    Despite recognizing the performance reputation of the Suby boxer motor, I am far of being impressed of the assembly complexity of this engine. *I even learned a few points that may be applied elsewhere and I am REALLY impressed that you not only included the stripping of the thread but the repair of it** - many UA-cam 'experts' would have covered that up - Well done!
    **I have worked with some very expensive alloy parts that had ALL threaded holes heli-coiled as they are much stronger than threads directly into the alloy and are much more resistant to problems with multiple rebuilds. To that end, where practical, I prefer to use studs in alloy.

    No doubt you are a master builder, great job. Is it me or you had to change the oil filter on this engine? Or maybe this is a whole other motor, the one you put on part 2 was red, now this one's black 🤔🤔🤔🤔

    • @larrygall5831
      @larrygall5831 5 років тому +1

      If I had to guess, the first one was just a cheap filter he keeps in the shop, and it was fitted to protect the mating surface / threads, and keep anything from getting inside. Then he put a decent filter for shipping that the customer could use if they wanted. Putting the new one on first, it would possibly get dented, and it would look kind of ghetto being on a top-line engine like this. That is my guess, anyway.

    Very nice. I once owned a 1992 Subaru SVX which had a 6 cy. engine that looked very much like the one you just assembled. At about 55000 miles one of the timing belt idler pulleys failed, tossing bearing balls around inside of the timing belt cover. I replaced the belt and all the idlers (working in a cramped one car garage) but it would not start. It took hours of investigating to finally discover that the camshaft position sensor (see 8:29) had been damaged by one of the bearing balls being jammed against it by the cam sprocket. It took 2 weeks of searching to find a replacement. I used the car for 13 years, 254000 miles. After that I carried a set of idlers, a belt, and a cam position sensor in my toolbox, and swapped the idlers whenever I changed the belt. The sensor remained unused when I sold the car.

    Congratulations, and thank you for the excellent completion of the engine. It made it all the better without a running dialogue, with just the sound of your tools. Your hot dog, sausage dog, approved as well. Thanks for the upload.

      I've had several brand new Subaru short blocks strip that bottom bolt out and I use torque wrenches for ALL assembly work. Definitely not how you want a build to go, but better than a head bolt stripping

      I remember my first time. I used every word I knew and invented a few. Now its no big deal. On aluminum, you should expect it from time to time. Even the best fluff up once in a while. The guy that admits his mistake and fixes it is what sets him apart from the rest.

    I replaced a timing belt on one of these and really enjoyed it. These engines are cool. It's crazy what you can do to one of these. I started my career some 40 years ago working on Volkwagen Type 1's. Great design.
