I know that this is college, but it still deserves to get mentioned, Kyle Vantrease was a kicker at a 2-4 Buffalo team. When the starting qb was injured, he took over as qb and led the team to a 7-5 season in 2019 and a bowl win. The team is 10-2 since he took over, he only has 6 touchdowns this year because star running back Jaret Patterson has lead the offense. They are headed to their 3rd straight bowl game

I'm going to be the asshole who adds context. Vantrese was a fulltime backup QB. But the starting punter, Evan Finegan got hurt at Penn State. So he became the punter, then the starting QB, Matt Myers goes out with an injury, then he takes over the starting punting and QB job, leading them to a bowl game.

Numbers assigned in the NFL corresponds to a player's position (and eligibility to receive the ball or not, mainly on offense), so yes, a recently converted wideout turned corner can keep wearing the 10s or 80s for the rest of the season. However, if the player chooses to permanently convert in this case (offense to defense), the number must change. If the player returns to being a wideout or converts to running back, the number can be retained.
Off-topic, Devin Hester originally wore #23 as a Bear because his primary position was originally as a cornerback, even though most punt and kick returners are usually drawn from the receiver corps (and wear 10s or 80s).

Jason Peters went from defensive tackle to tight end and will be a hall of fame offensive tackle when his career is over

The whole point was they switched positions once they got to the league, no disrespect to Edelman

Montgomery just started at RB for the Saints today after their entire RB roster got tossed by the NFL today. He was on their active roster as a WR, so this still appiles ;)

Fun fact, that 2006 Lions team that Furrey played for also featured Josh McCown switching from QB to WR in a couple games

You could put someone like Tyreek Hill on here who was drafted to play that hybrid RB/WR role but committed himself to WR and became one of the greatest deep threats in NFL history. He ranks 5th in yards currently but 11th in receptions in 2020 and he also leads the league in receiving TDs with 15. Not bad for a 5th round pick.

Just this year alone, Deebo Samuel, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Kendrick Bourne, all of whom used to be exclusively wide receivers, have all settled into WR/RB hybrid roles. Not sure if that counts, but it's still cool.

Logan Thomas blowing up this year has been one of my favorite stories of this season.

    This is random, but...
The NCAA football game had Logan Thomas listed as a Tight End coming into his freshman year at Virginia Tech. The only reason I know that is because I almost won the Heisman with him in an online Dynasty with 7 or 8 of my friends. Ahhh the good ol days of NCAA football. #bringItBack!

You missed Roy Green - Starred as both a Receiver and D-Back. He logged over 550 catches, 4 interceptions and 100 kick/punt returns

Would be great to see more teams pull the number trick... draft in later rounds or something a RB or receiver who could do well at another spot, play him at his original position for his rookie year, then switch him to something else so he can keep his number out of position.
(The NFL should probably loosen or dump the uniform number rule anyway)

Unlike in basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer, where players competent at multiple positions are seen as better-rounded players, it's just not really a thing in football. Any idea why?
