Where I live in Canada we have the option of showing up on polling day and telling the polling officer that "I wish to decline my ballot". Thereby participating in democracy by officially declaring that none of the candidates are worthy of my vote. The number of declined ballots is listed in the election results alongside the votes for the candidates. I am proud to say that my riding leads the country in declined ballots for the last few elections. More places need this option.

The Biggest joke elected was Tony Blair. And he managed to survive 13 years. Everybody on here saying how intelligent Murray is, I watched this, and realized this is what I have been saying for the last Fifty years. Telling people "if you don't take part you have no say". You can't moan and whinge if you don't go and vote. Murray is a great Historian, but by his own admission is not a Politician and being an Oxford graduate doesn't always translate into being intelligent. Anybody can get a degree in one subject its not that hard.
Running a country isn't about technical qualifications, there are permanent secretaries of each department with teams of experts running things. What's needed is someone with a natural ability to smell what the public want and then be all over these secretaries and ministers to make sure things happen. The last 4 governments have moaned that its hard to make things happen quickly because of the way the civil service is set up. You need a PM to radically alter how ideas get executed but none seem to have this skill. Even our local councils are gummed up with pen pushing types who want to have a meeting about a meeting rather than make things happen.

Don’t agree on the ‘you must vote’ thing. Democracy is also the choice to withhold your vote if what you have to choose from does not speak to you. If you take it to the extreme level and you had the choice of Nazism and Stalinism, then would you be so eager as to say ‘you must vote’? I chose not to vote in that election because it called for no political reason, but as an ego fishing trip for May. None of the parties won me over with their campaigns and I didn’t want whoever won, to be able to say that they won with a high turn out, and thus legitimise their position. I deeply value my right to vote. What really devalues that right, is not my ‘not taking up my vote’, but the fact that no one at the top of their parties in this country has proven themselves worthy of anything above acting like primary school kids every Wednesday lunchtime and making the worlds oldest democracy look like an infantile circus. There are some MPs in the lower ranks who genuinely care about making this country a better place, but sadly they never get anywhere near positions of influence. in the UK you can "spoil" your ballot by filling it in incorrectly in several ways; these are also counted and reported.
