    How come you chose to put the surge tank in the engine bay not the boot?

    • @boostedbuiltgarage
      @boostedbuiltgarage  5 років тому

      Many reasons:
      - Less plumbing
      - Is properly seperated from cabin by the firewall
      - Didn't want to waste boot space
      - Didn't want to have humming fuel pumps in my cabin
      - Didn't want any potential fuel smells in my cabin...
      To name a few

    @skepticalskeksis221 6 років тому

    Not the cleanest looking fuel line set up. But regardless your doing it right. All -AN fittings, braided hose and those bad ass radium rails. I would have included those optional Radium 3/8 NPT Fuel Pulse Dampers underneath your fuel rails to help dampen out some of those oscillating fuel pressure pulses that can be caused when that second pump kicks in. Accurate fuel pressure data being possibly the difference between a plus or minus of 40hp or so I would have incorporated them.
    Sorry about that rant there... I know you know how a fuel pressure damper works, lol.
    I knew it was getting long but them words just kept on flowing through my phalanges tho.

  • @kirkcastro2288
    @kirkcastro2288 6 років тому

    Just a noob question. Why change the incoming fuel from -8 to -6? Is it required that you feed it into smaller? I plan on doing this setup in the future along with tgv delete

    • @boostedbuiltgarage
      @boostedbuiltgarage  6 років тому

      If you're talking about where it goes from -8 to twin -6 one to each rail, it's because I don't need a twin -8 amount of fuel at each rail. Also the radium rails came with their quality -6 fittings for the rails so saved me spending hundreds on other fittings

    Is that surgetank a DW25L ? I have one my self but had read a lot about where to place it.Did you have to move anything to Place it where you did ?I´m thinking of the same Place. I have 2 255 lph pumps to and has Think about to let one feed every fuelrail, dont know if it works but my tuner should help me..As feedpump i shall use a dW300 or 400. I have read about people that makes 5-600 whp with just one pump, a DW400 intank pump so i dont know how it will be yet.

    • @boostedbuiltgarage
      @boostedbuiltgarage  6 років тому

      +Mattias Andersson It's an Aeroflow in engine bay surge tank. Fits two 044s or other brand equivalents.
      Didn't have to move anything major, just make some custom brackets etc.
      You don't really want 2 pumps running constantly, especially one per fuel rail, all it'll be doing is heating the fuel and recirculating a shit load. You'd also need a big return line to the tank.
      Feed pump doesn't need to be massive either.
      Yeah you probably could run one big pump, and many argue the pros and cons of twin vs single vs triple even. The way I see it - if it's all done right, have staged pumps, then they share the load a bit and keep the pressure up

    Surge tank in the engine bay? I never like leaving negative comments, but I've never seen that before & it's not the way I would go. You've got some rubber pieces on some of the fuel lines to stop heat transfer, but when there's about half a gallon of fuel sitting right above the engine...

    • @BramBiesiekierski
      @BramBiesiekierski 6 років тому +1

      Daemione
      Its fine to put a surge tank in the bay. And there are actually a number of benifits to doing it.
      1st, is the surge can is close to the engine, so a shorter run of large hose to the fuel rails. You dont have to re-do the existing harlines from tank on high power engines that would require it if the tank was in the rear. It is also usually very easy to find the OEM supply/return lines where they meet the engine, and hook in you surge can.
      2nd. Most car batteries are also in engine bay. So its a very short run for you thick gauge power cabling to run the pressure pump/s.
      3rd. Most ECUs are also close to the engine, usually just inside the firewall on the passenger side somewhere. So its easy to get your trigger for the main pump/s relay.
      4th. You arent putting fuel system components inside you boot/trunk area. (Or in the case of my car being a wagin, inside the passenger compartment.) So its also a safety thing aswell.
      As you say, heat in that location is not ideal. But realisticly it has very little effect on the system. Fuels cooling ability comes from its latent heat as it transfers from liquid to vapour. The heat before that is very small compared to energy pulled out during the state transition.
      The fuel heat can effect the tuning parameters and slightly change the amount of fuel injected. But i think it will be tuned on a dyno and the heat of the fuel while tuning would be representitive of while driving.
      I personally have my subaru surge tank down low on the passenger side of the firewall. (Basically where the down pipe would go, but on the opposite side of the engine.

      Boosted & Built Garage
      It works fine for most of the motorsport i have done. At the MC motorsport WA sprint championships i was previosly doing, i would basically go out for my runs with the fuel light just about showing. Sometimes even with it on. And the car would never surge. It was only sprints of about 2-3 laps. So i didnt need a large volume of fuel. And the wieght advantage of being able to run the main tank nearly empty was good. Without the surge tank, the car would surge at anything less than 3/4 full. So the tank allowed me to pull about 40kg of fuel out of the car.
      But i do have an issue at barbagallo raceway. I was getting surge at anything less than 3/4 full main tank. I believe the surge tank volume was too small (1.5L). And the main tank would surge for a large enough time to allow the surge tank to run empty. Then the engine would surge. Barbagallo raceway is a clockwise track and has a largish banked right hander that would usually cause the problem.

    • @Daemione
      @Daemione 6 років тому

      I don't have personal experience installing and/or running a surge tank... but companies like Deatschwerks do - addressed in their FAQ: www.deatschwerks.com/surge-tank-faq: "Engine compartment is not a good location for sure tank installation. Fuel reservoirs should not be located in close proximity to ignition sources. In addition, elevated engine bay temperatures can heat up the fuel in the surge tank which can cause engine detonation and shortened fuel pump lifespan."
      Radium's install kits for their surge tanks make a special note that they install in a "collision-safe area".
      Aren't there rules from several different sanctioning bodies that require surge tanks to be nowhere near high temperature exhaust or ignition in case of leaking?
      The ease of installation & routing lines & power cables reasoning doesn't work for me, if you're going to be running a car to the level which requires a surge tank, an extra 10 feet of hose & cable shouldn't be prohibitive.

    • @BramBiesiekierski
      @BramBiesiekierski 6 років тому +1

      Daemione
      There are also companys like Process West who specifically make surge tanks that fit inside engine bays. For example, Process west 3rd gen subaru tank fits down on the lower left side lower firewall. Which is a very well protected area in the event of a crash. www.processwest.com.au/products/subaru/wrx-sti-g3/my08-13-wrx-sti-anti-surge-fuel-system
      Deatshwerks probably say that because they need any excuse to justify why thier crappy unreliable fuel pumps fail all the time.
      As far as collision safety, inside the engine compartment is generally gonna be alot safer than inside the passenger compartment. (Remember this is a open wagon, there is no much room in the back that ISNT inside the passeger compartment). The engine compartment seperates the passenger compartment with something known as a "firewall". Its not hard to imagine why its called that. See this video for what happens when a fuel cell is ruptured INSIDE the drivers compartment from a rear end collison. ua-cam.com/video/cRLWxFm3pjE/v-deo.html Remeber, this is going into a subaru forester, which is a wagon and is effectively all open inside. Would you rather that explosion happen inside the passenger compartment or inside the engine compartment????

      Because I'm not using both pumps til it's on full noise... Flowing an 044 for 2 injectors full time would be a terrible idea, aerating fuel and heating it up, cause back pressure etc. Would be fine if using a pwm pump speed controller though
