For football fans, few things are sadder than watching the rapid and unexpected decline of a superstar player.
Teh reality is that the vast majority of all-time greats just couldn’t be elite from start to finish. Almost every Hall of Famer fell off late in their career. But it’s especially difficult to see when a player goes from hero to zero in such a short period - thus preventing them from earning a spot in Canton.
Here are 10 NFL players who once looked destined for the Hall of Fame before shockingly falling off.

Todd Gurley was looking to be one of the greatest running backs until his knee gave up on him
I remember his knee being a concern coming out, I’m sure the Rams thought it would play out like another rb they drafted Steven Jackson.
Such a shame, that was a fall-off of epic proportions
He was a long shot coming out because of his injury history but yea he was well on his way
His knees gave up when he played for Georgia lol
Sad man, I was a fan of his.
Todd Gurley man like watching him play was so magical, for sure look like he was destined for a gold jacket but sadly injuries came and was never the same 😢
Dude he was so exciting to watch but those knee injuries were the reaper for his gold jacket career
They didn’t care about my boy I love the rams but I’ll never forgive them for running my guy into the ground like that knowing he was already hurt
@@drizzyuzumaki8753 he had an arthritic knee, nothing the Rams did changed that. After he tore his knee up in College his knee was on a timer sadly.
@@Canibegreat so if you smart enough to know that you’d think they would be too my point was they didn’t care about how long he lasted he was just a number on the board
@@drizzyuzumaki8753you must be new to how this $8 billion business works.
There have been far better players who’s career was cut short due to injuries 😂😂 it’s a contact sport. What do you expect??
Wow, Aldon Smith went from a dui to the Raiders? Color me surprised, what an absolutely shocking and unexpected outcome.
but after he got released by the raiders he sat out a few years and ended up with the cowboys and ended up getting in trouble yet again.
@@danielcorreard3746 wow yet another stunning development
Usually the other way around lol
Lol
You best do your homework on teams with the most players in trouble with the law, cause there are only 7 teams with less players arrested than the Raiders. You been watchin' too much Skip and Shannon..
Daunte Culpepper’s injury in 2005 was the main reason he declined terribly. It was a brutal injury that essentially blew up his knee. His elite athleticism was gone after that.
larry johnson and chris johnson had 2 seasons each that were unreal
Immediately thought about Johnson
Especially CHRIS Johnson (who had a 2,000 yd season).
Chris Johnson, Larry Johnson, David Overstreet, Josh Norman, D'Angelo hall, cam chancellor, cam Newton, Josh Gordon
Josh Norman?
Josh Norman & Josh Gordon, both only had 1 All Pro season, that’s all. Both couldn’t back that up when they had the opportunity.
Chris Johnson and Cam Newton were great players
Man the Dez one still hurts to this day! He went from a top 5 WR to outta the league so quick! I’ll always love Dez tho cuz I’m his prime years he made so many incredible plays and has so much passion! He’ll forever be one of my favorite Cowboys players!
I know man. Once Romo went down, on top of Dez' own injuries it was pretty much a wrap. Dak didn't have the arm talent to get Dez the ball the way he needed it. I remember Romo calling a Cowboys game back in 17-18 I believe, and he was describing how Dez has to have the ball thrown to him a certain way because he wasn't the fastest guy or the best route runner
@@tonysr1983yeah Dez never studied route running . He simply depended on his physical talent to beat the defender. After a few injuries and age he could no longer get open and make the catch.
Let's be real there is a good chance he still gets in.
It's cowboy privilege
@@gofigure84not only that he played long enough to prove his worth
I was completely prepared to see Antonio Brown on this list
Same
We all were lol.
Or Le'Veon Bell
The only reason he not go be in it is because what he did off field and definitely had a hof career on it
Antonio Brown is definitely a HOFer.
Id put Clay Matthews on the list, remember him being dominant at the start of his career before moving inside to MLB
He got off the roids is what happened 😮
@@mikemarc92 Lol listen here playing outside and inside are two different things, u can say roids all u want but some of the greatest MLB will openly admit they can't play outside.
Love how you forgot to say Priest Holmes set the NFL rushing TD record in 03.
I was at the week 17 game against the Bears where Holmes broke the broke... also at the Colts game 2 weeks later. Wanted Peyton manning to get the flu after that game
And a trio of pro bowl selections
Soon broken by Alexander and then the king Ladainian..So it doesn't matter. Short lived reign..He might have lasted longer if he didn't get knocked out by lights out Merriman..
@@YuckFouTube2 I was there too. If the Chiefs could have got the Colts to punt just once I think the Chiefs would have pulled out the win
@@scsmith4604 i thought the whole stadium was gonna come down then Dante brought that kickoff back
As a saints fan I could see Michael Thomas being one of these players
He was overutilized
You can't be serious😂
Micheal Thomas Slant Merchant
Andrew Luck and Jamal Charles could have been in Canton if it wasn't for injuries.
Todd Gurley was the best running back I've ever watched. From his first touch at UGA( kick return for td), you just knew he was special. When he tore his knee his last year in college, i had my worries. He was on the road to be an all-time great in the pros. That damn knee man...
id put leveon bell on this list. i don’t think people realize how good bell was and how much he changed the game for running backs
The game was already changing into a passing league when bell was in the league. Marshall and Roger Craig really were the biggest RBs to pave the way for today's backs.
That's who I added. He fell off the cliff by holding out in 2018.
Do greatest year for each division in nfl history
Alexander and Holmes should definitely be in the hall of fame.
If Steve Hutcheson hadn't left for BIG money, Shaun Alexander would be in the hall. Hutch and Walter Jones (hall of fame) cleared almost every defender , and made big holes in defenses.
@@karlzipp3706Similar situation in KC and Seattle. Alexander had Hutch and Walter Jones both HOFers, Priest Holmes had Willie Roaf and Will Shields both HOFers.
Yes and no. If you're comparing their short dominant years to Davis' gotta remember Davis ran off a 2k and 2 superbowls during that stretch, so that's why he's in.
If you can't add SB champion in with all those accolades. Doesn't really separate them from the pack. Unfortunately RB is just like WR, there's a lot of dominants throughout nfl history, with short and long tenures with no trophy.
On the other hand they should get in on their own merit. That would definitely mean Bo Jackson, rightfully, gets in
Kinda shocks me that neither still are considering some of the other dudes who've made it.
@@simonhowell4486I wouldn’t necessarily say Super Bowl cause Gayle Sayers is in however my guy is telling me that the voters are looking at the offensive line those 2 had which is hypocritical
John Jefferson comes to mind.
He was one of the most electrifying receivers in the league well on a HOF trajectory and an integral part of the Air Coryell offense. Was never the same after getting traded to Green Bay.
That’s a good one
@@nick94nwI concur w/that.
@IOSPeteCho… I totally agree!
@@Engineers1985 Likewise here. I remember when JJ was part of a GR8 trio of WRs (along w/Wes Chandler & HOF Charlie Joiner).
Jimmy Graham comes to mind for me.
Just wasn’t used at all in Seattle! Breese understood he was a great weapon!
@@outlaw3572as a hawks fan it was so disturbing to watch him become a ghost after sending off our best lineman arguably for him
I picked him on fantasy that year and……..yea
As a Steelers fan, part 2 has to include Lev Bell.
Jimmy Graham, Jamaal Lewis, Leveon Bell, Shawne Merriman
Without watching the video yet, Gurley and Brian Orakpo comes to mind. Also anyone remember Eric Moulds?
Greg Hardy, Adrian Foster, Le'Roi Glover, Henry Thomas, Clay Matthews Jr, Keith Millard to name a few.
I feel like Michael Thomas is gonna be on here
I was wrong
@Shadow Well you’re right about Kam, but OBJ is still in the league and active, so we don’t actually know if he still may be good enough or not to make it to HOF.
Man the rbs in the early 2000s was krazy. Holmes Alexander LT Ahman green Portis McAllister Ricky and jamal Lewis were all elite
I would absolutely love for a part 2 for this video! ❤️
Sterling Sharpe belongs in the hall. He was mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Rice during his time. But he got injured and never came back.
Keep up your fantastic videos, God bless you guys
Jevon Kearse immediately came to mind. After exploding in Tennessee and having a decent start in his Philly tenure, dude was never the same and we never saw "The Freak" like he was his early years.
Jadaveon Clowney should have his shadow showing up somewhere in here.
If AB doesn’t make the Hall then I give up, he’s literally one of the greatest ever easily
His attitude will probably have him out or waiting
Do you think he was better than TO
@@thomasthompson3861idk man TO was the man. Brown has hardware though... tough
@@thomasthompson3861 yes
@@lethalinjection2031 in what way?
Victor Cruz
Chad Johnson
Jamal Lewis
Warwick Dunn
Joe Horn
Brandon browner
The list goes on.
Billy Sims and William Andrews were both phenomenal RB's who both had career
ending knee injuries a few weeks apart in 1984. Of course TPS doesn't realize
football existed in the 20th century so I didn't expect them to be mentioned.
L.J.; SPOT-ON!!!!!
Do a video on the top 10 forgotten HOF, MVPs, Legendary players
Seeing how it ended so quickly for Todd Gurley is heartbreaking.
Love your video TPS
Carl Pickens (The WR for the Cincinnati Bengals in the early 90’s) I truly believe he would have been a HOF’er if he could have played with a young Brett Favre or Drew Bledsoe. Oh and Henry Ellard should be in the HOF too! The guy pretty much had 2 careers in one.
TPS’s knack for constantly mispronouncing peoples names should be in the hall of fame
Video request: top 10 times TPS mispronounced players names.
As a Bills fan born in '81, I can't believe that I forgot just how bad-ass Bryce Paup was. Probably because he was after the SB years. I appreciate you shouting him out!
As a Dolphins fan, Bryce Paup was a bad, bad man.
Nnamdi was a poor fit in Philly. He was a rock solid zone corner. Philly made him play man. That was literally the only issue. Its a shame. He was pretty good. And i really hope Aldon has gotten his stuff together. I am an alcoholic and always root for people trying to come back. I hope hes ok
Rooting for your recovery to continue. Nnamdi and Josh Norman's (Panthers db) are very similar in that regard. Went to Washington and was just a terrible fit. Still a good player at the time, just terrible scheme fit. It feels odd that isn't SEEMED to be considered more when players move in FA, but I guess schemes and coaches change often enough that it's probably harder to do when looking at a lot of teams.
Nnamdi actually strictly played man in Oakland which is what he excelled at.
@Michael Gandy I got it backwards. My bad. Point stands though. He wasn't a good fit in that defense
Similar to how Washington misused Josh Norman
@@michaelgandy4684not only that he would only play 1 side of the field in Oakland.
Add Leveon Bell to that list dude went from Barry Sanders and Marshall faulk to out of the league quick.
Okay how is steven jackson not on here he had 8 straight seasons with over 1000 yards rushing. all time rams rusher and .... then never won a big game and lost his chance with the pats along with wes Welker.... come on guys!!!!
Next can you do a countdown of the top 10 players who’s draft stock fell after a horrible combine performance
Could’ve sworn welker retired bc of his concussion issues??
Shaun Alexander was phenomenal but gets so little respect and recognition sadly even from some Hawks fans who should know better. He was a perennial 1000 YDS rusher and League MVP, the only player in franchise history and seemed destined for HOF, then suddenly he just a guy. I will always revere him. Go Hawks
He should be in the same Convo as Bo
AJ Green I thought had the potential to be a hall of famer but I think he fizzled out hard definitely on that back half of his career.
AJ still has a good shot to get in, at least I think he should.
But he has some cupcake pro bowls so that can be a factor
I love the way you praise Mr. Garfield. Although I feel like it’s time for you to go over his best movie and the one that endeared him into my heart. I would like to ask if you have a plan to go over HACKSAW RIDGE?
This just makes me want to see greatest potential players cut short by injury. Bo Jackson, maybe Percy Harvin with how electric he was when he was actually on the field and basically retired early from migraines or some such. 100% sure there's a ton on wrs too. I think it was like Hakim Niks that was doing awesome until 1,000 injuries and OBJ made everyone forget he was a player. I think it was him or Mario Manningham. Idk, I guarantee with even a little research it would make a banger video.
Nah it was the salsa guy. Remember he did the dance. VICTOR CRUZ!!
Honestly Antonio brown could fit here. I don’t doubt how good he was and I think he should be in the hall of fame, but I don’t think roger is gonna let him in for his recent antics
Goodell has NO control or input as to who gets into the HoF.
You aren't wrong. I think he's mentally ill and needs help. Look at his arena nonsense within the last month. I hate it for him because he was very good
@@E_Cleazy who does?
@EaglesFan There's a committee panel of about 50 at-large voters. Usually seasoned sports media experts that vote. One representative is from each NFL city and the rest are random.
no chance AB makes it. Doesnt have the numbers anyways
Bo Jackson was likey a 2 sport Hall of Famer if he hadn't ever had that hip injury
Devin Hester... killed as a returner, but never panned out as a receiver. He had Jay Cutler throwing to him most of his career. It would be interesting to see him with a top ten QB when he was in his prime.
Bob "The Hitman" Sanders safety from the 2000s Colts teams. Dude was 5'8 and a demon on defense 😂
Todd Gurley, Victor Cruz, Vernon Davis, Can Newton
This list is 🔥
Ezekiel elliott may be on this list in a few years
Lol, he should be on it now.
Asomugha should still be considered 4 the HOF from this list
Aaron Kampman. Early on in the beginning of the Aaron Rodgers era in GB, they ran the 4-3 defense. Kampman was a stud D end. They switched to a 3-4 and they moved him to OLB. He was not good there. I remember him going to the Jags and he basically disappeared.
Two videos I would like to see from you guys: top 10 predictions that were that came true and 10 predictions that were dead wrong
I predict that they won't make that video !!
Shaun Alexander’s injuries truly ruined his career
You know, I actually respect the discipline it must have taken to not make this entire list WRs and Running Backs. Seriously. Hell, you mention a couple in the video alone. Miles Austin, Jamal Lewis lol.
I wonder in the future will any running backs be able to make it into the hall anymore since the position is so devalued these days and teams move on from running backs so quickly these days?
Holmes will be in the HOF some day! The man broke the Rushing TD record and was a beast!!
Dez messed up by not taking that deal with the ravens! Would’ve ended up playing with Lamar!
How about a video about football spring leagues, there are some interesting ones out of the US
D'Angelo hall should be on here too
I can't believe you compared Terrell Davis in comparison to Holmes. TD was much more productive in 7 seasons compared to Holmes 11. Especially in Superbowls.
Holmes SB stats are non existent basically. He had 4 carries for 8yrds and 1 catch for 4 yrds.
Davis has 157 rushing yrds in 3 quarters. Still a record 3 rushing TDs. +3 catches for 12 yrds. In SB total 55 carries 259yrds in 2 SB. In his 8 postseason games from 1996 to 1998, his numbers were staggering: 204 carries for 1,140 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with 19 receptions for 131 yards. QHe's still only one of 8 players to rush for 2,000yrds in his career. The 4th when done. He is also a 6 time probowl, 4 x 1st team all pro, 2 x NFL offensive player of the year. NFL All Decade teamÀ for the 90's. On top of that hes help the Broncos win 2 Superbowls and was MVP in the SB win in 98 against Greenbay. And I can go on. So I would say that Terrell Davis was deserving of the HOF much more than Holms.
How can you make a comment like that first sentence then go ahead and compare one game in a SB as an example. Priest was an undrafted rookie or second year player when he went to the SB with the ravens, TD was in the prime of his career. Just a terrible example to prove your point. While I agree TD was probably better, there are a lot of comparisons to them both
chris johnson, jamaal charles, arian foster
do ranking every nfl teams special teams unit
Aldon smith should be the top, to me that dude had UNBELIEVABLE potential
Next do Top 5 NFL teams DeAndre Hopkins should go to and Top 5 he should avoid.
Top 5 He Should Go To:
Philadelphia Eagles
Kansas City Chiefs
Buffalo Bills
New York Jets
New York Giants
Honorable Mentions:
New England Patriots
Top 5 He Should Avoid:
Baltimore Ravens
Carolina Panthers
Dallas Cowboys
Los Angeles Chargers
New Orleans Saints
Dishonorable Mentions:
Cleveland Browns
@@jacksonconley5117 this is just a bad list
I'd add Odell. Had three really great years and since then just been on sideline injured or average when playing. Three great years doesnt get you into the Hall.
Welker should NOT be on this list. He’s definitely deserving of the HOF. Look at his career stats.
Video idea: Ranking worst to best Superbowl MVP'S
Great idea
Sean Taylor would of been a HOF if his life wasn’t cut short
Do a video 10 nfl players who have one last chance in 2023
What about Ocho?? 7 1,000 yard plus seasons. 5 or 6 of them were monsters
Before the video I automatically said AB, Aj Green, Julio Jones and Todd Gurley
10 Greatest NFL Players from FCS/Division 1-AA Programs
Le’Veon Bell
Had he stayed in Pittsburg and not gotten greedy he was looking like a First Ballot HOFer
Josh Gordon had the talent but couldn’t put down the Blunt.
Such a waste of talent.
10 teams that got a player that changed their franchise around
Wes Welker is a HoF lock i don't know what this video is on about. He is the one constant the two most dominant offenses in NFL history. He also single handedly changed how teams used the slot receiver for over a decade. He will be in canton with 0 doubts in my mind.
Demarco Murray wasn't in the league yet when Dallas drafted Dez
Brown and bell can make a good argument for this video too
Demarco Murray. The kid had everything even a mvp type season and he chose to take the money from Philly then was out of the league doing CFB commentary
10 stars who never scored an nfl touchdown that’s a hard one there
Justin tucker ?
Cam Newton, RG3, Kaepernick, Marcus Peters
Without a doubt, Holmes deserves a jacket. There are few NFL players you could place above him in the category of "Career ruined by injuries in their prime" in the pantheon.
Remember Miami could have had Drew Brees instead of Culpepper but thought Drew's injury might be career ending.
They chose.......................................poorly!
Roy Williams should make the list
I'd want to hear more of why Dallas from this video. Bc idk how his talent drops off so much between Romo n dak. It had to be something else
Sterling Sharpe should be in the Hall
Oh he'll get there
Welker was a WR made by his QBs.....his numbers were good because of Brady then Manning
Welker and Holmes should still make it to canton
Chad “ocho cinco” Johnson
5 straight years of 1200+ yards and atleast 7+ TDs
I would love to see the opposite of this, players who looked like they were busts, but turned their career around. First name that comes to mind for me is Alex Smith
Dez was good but i wouldnt say he was ever on his way to the Hall Of Fame!
Several still deserve to be in
All of the guys mentioned in the video are good picks! I would just add Todd Gurley and Andrew Luck to the list for different reasons!
Carson wentz looked like he was going to have a potential hall of fame career but the injury’s started to pile up and he has been on 3 teams ever since
Any time as the representative of the old people in the comment section to me the first person I thought about was John Jefferson wide receiver from the San Diego chargers in the late 70s to the early 80s. Ruined his career over a contract dispute.
Absolutely. John Jefferson was on track for a Hall of Fame career but after leaving San Diego, his career swiftly declined.
Duane Thomas could be an honorable mention. He had the potential to become an all time great and was a rising star of the early 70s Cowboys teams, contributing greatly to their SBVI victory, but couldn't keep his head straight and was out of the NFL within a few years. I remember Bob Lilly saying Duane Thomas reminded him of Jim Brown in the America's Game documentary for the 1971 Cowboys.
Stubbafield was great, but film would have shown it was Bryant Young that freed him up
Ten nfl players who never lost a step before they retired
10 late round/undrafted players that had better careers than 1st round pick players
