is initiated old you get's dissolved, new you is reconfigured from the donor material.
    Safe way to do it would be using a portal like wormholes.
    Sorry for being annoying, I find these topics interesting and love talking about them.

    the dust conversation is interesting because i think you might actually be dealing with different dust? i think humidity makes dust stick to things more and nola is one of the most humid places in the country, in Florida it can become like a really gross coating that has to be wiped off. that doesn't happen in less humid places, not sure if places mem has lived were dry enough to make a difference tho

    What's the difference between "dying" by teleportation and just falling asleep. I lose awareness of myself when I fall asleep but wake up with the same memories. It feels similar to me in that my consciousness could have "died" to some degree before waking up and continuing on with my life like nothing happened.

    34:16 As someone who took a few cybersecurity courses in college, it brings joy to my heart to hear someone has started using a password manager. It's not only a huge upgrade in security hygiene, but it actually makes your digital life a lot easier to manage. Usually security is a compromise of convenience, but in this case it's a win-win scenario (after the initial drag of adding existing accounts). No more countless password reset emails, and no fear in needing to sign up for yet another account somewhere.

    • @CompiledGabriel
      @CompiledGabriel 19 днів тому

      The convenience still cost you when your password manager gets compromised but I agree it is a worthy tradeoff

    • @SlimShady-gs8pl
      @SlimShady-gs8pl 17 днів тому

      Yeah, best to use one that gets regular security audits like 1Password and Bitwarden. In the past we've seen LastPass get pwned.
      As a software engineer my setup is overkill; I run a file server to sync my keepass database across devices, and it requires a key file that I never let touch the internet + my master password lol.

    Tornadoes are super cool. I think we as Americans are desensitized to them, but they don't happen very often anywhere else in the world.
    Volcanoes are also amazing. You both should look up Rotorua, New Zealand. It's an active volcanic area. They have tons of steam vents just coming up. I saw sewer grates corroded by sulfur, it felt otherworldly

I was terminally online and in chatrooms very young too and got very lightheaded a lot and also almost passed out at the first concert I went to (Imogen Heap) and the lady who helped me also thought I was on drugs, which I'm sure was alarming for her because I was like 13, haha.
